A Place for Everything
From a New York Times bestselling historian, the "truly revelatory" (Wall Street Journal) story of how the alphabet ordered our worldA Place for Everything is the first-ever history of alphabetization, from the Library of Alexandria to Wikipedia. Once we've learned our ABCs as children, few of us ever think of them again, but alphabetical order plays a material role in our adult lives. From school registers to electoral rolls, from dictionaries and encyclopedias to library shelves, the alphabet has ordered our lives, often invisibly. Yet the birth of alphabetization was a constant struggle: Medieval clergy felt that its use would upend the divine order of creation; elite institutions like Harvard and Yale long ranked students by the social status of their parents, rather than ordering them from A to Z. But eventually alphabetical order triumphed. With wry humor, historian Judith Flanders offers a fascinating history of how the alphabet ordered our world.
The Nerdy OWL Science Text
The text includes 25 articles associated with the common topics taught in a fifth grade grade science classroom. The goal of this text is to bridge the void between scientific literacy and general literacy. With an eye always on inquiry science, we firmly believe inclusion of text is critical. First, text helps students make connections that would otherwise be impossible with conventional inquiry. Second, we want students to learn to become great readers. Great readers have the keys to unlock any type of text, not just science. Third, we want to integrate science and reading in a way that helps both disciplines. Most students love science, so why not offer interesting science topics to students who might otherwise find reading to be boring. Everything included in this book is checked using multiple metrics to assure what we write to the newest demands for grade level complex text. During this process we are always mindful to focus on known misconceptions that are commonly associated with these topics. A third requirement is text length. There has been emphasis about reading stamina for many years. We make sure our text length accommodates this goal by using a common metric. Each article includes reading comprehension questions. Answers to these questions as well as many other associated resources can be found at our website: https: //www.candlelightscience.com/

The Greatest Invention
In this exhilarating celebration of human ingenuity and perseverance--published all around the world--a trailblazing Italian scholar sifts through our cultural and social behavior in search of the origins of our greatest invention: writing. The L where a tabletop meets the legs, the T between double doors, the D of an armchair's oval backrest--all around us is an alphabet in things. But how did these shapes make it onto the page, never mind form complex structures such as this sentence? In The Greatest Invention, Silvia Ferrara takes a profound look at how--and how many times--human beings have managed to produce the miracle of written language, traveling back and forth in time and all across the globe to Mesopotamia, Crete, China, Egypt, Central America, Easter Island, and beyond. With Ferrara as our guide, we examine the enigmas of undeciphered scripts, including famous cases like the Phaistos Disk and the Voynich Manuscript; we touch the knotted, colored strings of the Inca quipu; we study the turtle shells and ox scapulae that bear the earliest Chinese inscriptions; we watch in awe as Sequoyah single-handedly invents a script for the Cherokee language; and we venture to the cutting edge of decipherment, in which high-powered laser scanners bring tears to an engineer's eye. A code-cracking tour around the globe, The Greatest Invention chronicles a previously uncharted journey, one filled with past flashes of brilliance, present-day scientific research, and a faint, fleeting glimpse of writing's future.
The Derivational Timing of Ellipsis
This volume explores the nature of ellipsis, the core phenomenon that results in various types of omission in sentences. The chapters adopt the popular 'silent structure' accounts of ellipsis, and investigate the question of when linguistic material becomes silenced during the derivation and realization of syntactic structure. The book begins with a detailed introduction from the editors that outlines the current generative syntactic approaches to the derivational timing of ellipsis. In the chapters that follow, internationally-recognized experts in the field address key topics including structure building, the architecture of grammar, the interaction of distinct modules with syntax, the order of operations in the post-syntactic component, and constraints on binding relations. The authors also present novel arguments for and against the derivational approaches to ellipsis, the licensing of ellipsis, and phonological constraints on elliptical sentences. The findings, based on data from English and other languages such as Armenian, Italo-Romance, Ossetic, Spanish, Taiwanese, and Turkish, facilitate a deeper understanding of the interaction between syntax and the neighbouring modules in the formation of elliptical utterances.

