The Rapid Evaluation of Potential Fields in Particle Systems presents a group of algorithms for the computation of the potential and force fields in large-scale systems of particles that are likely to revolutionize a whole class of computer applications in science and engineering. In many areas of scientific computing, from studying the evolution of galaxies, to simulating the behavior of plasmas and fluids, to modelling chemical systems, a numerical scheme is used to follow the trajectories of a collection of particles moving in accordance with Newton's second law of motion in a field generated by the whole ensemble. Extending the earlier work of Rokhlin, Greengard has developed general, numerically stable methods for evaluating all pairwise interactions in linear time, a great improvement over the quadratic time required by the naive approach, and significantly better than any other proposed alternative. The Rokhlin-Greengard algorithm promises to make previously prohibitive simulations feasible, with speedups of three to four orders of magnitude in a system of a million particles. Moreover, the algorithm is well-suited for vector and parallel machines, and should make full use of their capabilities. The author presents his work with great clarity, and demonstrates the superiority of his methods both by mathematical analysis and by the results of numerical experiments.The Rapid Evaluation of Potential Fields in Particle Systems is a 1987 ACM Distinguished Dissertation.

This volume contains the editors' survey of the proceedings of a Conference on Physics in General Education held in Rio de Janeiro in July, 1963. This volume contains a readable, condensed, and interpretive account of discussions among physicists from 26 countries from the Conference on Physics in General Education held in Rio de Janeiro in July, 1963. The meeting dealt with physics as part of a liberal education. The serious practical difficulties of teaching physics in a way that is appropriate to this purpose are now widely recognized in those countries that are highly developed scientifically, and many projects have been launched to solve them. Reports on some of these projects were given at the Conference, and still others are referred to in the book. In the comparatively underdeveloped countries, on the other hand, it is still necessary to establish the importance of including physics and other sciences in the curriculum. The book will be useful to all those who are concerned with science education. It will prove particularly useful to science educators working in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.This was the second conference on education to be organized under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), in association with a number of other national and international organizations. The Conference material was reduced to about one-third of its volume, rearranged, and in instances largely rewritten, so as to present the essence of the formal addresses and discussions in as useful and readable form as possible.

When we understand that we alone can spread love, feed the homeless, and inspire positive change, and it's not up to some overarching deity, we will lie in a conscious world of caring. When there is no fictitious afterlife or latter days to make up for the experiences lost and the time wasted, we as humans are left to focus on all that is real: us and this universe, not God. Our small pale dot floating in the vastness of the cosmos; solitary with no solace besides our actions and forward-thinking for a brighter tomorrow. Let us use our better judgment and find a path toward extensive knowledge and enlightenment, not through a non-existent deity, but through each others' worldly experiences. Let us not lean on the understanding of a non-presentable invisible force, but on each other; I wish to see the betterment of the human condition through our own abilities rather waiting on a "omnipresent" God who never reveals Himself to save us. We cannot pray crime, climate change, and poverty away, but through a communal effort of concentrated policies, we can affect positive change where we are now.
Pioneer of Galactic Astronomy
This non-technical biography of Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn (1851-1922) presents to the general reader the scientific life of the astronomer who pioneered the studies of the structure of the Milky Way Galaxy. In telling Kapteyn's story the author weaves in astronomy basics and uses modern astronomical images to show the developments of astronomical research from Kapteyn's times to the present. Kapteyn took astronomy out of cataloguing stars to measuring distances and velocities in order to study their spatial distribution, systematic motions (Kapteyn's Star Streams) and the equilibrium between their gravity and motions. His legacy includes, in addition to the first application of Galactic structure and dynamics, Jan Hendrik Oort, the famous astronomer from Leiden, who as a student was so impressed by Kapteyn's lectures that he decided to become an astronomer.

Relativity Principles and Theories from Galileo to Einstein

Recent Progress on the Donaldson-Thomas Theory
This book is an exposition of recent progress on the Donaldson-Thomas (DT) theory. The DT invariant was introduced by R. Thomas in 1998 as a virtual counting of stable coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Later, it turned out that the DT invariants have many interesting properties and appear in several contexts such as the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas conjecture on curve-counting theories, wall-crossing in derived categories with respect to Bridgeland stability conditions, BPS state counting in string theory, and others. Recently, a deeper structure of the moduli spaces of coherent sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds was found through derived algebraic geometry. These moduli spaces admit shifted symplectic structures and the associated d-critical structures, which lead to refined versions of DT invariants such as cohomological DT invariants. The idea of cohomological DT invariants led to a mathematical definition of the Gopakumar-Vafa invariant, which was firstproposed by Gopakumar-Vafa in 1998, but its precise mathematical definition has not been available until recently.This book surveys the recent progress on DT invariants and related topics, with a focus on applications to curve-counting theories.

The conventional solution of the Time-Independent Schr繹dinger equation (TISE) yields the wave function as the product of a Gaussian and Hermite polynomials. It is argued that the limits set for the vanishing of the wave function in the conventional solution are inappropriate for the modelling of a diatomic molecule by such an oscillator; instead, we posit that the wave function vanishes at the limits of the excursions of the mass centres of the atoms from their equilibrium positions. It is shown that the energy eigenstates for the model developed here are given by: E = hv[ 1 ] (n pi/4)^2], where the symbols have their usual connotation.

The Shortest Path to Network Geometry
Real networks comprise from hundreds to millions of interacting elements and permeate all contexts, from technology to biology to society. All of them display non-trivial connectivity patterns, including the small-world phenomenon, making nodes to be separated by a small number of intermediate links. As a consequence, networks present an apparent lack of metric structure and are difficult to map. Yet, many networks have a hidden geometry that enables meaningful maps in the two-dimensional hyperbolic plane. The discovery of such hidden geometry and the understanding of its role have become fundamental questions in network science giving rise to the field of network geometry. This Element reviews fundamental models and methods for the geometric description of real networks with a focus on applications of real network maps, including decentralized routing protocols, geometric community detection, and the self-similar multiscale unfolding of networks by geometric renormalization.

​This book addresses the need to support decision-makers across Africa by promoting awareness of the importance of space technologies and data to African development through the presentation of existing examples where space supports education and healthcare, and by making recommendations for further roll-out of these efforts. This is necessary because of the enduring misconception that space-related research and expenditure competes with other, more pressing, needs on the continent, when in truth space can play a major role in meeting these needs.Accordingly, the book unpacks the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and the critical needs they address in the African context. Secondly, it provides an analysis of the African higher education landscape and considers the network of higher education-related SDGs, their targets, and their indicators. Africa's own development plan, Agenda 2063, is also explored. The African higher education landscape is then assessed by way of three models - the Space-Education Equation (SEE), the Benefits to Education by Space Transection (BEST), and the Enhanced Education for Sustainable Development Access and Success (EESDAS) model. The critical role of educational technologies and e-learning in bridging the educational access and success gap is appraised, as is the role of the space sector, and its technologies, applications, and data in African higher education.
