The Works of Lin Yutang
The Works of Lin Yutang is the first book to provide a comprehensive study of Lin Yutang's translation theory and translated (and written) works in English as a whole, examined from the perspective of his pursuit of recognition of cultural equity between China and the English-speaking world. The arc of the book is Lin's new method of translating China to the Anglophone world, which is crucial to rendering Chinese culture as an equal member of the modern world. This book identifies Lin's legacy of translation and recognition as his acknowledgement of source and target cultural territories in translation, and at the same time, his questioning of perspectives that privilege the authority of either. This book will appeal to scholars and students in Translation Studies, World and Comparative Literature, Literary and Cultural Studies, and Chinese Studies. It can also be used as a reference work for practitioners in translation and creative writing.

Fundamental Spoken Chinese
Like its predecessor, the second edition of Fundamental Spoken Chinese places primary importance on providing a clear, systematic, and graduated introduction to the basic grammar and vocabulary of spoken Mandarin Chinese through chapters that center on identified sentence patterns and vocabulary items rather than particular social functions or daily activities. The authors continue the tradition of separating the teaching of oral and written skills, leaving the instruction of reading and writing in Chinese characters exclusively to the accompanying Fundamental Written Chinese, also in its second edition. The lessons in the two textbooks, however, are keyed to each other in terms of vocabulary and grammar, so they may be used simultaneously, or the parallel written skills may be introduced at a later time. Both textbooks were developed for learning in the classroom and for independent study. The exercise book contains a wide variety of exercises and activities specifically designed to reinforce a systematic progression of spoken Chinese that focuses on developing accuracy then fluency in conversations. Audio, exercise model answers, and other resources for Fundamental Spoken Chinese may be accessed at www.fundamentalchinese.com.
The Mesopotamian Riddle
An "adventure tale for puzzle lovers and Indiana Jones fans alike" (The Washington Post) following three free-spirited Victorians on their twenty-year quest to decipher cuneiform, the oldest writing in the world--from the New York Times bestselling author of The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu. It was one of history's great vanishing acts. Around 3,400 BCE, a scribe in the mud-walled city-state of Uruk picked up a reed stylus to press tiny symbols into clay. For the next three thousand years, wedge-shape cuneiform script would record the military conquests, scientific discoveries, and epic literature of the great kingdoms of Mesopotamia. And then...the meaning of the characters was lost. London, 1857. In an era obsessed with human progress, mysterious palaces emerging from the desert sands have captured the Victorian public's imagination. Assyria, Babylon, the mighty Persian Empire... these civilizations had gone down in the annals as the great antagonists to ancient Greece and ancient Israel. What did these "bad guys" of Western history have to say for themselves? What were their values, their rituals, their understandings of their place in the universe? What was it like simply to be human at the dawn of recorded history? Enter a swashbuckling archaeologist, a suave military officer turned diplomat, and a cloistered Irish rector, all vying for glory in a race to decipher the script that would enable humans to peer farther back into our history than ever before. From the ruins of Persepolis to lawless outposts of the crumbling Ottoman Empire, let The Mesopotamian Riddle whisk you off on "an epic intellectual adventure" (The Wall Street Journal) through the golden age of archaeology in an epic quest to understand where we came from--and where we perhaps might go.
Motion Verbs in Modern Standard Arabic
Languages vary in their linguistic expression of motion, leading to a typology based on different mappings of motion event elements onto linguistic elements: satellite-framed languages vs. verb-framed languages. This book addresses the linguistic expression and lexicalization patterns of motion in Modern Standard Arabic, incorporating Arabic into the typology of motion. The first two chapters provide an introduction and a detailed theoretical background on the conceptualization of motion and universally acknowledged patterns of lexicalization. Chapters three, four, and five offer a thorough analysis of Arabic according to the typology of motion elements: Motion, Figure, Ground, Path, and Manner. Chapter six concludes the analysis with valuable insights into motion expression in Arabic and the semantic features of Arabic motion verbs.
