Ground Improvement Techniques

Various regions may have different soils with geotechnical problems that differ from those faced in other regions. For example, in Southeast Asia, the common geotechnical problems are those associated with construction on soft clays and organic soils, while in the arid region of the Middle East, problems are generally associated with the desert soils. In the US, the problems are associated with organic soils, expansive and collapsing soils, and shale. Laterite and lateritic soils are especially problematic in Mexico. Similarly, in Europe, for example, the geotechnical problems are associated with loess (France), and organic soil (Germany). A detailed description of various methods of ground improvement has been provided in 11 chapters. Back Analysis in Rock Engineering
This book provides practicing engineers working in the field of design, construction and monitoring of rock structures such as tunnels and slopes with technical information on how to design, how to excavate and how to monitor the structures during their construction. Based on the long-term engineering experiences of the author, field measurements together with back analyses are presented as the most powerful tools in rock engineering practice. One of the purposes of field measurements is to assess the stability of the rock structures during their construction. However, field measurement results are only numbers unless they are quantitatively interpreted, a process in which back analyses play an important role.The author has developed both the concepts of "critical strain" and of the "anisotropic parameter" of rocks, which can make it possible not only to assess the stability of the structures during their construction, but also to verify the validity of design parameters by the back analysis of field measurement results during the constructions. Based on the back analysis results, the design parameters used at a design stage could be modified if necessary. This procedure is called an "Observational method", a concept that is entirely different from that of other structures such as bridges and buildings. It is noted that in general, technical books written for practicing engineers mainly focus on empirical approaches which are based on engineers' experiences. In this book, however, no empirical approaches will be described, instead, all the approaches are based on simple rock mechanics theory. This book is the first to describe an observational method in rock engineering practice, which implies that the potential readers of this book must be practicing engineers working on rock engineering projects.

When Good Science Won (but it wasn't easy)
There ought to be a law! How many times have we said and heard this desire? From his extensive experience with crafting, advocating, and implementing many of California's earthquake safety laws, author Robert A. Olson takes the reader into the process by answering the critical question: How are earthquake safety requirements conceived and made into laws?To illustrate the process, he draws upon history to show how the policy stage was set immediately after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake when two precedent-setting measures were enacted: the "Field Act" that centralized at the state level the planning, design, and construction of public schools, and the "Riley Act" that set a minimum standard for constructing buildings in general. Brand loyalty is significant for the business growth and expansion of companies in the electronics sector. A populated country, Bangladesh has a substantial expenditure on electronic appliances, and the demand for these household items increases over the period; however, customers are not always loyal to a particular brand. Marketing literature shows that customer satisfaction and brand confidence directly affect brand loyalty, and brand trust mediates their relationship. Due to the technological advance of social media, technology has an essential role in the customer's decision to buy household appliances. The existing literature has not focused on this massive demand for electronic appliances, customer satisfaction, loyalty, trust, and social media's significant role in consumer buying behavior. The book shoed the investigation of the effect of customer satisfaction and brand trust of electronic home appliances on brand loyalty and the mediating role of brand trust in customer satisfaction and trust relationship. The study also examined the extent to which customers believe social media information influences them. The study gathered data from 523 Bangladeshi respondents from Dhaka by conducting a survey. The data were analyzed with SPSS and CB-SEM (AMOS) for the hypothesis test. The findings revealed that customer satisfaction and brand trust significantly impact brand loyalty, and social media moderates those significant relationships. The result of the study contributed to the expectancy-disconfirmation theory, trust-commitment theory, brand loyalty theory, and theory of reasoned action by presenting empirically-based insight into customer satisfaction, brand trust, and brand loyalty constructs in electronic home appliances in Bangladesh. In addition, the results provided a practical insight into marketing and brand management. They suggested the practicing managers in developing product quality with customer preference, building trust through maintaining brand image and creating awareness among the customers, and considering the significance of social media and its usage. The research used probabilistic sampling techniques, both rural and urban customers, only a single home appliance, and PLS-SEM statistical tool for analysis. Future researchers could focus and include other variables such as price or advertising; consider loyalty separately, and use both urban and rural customers to have better predictions.

Geometric objects in 3D, namely, points, planes, lines and surfaces are the subject of chapter 3; of the latter, only quadrics are studied, to keep the discussion at an elementary level, but the interested reader is guided to the literature on splines. The concept of affine transformations, at the core of CAD software, is introduced in chapter 4, which includes applications of these transformations to the synthesis of curves and surfaces that would be extremely cumbersome to produce otherwise. The book, catering to various disciplines such as engineering, graphic design, animation and architecture, is kept discipline-independent, while including examples of interest to the various disciplines. Furthermore, the book can be an invaluable complement to undergraduate lectures on CAD.
