Recent Advances on Nitrification and Denitrification
Nitrification and denitrification are essential processes for the aquatic ecological system and vital for human health. While ammonia is applied for disinfection together with chlorine to produce chloramine, excessive ammonia may cause nitrification and bacteria growth in the water transmission pipeline. Since excessive discharge may cause eutrophication and deterioration of the aquatic system, nitrate is regulated for wastewater discharge in sensitive areas. Further, nitrate needs to be monitored and controlled in drinking water treatment to protect against methemoglobinemia in bottle-fed infants. Various conventional technologies exist, such as adsorption, ion exchange, photocatalytic oxidation, air stripping, biological nitrification and denitrification, and so on, to remove nitrogenous compounds from water. Since ammonia and nitrate are important constituents in fertilizers besides phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), nutrient recovery is drawing attention to maintaining the supply of reliable and sustainable fertilizers. This book provides a comprehensive overview of nitrification and denitrification.
Recent Scientific and Therapeutic Advances in Allograft
Allograft transplants have been done for more than 150 years. Worldwide, around 2-3 million allografts are performed each year. Although the use of allograft carries a high risk of immune rejection, the mechanisms and grades of allograft rejection are different among transplant organs and types of allograft (cell, tissue, or organ allograft). Therefore, prevention and treatment strategies against allogeneic rejection also differ. In solid organ allograft transplantation, allograft prevention strategies are quite important to prolong allograft survival. This book discusses popular rejection prevention and desensitization strategies. It also addresses tissue allograft transplantation, examining the current status and future aspects of allotransplantation of heart valves, vessels, and islets, as well as vascularized composite grafts. With regards to particulate allografts, the book discusses particulate allografts combined with platelet concentrate as an effective combination for sinus lifts and post-extraction bone grafting and in oral and maxillofacial surgery. We hope that the readers will find this volume a useful resource, as it summarizes recent relevant details and issues that will facilitate the acquisition of emerging new information in allografting.

Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Surgery - An Exploration of Current Trends, Potential Opportunities, and Evolving Threats - Volume 1
Human history is filled with inventions and other innovations that resulted in a significant and lasting change in our civilization's course of development. From gasoline-powered vehicles to transistor-based electronics or jet airplanes, things we now take for granted often appeared suddenly and unexpectedly. Yet after their introduction, our world changed forever. Over the past two decades, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been stealthily increasing their presence in our everyday lives. This 'randomly systematic" adoption process is exposing humanity to something we never previously directly faced: an intelligence that may (and likely will) exceed our own. Despite this, most people are not fully aware of current (and future) benefits, limitations, and threats related to AI/ML. Within health care, there is little awareness of what AI/ML is capable of and how these new capabilities are being implemented or utilized. It is this current state that serves as our 'starting point" in the emerging debate on AI/ML in medicine and surgery, including its integration, projected influence, and many other considerations that are not that different from other past technology adoption paradigms. This book discusses both current trends and future developments in AI and ML across health care.

The Science of Sewage
Most of us don't think about what happens when we flush - until raw sewage appears where it isn't wanted, on our beaches or pouring into rivers. Yet enormous quantities of offensive and hazardous organic waste and dirty water are flushed into the sewers every day. So how exactly is it all cleaned up?As Julian Doberski explains in this, his latest book, there's a certain biological magic in the cyclical process of turning sewage into river water, river water into drinking water and drinking water back into sewage. The Science of Sewage shines a light on this highly technical and complex operation.Beginning with a look at how societies have attempted to deal with their waste - and avoid devastating waterborne diseases - throughout history, The Science of Sewage goes on to briefly review the current structure and ownership of the UK's 'water services'. The book then considers how the biological health of our natural water bodies is assessed, and the impact of sewage pollution on the finely balanced ecosystems within our rivers, lakes and coastal waters.Julian Doberski explores the biological and technological options and challenges of turning domestic wastewater into effluent that can be safely discharged, revealing exactly what goes on in a sewage treatment works. This fascinating book then concludes by highlighting our collective responsibility - whether as citizens, public or private water service companies, or government and government regulatory bodies - for ensuring the quality of our water and the health of our environment.
Strategic Integrated Program Delivery
This book outlines a cutting-edge form of program delivery which the authors term SIP-Form or Strategic Integrated Program delivery. Using the Melbourne Level Crossing Removal Program (LXRP), consisting of the removal of 85 dangerous level crossings throughout metropolitan Melbourne, including rail station upgrades, signalling and track work, and other associated capital works, as an exemplar, the book sets out four features that the authors argue define the SIP-form concept as follows: The organisation delivers a program of projects, many using an IPD contract variant form such as a Project Alliance Agreement (PAA) in Australia and numerous other countries, or the Integrated Form of Agreement (IFoA) in North America The contract form adopted is used and has been strategically designed to accommodate the project's risk and uncertainty profile, as is the case with the LXRP Projects within the program are integrated with some being concurrently delivered with coordination across the projects in a coherent and highly purposeful manner. Projects are not included that do not strategically fit the overall program delivery strategy There is a strategy for learning and innovation diffusion across projects, concurrently and sequentially. Lessons to be learned are learned through designed-in governance mechanisms The LXRP is a potentially unique program of projects, and the book takes the reader on a journey through this complex program and after giving the background and relevant context covers topics such as strategy, governance, procurement, collaboration, program alliance, HRM, leadership, digital innovation, continuous improvement, community engagement, and performance measurement. This detailed analysis of such a complex program of projects makes this book essential reading for project managers, engineers, and advanced students of project delivery and management.
