Experimental Investigation of Spreading Factor, Payload Length and Collision Effects in LoRaWAN

The number of physical devices connected to the Internet such as vehicles, household appliances and other ""things"" has been steadily increasing in recent years, thus forming the basis for the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT ecosystem extends beyond country borders and application domains, combining thousands of versatile devices that differ in terms of their structures, capabilities, and available resources. It is therefore not surprising that the landscape of wireless communication technologies and the degree of IoT devices available today is excessively broad and diverse. Interference between networks leads to frame collisions and consequent packet loss. Frame collisions occur when two or more packets overlap in time and frequency and use the same Long Range (LoRa) parameters, i.e. the same Spreading Factor (SF), Bandwidth (BW) and Carrier Frequency (CF). When most devices use the same configuration, collision probability is higher. In this book we present a experimental work to verify the effects of collisions and interference in Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN), regarding the periodicity of transmissions and the payload sizes in a context of an inter-SF interference scenario. And to validate measuring tools like Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), ToA and Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) in the reliability of a network. We validate our conclusions by analyzing ToA according with RSSI and different data sizes, the RSSI for different SFs and different data sizes and finally the packet loss through the PDR for a better understanding of the reliability of packet transmission in our link.

Silicon 5.0 - The future of digitalization and automation for the PV Integrated Supply Chain

One of the major actual challenges of humankind is to mitigate the effects of climate change. Based on the CO2-equivalent emission, the energy transition from a fossil fuel-based to a renewable energy source is one of the key objectives. The photovoltaics silicon supply chain has reached the level of more than 1 GWp installed per day in 2023. The prospect is very positive, with the 1TWp yearly installations already being reached before all predictions in 2026 as an optimistic scenario. The production process to obtain a silicon based solar module starts from mining quartz from nature and obtaining receiving the pure silicon via several metallurgical and chemical steps, from carbothermic reduction in submerged arc furnaces down to production of ultra-pure polysilicon for photovoltaics and semiconductor grades in well-known chemical processes such as fluid bed Reactors, (CVD) Chemical Vapor Deposition SIEMENS reactors and distillation steps. The downstream production via pulling monocrystalline solar-grade silicon ingots via the Czochralski method followed by wafering steps, that are precursors of Cells and Module manufacturing, also generate by products and consumes energy which impact the final CO2 equivalent emissions to obtain the Solar Module as final product. The Silicon 5.0 (R) concept focus on reduce this CO2 footprint alongside the entire photovoltaics supply chain. The 3 pillars for the Silicon 5.0 (R) are wastes reduction via Recycling methods, Integration benefits for the whole Supply Chain and highest Automation and digitalization level for the integrated plant. The integration benefits along the supply chain could be measured within these 3 major pillars. The usage of automated steps on tapping, stocking and furnace control system for submerged arc furnaces on obtaining step of Silicon at 99% grade are part of the automation pillar. The automation charge and discharge of the Siemens reactors together with the wafering process are also contributing to leverage the Silicon 5.0 (R) concept.

The Potential of Solar Chimney Power Plants for Renewable Energy Generation

The solar chimney power plant (SCPP) is a straightforward system that converts solar energy into thermal energy within its solar collector. This thermal energy is then transformed into kinetic energy in the chimney before being converted to electricity using a wind turbine and generator setup. A numerical simulation was created based on the prototype in Manzanares, Spain. The study employed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to develop a two-dimensional axisymmetric model of an SCPP using RNG k-turbulence. A two-band discrete ordinates (DO) radiation model was utilized to solve the radiative transfer equation. The primary goal of this research was to evaluate how the inclusion of vegetation under the collector roof impacts the plant's power output. The study analyzed the performance of various SCPP designs, both with and without vegetation under the collectors. These designs included the reference plant, a secondary collector roof system, and a combined secondary and tertiary collector roof system. The findings suggest that while it may be feasible to incorporate vegetation into an SCPP, doing so would likely result in considerable reductions in the plant's power generation capacity.

IMUs are especially valuable in ecological settings, enabling applications in clinical outcome assessment (e.g., tele-rehabilitation), sports performance and injury prevention, and human-robot interaction. Recent advancements in miniaturization, performance, and integration have expanded their potential, especially when combined with artificial intelligence techniques like machine learning and deep learning. The Special Issue, titled "Recent Advances and Applications of Wearable Inertial Sensors in Motion Analysis", features 18 high-quality publications-14 original research articles, 2 systematic reviews, and 2 communications-exploring the novel uses of wearable IMUs. A strong focus is placed on gait analysis, with contributions addressing trunk acceleration patterns, gait variability, fall risk assessment, and spatio-temporal parameter estimation, even in patients using assistive devices.
