Generic Structure of Masters' Theses in Applied Linguistics
Writing a Master of Arts (MA) thesis is challenging for postgraduate students. This complexity is of great significance when writing in their second language. From this perspective, genre-centered approaches help non-natives enhance their understanding of academic and scientific texts. This study comparatively investigated the rhetorical differences/similarities in all sections of MA theses produced by Iraqi and international students in applied linguistics.
Teaching Climate Change to Children
Teaching Climate Change to Children describes the journey of two literacy researchers to learn about climate change and support relevant literacy pedagogy for young children (pre-K-6). The authors argue that climate change and social justice are inextricable from each other; that children in the younger grades are capable of learning about climate change; and that reading, writing, and language study is well-suited to this work. Three anchoring themes are offered to support literacy-based climate pedagogy--interconnectivity, relationality, and action--with rich classroom examples and different entry points to engage with these themes, either by "starting small" or "going big." The text includes chapters on the importance of taking an emotionally affirming stance and on the potential of incorporating arts-based methods. With love for the Earth and one another at its core, this accessible book takes a broad view of what it means to cultivate sustainable futures for our planet, for teachers, and for children in today's schools.Book Features: A unique focus on teaching about climate change to young children, as opposed to adolescents.Insights drawn from a yearlong teacher inquiry group with classroom teachers and from literacy methods courses with preservice teachers.Explicit attention to the importance of humanizing and care-based practices in literacy-based climate pedagogy.Classroom examples collected across four urban public schools where teachers used the activities and resources discussed in the book.User-friendly textboxes with suggestions and questions to guide discussion, reflection, and action.
MHRA Style Guide
The MHRA Style Guide has been widely used by scholarly authors writing about the Humanities since its first edition in 1971. It offers practical guidance on how to cite sources from medieval manuscripts to software and social media. Rules are provided to help working authors deal consistently with issues from quoting weights and measures ('5kg', or '5 kg'?) to the spelling of European city names ('Lyons', or 'Lyon'?). There is detailed advice on indexing and on the compilation of bibliographies, including thorny issues around how to alphabetize names. While MHRA style is used by many journals and book series, it is also standard in many British universities as the style to follow for essays, dissertations, and doctoral theses. A Quick Guide allows new users to get started without fuss. Scholarly practice evolves over time, and this 2024 revision is the result of close scrutiny by a joint panel of scholarly authors and editors. The aim was to clarify, to simplify, and to modernize, reflecting today's ubiquitous use of online resources. The Guide is itself freely available online, and is fully Open Access, published under a Creative Commons licence. This print edition, which has now cumulatively sold over 50,000 copies, is made available as cheaply as is practicable.

Beyond the Translator’s Invisibility
The value of nuanced approaches to the concept of translator invisibilityThe question of whether to disclose that a text is a translation and thereby give visibility to the translator has dominated discussions on translation throughout history. Despite becoming one of the most ubiquitous terms in translation studies, however, the concept of translator (in)visibility is often criticized for being vague, overly adaptable, and grounded in literary contexts. This interdisciplinary volume therefore draws on concepts from fields such as sociology, the digital humanities, and interpreting studies to develop and operationalize theoretical understandings of translator visibility beyond these existing criticisms and limitations. Through empirical case studies spanning areas including social media research, reception studies, institutional translation, and literary translation, this volume demonstrates the value of understanding the visibilities of translators and translation in the plural and adds much-needed nuance to one of translation studies' most pervasive, polarizing, and imprecise concepts.Contributors: Klaus Kaindl (University of Vienna), Ren矇e Desjardins (Universit矇 de Saint-Boniface), Helle V. Talking for Success
'At last, a book about how language works that is for everyone' - Stephanie Schnurr, Professor of Linguistics, Warwick University, EnglandTalking for Success by Jonathan Clifton is an engaging, research-grounded guide to becoming the kind of communicator people trust, follow, and remember. If you've ever walked away from a meeting wishing you'd sounded sharper, tried to persuade a client and felt momentum fade, or struggled to make small talk feel natural, this book turns "good communication" from a vague ambition into a set of learnable skills. Use it to sharpen interviews, sales calls, presentations, networking, conflict resolution, and leadership.Clifton is a conversation analyst who has taught business communication at European universities for over 20 years, and he wrote this book to make the science of talk practical and accessible. His core message is refreshing: strong speaking isn't a mysterious "gift of the gab" - it's something you can learn by understanding the hidden codes running through conversation. What makes Talking for Success stand out among communication skills and public speaking books is its method. Instead of invented dialogues or generic advice, Clifton shows you real-world language in action - transcribed, slowed down, and explained - so you can see exactly what makes messages land (and what makes them fail). The focus is spoken language - the everyday talk we rely on at work and in relationships, but rarely analyse. And because impact isn't only verbal, Clifton also examines paralinguistic cues (stress, laughter, tone, volume) and body language - gesture, gaze, touch - so you can deliver the same message with more power and precision.Inside, you'll get 23 fascinating analyses of real-life talk, from high-profile conversations to everyday moments like sales pitches, small talk, and business meetings. You'll explore scenarios such as apologising, debating, negotiating, presenting, public speaking (when it goes right and when it goes wrong), team talk, and politeness -each chapter designed to stand alone so you can dip in wherever you need help most. You'll see, for example, how persuasive sales language is built: strategic word choice, confident descriptions, and even the use of props and "expert" identity to nudge buyers toward a decision. Along the way, Clifton shows you how framing can shift meaning, why questions can control direction, and how credibility and goodwill can strengthen your position when the stakes are high. Then comes the payoff: Part Two distills everything into "The Secret Codes" - 100 actionable ways to improve how you do things with words and play language games more effectively. Clifton pulls the codes together into strategies that help you speak more effectively in every area of life - for work, for love, for fun, and everything in between. Think of it as a communication toolkit for influence and persuasion, negotiation skills, leadership communication, and confident public speaking - without the fluff.Ideal for managers, entrepreneurs, sales teams, HR, educators, and students who want confident, persuasive, authentic speaking that drives results fast.

