Safety 2.1
Safety practice is undergoing a major shift in thinking but practitioners often struggle to translate its principles into tangible changes in safety practices. In Safety 2.1: The Safety Envelope, author and long-time safety practitioner Dr Paul Reyneke bridges this gap, connecting Safety II theory to the day-to-day realities of practitioners.Through the concept of the 'safety envelope', Safety 2.1 helps practitioners move from today's prescriptive solutions with their focus on individual components and linear cause and effect, to 'Safety 2-thinking' which asks us to look beyond components to their complex relationships and interactions.Operating within a complex adaptive system (CAS) - a concept thoroughly explained in the book - this approach prioritises creating the safest possible environment and conditions for work. It then empowers well-trained, experienced operators to make their own safety decisions based on what is in front of them in the 'safety envelope', a central concept woven throughout the book.In Safety 2.1: The Safety Envelope, you will find: A thorough explanation of the complex adaptive system (CAS) and how it applies to safetyPractical steps for implementing Safety II theory in your workplaceInsights into the importance of understanding the causes of success in safety managementThe language needed to effectively communicate the paradigm shift to others.Unlock the potential of Safety II and transform your safety management practices with Safety 2.1: The Safety Envelope.
Cartography and Explanatory Adequacy
This book contributes to the ongoing empirical, conceptual, and meta-theoretical debates regarding the merits and drawbacks of the cartographic program in linguistic theory. Although cartography has its roots in the study of the left periphery, its empirical scope has expanded significantly over the years and now covers a wide range of domains such as argument structure, modification, and constituent order. The chapters in this volume offer a critical examination of the cartographic assumption that there is a rich array of functional projections whose hierarchical order is fixed and determined by Universal Grammar. They discuss the nature of these cartographic hierarchies and their relation to the central theoretical goal of explanatory adequacy: are functional hierarchies an irreducible property of Universal Grammar (hence constituting part of the "residue" beyond the scope of principled explanation), or are they emergent, deriving from independent principles that do not require a further enrichment of Universal Grammar?

Our journey spans a quarter-century, tracing the evolution of Buro Happold's groundbreaking bridge designs. These are not your run-of-the-mill crossings; they are symphonies of form and function. Our team has never been your typical engineers. They are bridge artisans, measuring aspirations alongside spans. They have danced with differential equations, solved complex matrices and applied sound engineering principles, debated aesthetics with architects and occasionally pondered life over lukewarm coffee in the office.Life at Buro Happold was not all smooth arches. We weathered seismic tremors and wrestled with winds of change. But challenges hone our resolve. It taught us that equations alone cannot span chasms; it takes a dash of stubbornness and a pinch of inspiration.Within these pages, you will meet sixteen bridges. Each has a tale, saga of late-night brainstorming, coffee-stained blueprints, many were successfully constructed a few that never got built. This book is not just for engineers. It is for the child who skips across bridges, imagining tightropes. It is for the commuter who ponders existence during rush hour. And yes, it is even for the squirrel that once pirouetted atop our truss bridge. So, let us raise our metaphorical hard hats and salute these magnificent spans. Whether you are a bridge enthusiast, a casual reader, or a curious soul, welcome aboard. The symphony of bridges awaits, complete with a chorus of rivets and the occasional seagull solo.Life is short. Build bridges. And enjoy the experience.
