Data Alchemy
In today's digital age, data is generated at an unprecedented rate and in vast quantities. This data holds immense value, but it is often unstructured, messy, and challenging to interpret. Data alchemy is the process of applying various techniques and methodologies to convert this raw data into a valuable asset. The book begins with an introduction to the concept of data alchemy, highlighting its importance in modern-day decision-making and problem-solving. We then delve into the foundational principles of data transformation, including understanding raw data, preprocessing, and cleaning. These foundational concepts form the basis for more advanced topics covered later in the book.As we progress through the chapters, we explore a wide range of techniques used in data alchemy, including statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization. We also examine how these techniques can be applied to real-world scenarios, such as business intelligence, healthcare informatics, and social impact analysis.

The language of violence and its narrative developments
In the midst of the multiplicity of the contemporary Brazilian literary field, the mark of realist aesthetics has not been erased. On the contrary, it survives in many narratives along with the incorporation of mass communication languages, representing a worldview marked by the re-symbolisation of violence - since the symbolisation of violence means a discursive tool for dealing with it. In this book, we start from the perspective of academic criticism to propose a reading of the novel "Eu recebia as piores not穩cias dos seus lindos l獺bios" (I would get the worst news from your beautiful lips), by writer Mar癟al Aquino. The narrative proposes a fictional world, based on hostile reality and permeated by intermedia codes, capable of generating a performative experience of language and a relationship with the real through impact. The aim of this study is to understand how this impact of violence occurs and the narrative developments that take place in the Romanesque universe.

Exploring and Expanding Literacy Histories of the United States
Exploring and Expanding Literacy Histories of the United States brings together new scholarship and critical perspectives hitherto missing from dominant narratives to offer a racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse record of the history of American reading instruction. This book addresses the many important developments in the history of literacy in the United States that occurred outside of mainstream public education, in marginalized communities in and outside of traditional school contexts.Instead of a "top-down" approach of prominent thinkers and theorists, the book intends to cover key blind spots, including literacy education in Indigenous nations, and how marginalized groups have fought for access to education, by applying a critical lens to the under-recognized histories of literacy. This volume is essential reading for courses on History of Reading Education and Foundations of Literacy.

Translation Classics in Context
Translation Classics in Context carefully considers the relationship between translation and the classics. It presents readers with revelatory and insightful case studies that investigate translations produced as part of nexuses of colonial resistance and liberation across Africa and in Ireland; translations of novels and folklore collections that influence not just other fictions, but stage productions and entire historical disciplines; struggles over Ukrainian and Russian literature and how it is shaped and transferred; and the role of the academy and the curriculum in creating notions of classic translations.Along the way it covers oral poetry, saints, scholars, Walter Scott and Jules Verne, not to mention Leo Tolstoy and the Corpse Bride making her way from folklore to Frankenstein and into the world of Disney animation. Translation and Pragmatics
Translation and Pragmatics aims to provide a fundamental grounding of key phenomena, theories, and concepts in the field of pragmatics and of some of their manifestations both within and across languages and cultures. The originality of this textbook largely resides in its pedagogical approach which involves familiarising students with the pragmatic phenomena of deixis, speech acts, implicature, and (im)politeness first and foremost through a systematic exposure to concrete, authentic data from a broad spectrum of texts and media (e.g., ads, memes, films, videogames) while showcasing how these phenomena are relayed in different types of translation. With warm-up exercises, illustrative case studies, mini-research activities as well as further reading, this is an essential textbook for translation and intercultural communication students but can also be a useful resource for anyone interested in the interface between pragmatics, translation and/or intercultural communication, media, and the synergies thereof.

Evaluative categorization based on a specific reference
The object of the research is the evaluative categories of "good" and "bad" concepts in English and Uzbek languages, which are considered as a result of the evaluative categorization of objects of reality and abstract entities. Under evaluative categorization in the work, following N.N. Boldirev understands the mental correlation of an object or phenomenon with a certain axiological category (dynamic aspect), or the grouping of objects and phenomena according to the nature of their assessment into the corresponding evaluative categories, that is, a system of evaluative categories (static aspect) (Boldirev 2002). The specificity of the object lies in the fact that the evaluation categories are not directly related to the real world.

