A Way With Words
The essence of the book is based on excerpts from discussions in an online forum on words and usage in the English language, which was convened by the author. Topics range from the mundane to the highly academic, and have often spawned lively debates particularly around controversial usage, folk etymology, and the odd syntax that seemingly has no logical basis. The highlight of this experience was the realization of just how rich English is and how replete it is with subtle nuances and depth of meaning. The contributions came from members around the world who had given their abundant knowledge, wit, and wisdom over the seven years of the forum. The list was called Wordplay-L, and the idea of synthesizing the content into a book with literary themes was there right from the start.The book reads more like proceedings of a virtual meeting. The reader is led into each theme room to listen in to conversations raw and unfiltered. The author does little more than present the speakers and lets the reader get exposed to all facets of the debates. Thus, he/she is left to form their own opinions and draw their own conclusions.The founding of this forum was inspired by earlier works on the English language such as those by Richard Lederer, William Safire, or Steven Pinker. The membership comprised varied backgrounds, but primarily teachers, copy editors, reviewers, columnists, programmers, and librarians. This mix made for very informative debates, laced with wit, humor, and entertaining exchanges.

Formal type-theoretic semantics tames this 'zoo' of objects by assuming only a small number of ontologically primitive categories and by obtaining the objects of all other categories through constructions out of these primitives. This Element surveys arguments for this reduction of semantic categories. It compares the ontological commitments of different such reductions and establishes relations between competing foundational semantic ontologies. In doing so, it yields insights into the requirements on minimal semantic ontologies for natural language and the challenges for semantic ontology engineering.

The Representation of Time in Fitzgerald's "Benjamin Button"

For this purpose, the general representation of time up to the Jazz Age, which Fitzgerald can be assigned to, will be illustrated first. Then, the age roles prevalent in the Jazz Age of the early 20th century will be examined more closely. Among other things, the concept of the 'Normal Biography' coined by Michael Basseler as well as the fear of old age and the rejuvenation projects made possible by new scientific methods will be discussed. Furthermore, an analysis of Fitzgerald's temporal structuring is carried out in order to understand the background and motivations of the same. For this purpose, the short story is examined on the basis of the three threads of age: Benjamin Button's chronological age, physical age, and psychological age. Then, the importance of situating the story in reality is analyzed and the changes in Benjamin Button's relationships will be discussed. Finally, the criticism of the concept of age through the protagonist's reverse biography is highlighted before a final conclusion closes the paper.
Framing in the Discourse of the Climate Crisis. A Comparison of Political and Activist Narratives and their Effects

The thesis argues that framing is a powerful tool in shaping public perception and urgency regarding climate change. Understanding the differences in framing between politicians and climate activists is important for several reasons. It sheds light on how different groups influence public perception and the overall climate discourse, and provides insights into the effectiveness of various rhetorical strategies in mobilizing support or opposition. The paper is structured as follows: First of all, there will be theoretical background about discourse analysis in general and framing strategies in particular. The issue of the climate crisis, which is subordinate to the strategies, will also be addressed, as well as the use of frames in the discourse. In the following analysis-part of the paper, selected speeches by activists and politicians are examined. By comparing their rhetoric, in particular the use of frame strategies, the aim is to highlight the importance and complexity of these strategies for the public politic discourse, particularly how framing influences the discourse surrounding the climate crisis and its broader implications. This should enable a deeper understanding of how language is used in politics, discourse and the public sphere but especially in terms of the global climate crisis.

Speaking the map
This collection of fourteen texts in Komnzo offers an insight into the language and culture of the Farem people, their storytelling tradition, oral history, mythology and everyday life. It contains stories from nine narrators, which were transcribed, translated and analysed by the researcher with the help of the Komnzo language committee. All texts are presented in a parallel text version arranged in columns (Komnzo/English) and in an interlinearised and glossed version. The book focuses thematically on landscape, place names and locality. It includes a description and analysis of the way Komnzo speakers conceptualise this semantic domain.
Epenthesis and beyond
The study of epenthesis, or the insertion of a non-etymological segment, has been at the core of phonological theory from the start, and recent approaches extend beyond phonology to include phonetic considerations, as well as morphological, morphosyntactic, and lexical interactions. This volume includes 12 of the many papers presented at the workshop "Epenthesis and Beyond" held at Stony Brook University in 2021, whose goal was to provide a forum for scholars who approach epenthesis and other types of insertion from new perspectives. The articles selected for this volume represent the exciting new approaches to epenthesis that linguists are engaged in. They cover a wide range of research questions, including how different types of insertion within the same language can use different epenthetic segments, and how across languages the same phonetic material can have different phonological interpretations. Topics like feature epenthesis, insertion vs. deletion, vowel predictability, nucleus-less syllables, and epenthetic segment quality, are also explored. Some of the new tools employed by the authors include ultrasound, Information Theory, and textsetting (the study of the way poets map their text onto a metrical grid). This term paper provides both historical contexts and literary analyses, which are structured as follows. After portraying the prevailing circumstances of the 1950s in the USA, there will be a short overview of the emergence of the Beat Generation as well as their aims and works. After that, a short historical context of jazz music is given. To better understand the context of his novel, Kerouac's life and his path into the Beat Generation are examined. This is followed by a brief introduction to his novel "On The Road", followed by an analysis of specific passages that highlight the importance of jazz to his narration. Then, literary peculiarities are discussed, e.g. stylistic parallels between musical improvisation in jazz music and Kerouac's writing style. Finally, there will be a summary of the main arguments regarding the meaning of jazz for the Beat Generation on the example of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road".

