Modulated Elliptical Slot

2025/07/31 出版

A novel modulated slot design has been proposed and tested. The proposed slot is aimed to replace the inefficient small dipoles used in conventional MST-based imaging systems. The developed slot is very attractive as MST array element due to its small size and high efficiency/modulation depth. In fact, the developed slot has been successfully used to implement the first prototype of a microwave camera operating at 24 GHZ. It is also being used in the design of the second generation of the camera. Finally, the designed elliptical slot can be used as an electronically controlled waveguide iris for many other purposes (for instance in constructing waveguide reflective phase shifters and multiplexers/switches).This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Integral Twist Actuation of Helicopter Rotor Blades for Vibration Reduction

2025/07/31 出版

Active integral twist control for vibration reduction of helicopter rotors during forward flight is investigated. The twist deformation is obtained using embedded anisotropic piezocomposite actuators. An analytical framework is developed to examine integrally-twisted blades and their aeroelastic response during different flight conditions: frequency domain analysis for hover, and time domain analysis for forward flight. Both stem from the same three-dimensional electroelastic beam formulation with geometrical-exactness, and axe coupled with a finite-state dynamic inflow aerodynamics model. A prototype Active Twist Rotor blade was designed with this framework using Active Fiber Composites as the actuator. The ATR prototype blade was successfully tested under non-rotating conditions. Hover testing was conducted to evaluate structural integrity and dynamic response. In both conditions, a very good correlation was obtained against the analysis. Finally, a four-bladed ATR system is built and tested to demonstrate its concept in forward flight. This experiment was conducted at NASA Langley T ansonic Dynamics Tunnel and represents the first-of-a-kind Mach-scaled fully-active-twist rotor system to undergo forward flight test. In parallel, the impact upon the fixed- and rotating-system loads is estimated by the analysis. While discrepancies are found in the amplitude of the loads under actuation, the predicted trend of load variation with respect to its control phase correlates well. It was also shown, both experimentally and numerically, that the ATR blade design has the potential for hub vibratory load reduction of up to 90% using individual blade control actuation. Using the numerical framework, system identification is performed to estimate the harmonic transfer functions. The linear time-periodic system can be represented by a linear time-invariant system under the three modes of blade actuation: collective, longitudinal cyclic, and lateral cyclic. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Space Launch Vehicles

2025/07/31 出版

Launching satellites into orbit, once the exclusive domain of the U.S. and Soviet governments, today is an industry in which companies in the United States, Europe, China, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, and India compete. In the United States, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) owns and launches its space shuttle. Private sector companies provide launch services for other NASA launches and most Department of Defense (DOD) launches. Commercial customers purchase launch services from the U.S. companies or their competitors. Since the early 1980s, Congress and successive Administrations have taken actions, including passing several laws, to facilitate the U.S. commercial space launch services business. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates the industry. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Unmanned Aircraft Systems

2025/07/31 出版

Routine UAS access to the NAS poses a variety of technological, regulatory, workload, and coordination challenges. This paper will focus on the ongoing effort in the United States (U.S.) to draft and implement regulatory guidance to integrate safe, routine, and efficient UAS operations in the NAS. The current Code of Federal Regulations governing unmanned aircraft operations does not adequately address the operation of this new type of aircraft. Specifically, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not allow unrestricted UAS operations in all classifications of airspace. A lack of regulatory guidance for UASs limits their operations and leads to a lack of airspace for UAS testing and evaluation. Evolving technological advancements and increased military and civilian demand have proven the need to fully integrate and capture all the regulatory requirements for UAS's to meet their full potential. The end goal is to have UASs operating in the NAS transparently. Thus, UASs must be able to function seamlessly in the current air traffic system with other general, civilian, and military aircraft and comply with all the regulatory requirements that manned aircraft must meet. A detailed assessment of the current FAA regulatory guidance was performed with the intent to examine their applicability to UAS operations. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Techniques for Reduced Order Modeling of Aeroelastic Structures With Deforming Grids

2025/07/31 出版

Reduced order modeling (ROM) seeks to make the modeling of aeroelastic behavior practical by reducing computation time for design codes. Deforming grids are often used in aeroelastic problems to account for the deformation of the structure. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD/ROM) is a ROM technique that operates in an index-space for computations, not accounting for changes in grid dynamics, and must be modified to reflect grid deformation properly. As a POD/ROM is developed, fluid dynamics modes are created based on the index relationship between grid points. The modes are then used to recreate the full-order solution. When the relationship between the grid point locations and the index space changes, the created modes are no longer valid because the new grid dynamics are not captured accurately. To investigate and account for the effects of grid deformation on POD/ROM, a new algorithm is developed that incorporates modifications to the usual formulation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Nuclear-Powered Aircraft

2025/07/31 出版

The potential for a nuclear-powered aircraft to provide global persistence and reach, measured in months while consuming no petroleum fuel, seems alluring and worthy of pursuit. However operating requirements for such an aircraft, in addition to established political hurdles after Three-Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents, will limit the scope of a nuclear-powered aircraft program, if not eliminate the idea completely. By analyzing the potential uses of nuclear-powered aircraft against the legal requirements, the USAF can narrow its limited research and development investments in manpower and materiel to those technologies with the greatest opportunity for employment. This paper assumes a future security environment requiring attributes such as global range, persistence combined with ever rising fuel costs due to fuel scarcity. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Satellite-Based Fusion of Image/Inertial Sensors for Precise Geolocation

