Cooling Electrons in Nanoelectronic Devices by On-Chip Demagnetisation

This thesis demonstrates that an ultralow temperature refrigeration technique called "demagnetisation refrigeration" can be miniaturised and incorporated onto millimeter-sized chips to cool nanoelectronic circuits, devices and materials. Until recently, the lowest temperature ever reached in such systems was around 4 millikelvin. Here, a temperature of 1.2mK is reported in a nanoelectronic device. The thesis introduces the idea that on-chip demagnetization refrigeration can be used to cool a wide variety of nanostructures and devices to microkelvin temperatures. This brings the exciting possibility of discovering new physics, such as exotic electronic phases, in an unexplored regime and the potential to improve the performance of existing applications, including solid-state quantum technologies. Since the first demonstration of on-chip demagnetization refrigeration, described here, the technique has been taken up by other research groups around the world. The lowest on-chip temperature is currently 0.4mK. Work is now underway to adapt the technique to cool other materials and devices, ultimately leading to a platform to study nanoscale materials, devices and circuits at microkelvin temperatures.

Two-Phase Emission Detectors

One of the rapidly developing areas of modern experimental nuclear physics is non-accelerator experiments using low-background detectors. Such experiments, as a rule, are aimed at solving problems that are of fundamental importance for understanding the structure of the Universe, checking the Standard Model of elementary particles, and looking for new physics behind the observable world. The most interesting tasks include the search for dark matter in the form of new weakly interacting particles, the search for neutrinoless double beta decay, the determination of the magnetic moment of the neutrino, the study of neutrino oscillation and new types of interaction of elementary particles, such as coherent neutrino scattering off heavy nuclei.All these processes, occurring with extremely low cross sections, require the development of efficient large-mass detectors capable of detecting small energy releases down to individual ionization electrons. An effective method to do this is the emission method of detecting ionizing particles in two-phase media, which has been proposed at Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) 50 years ago. The origin of this technique can be traced to the research headed by Prof. Boris A Dolgoshein, whose study focus on the properties of condensed noble gases as a means to develop a tracking streamer chamber with a high-density working medium.This monograph, devoted exclusively to two-phase emission detectors, considers the technology's basic features while taking into account new developments introduced into experimental practice in the last ten years since the publication of its predecessor, Emission Detectors (Bolozdynya, 2010).

Small life time, law capacity, low voltages and poor cycling stability are the drawbacks associated with the Na ion batteries.Graphene based nano-composite materials exhibit high reversible capacities, better cycle life and good cycling stability. So, graphene/TiO2 nano-composite was used as the anode material for the sodium ion rechargeable battery in this research. This book covers the synthesis of graphene/TiO2 nano-composite and its potential application as an anode in Na-ion rechargeable battery and characterization of the battery is discussed.

Nowadays, too many different research have been made on two-dimensional graphene having unique electrical and mechanical characteristics.Here, our aim is to review the properties and recent discoveries of graphene along with many produced varieties of data from many different studies.Thus, the synthesize of the graphene oxide that are made by two different methods called Hummers and Modified Hummers Methods are given and the reduction of it by the use of hydrazine and vitamin C are explained.Many previous graphene sheet data characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and elemental analysis are given.The physical properties of the products obtained by such two methods are compared and it was seen that the produced reduced graphene oxide with vitamin C (VIGO) was found to have outstanding electrical properties.The VIGO, which prevents the use of toxic agents, contributes to the production of high-quality non-toxic graphene-based materials that are environmentally friendly.The readers will find a wide range of data reflecting many new features of graphene, challenging the new candidate ideas for using them in technology, industry and medical sectors.
