Mutual Intelligibility Between Closely Related Languages
This book provides a detailed overview of research on mutual intelligibility between closely related languages. The book is organized around three sections which explore different facets of mutual intelligibility research. The first section outlines how to measure levels of intelligibility and its linguistic and extra-linguistic determinants. The second part grapples with questions and issues which arise once the measuring tools are established. A final section reflects on the practical and theoretical value of studying mutual intelligibility, including issues related to language planning and policy, such as cultural, communicative, educational, and economical matters.
Linguistic Counter-Standardization
Language standardization is problematic because it imposes the dominant group's linguistic variety as the only correct one and promotes the idea of unit thinking, i.e., seeing the world as consisting of bounded, internally homogeneous units. This volume examines intentional practices to subvert such processes of language standardization (what we call counter-standardization practices) in language education and other contexts. By suggesting alternative classroom pedagogies, language reclamation processes for indigenous populations, and discourses about (mis)pronunciation, this volume explores more liberatory approaches: the post-unit thinking of language.
Linguistic Corpora and Big Data in Spanish and Portuguese
In recent decades, corpus linguistics has experienced tremendous development in the Hispanic world, along two opposite but complementary approaches: increase in corpus size (corpus linguistics as Big Data) and improvement in document selection and data annotation (corpus linguistics as High Quality Data). The first approach has led to the creation of massive corpora such as EsTenTen; at the same time, it has promoted the use of the web and social networks as corpora. The second perspective gives rise to specialized corpora such as Post Scriptum or Oralia Diacr籀nica del espa簽ol (ODE). The contributions gathered in this volume combine both methods in order to exploit their advantages and to overcome their possible limitations. On the one hand, it addresses the creation and design of small corpora focused on data quality; on the other hand, it offers case studies that make use of both specialized corpora and massive data extracted from the web. Highlighting the complementary nature of both methods is the main idea of this book.
Breaking Gender Barriers
This study explores Bapsi Sidhwa's The Pakistani Bride (1990) and Ice-Candy Man (1998) through Judith Butler's perspective of gender performativity. Bapsi Sidhwa, an award-winning Anglophone Pakistani novelist, is considered a pioneer of the English novel in Pakistan. The dissertation argues that Sidhwa's works resist gender stereotyping and cultural norms related to binary sexuality. Pakistani Bride and Ice-Candy Man challenge socio-cultural gender constructs by depicting characters whose gender identities are shaped by their varied performances rather than their sexual categorization. These characters exhibit multiple shades of gender identities through their actions, suggesting that gender is a fluid and indeterminate entity, unrelated to biological sex.Furthermore, the study contends that i gender is not something we are born with, and not something we have, but something we do - something we perform (Butler, 1990). The socio-cultural taken-for-granted gender construction causes an unequal representation of it in all walks of life that is disrupted through the performativity of various characters.
RDA and Serials Cataloging
Serials and continuing resources present a variety of unique challenges in bibliographic management, from special issues and unnumbered supplements to recording the changes that a long-running periodical can experience over time. Of this book's first edition, the Australian Library Journal declared, "Highly recommended for any situation - technical service departments or library students - where serials need to be cataloged using RDA protocols." Jones, a serials authority in the field and a major contributor to the 3R Project, here updates his authoritative text. Framing the practice within the structure of the IFLA LRM conceptual model on which RDA is now based, and its new modelling of serials, his guide introduces the concept of diachronic work and explains how serials, as a type of diachronic work, can be described using the new attribute element extension plan; explores new developments after the completion of the 3R Project, with references to AACR2 as a touchstone; introduces the new term work group and demonstrates its usefulness in enabling relationships and supporting collocation; demonstrates how serials catalogers' work fits in the cooperative context of OCLC, CONSER, and NACO; and presents examples of how RDA records can ultimately engage with the Semantic Web.

Maasai Songs, Riddles and Narratives
Songs and poetry are an essential part of life in many communities. In societies where traditional customs are strongly adhered to, there are certain rituals that are observed to the accompaniment of songs, dirges and other poetic forms. Apart from thee ritual tunes, there are also songs that are composed spontaneously as the occasion demands. These include lullabies, love songs, war songs and political songs. But whatever function they serve, songs and poetry embody a people's philosophy, beliefs, values and, sometimes, their historical development.

About inclusive language in French and English
Inclusive language is a non-discriminatory form of expression regardless of sexual or gender identity, avoiding gender stereotypes. It is a powerful means of promoting gender equality (United Nations). It alludes to the generic value of the masculine that designates all human beings, and by this very fact, it does not allow visualizing the feminine. We have focused on the emergence of inclusive language in different linguistic communities, its development in different fields, the analysis of the linguistic tools used and their controversies, and the different contexts of its use within the same community. The present book has as its starting point two research works on inclusive language, carried out as teachers of foreign languages at the Bachillerato de Bellas Artes, Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Our recognition to the institution and to our colleagues.
Writing for Inclusion
Writing for Inclusion (WIN) wishes to develop high quality and care systems in childhood education. The priority has been to sensitize very young learners towards care and inclusion. The book shows the learning modules to train teachers to tackle care in education within their classrooms. It also provides students with materials both visual and written to create texts both orally and in writing to advocate for inclusion through stories. As for digital competence, the book explores the possibilities of new technologies to engage in active citizenship. Inclusion practices to create inclusive environments, such as the integration of children with a disability or an awareness campaign for minority students are valuable because they stem from the concept of "Care", fostering empathy in 4th-year primary education students. This book is about building and implementing a methodology that interprets those special needs in four European schools and acts upon them through digital storytelling.
Multilingual Assessment - Finding the Nexus?
A persistent monolingual paradigm still pervades teaching and assessment practices in different educational contexts. How is this paradigm being responded to across regions and (sub)disciplines of language study? In answering this question, the volume draws on insights from the project MULTILA - Multilingual and multimodal assessment, jointly coordinated by the University of Education, Heidelberg, Germany, and the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. This volume is an opportunity to understand practices in both environments and to identify commonalities and differences. While European contributors to the dialogue come from a language education and assessment background, their South African interlocutors approach the subject from a largely applied linguistics perspective. The outcome is an account in ten chapters of multilingual assessment from perspectives that are both disciplinary and regional.
Migrating across times and cultures; Metaphorical images of migration in the U.S. and Italian newspaper discourse between the 20th and 21st centuries
This book is strongly related to two essential features of human life: migratory movements and metaphors. Migratory movements can be undoubtedly defined as an enduring characteristic of our global history. As history and literature, from the Homeric poems to the Bible, testify, migration is an inherent feature of humanity. Metaphor is more than a linguistic and stylistic phenomenon; it is primarily a feature of human language ability. Considering that metaphors are one of the means through which people organize their experience of life and that newspapers considerably influence people's perspectives on reality and opinions, by analysing the metaphorical representation of migrants in newspapers we might define, to some extent, how people perceive, think of and ultimately experience migration.