A grammar of Mandan
Mandan is a Siouan language of North Dakota, near the geographic center of North America. There are no longer any first-language speakers after the last fluent speaker passed away in 2016. This grammar has been built from archival recordings of Mandan speakers from the 1960s through 2010, plus field work by the author undertaken between 2014 and 2016. The data from these various sources allowed for an in-depth description of the key aspects of the grammar of Mandan with special attention to the language's complex verbal and nominal morphology. This book also includes an overview of Mandan narrative structure, culminating with an interlinear gloss of a traditional Mandan narrative and its free translation into English. This grammar is written to be used by as general an audience as possible, including Mandan community members, scholars who wish to research Siouan languages, linguistic typologists, historical linguists, and other individuals who aim to conduct research on an indigenous language of North America.
Post-predicate elements in the Western Asian Transition Zone
This volume explores word-order phenomena across a phylogenetically diverse sample of languages covering a region loosely referred to as the Western Asian Transition Zone, approximately corresponding to western Iran, northern Iraq, eastern Turkey and the Caucasus. The sample includes representatives from four branches of Indo-European (Iranian, Hellenic, Armenian, Indo-Aryan) as well as Turkic, Semitic, Kartvelian, Northwest Caucasian and Northeast Caucasian. Methodologically, we apply a corpus-based approach to word-order, building on two purpose-built and fully accessible data-bases of spoken language corpora, WOWA (Word Order in Western Asia), and HamBam (Hamedan-Bamberg Corpus of Contemporary Spoken Persian). The majority of the languages are historically OV, yet exhibit high rates of post-verbal elements, and these constitute the primary focus of the volume. One of the major findings is the importance of semantic role in determining pre- versus post-verbal placement of clausal constituents: We identify a consistent bias towards post-verbal placement of spatial Goals, which is amplified by increasing areal proximity to the VO languages of the southwestern periphery of the region (Semitic). In the languages in and adjacent to the Caucasus, on the other hand, we find stronger effects of information structure in triggering post-verbal position. Along with contributions on individual languages and varieties, the volume includes an overview chapter outlining the theoretical background and the data sources, summary chapters on sub-regions, as well as contributions from an experimental and psycholinguistic perspective.

Word Phonology in a Systemic Functional Linguistic Framework
This book provides an original, full-scale, exploration in applying the principles and practices of Systemic-Functional Linguistics at the level of word phonology in English, German, Welsh and Tera (Nigeria). The relationship between lexicogrammar and word phonology is demonstrated, and the place of word phonology is set within the full range of a hierarchy of phonological expression. The function of phonology is given a new understanding in its relationship to lexicogrammar, and the notion of system is given extensive illustration in the numerous networks that are proposed. The special characteristic features of Systemic Phonology are compared with with the theory and structures of other approaches to phonology. The choice of the four languages is deliberate: English as the most described language in the world; German as a language in the same linguistic family as English; Welsh as another Indo-European language, but from a different linguistic family; and Tera as a language with absolutely no family connection to the others. The principal units of word phonology are the foot and its equivalent in non-stress languages, the syllable, the phoneme and allophone. Allophonic variants are included, since their phonetic realization is determined by the phonology of a language, rather than on purely phonetic criteria.

Language is a key element in constructing and reinforcing social identities. Through hate speech, language becomes an instrument of creating and spreading stereotypes, discrimination, and social injustices based on attributes such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, nationality, political ideology, disability, or sexual orientation. The rise of digital communication, especially social media, has made hate speech a major topic of research in various fields. Deconstructing Reality in Blindness and Slaughterhouse-Five

In each novel, characters seek refuge from suffering by entering states that detach them from their grim surroundings. The concept of "ecstasy," rooted in the Greek term "ekstasis," or "standing outside oneself," connects both narratives, as protagonists move between harsh physical realities and imagined, more bearable worlds. In Slaughterhouse-Five, Billy Pilgrim mentally transports to the planet Tralfamadore to escape the traumas of war, while the characters in Blindness experience an epidemic that forces them into confinement, echoing Plato's Cave Allegory as they struggle with their sense of reality. Despite their journeys into alternative worlds, the characters ultimately realize that true escape is impossible; instead, they gain insight into life's hardships. This analysis reveals how creating alternative realities is only a step toward understanding and navigating real-life suffering.
