Book Indexing For AuthorsHow to create a professional nonfiction index in Word

Ingram 出版
2020/07/01 出版

An index could be the thing your book is missing. Take a look in a library or bookstore and you will find few nonfiction books that don't have indexes. That's because publishers know how important the presence of an index is to readers - and therefore how vital it is for sales. Indies often don't realize this - and miss out on potential sales and potential good reviews.A book index is like a guidepost or map for your readers. It tells them what to expect from your book, where to find topics that interest them, and - importantly - what isn't in the book. This means that it reduces the chances of poor reviews and increases the chances of positive reviews. An index helps usability, which makes it more useful to readers. If you are an author thinking of creating your own index, you're in good company. There is quite a precedent for author-indexes (especially in the world of academia, where subjects are so specialist that it's hard to find a professional indexer with relevant experience). This book will guide you through the process and show you how to do it yourself in Microsoft Word. (Sorry, no Mac instructions.)This book is for you if...You need easy-to-understand instructions on how to create your own index for a non-fiction book using Microsoft Word;Your [traditional] publisher is insisting on an index and expecting you to pay for it;You don't have a big budget; You aren't a computer or publishing expert; You don't want to spend weeks (or months) learning how to index. This book is not for you if...You need an in-depth, theory-based book. Many people like the jump-right-in, workbook approach. You are looking for something to help you become a professional indexer, or to win indexing awards. Most professional training courses and organizations often recommend Nancy C. Mulwary's Indexing Books. Also check out the American Society of Indexers (ASI) - www.asindexing.org - and other professional and standards organizations in other countries. You can find courses on indexing in local colleges, as well as online. If you do buy this [print] book, you will have the opportunity of joining the forthcoming online course based on it - free of charge. You will be able to ask questions, receive help, and see in real-time what the creation of an index involves.

Resum矇s for Freelancers

Sheila,Buff  著
Ingram 出版
2020/07/01 出版

This booklet describes the difference between the content and style of a traditional resum矇 and the functional resum矇, which the authors recommend for freelancers seeking work. A skills-based resum矇 is a more effective strategy for freelance editorial professionals because potential clients can identify at a glance whether the freelancer has the skills required for the job.For serious freelancers committed to self-employment in the communications and publishing industries, the traditional resum矇 is fundamentally flawed. It doesn't accommodate the variety of projects an experienced editorial professional may have worked on as a freelancer. If their last full-time job was years ago, the reverse chronological approach makes it look like they've been unemployed since then. More importantly, a traditional resum矇 doesn't tell a potential client whether the freelancer can do the job.Managing editors looking for proofreaders, for instance, don't really care about previous job titles or where an applicant went to college. They want to know that they'll do a good, fast, accurate job on schedule and on budget-in other words, that they'll be a reliable professional. One of the best ways to present oneself as a freelance editorial professional worth hiring is with a functional resum矇. This type of resum矇 focuses on a freelancer's skills, abilities, and accomplishments, though it may mention previous job experience and educational attainments. For a self-employed editorial professional who wants to get freelance work, a functional resum矇 extracts valuable skills hidden in the traditional resum矇 and highlights them to emphasize writing and editorial skills for specific clients. To create a solid functional resum矇, rethink the old chronological resum矇. Look at the skills used in all prior jobs, including those outside publishing. Skills developed through volunteer work also count. The authors have provided four sets of before/after resum矇s to assist the reader's understanding of the differences between the two and to envision how the functional resum矇 might work for them as they pursue self-employment or work on marketing their small business. In addition to explaining the benefits of the functional resum矇, this booklet discusses elements of resum矇 design that take into account artificial intelligence screening as well as human foibles that might affect a job offer. The authors also describe ways to supplement your resum矇, leverage LinkedIn effectively, target your job search, build your network, and protect yourself against scammers.

