This book is a comparative and analytical study of the Epistle of Forgiveness by the Arab writer and poet Abu al-'Alaa al-Ma'arri and Paradise Lost by the English poet John Milton. Many Arab writers and critics believe that Milton was influenced by al-Ma'arri. This book presents the correspondences and differences between the two works and refutes the claim that Paradise Lost drew on the Epistle of Forgiveness. Milton and al-Ma'arri have dealt with the idea of an imaginary journey to the other world but the difference is great between the two in form and in substance. The Epistle of Forgiveness was written as an answer to an epistle sent to al-Ma'arri by Ibn al-Qarih. Al-Ma'arri sends Ibn al-Qarih in an imaginary journey to the other world. This journey gives al-Ma'arri the chance to mock Ibn al-Qarih and it also provides him with a perfect opportunity to show his historical, literary, linguistic, theological and philosophical knowledge. On the other hand, Milton's Paradise Lost was the culminating point in his political, religious and literary career and in which he attempted to discuss the Fall of Adam and Eve and to "justify the ways of God to men".

Publishing Scholarly Editions offers new intellectual tools for publishing digital editions that bring readers closer to the experimental practices of literature, editing, and reading. After the Introduction (Section 1), Sections 2 and 3 frame intentionality and data analysis as intersubjective, interrelated, and illustrative of experience-as-experimentation. These ideas are demonstrated in two editorial exhibitions of nineteenth-century works: Herman Melville's Billy Budd, Sailor, and the anti-slavery anthology The Bow in the Cloud, edited by Mary Anne Rawson. Section 4 uses pragmatism to rethink editorial principles and data modelling, arguing for a broader conception of the edition rooted in data collections and multimedia experience. The Conclusion (Section 5) draws attention to the challenges of publishing digital editions, and why digital editions have failed to be supported by the publishing industry. If publications are conceived as pragmatic inventions based on reliable, open-access data collections, then editing can embrace the critical, aesthetic, and experimental affordances of editions of experience.

This edited book contributes to the growing field of self-translation studies by exploring the diversity of roles the practice has in Spanish-speaking contexts of production on both sides of the Atlantic. Part I surveys the presence of self-translation in contemporary Indigenous literatures in Spanish America, with a focus on Mexico and the Mapuche poetry of Chile and Argentina. Part II proposes to incorporate self-translation into the history of Spanish-American literatures- including its relation with colonial multilingual-translation practices, the transfers it allowed between the French and Spanish-American avant-gardes, and the insertion it offered for exiled Republicans in Mexico.