Neil R,Jesse  著
2025/07/31 出版

The ability to produce high-resolution images of the Earth's surface from space has flourished in recent years with the continuous development and improvement of satellite-based imaging sensors. Earth-imaging satellites often rely on complex onboard navigation systems, with dependence on Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking and/or continuous post-capture georegistration, to accurately geolocate ground targets of interest to either commercial and military customers. Consequently, these satellite systems are often massive, expensive, and susceptible to poor or unavailable target tracking capabilities in GPS-denied environments. Previous research has demonstrated that a tightlycoupled image-aided inertial navigation system (INS), using existing onboard imaging sensors, can provide significant target tracking improvement over that of conventional navigation and tracking systems. Satellite-based image-aided navigation is explored as a means of autonomously tracking stationary ground targets by implementing feature detection and recognition algorithms to accurately predict a ground target's pixel location within subsequent satellite images. The development of a robust satellite-based image-aided INS model offers a convenient, low-cost, low-weight and highly accurate solution to the geolocation precision problem, without the need of human interaction or GPS dependency, while simultaneously providing redundant and sustainable satellite navigation capabilities. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. A Technology Review of Smart Sensors With Wireless Networks for Applications in Hazardous Work Environments

2025/07/31 出版

Workers in hazardous environments such as mining are constantly exposed to the health and safety hazards of dynamic and unpredictable conditions. One approach to enable them to manage these hazards is to provide them with situational awareness: real-time data (environmental, physiological, and physical location data) obtained from wireless, wearable, smart sensor technologies deployed at the work area. The scope of this approach is limited to managing the hazards of the immediate work area for prevention purposes; it does not include technologies needed after a disaster. Three critical technologies emerge and converge to support this technical approach: smart-wearable sensors, wireless sensor networks, and low-power embedded computing. The major focus of this report is on smart sensors and wireless sensor networks. Wireless networks form the infrastructure to support the realization of situational awareness; therefore, there is a significant focus on wireless networks. Lastly, the "Future Research" section pulls together the three critical technologies by proposing applications that are relevant to mining. The applications are injured miner (person-down) detection; a wireless, wearable remote viewer; and an ultrawide band smart environment that enables localization and tracking of humans and resources. The smart environment could provide location data, physiological data, and communications (video, photos, graphical images, audio, and text messages). This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Thermal Performance of Cryogenic Multilayer Insulation at Various Layer Spacings

2025/07/31 出版

Multilayer insulation (MLI) has been shown to be the best performing cryogenic insulation system at high vacuum (less that 10 (exp 3) torr), and is widely used on spaceflight vehicles. Over the past 50 years, many investigations into MLI have yielded a general understanding of the many variables that are associated with MLI. MLI has been shown to be a function of variables such as warm boundary temperature, the number of reflector layers, and the spacer material in between reflectors, the interstitial gas pressure and the interstitial gas. Since the conduction between reflectors increases with the thickness of the spacer material, yet the radiation heat transfer is inversely proportional to the number of layers, it stands to reason that the thermal performance of MLI is a function of the number of layers per thickness, or layer density. Empirical equations that were derived based on some of the early tests showed that the conduction term was proportional to the layer density to a power. This power depended on the material combination and was determined by empirical test data. Many authors have graphically shown such optimal layer density, but none have provided any data at such low densities, or any method of determining this density. Keller, Cunnington, and Glassford showed MLI thermal performance as a function of layer density of high layer densities, but they didn't show a minimal layer density or any data below the supposed optimal layer density. However, it was recently discovered that by manipulating the derived empirical equations and taking a derivative with respect to layer density yields a solution for on optimal layer density. Various manufacturers have begun manufacturing MLI at densities below the optimal density. They began this based on the theory that increasing the distance between layers lowered the conductive heat transfer and they had no limitations on volume. By modifying the circumference of these blankets, the layer density can easily be variThis work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Development of a Simulation Capability for the Space Station Active Rack Isolation System

2025/07/31 出版

To realize quality microgravity science on the International Space Station, many microgravity facilities will utilize the Active Rack Isolation System (ARIS). Simulation capabilities for ARIS will be needed to predict the microgravity environment. This paper discusses the development of a simulation model for use in predicting the performance of the ARIS in attenuating disturbances with frequency content between 0.01 Hz and 10 Hz. The derivation of the model utilizes an energy-based approach. The complete simulation includes the dynamic model of the ISPR integrated with the model for the ARIS controller so that the entire closed-loop system is simulated. Preliminary performance predictions are made for the ARIS in attenuating both off-board disturbances as well as disturbances from hardware mounted onboard the microgravity facility. These predictions suggest that the ARIS does eliminate resonant behavior detrimental to microgravity experimentation. A limited comparison is made between the simulation predictions of ARIS attenuation of off-board disturbances and results from the ARIS flight test. These comparisons show promise, but further tuning of the simulation is needed. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Distributed Parallel Processing and Dynamic Load Balancing Techniques for Multidisciplinary High Speed Aircraft Design

