The Syntactic Process
This book covers topics in formal linguistics, intonational phonology, computational linguistics, and experimental psycholinguistics, presenting them as an integrated theory of the language faculty. In this book Mark Steedman argues that the surface syntax of natural languages maps spoken and written forms directly to a compositional semantic representation that includes predicate-argument structure, quantification, and information structure without constructing any intervening structural representation. His purpose is to construct a principled theory of natural grammar that is directly compatible with both explanatory linguistic accounts of a number of problematic syntactic phenomena and a straightforward computational account of the way sentences are mapped onto representations of meaning. The radical nature of Steedman's proposal stems from his claim that much of the apparent complexity of syntax, prosody, and processing follows from the lexical specification of the grammar and from the involvement of a small number of universal rule-types for combining predicates and arguments. These syntactic operations are related to the combinators of Combinatory Logic, engendering a much freer definition of derivational constituency than is traditionally assumed. This property allows Combinatory Categorial Grammar to capture elegantly the structure and interpretation of coordination and intonation contour in English as well as some well-known interactions between word order, coordination, and relativization across a number of other languages. How to Set Parameters
Over the past decade, generative grammarians have viewed language acquisition as a process of fixing option points or parameters defined in Universal Grammar. Here David Lightfoot addresses the crucial question of what it takes to set a parameter - of what kind of experience is needed to trigger the emergence of a natural kind of grammar. Lightfoot asserts that parameter setting is not sensitive to embedded material, and that it is triggered only by robust elements that are structurally simple. He observes that morphological properties play a significant role in setting parameters which have widespread syntactic effects. Using evidence from data on diachronic changes and from current work in syntactic theory, Lightfoot makes precise claims about the triggering experience that can explain a number of historical puzzles. He argues that the changes could have taken place in the way they did only if language acquisition proceeds on the basis of simple, unembedded experiences.

