Wine Growing in Great Britain 2nd Edition
Wine Growing in Great Britain is for anyone contemplating planting and establishing a vineyard, and for those already growing vines on a small scale who perhaps wish to expand their vineyards and improve their winegrowing skills, this book will be invaluable. It will also be of interest to students of viticulture. Published in 2020, the 2nd Edition has been updated and expanded to cover new developments. Wine Growing in Great Britain covers not only the viticultural tasks involved, but also, uniquely, covers the financial aspects of UK wine growing: the costs of land, vineyard establishment and management, and the income from both grape sales and wine sales. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to winegrowing in Great Britain, looking at the changes that have taken place over the last sixty years. Chapter 2 starts with the financial viability of a winegrowing enterprise, giving the likely costs of: buying suitable land, establishing a vineyard, managing that vineyard and the costs of making both still and sparkling wines. It then covers the possible income from the vineyard, covering the value of the grapes and the likely income from wine sales. Chapter 3 looks at the question of site selection, giving guidance on where the best places to plant a vineyard are and the reasons why site selection is the most important decision in the whole process. Chapter 4 covers the all-important aspect of varietal choice with full descriptions of thirty varieties - all those currently being grown in Great Britain in excess of 1.50-ha - together with a section on new vine varieties, clones of Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Meunier for sparkling wine and rootstocks suitable for Great Britain. Chapters 5-10 cover pruning and trellising systems, the planning and preparation of the site, vineyard nutrition, planting techniques, trellising systems, and the machinery and equipment required to manage a vineyard successfully. Chapters 11-16 cover the management of the vineyard from planting through to full cropping, frost protection, weed control, protected vinegrowing, and pest and disease control. Chapter 17 is devoted to the important topic of Trunk Diseases and Chapter 18 to Organic and biodynamic viticulture. Finally, Chapter 19 is on 'Getting started'. There then follow eight appendices: - Useful addresses- Vineyard pre-planting check list- Vineyard running costs- Vineyard machinery costs- The Agricultural Flat Rate Scheme- The story of Wrotham Pinot- The complete history of sparkling wine production in Great Britain - so far- Jack Ward, Horam Manor and the Merrydown Wine Company

