Automated Car Parking Management System using LabVIEW and IR Sensors
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: A, language: English, abstract: This project, introduces an automated and efficient solution for car parking management. Utilizing LabVIEW's front panel and block diagram functionalities, the system is specifically designed to automate the entry and exit processes in a car parking facility. The incorporation of an LCD provides real-time information on the total number of parked cars and available parking spaces. The project employs a slide switch to detect vehicle entry and exit, preventing further entries when the parking area reaches full capacity. In such cases, a "NO SPACE FOR PARKING" message is displayed on the LCD in red, signaling that the parking facility is at maximum capacity. The system ensures that the entrance gate remains closed if there is no available parking space. Upon a vehicle leaving the park, the controller updates the count and allows other vehicles to enter. To address limitations of existing systems, the proposed solution integrates IR sensors. These sensors not only determine the availability of parking slots but also allocate and de-allocate them based on the presence of vehicles at entry and exit points. This innovation eliminates the time-consuming process of searching for an empty parking slot in a large area, providing a more user-friendly and efficient car parking management system. The inclusion of LED indicators further enhances user experience by signaling the availability of parking spaces in real-time, with green indicating availability and red indicating occupancy.

Corrosion Management and Control in Desalination
The world's population is steadily increasing and with it is an increasing demand for freshwater, for both drinking and irrigation. In many areas of the world, particularly in arid regions, there are limited freshwater sources such as rivers and groundwater, so desalination is being increasingly used to produce freshwater to satisfy both requirements. Although desalination is sometimes carried out on brackish waters and highly saline well waters, most desalination plants generate fresh water from seawater with a daily production that reached 95 million m3/day in 2019. Drs. Francis and Meroufel have been active in all types of desalination plants for many years, either solving corrosion problems, or, less often, preventing them from happening. There are very few publications that discuss the specific corrosion problems in desalination plants, and there are none written with the plant engineer in mind. Plant engineers often do not have an in-depth knowledge of corrosion, and because of this, they need help with day-to-day problems that may involve corrosion. Modern desalination plants are often designed with a 40-year lifespan, so it is important that plant engineers know how to tackle corrosion problems to maintain water production without shutdowns or, in extreme cases, shortening plant life. This book was conceived as being a helpful guide that can sit on an engineer's desk, and which will give advice not just on diagnosing corrosion failures, but on how to monitor the plant's resistance to corrosion by inspection and monitoring.

Recent Developments in Environmentally Sustainable and Cost-Effective Construction Materials
The effects of additives on the flow characteristics of drilling muds used in various drilling operations, including oil and gas wells, must be better quantified. In this study, acrylamide polymer was used to modify water-based bentonite mud to reduce the yield point and maximum shear stress produced by the mud during the drilling operation. The bentonite content in the drilling mud was varied up to 6% (by weight). Based on the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, the major constituents of bentonite were montmorillonite (MMT, (Na, Ca)0.33(Al, Mg)2(Si4O10)(OH)2-nH2O), feldspar (Albite, NaAlSi3O8), kaolinite (Al2Si2O5(OH4)), Beidellite ((Na, Ca0.5)0.3Al2((Si, Al)4O10)(OH)2-nH2O) and quartz (SiO2). Bentonite was modified using a water-soluble polymer solution before being used in the drilling mud. The rheological properties of bentonite were characterized from a very low strain rate to a relatively high strain rate to determine the nonlinear behavior of the shear-thinning drilling mud. The polymer modification reduced the yield point by 26-66% based on the bentonite content in the drilling mud.

For these applications, the use of low-power long-range wireless networks (LPWAN) is fundamental to facilitate all the necessary tasks in the smart grids in City 4.0 and Industry 4.0. The integration of renewable energies (photovoltaic solar, wind energy, biomass energy, hydroelectric energy, and other sources) in smart grids implies the monitoring of households, cities, industries, and electric vehicles at all times. In this sense, the development of monitoring and control applications using mobile devices is a fundamental tool in this type of system, which complements all the possibilities offered by the IoT. Smart energy meters are used to allow for communication between consumers and utility command centers to exchange messages about electrical consumption. Thus, it is essential to have access from any location and instant access to information using mobile devices or computers.

Cybersecurity Issues in Smart Grids and Future Power Systems
There has been an increased interest in renewable energy sources in the last few decades. Modern power systems rely mainly on power electronic-based generation and loads, leading to the adoption of smart grids that leverage digital communication infrastructure. Smart grids have several advantages, including the potential to provide consumers with a continuous power supply, reduced line losses, enhanced renewable output and storage, consumer participation in electricity markets, and demand-side responsiveness. Future power systems, also known as smart grids, will rely more on renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, as well as storage. Power electronic converters are used in renewable energy generation and storage. Each converter/inverter manufacturer has an algorithm for programming and optimizing hardware. Furthermore, these converters rely on communication protocols to respond to any signal from the system operator. As a result, cyber-attacks on these smart converters/inverters are a concern. Although numerous cyber-physical systems (CPS) have been presented, no universal CPS standard can be employed with various types of converters. This reprint is a collection of specialized work addressing cybersecurity challenges.
