New Trends on Nonlinear Optics in Nanostructures and Plasmonics
This Reprint presents an Editorial and ten original studies from different areas of nonlinear optics carried out in the last three years by research groups with high levels of expertise. The object of most of them is femtosecond (fs) nonlinear optical phenomena in nanostructures. In this Reprint, the results of a study on higher harmonics generation from fs and picosecond lasers in laser-induced plasma from various nanomaterials are presented; an example of the application of the generation of the second and third harmonics of fs laser radiation for the design of a unique microscope is presented; fs nonlinear-optical properties of aqueous suspensions of nanodiamonds are investigated; nonlinear up-conversion luminescence is found in aqueous suspensions of carbon dots; an example of the application of a thin-film topological insulator for the generation of THz radiation under the action of a fs laser is described; a new type of robust photonic topological insulator for laser array applications is designed; new algorithms for the theoretical study of laser pulse interactions with metals and nonlinear dielectric media interfaces are developed; the findings of a study on helicity-dependent photocurrents in thin nanostructured CuSe films due to the surface photogalvanic effect are presented; a kinetic theory of the edge photogalvanic effect for intraband electron transport in 2D materials is developed. In general, all the studies presented in this Reprint were performed at a high level and demonstrate the continuing interest of the world's scientific community in research in the field of nonlinear optics.

How technical drawings shaped early engineering practice. Technical drawings by the architects and engineers of the Renaissance made use of a range of new methods of graphic representation. These drawings--among them Leonardo da Vinci's famous drawings of mechanical devices--have long been studied for their aesthetic qualities and technological ingenuity, but their significance for the architects and engineers themselves is seldom considered. The essays in Picturing Machines 1400-1700 take this alternate perspective and look at how drawing shaped the practice of early modern engineering. They do so through detailed investigations of specific images, looking at over 100 that range from sketches to perspective views to thoroughly constructed projections. In early modern engineering practice, drawings were not merely visualizations of ideas but acted as models that shaped ideas. Picturing Machines establishes basic categories for the origins, purposes, functions, and contexts of early modern engineering illustrations, then treats a series of topics that not only focus on the way drawings became an indispensable means of engineering but also reflect the main stages in their historical development. The authors examine the social interaction conveyed by early machine images and their function as communication between practitioners; the knowledge either conveyed or presupposed by technical drawings, as seen in those of Giorgio Martini and Leonardo; drawings that required familiarity with geometry or geometric optics, including the development of architectural plans; and technical illustrations that bridged the gap between practical and theoretical mechanics.

The beginning of the 2020s finds connected multimodality at the forefront of urban mobility transformation. Cities grow larger and increasingly face problems caused by transport and traffic. It is expected that Europe's population in urban areas will increase from today's 74% to about 83.7% in 2050. Congestion costs nearly 2% of the EU's GDP annually, while 85% of the EU's urban population is exposed to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at levels deemed harmful to health. To face this challenge, cities increasingly strive to implement SUMPs (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans) to increase the quality of life in their areas and encourage economic growth. Meanwhile, Urban Air Mobility (UAM) offers a promising opportunity to mitigate road (surface) congestion by integrating an additional modality or dimension into the urban mobility landscape. Nonetheless, on the path to fully urban operations of capable automated autonomous aircraft and integrated UAM services, plenty of questions remain open.

Heat Transfer, Combustion and Flow Dynamics in Propulsion Systems
Propulsion systems based on chemical reaction principles are still the most widely used thrust devices for aircrafts, drawing a lot of research attention. Whether in traditional propulsion systems including aero-engines, rocket engines, ramjets and scramjets, or new developed combined power systems (such as TBCCs and RBCCs), thermal protection, flow dynamics and combustion instabilities in engine systems are still major concerns, especially for high-speed aircraft. Thermal protection has become the biggest issue for hypersonic aircraft experiencing extremely high external aerodynamic heating and internal combustion heat release. Another challenging issue is the risk of combustion instability inside some propulsion systems, which couples with an unsteady heat release process and leads to high thermal load. Some optimized or novel design, analysis and simulated methods have been applied to the structural design, heat transfer and flow dynamics of propulsion systems. New measurement methods have been proposed to realize clear and accurate visualizations of flow field and combustion products, such as high-resolution PIV and burst-mode high frequency LIF. In addition, new concepts have been proposed aiming at improving the efficiency of propulsion systems, such as the application of powder fuel instead of traditional fuels and the application of supercritical fluids and nanofluids in thermal management systems.
