Human-Like Machine Intelligence
In recent years there has been increasing excitement concerning the potential of Artificial Intelligence to transform human society. This book addresses the leading edge of research in this area. The research described aims to address present incompatibilities of Human and Machine reasoning and learning approaches. According to the influential US funding agency DARPA (originator of the Internet and Self-Driving Cars) this new area represents the Third Wave of Artificial Intelligence (3AI, 2020s-2030s), and is being actively investigated in the US, Europe and China. The chapters of this book have been authored by a mixture of UK and other international specialists. Some of the key questions addressed by the Human-Like Computing programme include how AI systems might 1) explain their decisions effectively, 2) interact with human beings in natural language, 3) learn from small numbers of examples and 4) learn with minimal supervision. Solving such fundamental problems involves new foundational research in both the Psychology of perception and interaction as well as the development of novel algorithmic approaches in Artificial Intelligence.

Low Resource Social Media Text Mining
This book focuses on methods that are unsupervised or require minimal supervision--vital in the low-resource domain. Over the past few years, rapid growth in Internet access across the globe has resulted in an explosion in user-generated text content in social media platforms. This effect is significantly pronounced in linguistically diverse areas of the world like South Asia, where over 400 million people regularly access social media platforms. YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter report a monthly active user base in excess of 200 million from this region. Natural language processing (NLP) research and publicly available resources such as models and corpora prioritize Web content authored primarily by a Western user base. Such content is authored in English by a user base fluent in the language and can be processed by a broad range of off-the-shelf NLP tools. In contrast, text from linguistically diverse regions features high levels of multilinguality, code-switching, and varied languageskill levels. Resources like corpora and models are also scarce. Due to these factors, newer methods are needed to process such text. This book is designed for NLP practitioners well versed in recent advances in the field but unfamiliar with the landscape of low-resource multilingual NLP. The contents of this book introduce the various challenges associated with social media content, quantify these issues, and provide solutions and intuition. When possible, the methods discussed are evaluated on real-world social media data sets to emphasize their robustness to the noisy nature of the social media environment. On completion of the book, the reader will be well-versed with the complexity of text-mining in multilingual, low-resource environments; will be aware of a broad set of off-the-shelf tools that can be applied to various problems; and will be able to conduct sophisticated analyses of such text.

The Handbook on Socially Interactive Agents
The Handbook on Socially Interactive Agents provides a comprehensive overview of the research fields of Embodied Conversational Agents, Intelligent Virtual Agents, and Social Robotics. Socially Interactive Agents (SIAs), whether virtually or physically embodied, are autonomous agents that are able to perceive an environment including people or other agents, reason, decide how to interact, and express attitudes such as emotions, engagement, or empathy. They are capable of interacting with people and one another in a socially intelligent manner using multimodal communicative behaviors, with the goal to support humans in various domains.Written by international experts in their respective fields, the book summarizes research in the many important research communities pertinent for SIAs, while discussing current challenges and future directions. The handbook provides easy access to modeling and studying SIAs for researchers and students, and aims at further bridging the gap between the research communities involved. In two volumes, the book clearly structures the vast body of research. The first volume starts by introducing what is involved in SIAs research, in particular research methodologies and ethical implications of developing SIAs. It further examines research on appearance and behavior, focusing on multimodality. Finally, social cognition for SIAs is investigated using different theoretical models and phenomena such as theory of mind or pro-sociality. The second volume starts with perspectives on interaction, examined from different angles such as interaction in social space, group interaction, or long-term interaction. It also includes an extensive overview summarizing research and systems of human-agent platforms and of some of the major application areas of SIAs such as education, aging support, autism, and games.

Feature management is now extending the DevOps methodology to allow applications to change on demand and run experiments to validate the success of new features. If you want to make feature management happen, LaunchDarkly is the tool for you. This book explains how feature management is key to building modern software systems. Starting with the basics of LaunchDarkly and configuring simple feature flags to turn features on and off, you'll learn how simple functionality can be applied in more powerful ways with percentage-based rollouts, experimentation, and switches. You'll see how feature management can change the way teams work and how large projects, including migrations, are planned. Finally, you'll discover various uses of every part of the tool to gain mastery of LaunchDarkly. This includes tips and tricks for experimentation, identifying groups and segments of users, and investigating and debugging issues with specific users and feature flag evaluations.By the end of the book, you'll have gained a comprehensive understanding of LaunchDarkly, along with knowledge of the adoption of trunk-based development workflows and methods, multi-variant testing, and managing infrastructure changes and migrations. What You Will Learn: Get to grips with the basics of LaunchDarkly and feature flagsRoll out a feature to a percentage or group of usersFind out how to experiment with multi-variant and A/B testingDiscover how to adopt a trunk-based development workflowExplore methods to manage infrastructure changes and migrationsGain an in-depth understanding of all aspects of the LaunchDarkly toolWho this book is for: This book is for developers, quality assurance engineers and DevOps engineers. This includes individuals who want to decouple the deployment of code from the release of a feature, run experiments in production, or understand how to change processes to build and deploy software. Software engineers will also benefit from learning how feature management can be used to improve products and processes. A basic understanding of software is all that you need to get started with this book as it covers the basics before moving on to more advanced topics.
AI for Creativity
What is computational creativity? Can AI learn to be creative? One of the human mind's most valuable features is the capacity to formulate creative thoughts, an ability that through quantum leap innovations has propelled us to the current digital age. However, creative breakthroughs are easier said than done. Appearing less frequently and more sporadically than desired, it seems that we have not yet fully cracked the creative code. But with the rapid advances in artificial intelligence which have come to provide an ever-closer proximity with the cognitive faculties of mankind, can this emerging technology improve our creative capabilities? What will that look like and will it be the missing link in the man-machine enigma? AI for Creativity provides a fascinating look at what is currently emerging in the very cutting-edge area of artificial intelligence and the tools being developed to enable computational creativity that holds the propensity to dramatically change our lives.