2025/07/31 出版

Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) for large-scale engineering problems poses many challenges (e.g., the design of an efficient concurrent paradigm for global optimization based on disciplinary analyses, expensive computations over vast data sets, etc.) This work focuses on the application of distributed schemes for massively parallel architectures to MDO problems, as a tool for reducing computation time and solving larger problems. The specific problem considered here is configuration optimization of a high speed civil transport (HSCT), and the efficient parallelization of the embedded paradigm for reasonable design space identification. Two distributed dynamic load balancing techniques (random polling and global round robin with message combining) and two necessary termination detection schemes (global task count and token passing) were implemented and evaluated in terms of effectiveness and scalability to large problem sizes and a thousand processors. The effect of certain parameters on execution time was also inspected. Empirical results demonstrated stable performance and effectiveness for all schemes, and the parametric study showed that the selected algorithmic parameters have a negligible effect on performance. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Flight Test Analysis of the Forces and Moments Imparted on a B737-100 Airplane During Wake Vortex Encounters

2025/07/31 出版

Aircraft travel has become a major form of transportation. Several of our major airports are operating near their capacity limit, increasing congestion and delays for travelers. As a result, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been working in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), airline operators, and the airline industry to increase airport capacity without sacrificing public safety. One solution to the problem is to increase the number of airports and build new. runways; yet, this solution is becoming increasingly difficult due to limited space. A better solution is to increase the production per runway. This solution increases the possibility that one aircraft will encounter the trailing wake of another aircraft. Hazardous wake vortex encounters occur when an aircraft encounters the wake produced by a heavier aircraft. This heavy-load aircraft produces high-intensity wake turbulence that redistributes the aerodynamic loads of trailing smaller aircraft. This situation is particularly hazardous for smaller aircraft during takeoffs and landings. In order to gain a better understanding of the wake-vortex/aircraft encounter phenomena, NASA Langley Research Center conducted a series of flight tests from 1995 through 1997. These tests were designed to gather data for the development a wake encounter and wake-measurement data set with the accompanying atmospheric state information. This data set is being compiled into a database that can be used by wake vortex researchers to compare with experimental and computational results. The purpose of this research is to derive and implement a procedure for calculating the wake-vortex/aircraft interaction portion of that database by using the data recorded during those flight tests. There were three objectives to this research. Initially, the wake-induced forces and moments from each flight were analyzed based on varying flap deflection angles. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Experimental Studies of Liquefaction and Densification of Liquid Oxygen

2025/07/31 出版

The propellant combination that offers optimum performance is very reactive with a low average molecular weight of the resulting combustion products. Propellant combinations such as oxygen and hydrogen meet the above criteria, however, the propellants in gaseous form require large propellant tanks due to the low density of gas. Thus, rocketry employs cryogenic refrigeration to provide a more dense propellant stored as a liquid. In addition to propellant liquefaction, cryogenic refrigeration can also conserve propellant and provide propellant subcooling and propellant densification. Previous studies analyzed vapor conditioning of a cryogenic propellant, with the vapor conditioning by either a heat exchanger position in the vapor or by using the vapor in a refrigeration cycle as the working fluid. This study analyzes the effects of refrigeration heat exchanger located in the liquid of the common propellant oxidizer, liquid oxygen. This study predicted and determined the mass condensation rate and heat transfer coefficient for liquid oxygen. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Looking Towards the Future Air Navigation System

Joe C,Herron  著
2025/07/31 出版

Budget constraints are forcing prioritization on future spending for Air Mobility Command's weapon systems. As the airplanes age, some of the parts that are worn out become too expensive to replace. Modernization of avionics and communication packages are becoming a necessity based on the rapid implementation of the Future Air Navigation System (FANS) and Free Flight. The purpose of this study is to understand how the implementation of FANS will affect the Air Mobility Command's Global Reach Mission in the 21st Century. A background and literature review will show what elements comprise FANS and Free Flight. The strategic planning of the Air Mobility Master Plan (AMMP) and a new directive closes the review. The main issues of technology, concepts, and costs will be discussed along with the two alternatives available to AMC for future emphasis. The study concludes with the emphasis that a new planning method has to be implemented. The priority for avionics and communications upgrades is now. The operations tempo will not slow down in the near future. The policy of Global Reach will continue to be called upon. We must see that unrestricted operations in the FANS and Free Flight environment continues. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Aerodynamic Analysis of Lattice Grid Fins in Transonic Flow