Who tells the story?
"Ceremonies of Oblivion", based on the protagonist's quest to find out the identity of the narrator who tells him a story, presents a complex compositional procedure which removes the referential character of personal pronouns, making it difficult to identify narrators and characters. This difficulty in identification corresponds to an indifferentiation between temporalities and memories, with which the protagonist is confronted in his quest to remember his own father and, consequently, to affirm himself. The relationship with the father is approached from the point of view of Freudian psychoanalysis, unfolding into a reflection on the relationship with violent and repressive authority, a theme that also applies to the experience of authoritarian governments, as was the case in the Brazilian context in which the author lived. As a result, this work proposes a reflection on the meaning of authority, acquired through wisdom, a characteristic aspect of the traditional narrator, according to Walter Benjamin. Ultimately, it aims to lead to reflection on the place of subjectivity in contemporary times.
Expression of politeness semantics in modern Russian
This paper attempts to describe the semantics of politeness and the totality of means of its implementation in modern Russian. The approach is based on the hypothesis of the existence in the grammatical system of the Russian language of functional and semantic category of politeness, the plan of content of which consists of semantic components of polite communication (respect, benevolence, parity, etc.), and the plan of expression is made up of multi-level (morphological, syntactic, vocabulary, lexical, combinatorial) language means, serving for representation of the specified meaning. In terms of structure, the category under consideration is a field formed by two main microfields: the microfield of courtesy in situations of persuasive character and the microfield of courtesy in situations of non-intrusive character. The paper describes the semantic content of courtesy and the means of expressing it in situations of request, advice, suggestion, apology, comfort, gratitude, greeting. The work will be of interest to specialists-philologists, students, postgraduates, as well as anyone who is interested in the problems of the Russian language.

Translating the Language of Patents
This book is a guide to translating the language of patents in view of avoiding costly translation errors. Errors that might hinder the examination process for granting patents, or that might make patents undefendable in a context of litigation. The 42 sections of this book each identify different provisions of the law for their relevance to translation. These provisions govern language uses, right down to the use of punctuation. Each of the sections present findings, both in terms of the relevant provisions identified, and their specific significance to translation. Exemplified translations focus on French and English, but when there is a consensus across Intellectual property systems, multilingual parallelism is highlighted. Wherever relevant, provisions of specific rules and regulations are presented and exemplified in the three official languages of the European Patent Office (EPO), English, French, and German and three official languages of the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), English, French, and Spanish.Written by an experienced teacher, patent translator, and author of the blog, Patents on the Soles of Your Shoes, this is a rigorously researched, authoritative, and comprehensive guide for all professional translators working on patents, and for students and translators working in legal translation. Accompanying powerpoint slides including information on how to use this book in courses are provided here: Introduction to using Translating the language of Patents PowerPoints (PPT 185KB).
Fuzzy Language in Literature and Translation
Bringing a fuzzy logic-based approach into translation studies and drawing on the theory of information entropy, this book discusses the translation of fuzzy language in literary works and advances a new method of measuring text fuzziness between translation and source text.Based on illustrative examples from the popular novel The Da Vinci Code and its two translated Chinese versions, the study demonstrates the fuzziness measuring method through an algorithmic process. More specifically, information entropy is applied to measure the uncertainty associated with readers' understanding of the original and its corresponding target texts. The underlying hypothesis is that the probability distribution in which readers will understand identified fuzzy discourse is measurable. By further explicating the validity of the hypothesis, it seeks to solve translational "fuzzy" problems in the translation process and offers an alternative, novel approach to the study of "fuzzy" literary texts and their translation. Hopefully, the argument of the book that the intrinsic uncertainty of fuzzy language can be evaluated through Shannon's information entropy will open up a new avenue to the quantitative description of the fuzziness of language and translation. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in translation studies, applied linguistics, and literary criticism.
La fiesta vigilada and Un seguidor de Montaigne mira La Habana
This book is the result of extensive academic research, at master's level, into the "novel" La fiesta vigilada (2007) and the set of essays Un seguidor de Montaigne mira La Habana (1995) by Cuban writer Antonio Jos矇 Ponte. Representations of Havana that are reproduced and multiplied in the pages of these books, in which they are linked to Antonio Jos矇 Ponte's personal memories, but also to the island's recent history, reflecting the transformations that took place in Cuba as a result of the main historical events of the second half of the 20th century, such as the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and the economic crisis of the 1990s.

Censorship and Ideology
This book offers a fascinating picture of how state censorship affected children's literature translation in post-Civil War Spain. Focusing on the Spanish translations of Mark Twain's children's classics The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the author traces the evolution of the censorship system of the Francoist regime and its impact on Spanish children's literature during the years after the Spanish Civil War. Drawing on the regime's censorship laws, official censors' records, and textbooks, she not only examines the censorship imposed on the translations of Twain's works, but also offers insights into the intricate connections between state censorship and the regime's educational aims. The book gives a revealing analysis of the ways in which the highly bureaucratic censorship apparatus operated under Franco's dictatorship, outlining the flaws and fallacies within it, as well as the strategies adopted by publishers and translators to resist the power of the state. While centred on Francoist Spain, the book also explores broader themes of ideology, censorship, and translation, making it a valuable source for scholars of translation studies and Hispanic studies, as well as those with a wider interest in literature, history, and cultural studies.