Wife of Bath 2.0
Bachelor Thesis in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, language: English, abstract: A description of what can be regarded as medievalism or neomedievalism will be the focus of the first chapter of this thesis and will be the foundation for the following analysis. The analysis will then focus on Geoffrey Chaucer's The Wife of Bath's Prologue and The Wife of Bath's Tale which is part of The Canterbury Tales. After bringing the basic themes, structure, and linguistic aspects to the surface, these will build the foundation of a comparative analysis of three modern products which adapt Chaucer's original prologue and tale and reinterpret them in their own way. The three examples in focus will be two poems, the first being Jean "Binta" Breeze's The Wife of Bath Speaks in Brixton Market, and secondly Patience Agbabi's What Do Women Like Bes?. The third one is a rap song by Baba Brinkman named The Wife of Bath. All three will be analysed and compared to the original in terms of their content, their structure and language. After the close readings and comparisons, the findings will be revisited in an attempt to recognise a pattern in how they all tried to bring something from the Middle Ages into modern times and see what and why they have changed to achieve this. This chapter will also include reflections on the actuality of the original and the need to refer back to it time and again. Before concluding the thesis, a final evaluation of whether the poems and the song can be regarded as neomedievalism or medievalism will follow to take recourse to the introductory thoughts on these concepts. Thus, the question of research will be how each contemporary medievalist appropriation of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale thematises the issues that are implied in Chaucer's work and in what way they update it for a modern audience to bring forward their message and what they regard as important.

CVs and Freelancers
Considering that in the linguistic market some translators and interpreters without corresponding university degrees are active, it is easy to understand the demand of agencies for quality evidences. On the one hand, the stated requirements very often don't in any way prove that the agencies do indeed offer the necessary quality, and on the other hand must offend qualified linguistics with a university degree. Nobody asks a lawyer, architect, or surgeon for a CV before engaging him for a service. Besides, agencies try to pay the same (lowest) rates to any subcontractor, and this doesn't make the situation any better. Some agencies let non-professionals do the work or service required just because they offer best rates. This book explains the author's point of view.
The novel of introspection in Brazil
This study examines the expression of subjectivity in Albertina Bertha's fiction, specifically in her lyrical novel and philosophical digressions Exalta癟瓊o, published in 1916. In this way, we are interested in the subjective processes and narrative techniques for presenting consciousness, as well as the author's affiliation with the introspective novel in Brazil, situating her within Brazilian literature through this modality. We intend to place her in a lineage, in correlation with other novels of introspection, verifying how these works echoed the ruptures with Realism in Brazil, the dialogue between Brazilian writers and the aesthetics of the late 19th century, especially Symbolism, what the meaning of space is in the narratives and its relationship with subjective processes, and which language procedures will be taken up by other Brazilian writers in narratives exploring subjectivity. In addition, this work aims to contribute to the development of a history - as yet non-existent - of the novel of introspection in Brazil.

Edgar Allan Poe Theory of Literature
Edgar Allan Poe's Theory of Literature considers the core ideas of the Boston native about what he conceives of this art of language. Without being articulated as a treatise, its formulations contain elements that give meaning to literary knowledge from the other side, from that position where the critic and essayist examines what underlies the composition of this linguistic form that opens the expression of colloquial language. to insert ourselves into a new space in the word.In the case of Allan Poe, he elaborates some of his ideas taking his own composition as a reason for analysis, as he does with the poem The Raven where he breaks down step by step the creative strategies he used in his text. For the American author there are fundamental notions that writing must contain, formulating them with a critical sense. And although it does not do so with academic rigor or philosophical conceptual refinement, there is in its statements, theses and principles that serve as a basis for understanding what exists in literary creation.
Postmodernism and the devices of symbolism and originality
Herv矇 Le Tellier's effort at literary representation, bypassing modern aesthetics and thus fixated on postmodernism, so to speak, reduces the situation to a procedure for presenting in a certain way. In fact, he makes use of the devices of symbolism and originality, with a view to reclaiming elements that have been put on show. Using processes and effects such as discontinuity, hypertextuality and renarrativization, Herv矇 Le Tellier's L'Anomalie makes explicit use of the devices of symbolism and originality to achieve his aim of grasping the world around him, with a view to touching on avant-garde scientific insinuations and related fantasy, and to more or less voluntarily interest a hypothetical audience.