2025/07/31 出版

Lattice grid fins have been studied for missile tail control for several years. A lattice grid fin can be described as an unconventional missile control surface comprised of an outer frame supported by an inner lattice grid of lifting surfaces. This unconventional fin design offers favorable lift characteristics at high angle of attack as well as almost zero hinge moments allowing the use of small and light actuators. In addition, they promise good storability for potential tube-launched and internal carriage dispenser-launched applications. The drawback for the lattice grid fins is the high drag and potentially poor radar cross section performance produced by this unconventional control surface configuration. Current research at the United State Air Force's Aeroballistic Research Facility (ARF) at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida has indicated there is a critical transonic Mach number where normal shock waves are believed to be present within some of the grid cells. At this particular Mach number, there is a dynamic instability with severe variations of the pitch moment coefficient. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to investigate these findings and elucidate the flowfield in the grid fin region. The missile model was numerically modeled in Gridgen and computational tests were run in Fluent. Finally, another fin configuration was developed that produced less drag and similar dynamic stability than the other lattice grid fin configurations tested. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Numerical Study of Rarefied Hypersonic Flow Interacting With a Continuum Jet

2025/07/31 出版

An uncoupled Computational Fluid Dynamics-Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (CFD-DSMC) technique is developed and applied to provide solutions for continuum jets interacting with rarefied external flows. The technique is based on a correlation of the appropriate Bird breakdown parameter for a transitional-rarefied condition that defines a surface within which the continuum solution is unaffected by the external flow-jet interaction. The method is applied to two problems to assess and demonstrate its validity; one of a jet interaction in the transitional-rarefied flow regime and the other in the moderately rarefied regime. Results show that the appropriate Bird breakdown surface for uncoupling the continuum and non-continuum solutions is a function of a non-dimensional parameter relating the momentum flux and collisionality between the two interacting flows. The correlation is exploited for the simulation of a jet interaction modeled for an experimental condition in the transitional-rarefied flow regime and the validity of the correlation is demonstrated. The uncoupled technique is also applied to an aerobraking flight condition for the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft with attitude control system jet interaction. Aerodynamic yawing moment coefficients for cases without and with jet interaction at various angles-of-attack were predicted, and results from the present method compare well with values published previously. The flow field and surface properties are analyzed in some detail to describe the mechanism by which the jet interaction affects the aerodynamics. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Turbulence Modeling for Shock Wave/Turbulent Boundary Layer Interactions

2025/07/31 出版

Accurate aerodynamic computational predictions are essential for the safety of space vehicles, but these computations are of limited accuracy when large pressure gradients are present in the flow. The goal of the current project is to improve the state of compressible turbulence modeling for high speed flows with shock wave / turbulent boundary layer interactions (SWTBLI). Emphasis will be placed on models that can accurately predict the separated region caused by the SWTBLI. These flows are classified as nonequilibrium boundary layers because of the very large and variable adverse pressure gradients caused by the shock waves. The lag model was designed to model these nonequilibrium flows by incorporating history effects. Standard one- and two-equation models (Spalart Allmaras and SST) and the lag model will be run and compared to a new lag model. This new model, the Reynolds stress tensor lag model (lagRST), will be assessed against multiple wind tunnel tests and correlations. The basis of the lag and lagRST models are to preserve the accuracy of the standard turbulence models in equilibrium turbulence, when the Reynolds stresses are linearly related to the mean strain rates, but create a lag between mean strain rate effects and turbulence when nonequilibrium effects become important, such as in large pressure gradients. The affect this lag has on the results for SWBLI and massively separated flows will be determined. These computations will be done with a modified version of the OVERFLOW code. This code solves the RANS equations on overset grids. It was used for this study for its ability to input very complex geometries into the flow solver, such as the Space Shuttle in the full stack configuration. The model was successfully implemented within two versions of the OVERFLOW code. Results show a substantial improvement over the baseline models for transonic separated flows. The results are mixed for the SWBLI assessed. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Effects Of Boundary Layer Flow Control Using Plasma Actuator Discharges

2025/07/31 出版

This study addresses the usage and effects of atmospheric plasma discharges on the near wall flow conditions for a Pak-B low-pressure turbine blade. A plasma actuator was built normal to the freestream flow in a low-speed wind tunnel. The test section of the wind tunnel had a contoured upper wall geometry designed to mimic the suction side of a Pak-B turbine blade. A high frequency ac voltage source supplied three voltages in the kilovolt range at four Reynolds numbers in the experiment, between 10,000 and 103,000. The effect of the plasma on the near-wall boundary layer conditions was evaluated at each of the Reynolds numbers and each of the three voltage levels. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to determine the 2D boundary layer characteristics of the flow. This research showed that the plasma discharges were able to dramatically increase the flow velocity near the wall; however, the plasma was unable to reattach an already detached boundary layer. Additionally, multiple manufacturing techniques were evaluated in an effort to make the electrodes more usable in turbine blade applications. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. 2025 Aerospace Replenishment

