Pollution Characterization and Quantification in the Agriculture Sectors
Typical agriculture sectors like animal production and processing, aquaculture and its processing, and fruit and vegetable processing, can be water-intensive and generate complex and sometimes severe pollution. Controlling pollution hinges on knowing its quantity (wastewater and solid waste volume) and characteristics (major pollutants and their concentration range, nature of wastes, etc.), which are mostly unavailable in commonly used guidelines. This study fills the gaps and provides unit water use, unit discharge of wastes (both liquid and solid), and their concentration range through substantial literature survey and research. Their applications are demonstrated and discussed with examples.

The Science of Sewage
Most of us don't think about what happens when we flush - until raw sewage appears where it isn't wanted, on our beaches or pouring into rivers. Yet enormous quantities of offensive and hazardous organic waste and dirty water are flushed into the sewers every day. So how exactly is it all cleaned up?As Julian Doberski explains in this, his latest book, there's a certain biological magic in the cyclical process of turning sewage into river water, river water into drinking water and drinking water back into sewage. The Science of Sewage shines a light on this highly technical and complex operation.Beginning with a look at how societies have attempted to deal with their waste - and avoid devastating waterborne diseases - throughout history, The Science of Sewage goes on to briefly review the current structure and ownership of the UK's 'water services'. The book then considers how the biological health of our natural water bodies is assessed, and the impact of sewage pollution on the finely balanced ecosystems within our rivers, lakes and coastal waters.Julian Doberski explores the biological and technological options and challenges of turning domestic wastewater into effluent that can be safely discharged, revealing exactly what goes on in a sewage treatment works. This fascinating book then concludes by highlighting our collective responsibility - whether as citizens, public or private water service companies, or government and government regulatory bodies - for ensuring the quality of our water and the health of our environment.

M7 Nuisance Organisms in Water
The drinking water community shares its water systems with a world of microscopic living creatures. Water professionals know that these organisms inhabit, grow, and potentially reproduce in source waters and throughout the treatment plant and distribution system. These creatures may contribute to numerous operational challenges, from problems in source water through finished water, including encrustation or corrosion within the water system and water quality problems at the customer's tap. This organism diversity makes it difficult for water treatment operators and water quality managers to be familiar with every organism. When problems arise, there is often no place for an operator and water quality manager to turn to for help. To address this gap, this manual provides information regarding nuisance organisms, the problems they cause, treatment options, and references to literature resources. It is intended to be a key reference for finding answers. The third edition was a complete revision of AWWA Manual M7, which stemmed from the results of the 1989 AWWA Survey of Nuisance Organisms that demonstrated a need for information to help identify and control nuisance organisms. The difficulties identified in the survey were related to microorganisms that cause problems with plant operations or for customers because of undesirable tastes, odors, and color or their mere presence in what is supposedly a clean glass of water. This fourth edition includes two new chapters, "Free-Living Protozoa" and "Invasive Aquatic Plant Species," as well as a new Taxonomy Overview. The protozoa chapter in previous editions focused on pathogenic protozoa. Because pathogenic protozoa are covered in AWWA's M48 Waterborne Pathogens manual, the chapter in Manual M7 was revised to focus on non-pathogenic or free-living protozoa. The addition of the "Invasive Aquatic Plant Species" chapter increases the Manual's applicability to source water protection and improvement. The Taxonomy Overview is designed to help operators and other water professionals recognize the relationships of organisms, which can provide a better understanding of the significance and control of the organisms in water supplies. This edition also clarifies "algae" by refocusing and expanding Chapter 10 to "Algae and Cyanobacteria." However, Chapter 10 is an introduction to the biology, ecology, and water treatment problems potentially caused by algae and cyanobacteria; readers are referred to M57 Algae: Source to Tap, which provides in-depth information and a comprehensive review of algae and cyanobacteria with respect to water treatmen

Advances in Environmental Engineering Research in Poland
A side-effect of numerous anthropogenic activities involves unfavourable changes in the natural environment. The acquisition of natural resources, especially fossil fuels, solid waste and wastewater production, as well as emission of gases and particulate matter from industrial plants and means of transport contribute to disturbances in the natural cycles of elements between different parts of the environment. Local changes lead to global effects, changing the composition of atmosphere, its capacity for absorbing the infrared radiation and temperature, which has further repercussions in the form of weather anomalies, melting glaciers, flooding, migration or extinction of species, social problems, etc. These global changes can be mitigated by local remedial actions, simultaneously taken all over the world, including Poland. Only the joint efforts of communities from different countries can be successful in preserving the world as we know it for the future generations. Realisation of this task requires the cooperation of experts across many fields of science, environmental engineering being one of most relevant. It comprises the engineering actions taken to preserve the balance of the natural environment or restore it if degradation has occurred. This monograph presents several key issues related to the actions aimed at mitigating the negative impact on the environment connected with the acquisition and transport of energy, management of municipal and industrial wastes, as well as the impact of the industry on the aquatic and soil environment. This book is dedicated to academics, engineers, and students involved in environmental engineering, who are following the advances in the research on environmental aspects of energy production and waste management.