Food for All
What kind of agriculture do we need to feed the world? World leaders have committed themselves to halving hunger by the year 2015 as a first step towards food for all. But is this an achievable target? John Madeley's new book shows we already have the experience on which to base a new approach to agricultural production and feeding the world's whole population. Millions need better access to the land from which the market forced them, and a more equitable income distribution so that the poor can afford the available food. This is part of the solution. But the other part is an innovative, multi-faceted move away from a monoculture production system dependent on ever more tractors and fossil fuels, dangerous chemicals, and hybrid seeds monopolized by a handful of giant corporations. Instead, he shows it is feasible to look to the spread of a low-external input approach, a reintegration of traditional farming techniques, new farming practices like organic agriculture and permaculture, and a range of 'green' technologies which can all play a role in bringing world agriculture back to a path which offers a viable livelihood to farmers, food for the hungry, and all without harming the environment.
Plant Disturbance Ecology
Disturbance ecology continues to be an active area of research, having undergone advances in many areas in recent years. One emerging direction is the increased coupling of physical and ecological processes, in which disturbances are increasingly traced back to mechanisms that cause the disturbances themselves, such as earth surface processes, mesoscale, and larger meteorological processes, and the ecological effects of interest are increasingly physiological. Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition encourages movement away from the informal, conceptual approach traditionally used in defining natural disturbances and clearly presents how scientists can use a multitude of approaches in plant disturbance ecology. This edition includes nine revised chapters from the first edition, as well new, more comprehensive chapters on fire disturbance and beaver disturbance. Edited by leading experts in the field, Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition is an essential resource for scientists interested in understanding plant disturbance and ecological processes.
Controlled Release Fertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture
Controlled Release Fertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture provides a comprehensive examination of precision fertilizer applications using the 4-R approach--the right amount of fertilizer at the right time to the right plant at the correct stage of plant growth. This volume consolidates detailed information on each aspect of controlled release fertilizers, including up-to-date literature citations, the current market for controlled release fertilizers and patents. Presenting the tremendous advances in experimental and theoretical studies on sustainable agriculture and related areas, this book provides in-depth insight into state-of-the-art controlled release mechanisms of fertilizers, techniques, and their use in sustainable agriculture. Conventional release mechanisms have historically meant waste of fertilizers and the adverse effects of that waste on the environment. Controlled release delivery makes significant strides in enhancing fertilizer benefit to the target plant, while protecting the surrounding environment and increasing sustainability.
Individual-Based Methods in Forest Ecology and Management
Model-driven individual-based forest ecology and individual-based methods in forest management are of increasing importance in many parts of the world. For the first time this book integrates three main fields of forest ecology and management, i.e. tree/plant interactions, biometry of plant growth and human behaviour in forests. Individual-based forest ecology and management is an interdisciplinary research field with a focus on how the individual behaviour of plants contributes to the formation of spatial patterns that evolve through time. Key to this research is a strict bottom-up approach where the shaping and characteristics of plant communities are mostly the result of interactions between plants and between plants and humans. This book unites important methods of individual-based forest ecology and management from point process statistics, individual-based modelling, plant growth science and behavioural statistics. For ease of access, better understanding and transparency the methods are accompanied by R code and worked examples.
Georgia Pest Management Handbook
The Georgia Pest Management Handbook provides current information on selection, application, and safe use of pest control chemicals. This handbook has recommendations for pest control around homes and on pets; for pests of home garden vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals; and for pests of public health interest associated with our homes. Cultural, biological, physical, and other types of control are recommended where appropriate. Pesticide recommendations are based on information on the manufacturer labels and on performance data from research and extension trials at the University of Georgia and its sister institutions. Because environmental conditions, the severity of pest pressure, and methods of application vary widely, recommendations do not imply that performance of pesticides will always be acceptable. This publication is intended to be used only as a guide. Trade and brand names are used only for information. The University of Georgia does not guarantee nor warrant published standards on any product mentioned; nor does the use of a trade or brand name imply approval of any product to the exclusion of others that may also be suitable. Always follow the use instructions and precautions on the pesticide label. For questions, concerns, or improvement suggestions regarding the Georgia Pest Management Handbook, please contact your county agent.
In Fire’s Way
The fires that have made national news every summer of the twenty-first century have been a wakeup call to citizens of the West. We are all potential victims of fire unless we establish a new way of living with its threat. This timely new book by an environmental journalist with advanced degrees in forestry offers readers a partnership role not just with firefighters but with fire itself. Designed to help westerners understand the Wildfire Danger Zone in the Rocky Mountain states, it focuses closely on New Mexico and Colorado, going beyond technical questions to larger life-style issues.Beginning with discussions of the general properties of wildfire, the ways residents can minimize property damage, and lessons for how to avoid conflagrations such as those that have devastated the mountain communities of Los Alamos and Durango, In Fire's Way proposes the formation of partnerships at the local, state, and federal levels to manage fire for the health of local ecosystems. Fire management is inevitably controversial. Proposals for reducing combustibility by increasing logging are as offensive to some citizens as increased government regulations are to others. Prescribed and controlled burns are essential but frightening, especially since the Cerro Grande fire of 2000, a prescribed burn that got away from its crew.As the rural West attracts more suburbanites who expect government agencies to keep them safe, ranchers and farmers are increasingly vocal in their opposition to federal regulations. This book offers the first review of proven methods to create cooperation among these diverse westerners to reduce the dangers of wildfire.
The Social Metabolism of Spanish Agriculture, 1900-2008
This open access book provides a panoramic view of the evolution of Spanish agriculture from 1900 to the present, offering a more diverse picture to the complex and multidimensional reality of agrarian production. With a clear transdisciplinary ambition, the book applies an original and innovative theoretical and methodological tool, termed Agrarian Social Metabolism, combining Social Metabolism with an agroecological perspective. This integrative analysis is especially interesting for environmental scientists and policy makers being the best way to design sustainable agroecosystems and public policies capable of moving us towards a more sustainable food system.Spanish agricultural production has experienced impressive growth during the 20th century which has allowed it to ensure the supply of food to the population and even to transform some crops into important chapters in foreign trade. However, this growth has had its negative side since it was based on the injection of large amounts of external energy, on the destruction of employment and the loss of profitability of agricultural activity. But perhaps the most serious part is the strong impact of the current industrialised agriculture model on Spanish agroecosystems, exposed to the overexploitation of hydric resources, pollution of the water by nitrates and pesticides, high erosion rates and an alarming loss of biodiversity; damage which in the immediate future will end up reducing production capacity.

A Year’s Work in an Out-Apiary
This illustrated account of beekeeping is rooted in the practical experience of G. M. Doolittle, whose techniques resulted in good yields of honey.Writing in the early 20th century, several of Doolittle's practical ideas hold some interest for the modern apiarist, in spite of how modern equipment has improved and evolved. Although the book is primarily aimed at the specialist who maintains many bee colonies as a line of work, the author explains that his observations can also serve as useful for the home-based hobbyist who aspires to raise only a single colony.Detailed drawings of the containers used and their handling are included, as are diagrams indicating how to manage the grasses and grounds around hives. We are shown how the bees are cared for, and several of Doolittle's methods for increasing the activity and yield. The techniques explained include supplying a colony with a queen through the use of a tubal cage, and protecting the valuable queens from harm during transport with carefully-built housing. We are also given advice on dealing with pests such as mice, and keeping bees happy and productive through changes in weather.Overall, Doolittle's experiences as a beekeeper are plainly written and brimming with wisdom.

The Ecology of Agroecosystems
The study of ecological processes that are important to agricultural production systems is called agroecology. The basic unit of study in agroecology is called an agroecosystem. It can be viewed as a subset of a conventional ecosystem and may be defined as a unit of agricultural activity that includes the living and abiotic components as well as their interactions. It embraces not only the immediate site of agricultural activity but also the region that is impacted by agriculture. Current farming practices have led to over-exploitation of water resources, reduced soil fertility and high levels of erosion. Therefore there has been a burgeoning interest in farming with agroecosystems. A major initiative in agroecology is to promote practices that decrease the distinction between natural ecosystems and agroecosystems by reducing the impact of agriculture. The book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of agroecosystems and the recent researches in agroecology. A number of latest researches have been included to keep the readers up-to-date with the global concepts in these areas of study. The extensive content of this book provides the readers with a thorough understanding of the subject.