Yoshio,Smith  著
2025/07/31 出版

Studies examining the future of air and space power (such as New World Vistas and SPACECAST 2020) have generally not revealed much in the area of replenishment. Indeed there is a noticeable tendency to assume it away with the stated requirement or desire that aircraft should have longer range and loiter capabilities. Even if this is possible, replenishment should be better exploited to mitigate the effect of supporting all or most operations from the United States--a likely prospect in the not to distant future. In addition, some visionaries continue to insist that investment in satellite replenishment is unwise due to the constant need to modernize with new and revolutionary satellite systems. This argument fails to convince when one is open to the possibility that a replenishment platform may also modernize existing satellite systems, thus delaying obsolescence and replacement. The objective of aerospace replenishment is to provide air and space vehicles with on-demand replenishment. To accomplish this, aerospace replenishment must have the ability to project itself both globally and beyond the Earth's atmosphere. It must anticipate customer replenishment needs. Finally, it must have the innate operational responsiveness and flexibility to meet those needs. This paper identifies current vehicles, uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAV), trans-atmospheric vehicles (TAV), and satellites as potential customers in need of replenishment. Anticipated replenishment supplies will include energy, as well as numerous solids, liquids, and gases.Clearly, the replenishment needs are vast. One platform cannot do all of the tasks well. Therefore, we have has identified three types of platforms to meet the specialized needs of customers operating in different environments. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Biomimetic Micro Air Vehicle Testing Development and Small Scale Flapping-Wing Analysis

2025/07/31 出版

The purpose of this research was to develop testing methods capable of analyzing the performance of a miniature flapping-winng mechanism that can later be adapted for the development a Biomimetric flapping-wing micro vehicle (MAV). Three small scale flapping mechanisms capable of single plane flapping, flapping with active pitch control, and flapping/pitch with out-of-plane movement were designed using SolidWorks. The flapping mechanism was mounted on a supported by air bearings, and thrust was measured for a variety of conditions. The testing was conducted using wings composed of fiber and Mylar in four different size configurations, with flapping speeds ranging from 3.5 - 15Hertz. The thrust was measured using anaxially mounted 50 gram load cell which resulted in an accuracy of + 0.1 gram. The flapping mechanism was then mounted on a 6-component force balance to measure dynamic loading, which demonstrated the ability to gather time-accurate data within a single flapping stroke at speeds as high as 15Hz. High speed cameras were also used for capturing images of how the structure of the wing changed at various testing conditions. Overall this research successfully demonstrated testing procedures that can be utilized in developing scale flapping-wing micro air vehicles. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Micro-Mechanical Voltage Tunable Fabry-Perot Filters Formed in (111) Silicon

2025/07/31 出版

The MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) technology is quickly evolving as a viable means to combine micro-mechanical and micro-optical elements on the same chip. One MEMS technology that has recently gained attention by the research community is the micro-mechanical Fabry-Perot optical filter. A MEMS based Fabry-Perot consists of a vertically integrated structure composed of two mirrors separated by an air gap. Wavelength tuning is achieved by applying a bias between the two mirrors resulting in an attractive electrostatic force which pulls the mirrors closer. In this work, we present a new micro-mechanical Fabry-Perot structure which is simple to fabricate and is integratable with low cost silicon photodetectors and transistors. The structure consists of a movable gold coated oxide cantilever for the top mirror and a stationary Au/Ni plated silicon bottom mirror. The fabrication process is single mask level, self aligned, and requires only one grown or deposited layer. Undercutting of the oxide cantilever is carried out by a combination of RIE and anisotropic KOH etching of the (111) silicon substrate. Metallization of the mirrors is provided by thermal evaporation and electroplating. The optical and electrical characteristics of the fabricated devices were studied and show promissing results. A wavelength shift of 120nm with 53V applied bias was demonstrated by one device geometry using 6.27 micrometer air gap. The finesse of the structure was 2.4. Modulation bandwidths ranging from 91KHz to greater than 920KHz were also observed. Theoretical calculations show that if mirror reflectivity, smoothness, and parallelism are improved, a finesse of 30 is attainable. The predictions also suggest that a reduction of the air gap to 1 micrometer results in an increased wavelength tuning range of 175 nm with a CMOS compatible 4.75V.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Non-Destructive Evaluation of Aerospace Composites

2025/07/31 出版

Five methods of non-destructive material evaluation (NDE) were used to inspect various forms of damage commonly found in aerospace fiberglass composites: voids, edge and sub-surface delaminations, surface burning, and cracking. The images produced by X-ray, X-ray Computed Tomography, terahertz (THz) imaging, ultrasound, and flash IR thermography were analyzed for the detection of defects. Test results and analysis of each NDE method's capabilities provide a comparison study of conventional techniques versus the emerging technology of THz imaging for the non-destructive evaluation of aerospace composite materials. A comparison guide to the five methods' damage detection effectiveness for fiberglass composites is provided by defect type. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Composite Aircraft Life Cycle Cost Estimating Model

2025/07/31 出版

Composite materials are beginning to comprise a greater percentage of structural materials used throughout aircraft production. The increased usage of composites has led individuals within the Air Force community to revisit aircraft life cycle cost, LCC, models. A series of affordability initiatives has culminated in significant evidence over the last decade to better quantify the impact of primarily composite structures in aircraft. The Advanced Composite Cargo Aircraft, ACCA, a research effort sponsored by the Air Force Research Lab, attempted to determine the impact of part size and large scale composite components on LCC for cargo aircraft. This research evaluates the data provided by the ACCA program and data from aerospace industry partners to modify the existing LCC models. This research finds that a relationship exists between relative part count and touch labor hours for certain cost categories, notably, design, design support, and testing. In particular, a percentage reduction in part count drives a corresponding percentage reduction in these select cost categories. These findings suggest that reduction in part count filter through most of the major cost categories during development and production. The research findings suggest that the current LCC models require modifications in the current cost estimating relationships to capture these impacts. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Hybrid Airships

