Fixed-Film Reactors in Wastewater Treatment
Our rivers and lakes are continuously self-purifying thanks to algal and bacterial biofilms that grow over the surface of stones and other debris. This same process has been employed for over a century to treat our municipal and industrial wastewater in specially designed fixed film reactors that maximize this microbial activity by providing ideal growth conditions and unlimited food and oxygen. Software for calculating the performance of a turboprop engine
Thrusters play a crucial role in the evolution of aircraft through the different phases of flight. This has led manufacturers to improve engine power in order to bring more efficient products to market that are both quieter and less polluting.In our study, we have developed a calculation code to study the performance of a turboprop engine according to the real cycle and also in non-adaptive mode.The engine will have to operate in a wide range of conditions in terms of Mach number, altitude and rpm. The geometry will then impose, apart from adaptation, constraints which do not exist at the level of the calculation of the initial cycle.The DART 536-7R engine was used as a reference for the application of the developed code.

Optimization of Micro Processes in Fine Particle Agglomeration by Pelleting Flocculation
Efficient particle separation in order to meet stringent regulatory standards represent one of the biggest challenges facing the process industry operators today. Emerging environmental problems such as climate change, population growth and natural resource depletion make it more compelling to undertake research into alternative phase separation techniques and optimization of existing ones. Meeting this challenge requires innovative, revolutionary and integrated approach in the design and optimization of various unit processes in fine particle separation. Flocculation is widely used as an effective phase separation technique across many process industries such as water and wastewater treatment and in minerals processing. In this work, a new pre-treatment technique was developed using a patented bench scale reactor unit as a technical proof of concept. Furthermore, the book provides a valuable insight into the hydrodynamics and fluid-particle interactions within the agglomeration units.The relatively high solids content of the stable pellets (approximately 30 %) and very low residual turbidity of the post-sedimentation supernatant (7 NTU) clearly demonstrate the potential of this technique. In addition to significantly improving the subsequent solid-liquid separation efficiency, this study also showed that the effluent can be recycled back into the sewer network or utilized for non-portable reuse. The findings obtained from this research will be extremely useful in the scaling up and optimization of the reactor system.

The Chinese Space Programme in the Public Conversation about SpaceTheChinese Space Program
This study is the product of a long view of space exploration and the conversations about space in China. It locates the multiple conversations about space exploration and utilisation as they are in the Peoples' Republic of China (PRC), within other conversations about space culture in the world. China is viewed by Western researchers though many lenses which are examined here critically. In previous studies, writers explain away China's space programme with the easy answers of a "Space Race" and a "China Threat", in which the space programme is seen as merely an example of global competition, or threat, but this thesis challenges those barriers to Western understanding of the Chinese public conversation of space culture. In this study, critical theory and an underlying epistemology within a post-Enlightenment cultural frame are applied to official, archival and ephemeral texts and images. The manner of the critical application is distinguished from derivate techniques operationalised as Open Source Intelligence. The concept of Place, and within that, Foucault's linguistic concept of "Heterotopia", is significant both in understanding the Chinese overseas space bases on Earth and the temporal and spatial dislocations experienced in space missions. In acknowledging the interpretative approach, an empirical study, a "Q-sort" has been carried out, which demonstrates that the key factor in the Chinese conversation is Science, within the context of modernisation, tempered by Chinese cultural affirmation and international co-operation. The thesis concludes by providing general principles in future work for successful research into the popular culture of space exploration.

There is no more fundamental substance to life on earth than water. Three quarter of the Earth's surface is covered by either saltwater or freshwater, yet millions face a daily struggle to access enough water for survival. The effects of ongoing climate change have expanded the water crisis to areas previously considered water secure. The book features three sections.The first section presents the concepts underpinning a new approach to water infrastructure. The term "the worth of water" was developed to reflect the importance of the social life of water. Tapered driven piles have been used worldwide for over 7000 years. Despite this long, successful history, foundation designers and contractors still do not fully appreciate what is called 'taper benefit', i.e. the fact that in friction- or floating-pile applications that tapered piles are generally much more cost effective than constant-perimeter piles on a load-bearing basis. This is because the unique physical mechanism of wedging by which tapered driven piles develop resistance to both axial-compressive and uplift loads is not fully understood and appreciated. Furthermore, this wedging mechanism develops in two stages, both during initial driving and during load application, so that a tapered driven pile literally develops more soil resistance with increasing axial-compressive load.