The Journey to the West
Sun Wukong is one of the most famous characters in Chinese literature and culture. His legendary bravery, his foolish mistakes, his sharp-tongued commentary and his yearning for immortality and spiritual knowledge have inspired hundreds of books, television shows, graphic novels, video games and films. The full story of Sun Wukong's adventures is told in Journey to the West, an epic 2,000-page novel written in the 16th century by Wu Cheng'en. Journey to the West is probably the most famous and best-loved novel in China and is considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. Its place in Chinese literature is roughly comparable to Homer's epic poem The Odyssey in Western literature. Wikipedia sums up the book's role perfectly, saying, "Enduringly popular, the tale is at once a comic adventure story, a humorous satire of Chinese bureaucracy, a spring of spiritual insight, and an extended allegory in which the group of pilgrims journeys towards enlightenment by the power and virtue of cooperation."Journey to the West is the ultimate tale of adventure, magic, and myth. It is probably the most famous and best-loved novel in China and is considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. The original Chinese novel written by Wu Chen'en in the 16th century is over a half million Chinese characters long, and a direct English translation runs over 2,000 pages and has a very large vocabulary. This book is not a literal translation of the original novel. Rather, it's a retelling of the story in easy-to-read Simplified Chinese. Unlike other full-text translations, this is written using a restricted vocabulary, simpler sentence structure, and fewer proper nouns. The chapters start off quite easy and gradually increase in complexity. The authors have made every effort to remain faithful to the original while retelling it in simple language. The book also contains full Pinyin (phonetic spelling) and English versions, and a complete glossary of all Chinese words used. A high quality audiobook version is available on Audible, and standard-quality versions are available on YouTube and the Imagin8 Press website. This edition is a beautiful "coffee table" style hardback book. It's 8.5" x 11", 7 and weighs well over 5 pounds. You can see some pictures of the book's interior here: tinyurl.com/JTWpic1tinyurl.com/JTWpic2tinyurl.com/JTWpic4tinyurl.com/JTWpic6
Diversity across the Arabian Peninsula
This edited volume brings together a diverse and rich set of contributions on the Arabian Peninsula. Ranging from history, field linguistics, and cultural studies, these essays address the diversity of languages, ways of life, and natural environments that have marked the region throughout its history. The book stems from the intellectual exchange and collaboration fostered by a virtual workshop that met regularly in 2020-21 and which drew participants from within and beyond the academy. The contributions gathered in this volume highlight the need for a better understanding of a region that hosts a vast amount of culturally and linguistically diverse material, often in a precarious state of conservation. Diversity Across the Arabian Peninsula argues for the importance of holistic, community-based, and interdisciplinary approaches to linguistic endangerment and deep social and cultural changes: there is no documentation of language without attention to language use, the material lifeworld and its ecology, and social and cultural setting. Such research is enriched and made more impactful through collaboration with communities and scholars from the Global South. The essays in this volume thus spearhead a contextualized study of South Arabian linguistic varieties and their connection with the natural and cultural world they inhabit.

A Grammar of Dolakha Newar
A Grammar of Dolakha Newar is the first fully comprehensive reference grammar of a Newar variety. Dolakha Newar is of particular interest as it is member of the mutually unintelligible eastern branch of the family, so allows for an important comparative perspective on this significant Tibeto-Burman language. In addition to a chapter on phonetics and phonology, the book contains a separate chapter on prosody. There are also distinct chapters on each word class, with full discussion of the morphological and syntactic properties of each class. The book provides an extensive study of syntax, including complete chapters on constructions, clause structure, constituent order, grammatical relations, nominalization, complementation, the participial construction, and the complex sentence, as well as a detailed chapter on tense and aspect. Brimming with examples from natural discourse, the book couples rigorous description of the language's structures with full discussion of how the structures are used in connected speech. Each analysis is presented with full argumentation and competing analyses are contrasted and discussed. The result is a rich, readable, and beautifully argued portrait of a language and how it works.

Kanji Alchemy I
Rather than studying Japanese characters one by one, it is more efficient to focus on multiple Japanese characters from the start. So instead of covering 2136 singular Kanji, learning clusters of Japanese characters that share similar aspects would greatly facilitate the learning process and make memorization less burdensome. This textbook has been designed to reduce the number of forms needed to learn around 2136 Jouyou Kanji to approximately 500 characters, that is about 25% of the total.Characters that are graphically similar have been selected to make distinct groups or clusters that form the basis of the system. Through careful selection 490 characters and their clusters represent close to 2000 Jouyou Kanji. Each of these characters represents on average three to four other characters that share the same features; that means that over 90% of General Use Kanji are related in a meaningful, learner-friendly way.The same approach has been used to allocate Japanese characters for Jinmei Kanji (862 Kanji that are used for names) and Hyougai Kanji (more that 3460 Kanji that are not part of the first two categories), see Kanji Alchemy II and Kanji Alchemy III.

诗之光
Poems are among the most brilliant innovations of us as humans, a gift inexorably rooted in every bit of our life experiences since we were born. We write poems, we read poems, we spread poems, and we derive great varieties of feelings and thoughts from connecting ourselves to poems. Poems are never the privilege of the few; instead, they are the crystallization of the wisdom of all. This collection of poems, with the title of Muse of Light(诗之光), is a typical example of how the significance and value of poems can be seen in the sheer and incessant endeavor of some promising poets who, for the time being, may not be remarkably influential. Such poems, either showing pioneering styles of language use, characterized by experimental probes into mental states, or featuring in-depth reflections on the meaning of life, are manifestations of how the poets have been constructing and reconstructing their own identities as the ones to depict, demonstrate, and decipher what poems mean to who they are.The poems selected in this book were all posted on the Wechat platform of Muse of Light and listed in the same order as they were released online. During the translating process, Professor Wu Yongqiang, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures of SMU, has provided indispensable support both intellectually and psychologically. The phrase "thank you" is indeed insufficient to express the translators' gratitude for what Ms. Leng Tong and Professor Wu Yongqiang have done for the translation of such beautiful poems.