Barry,King  著
2025/07/31 出版

Airships played an important role in the US military early in the 20th century. After World War II the United States (US) military's interest in airships waned and airship operations terminated. This was due in part to advances in technology like fixed-wing aircraft. Over the next six decades, military capabilities and technologies continued to advance. These advances make the US military well suited to assist nations once disasters strike. As a result, the US receives numerous requests by foreign countries, federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for US military support during Foreign Humanitarian Assistance (FHA) operations. These operations are often complicated by limited or devastated infrastructure. Even though relief usually arrives within a day or two by air and within a week by ship, poor infrastructure can seriously delay the arrival of relief by any means, creating a gap in humanitarian assistance. Hybrid airships have the ability to surpass this limited infrastructure and deliver vital supplies directly where needed, quicker than before, and at a reduced cost. This research paper will explore the hybrid airship's suitability in support of future FHA operations.Topic: 11Air Force Fellows001 - Hybrid Airships: This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Space Launch Operations and the Lean Aerospace Initiative

2025/07/31 出版

The lean concepts of right thing, right place, and at the right time can be applied to current and future launch systems. While much has been written on the concept of lean manufacturing and production, this thesis is the first in a series of studies from the Air Force Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to investigate lean space launch operations. Nevertheless, many of the principles of lean thinking that have been applied to manufacturing and production are relevant to space operation enterprises including launch operations. The Lean Aerospace Initiative (LAI) and the concepts of lean thinking are discussed in this thesis. A review of launch system requirements and opportunities for lean practices is also presented. This is followed by an analysis of current expendable launch procedures to identify truly lean, value-added steps in launch operations. The thesis also presents a case study highlighting current Delta II expendable launch processing operations. Results of the study show how lean principles have helped the Delta launch team drastically reduce on-pad time, restructure its testing philosophy, and streamline overall operations flow. Many of these practices can be applied to other expendable launch operations and provide a strong systems baseline for the next generation of vehicles such as the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV).This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

Tools for the Conceptual Design and Engineering Analysis of Micro Air Vehicles

2025/07/31 出版

Micro Air Vehicles (MAV) are a subset of Unmanned Aircraft (UAS) that are up to two orders of magnitude smaller than manned systems. Near-Earth environments, such as forests, caves, tunnels and urban structures make reconnaissance, surveillance and search-and-rescue missions difficult and dangerous to accomplish. Therefore, MAVs are considered ideal for these types of missions. However, the data using full size aircraft is inadequate to characterize miniature aircraft parameters due to the lower Reynolds numbers and low aspect ratio (LAR) wings and impact of wing-propeller interactions. The main objectives of this research were to: collect and synthesize the available data/tools; create a statistically integrated database/tool set of MAV designs for conceptual design trades; validate the tool set using published experimental data; synthesize and model a prototype design using conceptual and empirical analysis; highlight MAV-specific design criteria and identify gaps in existing data for later research. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. An Experimental Study of the Effects of Automation on Pilot Situational Awareness in the Datalink ATC Environment

2025/07/31 出版

An experiment to study how automation, when used in conjunction with datalink for the delivery of air traffic control (ATC) clearance amendments, affects the situational awareness of aircrews was conducted. The study was focused on the relationship of situational awareness to automated Flight Management System (FMS) programming and the readback of ATC clearances. Situational awareness was tested by issuing nominally unacceptable ATC clearances and measuring whether the error was detected by the subject pilots. The experiment also varied the mode of clearance delivery: Verbal, Textual, and Graphical. The error detection performance and pilot preference results indicate that the automated programming of the FMS may be superior to manual programming. It is believed that automated FMS programming may relieve some of the cognitive load, allowing pilots to concentrate on the strategic implications of a clearance amendment. Also, readback appears to have value, but the small sample size precludes a definite conclusion. Furthermore, because textual and graphical modes of delivery offer different but complementary advantages for cognitive processing, a combination of these modes of delivery may be advantageous in a datalink presentation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Import Terminals

2025/07/31 出版

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a hazardous fuel shipped in large tankers to U.S. ports from overseas. While LNG has historically made up a small part of U.S. natural gas supplies, rising price volatility, and the possibility of domestic shortages have significantly increased LNG demand. To meet this demand, energy companies have proposed new LNG import terminals throughout the coastal United States. Many of these terminals would be built onshore near populated areas. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Capillary Flow in an Interior Corner