Diachronic, Typological, and Areal Aspects of Converbs
This book deals with the category of converbs, whose denomination refers to a set of structures which cross-linguistically are not comparable. Specifically, we tackle the following topics: (1) converbs and related constructions as areal features, distinguishing between a general coordinating and subordinating type of converb; (2) converbs in the context of linguistic families, particularly in the Indo-European domain, displaying different non-finite structures to express the adverbial domain; (3) converbial constructions and competing construction types, (4) the diachronic typology of converbs and their source constructions.
The Preposition Min
After Ernst Jenni's three well known basic volumes dealing with the Hebrew prepositions Beth, Kaph and Lamed a further study of the third most common preposition in Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic was a scholarly desideratum. This study of the preposition Min is presented here. The aim is to advance linguistic research on the Old Testament and to help to clarify a number of linguistic and semantic doubts and translation problems. Some new paths are being taken: The polysemous network that forms Min is systematically presented, the system of Hebrew prepositions is expanded to include a new overall theory and the question of the logical subject in passive sentences is answered in a new way.
Spelling Identities
This volume contains a selection of papers given at the 2nd Sym posium on Linguistic Identities: Spelling, Writing and Identity, held on 29 and 30 November 2021 at the University of Stavanger, Norway. New Gaelic Speakers in Nova Scotia and Scotland
What are the main similarities between new cohorts of Gaelic speakers in Nova Scotia and Scotland, and what key differences distinguish them? In Scotland, public policy to support and maintain the language has increased substantially in the past 40 years. In addition to Scotland's 57,602 speakers, however, Gaelic has persisted in Nova Scotia since the 18th century and a third of Nova Scotians are descended from families who spoke the language historically. As a response to policymakers' language planning priorities in both polities and drawing on three years of ethnographic research in Scotland and Nova Scotia, this book presents a comparative analysis of new speaker motivations, identities and linguistic ideologies. An innovative approach to examining bilingual discourses is employed to demonstrate key distinctions and commonalities among new Gaelic speakers, with a view to informing future policy to generate greater numbers of proficient speakers on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the monograph, professor M.Mirtozhiev's textbook "Phonetics of the Uzbek language" addresses the issue of the classification of speech sounds in world and Uzbek linguistics on the topic of speech sounds and their classification, reacting to the research carried out in this regard. Some speech sounds recorded by the scientist commented that they are not observed in the classification of other linguists. The scientist's approaches to syllabics and accentuation of the Uzbek language M.Mirtozhiev was explained in Uzbek through his arguments proving that the word accent is not dynamic in nature, but quantitative in nature.Professor M.Mirtozhiev spoke in detail about the semantic content of the lexical meaning in his book ''The semasiology of the Uzbek language".While the author analyze M.Mirtozhiev's conclusions on this matter, they note that the sound complex, in which imitation-pictorial words and exclamations are expressed, represents not a concept with lexical meaning, but a sign of understanding. Coding in Ajami Script
The research explores the morphosyntactic variations and scribal practices in the Old Kanembu manuscripts with a focus on identifying and bringing out the codes used by Borno 'Ulama'u in disseminating the exegesis (Tafsīr) of the Qur'ān in Old Kanembu (henceforth, OKb) and its modern variant into the linguistic spotlight for language documentation. OKb is one of the oldest Saharan languages that has been reduced in writing Ajami script since the early development and expansion of Islam into the Kanem-Bornu Empire between the 12th and the 16th centuries. OKb is the language whose footprint can only be traced to the ancient Qur'ānic manuscripts of old Borno. A modern-day variant of OKb, known as Tarjumo, is still in use by the modern-day Borno 'ulamā'u' in describing, interpreting, and analyzing written Arabic texts in the Kanuri society and the Kanembu/Kanuri community in the diaspora. OKb is used as the language of the Qur'ānic commentary and Tarjumo is the hybrid of OKb, modern Kanembu, and Kanuri used in both oral and written forms. In this work, we examined, identified, and analysed a selected part of the Qur'ān chapter 79 Sūrat- An-Nāziʿāt 'Those who pull out''.
Feminism, Corpus-Assisted Research and Language Inclusivity
This Element presents an investigation into the use of the gender inclusive strategy schwa in a corpus of tweets; the schwa is employed in Italian to overcome grammatical (feminine and masculine) morphological inflections, having at its core linguistic and social binarism. The investigation is set in a country where LGBTQIA communities still face institutional discrimination, yet it is contextualised in the growing work on inclusivity discussed in languages and contexts worldwide. The corpus is examined quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as read through a triangulation of two frameworks: Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies and Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis. The findings, obtained from corpus-assisted research and digital ethnography, show that the new linguistic strategy is used creatively, functionally, and not exclusively as a self-representation tool but is also a viable and powerful replacement for generic sexist language.

This research aims to analyze Folha Universal as an instrument for propagating the ideology of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, to construct logical and argumentative explanations about persuasion in religious discourse within Folha Universal's editorials and to establish links between the content of the editorials and the main articles in the newspaper. To our knowledge, there is no research that encompasses theories related to Discourse Analysis in relation to Folha Universal. Looking at it from the perspective of French Discourse Analysis will provide other researchers with opportunities to learn about the ideology of this important media outlet. In ordinary editorials, there are always enunciators who, most of the time, are not the ones writing them, but the newspaper itself. However, in Folha Universal we noticed something different: neither the author of the text nor the newspaper are enunciators, but the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God itself.

Courtly Love in the Canterbury Tales
Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,7, University of Bayreuth, language: English, abstract: Courtly love embraces a beautiful lady, married or unobtainable, who was the object of love for a knight. In general courtly love was secret and between man and woman of noble status and it was not practiced between husbands and wives. Such relationships did not exist in real medieval life. Marriages were mostly arranged and women were seen as property to their husbands. It was more an "available fiction which informed the cultural climate, much as the wider conventions of chivalry did" (Rudd 2001:33). This is a relatively vague definition of the topic of courtly love and it only summarizes the most important points. This paper will work out the origins and the meaning of courtly love more intensive, watching its first origins and its appearance in the Romance of the Rose, and it will mention and describe every important characteristic. These characteristics will be a guideline to show Chaucer's treatment of the topic in his work The Canterbury Tales. Elements of courtly love appear in the Prologue, the Knight's Tale, the Merchant's Tale, and in the Franklin's Tale. These elements will be shown and explained. Finally a conclusion will summarize the most important points.