Twelve Essential Upanishads Volume I
The Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad focuses on the fire sacrifice (agni-hotra), which shapes the worldview of ancient Vedic culture. The fire sacrifice becomes a metaphor for the universe. The heavens, sky, earth, man and woman are seen as altars of burning fire. All life is a sacrificial fire. Feed that fire! Cover photo: A Hindu priest in Kerala, India performs a fire sacrifice (agni-hotra) and throws offerings into the consecrated fire. The Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad, also known as the "Great Forest Upanishad," holds a prominent place among the principal Upanishads, which form the foundation of Hindu spiritual thought. Though part of the oldest Hindu traditions, the concepts are not bound by geography and historical time, or even Hinduism itself. They are human and universal teachings which offer valuable insights and serve as a comprehensive source of knowledge for seekers of truth. One of the great accomplishments of modern comparative religion is the distinction that can be made between belief and faith. This was first brought to our attention by the theologian Wilford Cantwell Smith, who made this distinction back in the 1960s, in his book The Meaning and End of Religion. There he drew the distinction that within what we call religion are actually two components, an accumulated religious tradition and religious faith itself. The architecture, music, scriptures, doctrines, forms of dress, prayers, and even foods, etc., all form what he called the accumulated religious tradition. And then lying at the foundation of this accumulated tradition is the actual religious faith itself. The two interact: Faith produces the religious tradition in the first place and then in turn is nurtured and supported by that accumulated tradition. If we accept this distinction, that belief and faith are not the same, then we realize that what one believes, the doctrines, the creeds, the theology, etc., are part of an accumulated tradition and therefore subject to change. "This translation has been made by a Westerner who is also a practitioner. Given my Western perspective and knowing the distinction between faith and belief, I have tried to work with these sacred texts to find relevant meaning for who I am as a Westerner schooled in the West, but who is deeply involved in India and Hindu traditions. Being freed from the constraints of needing a vedānta, whether in the tradition of Shankara, Ramanuja or Madhva, allows me to look at these Upanishads in a new way."The text of an ancient document is a snapshot of how things were at the time the particular document was composed. These Upanishads were first composed thousands of years ago, and therefore, we are looking back in time, seeing the state of religious thinking and practice in India at that time. Yet the Upanishads are valuable and sacred works that also speak to our time and beyond India. They are human yearnings for ultimate meaning and therefore a part of human religious thinking. The Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad explores the metaphysical concepts and philosophical inquiries regarding the nature of the ultimate reality. It delves into profound contemplations on the origin and nature of the universe, the Supreme Force (brahma), and the relationship between the individual self (ātmā) and the cosmic consciousness. Through intricate and poetic dialogues, it explores the nature of existence, creation, and the interconnectedness of all things.
Life on the Yangtze River
This is a unique collection of works. It is "unique" because it vividly captures the journey of a boat, a family, and a region over nearly a century. Most Chinese people are familiar with the Tang-dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu's poem, "Spring River in the Flower Moon Night." The setting of this work is the very region where Zhang Ruoxu once found inspiration by the waterside - the intricate waterways of Yangzhou, where the Grand Canal meets the Yangtze River. These essays not only paint a picture of the picturesque scenes we associate with the famous line from Zhang Ruoxu's poem, "In spring the river rises to meet the sea, the bright moon rises with the tide," but also delve into a life of daring on the water, battling fierce winds and waves, and the heart-pounding adventures of those living on the edge, as the saying goes: "Those who live on boats or ride horses are always tempting fate." Likewise, many are familiar with the Beijing opera A Fisherman Kills a Family, and the line, "Early in the morning, crows call as the firewood door is opened." These words call to mind the plight of boatmen from a millennium ago, of their chivalrous deeds, of Xiao En and his daughter Xiao Guiying. Ms. Jiang Xiaping's book Life on the Yangtze River can be characterized as a contemporary Xiao Guiying's symphony of praise for today's Xiao En. She paints a vivid portrait of her father, Jiang Wenlong, known as "the River-Crossing Dragon," a man of honor and bravery, revolutionary in spirit, possessing strict family values - a reincarnation of Xiao En, a hero of the Yangzhou's waterways.