2025/07/31 出版

The design of fluids management processes in the low-gravity environment of space requires an accurate model and description of capillarity-controlled flow in containers of irregular geometry. Here we consider the capillary rise of a fluid along an interior corner of a container following a rapid reduction in gravity. The analytical portion of the work presents an asymptotic formulation in the limit of a slender fluid column, slight surface curvature along the corner, small inertia, and low gravity. New similarity solutions are found and a list of closed form expressions is provided for flow rate and column length. In particular, it is found that the flow is proportional to t(exp 1/2) for a constant height boundary condition, t(exp 2/5) for a spreading drop, and t(exp 3/5) for constant flow. In the experimental portion of the work, measurements from a 2.2s drop tower are reported. An extensive data set, collected over a previously unexplored range of flow parameters, includes estimates of repeatability and accuracy, the role of inertia and column slenderness, and the effects of corner angle, container geometry, and fluid properties. Comprehensive comparisons are made which illustrate the applicability of the analytic results to low-g fluid systems design. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Investigation of Navier-Stokes Code Verification and Design Optimization

2025/07/31 出版

With rapid progress made in employing computational techniques for various complex Navier-Stokes fluid flow problems, design optimization problems traditionally based on empirical formulations and experiments are now being addressed with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To be able to carry out an effective CFD-based optimization study, it is essential that the uncertainty and appropriate confidence limits of the CFD solutions be quantified over the chosen design space. The present dissertation investigates the issues related to code verification, surrogate model-based optimization and sensitivity evaluation. For Navier-Stokes (NS) CFD code verification a least square extrapolation (LSE) method is assessed. This method projects numerically computed NS solutions from multiple, coarser base grids onto a freer grid and improves solution accuracy by minimizing the residual of the discretized NS equations over the projected grid. In this dissertation, the finite volume (FV) formulation is focused on. The interplay between the xi concepts and the outcome of LSE, and the effects of solution gradients and singularities, nonlinear physics, and coupling of flow variables on the effectiveness of LSE are investigated. A CFD-based design optimization of a single element liquid rocket injector is conducted with surrogate models developed using response surface methodology (RSM) based on CFD solutions. The computational model consists of the NS equations, finite rate chemistry, and the k-6 turbulence closure. With the aid of these surrogate models, sensitivity and trade-off analyses are carried out for the injector design whose geometry (hydrogen flow angle, hydrogen and oxygen flow areas and oxygen post tip thickness) is optimized to attain desirable goals in performance (combustion length) and life/survivability (the maximum temperatures on the oxidizer post tip and injector face and a combustion chamber wall temperature). This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Formation Flight Control for Aerial Refueling

2025/07/31 出版

A controller is designed for an aircraft to autonomously fly formation during aerial refueling. Requirements for a refueling autopilot are stated. A six-degree-offreedom model is developed for an F-16 lead aircraft and a Learjet LJ-25 wing aircraft. Bare airframe stability of both aircraft is investigated, and stability augmentation is performed. A Matlab Simulink simulation is built to reproduce the sensor inputs that will be available to the wing aircraft in flight, including disturbances. Control frames are investigated to determine the optimum presentation of the error vector for control during the task of air refueling. Control laws are developed from the initial premise of proportional-plus-integral control on position error only, and made more complex until desired performance is achieved. Tanker flight profiles are designed for the lead aircraft, and simulations are accomplished to estimate controller performance. Stability and robustness are investigated through the addition of noise, turbulence, and time delays while exploring the capability limits during increasingly aggressive profiles. Modifications for flight test are described, and flight test results are reviewed from 7 formation flights of a USAF C-12 and a Learjet LJ-25 under fully autonomous control in an operationally representative refueling environment. Actual controller performance is analyzed and compared to predictions, and suggestions are made for future controllers. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Input Shaping to Reduce Solar Array Structural Vibrations

2025/07/31 出版

Structural vibrations induced by actuators can be minimized using input shaping. Input shaping is a feedforward method in which actuator commands are convolved with shaping functions to yield a shaped set of commands. These commands are designed to perform the maneuver while minimizing the residual structural vibration. In this report, input shaping is extended to stepper motor actuators. As a demonstration, an input-shaping technique based on pole-zero cancellation was used to modify the Solar Array Drive Assembly (SADA) actuator commands for the Lewis satellite. A series of impulses were calculated as the ideal SADA output for vibration control. These impulses were then discretized for use by the SADA stepper motor actuator and simulated actuator outputs were used to calculate the structural response. The effectiveness of input shaping is limited by the accuracy of the knowledge of the modal frequencies. Assuming perfect knowledge resulted in significant vibration reduction. Errors of 10% in the modal frequencies caused notably higher levels of vibration. Controller robustness was improved by incorporating additional zeros in the shaping function. The additional zeros did not require increased performance from the actuator. Despite the identification errors, the resulting feedforward controller reduced residual vibrations to the level of the exactly modeled input shaper and well below the baseline cases. These results could be easily applied to many other vibration-sensitive applications involving stepper motor actuators. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Compressive Creep Behavior of Nextel TM 720/Alumina Ceramic Matrix Composite at 1200 Degrees C in Air and in Steam Environment