The Creative Gesture
This open access book offers a concise overview of the theories constructed within the various human sciences around the theme of creativity as a symbolic capacity to link things together: it manifests itself when the individual endowed with a certain type of intelligence encounters cultural and social conditions that enable them to develop that capacity to the maximum, rather than inhibiting it or diverting it to other fields where it is doomed to failure. Even the most intimate of human expressiveness is considered as a result of an active social relationality. Social dimensions of creativity (evaluation, primary socialization, motivation, leadership) and "creative processes" (creative attitude, creative gesture, divergent thinking, problem-solving capacity, interdisciplinary approach, randomness, algorithmic creativity) are also analysed. The book concludes by evaluating the course taken in the light of the relational theory of society: the development of creativity cannot beconceived outside of self-other relations. This book is the result of a translation done with the help of artificial intelligence. The text has subsequently been revised further by a professional copy editor in order to refine the work stylistically.

Roman Liturgy and Frankish Creativity
This incisive, in-depth study unearths the significance of a neglected group of early medieval manuscripts, those which transmit the Ordines Romani. These texts present detailed scripts for Christian ceremonies that narrate the gestures, motions, actions and settings of ritual performance, with particular orientation to the Roman church. While they are usually understood as liturgical, and thus lacking any particular creative flair, Arthur Westwell here foregrounds their manuscript permutations in order to reveal their extraordinary dynamism. He reflects on how the Carolingian Church undertook to improve liturgical practice and understanding, questioning the accepted idea of a "reform" aimed at uniformity led by the monarch. Through these manuscripts, Westwell reveals a diversity of motivations in the recording of Roman liturgy and demonstrates the remarkable sophistication of Carolingian manuscript compilers.
Discourse Analysis and Bible Translation
With simplified language and terminology, this coursebook assists Bible translators with limited linguistics training to recognize differences in natural structures of the target and source languages for both narrative and behavioral genres. Concepts are carefully introduced with illustrative examples from both the Old and New Testaments followed by questions, exercises, and applications that effectively engage translation teams and individual translators to improve their draft translations and provide reasons for their decisions. These exercises and assignments promote careful scholarship by empowering translators to confidently present biblical truth in natural and accurate ways in the target language. As relevant, sections are addressed specifically to speakers of verb-initial, verb-medial, and verb-final languages. Further topics includeconnectors and constituent order in the source and target languages;the reporting of speech and the preferred positions for speech orienters;motivations for referring to participants and concepts in different ways;the most appropriate ways of exhorting different groups of people;rhetorical questions, conditional clauses, and relative clauses; andculturally appropriate ways of translating biblical poetry.Advanced concepts such as background versus foreground and the topic-focus distinction are presented in easy-to-follow, understandable terminology. In addition to translators, this coursebook will be of great interest to academics, training institutions, and field workers. Even experienced discourse instructors will learn new insights and new ways of teaching these concepts. Consultants and advisors assisting translation teams may want to use this coursebook in leading workshops or to integrate instruction in ongoing translation sessions. A variety of users will find it easy to read, deeply informative, and profoundly practical for translation. This book is printed in full color to enhance the illustrations: "We used markers of one color for the poetic text and markers of other colors for different parts of the analysis."

Communicating the News in Early Modern Europe
This history of early modern news focuses on news itself rather than specific material forms. Centering on movement through different media, time, and place, it makes the case for a truly comparative, pan-European history of news. After the Introduction, the second section, News Moves, explores how we think about and research news culture and news communication, demonstrating movement is more important than static forms. The third, News Sings, focuses on news ballads, comparing actors, publics, music, and soundscapes of ballad singing in several European cities, highlighting the central role of immaterial elements, such as sound, music and voice. The fourth, News Counts, argues that seeing news the way a machine might read it--through its metadata--is one way of moving beyond form, allowing us to find surprising commonalities in news cultures which differ greatly in both time and place.