The Untold Story of Books
From Gutenberg to Amazon, Michael Castleman's The Untold Story of Books is the first and only history of publishing told from a veteran author's point of view. Witty, entertaining, and full of remarkable new insights, it is a deeply researched, fascinating history of the idiosyncratic book business-aimed at authors, aspiring authors, booksellers, industry professionals, and everyone who loves to read books. Organized into three distinct book businesses, all defined by the evolution of printing, The Untold Story of Books explores how each new book business upended its predecessor, forcing authors, publishers, and booksellers to adapt to ever-changing circumstances. It's a story full of surprises: why did books become favored Christmas presents? Because of a poem written in 1823. Why is New York the nation's publishing capital? Because of the Erie Canal. Why are book endorsements called "blurbs"? Because of a satirist's joke in 1907. And why is copyright often an illusion? Because publishing was founded on book piracy, which today is easier and more rampant than ever. Arriving at the present day, Castleman paints a compelling portrait of an evolving book business full of new promise and peril.

Illuminating Fiction contains nineteen interviews with fiction-writing luminaries including Edward P. Jones, Julia Glass, Amy Bloom, Jill McCorkle, Margot Livesy, Ron Carlson and Steve Almond. The interviews contain questions about narrative, voice, character, place, point of view, arc of the story/novel plot, and revision; questions about the writing process; questions about the trajectory of the writer's career; questions about the role and importance of writing courses and mentoring; and also questions that Ellis has drawn from the text of the authors' work. Authors describe the challenges they have faced. The reader is able to gain an intimate and specific understanding of the authors' works, and the authors' thought process as they created their novels and short stories.
The Copy Editor’s (Life)Style Guide
This isn't a book about copy-editing style or mechanics. Surely, there are enough of those on the market. It's about surviving in this line of work, being resilient, managing relationships, and focusing on the things that really matter. Part manual, part memoir, The Copy Editor's (Life)Style Guide explores how to navigate the parts of this career that aren't about grammar, spelling, and punctuation. It provides you with tools to: --Manage tight deadlines, communicate edits, and hand off assignments --Give yourself grace in a world where perfection is impossible --Maintain your joy (and sanity) while striking a work-life balance --Navigate the job hunt and set yourself up for success ...and more. With The Copy Editor's (Life)Style Guide, you'll look beyond editing a document and into how to make changes to your life, all while discovering (or rediscovering) the joy in the profession.
Translation and Objects
Translation and Objectsoffers a new and original perspective in Translation Studies, originating from the conviction that in today's world translation is pervasive. Building on the ideas of scholars who have expanded the boundaries of the discipline, this book focuses on the analysis of objects that migrants carry with them on their journey of migration. The ideas of displacement and constant movement are key throughout these pages. Migrants live translation literally, because displacement is a leitmotif for them. Translation and Objects analyzes migrant objects--such as shoes, stones, or photographs--as translation sites that function as expressions as well as sources of emotions. These displaced emotional objects, laden with meanings and sentiments, tell many stories, saying a great deal about their owners, who almost never have a voice. This book shows how meaning is displaced through the materiality, texture, smells, sensations, and forms of moving objects.Including examples of translations that have been created from a no-nlinguistic perspective and exploring linguistic issues whilst connecting them to other fields such as anthropology and sociology, Vidal sets out a broad vision of translation. This is critical reading for translation theory courses within Translation Studies, comparative literature, and cultural studies. With the exception of Chapter 3, no part of this book may be reprinted or reproduced or utilised in any form or by any electronic, mechanical, or other means, now known or hereafter invented, including photocopying and recording, or in any information storage or retrieval system, without permission in writing from the publishers."

Space, Place, and Bestsellers
From airport bookstores to deckchairs, as audiobooks downloaded by commuters, and on Kindles and other portable devices, twenty-first century bestsellers move in old and new ways. This Element examines the locations and mobilities of the contemporary bestseller as a multi-format commercial object. It employs paratextual, textual, and site-based analysis of the spatiality of bestsellers and considers the centrality of geography to the commercial promise of these books. Space, Place, and Bestsellers provides analysis of the spatial logic of bestseller lists, evidence-rich accounts of the physical and digital retail sites through which bestsellers flow, and new interpretations of how affixing the label 'bestseller' individual authors and titles generates industrial, social, and textual effects. Through its multi-layered analysis, this Element offers a new model for studying the spatiality of popular fiction.