2025/07/31 出版

The aerospace community continues to push the envelope in engineering aircraft that fly higher, faster, and safer while operating with a greater degree of efficiency. To meet these operational requirements innovative aerospace components must be designed to operate in aggressive environments. The effects of creep loading history on the tensile and compressive material behavior will also be examined. The primary strengths of the N720/A composite are its oxide/oxide composition which inherently resists oxidation and a porous matrix which enables crack deflection producing enhanced matrix damage tolerance. Mechanical testing showed a significant decrease in the compressive performance of N720/A when exposed to steam environment. Conversely, N720/A specimens tested in compressive creep in air experienced an increase in compressive performance. SEM analysis showed that densification of the ?簣-alumina matrix occurred in both test environments. In air densification sinters the matrix resulting in a strengthening effect. Whereas, in steam environment analysis shows the addition of hydrogen induces hydrothermal softening of the matrix resulting in a significant loss of the compressive performance of N720/A.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. System Identification of an on Orbit Spacecraft's Antenna Dynamics

2025/07/31 出版

The research presented here is a follow on to previous efforts [Pachter, Barba, 2007] in which a tight control loop was designed to meet performance specifications while minimizing the control gains of a spacecraft mounted flexible antenna. Emphasis is now shifted to system identification in order to increase nominal plant knowledge, estimate plant uncertainty bounds, as well as determine the disturbance band. Knowledge of the plant dynamics along with the corresponding uncertainty bounds will provide for the design of a control system which meets the specifications (tracking and disturbance rejection) while at the same time employing the lowest possible gain. This in turn is conducive to sensor noise disturbance rejection, avoidance of actuator saturation, and excitation of high frequency modes. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Scramjet Fuel Injection Array Optimization Utilizing Mixed Variable Pattern Search With Kriging Surrogaates

2025/07/31 出版

Fuel-air mixing analysis of scramjet aircraft is often performed through experimental research or computational -uid dynamics (cfd) algorithms. Design optimization with these approaches is often impossible under a limited budget due to their high cost per run. This investigation uses jetpen, a known inexpensive analysis tool, to build upon a previous case study of scramjet design optimization. Mixed Variable Pattern Search (mvps) is compared to evolutionary algorithms in the optimization of two scramjet designs. The rst revisits the previously studied approach and compares the quality of mvps to prior results. The second applies mvps to a new scramjet design in support of the Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation (hifire). The results demonstrate the superiority of mvps over evolutionary algorithms and paves the way for design optimization with more expensive approaches. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Investigation of Aerobraking to Return the Space Maneuver Vehicle to Low Earth Orbit From Geotransfer Orbit

2025/07/31 出版

This study investigated the use of ballistic and "Double-Dip'' aerobraking reentry to return the Space Maneuver Vehicle (SMV) from geotransfer orbit in no more than two atmosphere passes. Lift and drag accelerations were applied to the two-body problem when either of their magnitudes exceeded 1/1000 g. Lift and drag coefficients, along with the SMV model, were taken from Investigation of Atmospheric Reentry for the Space Maneuver Vehicle by Captain McNabb, AFIT/GA/ENY/04-M03. Target perigees were formulated using the two-body problem. The orbit from each target perigee was numerically integrated around a planar earth model using a fourth order Runge-Kutta method. Ballistic and "Double-Dip'' reentry schemes were attempted with 45 and 70 km altitude floors. Ballistic reentry produced a near circular, low earth orbit when the SMV's true perigee altitude resided between 66.801 and 68.449 km for a one pass reentry and between 72.226 and 73.445 km for a two pass reentry. "Double-Dip'' reentry produced a near circular, low earth orbit when the SMV's perigee altitude rested between 62.416 and 64.962 km. The resulting perigee windows, their respective heating rates, and experienced accelerations were analyzed. Effects of uncertainty in the atmosphere model on successful perigee windows for each reentry scheme were analyzed by repeating the simulation with an increased atmospheric density. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Experimental Investigation of the Flow Field in a Transonic, Axial Flow Compressor With Respect to the Development of Blockage and Loss

2025/07/31 出版

A detailed experimental investigation to understand and quantify the development of loss and blockage in the flow field of a transonic, axial flow compressor rotor has been undertaken. Detailed laser anemometer measurements were acquired upstream, within, and downstream of a transonic, axial compressor rotor operating at design and off-design conditions. The rotor was operated at 100%, 85%, 80%, and 60% of design speed which provided inlet relative Mach numbers at the blade tip of 1.48, 1.26, 1.18, and 0.89 respectively. At design speed the blockage is evaluated ahead of the rotor passage shock, downstream of the rotor passage shock, and near the trailing edge of the blade row. The blockage is evaluated in the core flow area as well as in the casing endwall region. Similarly at pm speed conditions for the cases of (1) where the rotor passage shock is much weaker than that at design speed and (2) where there is no rotor passage shock, the blockage and loss are evaluated and compared to the results at design speed. Specifically, the impact of the rotor passage shock on the blockage and loss development, pertaining to both the shock/boundary layer interactions and the shock/tip clearance flow interactions, is discussed. In addition, the blockage evaluated from the experimental data is compared to (1) an existing correlation of blockage development which was based on computational results, and (2) computational results on a limited basis. The results indicate that for this rotor the blockage in the endwall region is 2-3 times that of the core flow region and the blockage in the core flow region more than doubles when the shock strength is sufficient to separate the suction surface boundary layer. The distribution of losses in the care flow region indicate that the total loss is primarily comprised of the shock loss when the shock strength is not sufficient to separate the suction surface boundary layer. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
