Sol-Gel - A Versatile and Wide Technology
The sol-gel method is a powerful and versatile wet chemical process for synthesizing advanced materials, particularly oxide-based nanostructures. Its ability to produce materials in various forms, such as powders, thin films, fibers, and aerogels, makes it a valuable tool in fields ranging from electronics and energy to medicine and environmental science. This book provides a comprehensive overview of sol-gel technology, highlighting its cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and precise control over material properties. Special attention is given to developing sustainable sol-gel processes in response to increasing environmental concerns. Emerging eco-friendly synthesis routes, including using plant extracts, biopolymers, and non-toxic solvents, are explored as natural polymerizing agents and reaction media. These green approaches offer a sustainable alternative to conventional methods, reducing the need for hazardous chemicals while maintaining high-performance material characteristics. By exploring both traditional and innovative sol-gel techniques, this volume serves as an essential resource for researchers, scientists, and industry professionals seeking to harness the full potential of sol-gel technology in modern material development.
Engineering Laboratories Design, Construction, and Renovation
Laboratory facilities are complex, technically sophisticated, and mechanically intensive structures that are expensive to build and maintain, and therefore the design, construction, and renovation of such facilities is a major challenge for all involved. Hundreds of decisions must be made before and during renovation or new construction. These decisions will determine how successfully the facility will function when completed and how successfully it can be maintained once put into service. This guide is addressed to the scientist-user and administrator, and therefore focuses on how to have a successful laboratory facility built rather than on the detailed specifications for a successfully constructed laboratory. In this context, a successful laboratory facility is defined as one that provides effective and flexible laboratories, is safe for laboratory workers, is compatible with the surrounding environment, has the support of the neighboring community and government agencies, and can be constructed in a cost-effective manner. This guide covers many basic aspects of design, renovation, and construction projects in general as well as specific laboratory-oriented issues.

Air Pollution in Urban Cities
Air pollution has emerged as a major environmental and public health crisis, severely affecting human health and quality of life. Urban air quality continues to deteriorate primarily due to vehicular emissions, industrial activities, construction dust, and biomass burning. In India, the situation is especially critical, with 39 of the world's 50 most polluted cities located in the country, and air pollution contributing to over 1.6 million premature deaths annually. Vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly face elevated health risks, including respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and strokes. It is vital to develop systems capable of identifying specific pollutants and their respective health impacts to implement more targeted and effective health interventions. The researchers dealing with air pollution, environmental sustainability, and climate change in their academic and research pursuits, socio-economists, and non-government agencies could benefit from this book.

Heavy metals concentration in sediments in the Lagaip-Strickland River
The Heavy metal contamination is an issue of global concern. It is a major environmental problem posed by the mining industry worldwide, affecting most countries. Porgera mines discharge waste (tailings and soft rocks) into the Lagaip/Strickland River system, thus rendering the river system at risk of heavy metal contamination. Sediment samples were collected along selected sites of the river systems and analyzed for specific metals i.e., Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn using ICP-MS. The contamination level of heavy metals in sediments was evaluated using pollution indices, including contamination factor, degree of contamination, modified degree of contamination, and Nemerow's pollution index. Ecological risk assessment was performed using ecological risk factors, potential ecological risk indices, and consensus-based sediment quality guidelines. The results indicate that Pb, Zn, and Cd pose long-term risks in the Lagaip Strickland reservoir, whereas the rest of the heavy metals were regarded as less hazardous based on sediment quality assessments.

High Performance Basalt Fiber
Basalt fiber possesses many superior properties, such as excellent mechanical properties, high resistance to the chemical, temperature and environmental attacks, and outstanding electrical and sound insulation. In addition, it is cost-effective and environmentally friendly because the raw materials are widely found in nature and the fiber can be discarded into the environment without any negative effect. Basalt fiber has attracted great attention as reinforcement for composites in recent years, and developed materials have been extensively used in transportation, automobile, aerospace, and civil engineering.Despite its many attractive attributes, and the contributions of basalt fiber, there are still numerous challenges to be addressed in terms of preparation, properties, and application. In addition, some of the merits of this high-performance fiber reported in the literature are usually inconsistent and incomplete, where intuition often prevails over rationality.High Performance Basalt Fiber: Fundamentals and Applications provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the latest developments in this important research field. It offers a complete and thorough analysis of the correlation between the structure and properties of basalt fiber, as well as key methods and technologies for the preparation and application of this fiber and it related composites. There is also a detailed overview of the history of basalt fiber, as well functionalization and recent state-of-art progress on basalt fiber and its corresponding composites. The book will thus fill a gap in the field, in terms of not only covering the theory but more importantly the latest technologies.