Practical Grammar of Modern Chinese IV
Chinese grammar is characterized by its simple structure, lack of inflections, and wide use of monosyllabic morphemes. With the increased popularity of learning Chinese as a second language, there is a demand for a guide to Chinese grammar that's targeted at second language learners. This four-volume set is one of the earliest and most influential works of Chinese grammar, with a special focus on teaching and learning Chinese as a second language. Drawing on rich teaching experience, the authors analyze a myriad of real-world examples to describe Chinese grammatical phenomena and rules while introducing the general grammar system of Chinese. This volume introduces several simple sentence and compound sentence structures of modern Chinese grammar. In addition, the authors examine discourse and other larger units of sentences in use.Since the first edition came out in 1983, this set has been revised twice and remained one of the best sellers in the field. Practitioners and scholars of teaching Chinese as a second language, as well as students with a basic knowledge of Chinese, will find it to be a handy reference.
English Without Tears
English Without Tears: Mind Your P's and Q's is a practical textbook that delves into the nitty gritty of the English language spoken in this contemporaneous global village. Jettisoned by its biological mother, the English Language has been adopted, appropriated, nurtured and made to bear the hallmarks of global Englishes. It is still the English language in full communion with its ancestral roots, but it is English that been panel beaten almost out of shape and endowed with the speech mannerisms, elocutionary patterns and phonetic peculiarities of the non-native. The goal of this book has been to shed ample light on some grammatical and lexical incongruities that often disfigure the speech of Anglophones whose mother tongue is not English. We are hopeful that this work would meet the dire needs of students and instructors of the English language all over the world. The substance in this book is easily digestible; our lexical choices are devoid of convolution and our illustrations are down-to-earth. Ultimately, this book is our unapologetic contribution to the ongoing global Englishes revolution.

A Guide for Volunteers Teaching English as a Second Language
Algonquin College and ESL experts, with funding from The Canadian Red Cross, have created a new language-learning delivery model called the Community Language Support Program. The program is a decentralized, place-based approach to language learning where community members teach English in ways that directly support the individual learner. It is done in the places and spaces they choose to live in and according to their schedule and preference for learning. The program is a response to traditional challenges inherent in offering English-as-a-Second-Language training to adult newcomers, especially in rural areas. Roadblocks along their language learning journey include transportation, childcare, hours of service, eligibility requirements, funding requirements such as minimum numbers of regularly attending registrants, and so on. These challenges cannot be alleviated by a centralized or singular nature of service delivery-one place, one way and at one time. Instead, the program effectively and efficiently leaps over these common barriers. No new infrastructure is required and the work is delivered by community allies. These volunteers are supported by a qualified Language Coach who provides access to key supports, resources, suggested tactics and materials to build their capacity to teach. By combining the good nature of volunteer work to the meaningful purpose for adult newcomers to learn English that is supported by a professional creates a holistic and sustainable community-wide program. The newcomers are integrated as defined by themselves. The volunteer is empowered to support both as a humanitarian and as a capable ally. Community relationships enhance connections among the people involved, transforming language learning into a vehicle for integration.

Serial Verbs
This book provides an in-depth typological account of the forms, functions, and histories of serial verb constructions. Serial verbs, in which several verbs combine to form a single predicate, describe what is conceptualized as a single event. The verbs in the construction have the same tense, aspect, mood, modality, and evidentiality values, cannot be negated or questioned separately, and usually share the same subject and object. They are a powerful means of portraying various facets of one event, and can express grammatical meanings such as aspect, direction, and causation, particularly in languages where few other means are available. In this volume, Alexandra Aikhenvald seeks to answer unresolved questions such as: What are the parameters of variation in serial verbs? How do serial verbs differ from other, superficially similar multi-verb constructions? How do serial verbs emerge, and what happens to them over time? What role do they play in the representation of event structure? The book uses an inductively-based framework for the analysis and draws on data from languages with different typological profiles and genetic affiliations. It will be of interest to researchers and students from a wide range of fields of linguistics, especially typology, anthropological linguistics, and language contact.

Interactive and Interpersonal Meanings of Grammatical Structures
The study offers an analysis of three grammatical constructions specifically employed in direct performance of directive speech acts in Polish. Constructions of this type have not yet been widely analyzed, as research pertaining to the relation between the grammatical structure of an utterance and its pragmatic effects has focused mainly on indirect speech acts. The study combines a discussion of a wide range of corpus examples with a detailed analysis of hand-picked examples situated in specific contexts. The aim is to show how the grammatical make-up of a construction functions with contextual factors to bring about a range of pragmatic effects pertaining to the speakers' interaction and their interpersonal relation. The framework of the study is the theory of cognitive grammar.

Grammatical Reconstruction
There is still widespread disagreement among historical linguists about how, or whether, syntactic reconstruction can be done. This book presents a comprehensive methodology for syntactic reconstruction, grounded in a constructional understanding of language. The author then uses that methodology to reconstruct Proto-Sogeram, the ancestor to ten languages in Papua New Guinea. Chapters are devoted to phonology, lexicon, verbal morphosyntax, nominal morphosyntax, and syntactic constructions. The work culminates in a sketch of Proto-Sogeram grammar. Based largely on the author's original fieldwork, this is an innovative application of a novel methodology to new data, and the most complete reconstruction of a Papuan proto-language to date. It will be of interest to scholars of language change, language reconstruction, typology, and Papuan languages.