Language and Logic in Ancient China

Chad,Hansen  著
Ingram 出版
2020/07/01 出版

Guided by 20th century theories of language, Hansen's novel approach to interpretive theory launched the modern analytical study of Ancient Chinese philosophy. This 1983 publication challenged authority-based traditional "religious" accounts stemming from 18th and 19th century missionary dictionaries and reliance on interpretive authority."Hansen shows that one tiny grammatical question... has profound implications for the understanding of Chinese philosophy. ...This is surely a decisive breakthrough ... a great success. His observations about Chinese thought in general are always stimulating and illuminating. A book which excites one to rethink things from the foundations." A. C. Graham"An ambitious and provocative book concerning the relationship between language and thought in ancient China. ... a novel and powerful theory about the nature of classical Chinese language ... a better understanding of many issues in classical Chinese philosophy." P. J. Ivanhoe"[The] importance of this book lies ... in its engaging style, novel ideas, and rigorous argumentation, which can serve as a model for future work in Chinese philosophy. Hansen takes Chinese philosophy seriously as philosophy. For anyone tired of the superficial summaries or scholastic commentaries that so often characterize this field, Hansen's book will be a memorable and welcome change." Michael Martin

Positioning and Stance in Political Discourse

Ingram 出版
2020/06/01 出版

Within the political sphere, a political actor is often judged by what he or she says, with their verbal performance often perceived as representative of the individual. Hearers accept that, as individuals, they possess a lifetime of experiences and actions which inform, but may also undermine, their aspirations in gaining political capital. Additionally, as representatives of a political party and its ideology, these actors do not exist in isolation; they are members and, at times, potential candidates of a particular party with its own agenda which may, in turn, cause them to modify their personal speech to align with espoused policies of the party. The various contributions contained in this volume examine the discourse of political actors through the lenses of positionality and stance. Throughout its chapters, clearly defined theoretical perspectives and specified social practices are employed, enabling the authors to elucidate how political actors can situate themselves, their party, and their opponents toward their ostensive public. This book successfully demonstrates how espoused perspectives relate to, or reflect on, the nature of the individual political actor and their truth, the party they represent and its ideology, and the pandering to popular public opinion to gain support and co-operation. This book will hold particular appeal for postgraduate students, researchers, and scholars of discourse studies, pragmatics, political science, as well as other areas in humanities and the social sciences.

The Invention of Rare Books

Ingram 出版
2020/06/01 出版

When does a book that is merely old become a rarity and an object of desire? David McKitterick examines, for the first time, the development of the idea of rare books, and why they matter. Studying examples from across Europe, he explores how this idea took shape in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and how collectors, the book trade and libraries gradually came together to identify canons that often remain the same today. In a world that many people found to be over-supplied with books, the invention of rare books was a process of selection. As books are one of the principal means of memory, this process also created particular kinds of remembering. Taking a European perspective, McKitterick looks at these interests as they developed from being matters of largely private concern and curiosity, to the larger public and national responsibilities of the first half of the nineteenth century.

Story Like a Journalist

Amber,Royer  著
Ingram 出版
2020/06/01 出版

Want to write novels that feel real enough to the reader to have been ripped from the headlines, whatever your genre? Think like a journalist. Looking at the questions journalists ask can help you think of the characters and events in your story as real people, whose lives you are recording, just like you were writing memoir or a news article. Approach planning your novel the way a journalist plans out writing a news piece. They figure out what they will need to research for the piece, and decide how they will structure that research into a narrative. They decide on a format for the story's lede (opening designed to draw the reader in) and structure the story to follow up on the questions presented in that lede. They document everything, so that they can verify the accuracy of everything they present. You can do the same for your fiction. This workbook serves as a full self-paced writing course, presenting theory on each aspect of the world/characters you are trying to create - and then offering step-by-step worksheets that allow you to apply what you just learned. The instructional material is designed to give you a basic foundation in creative writing craft so that you understand how to build an effective story using the information you add into the worksheets. Working through the entire collected workbook will give you a comprehensive Story Bible detailing aspects of your plot and characters to give you a reference source for your world - and the expertise on how to use it. The Master Collection gives you access to all five Story Like a Journalist volumes, for a total of over 100 worksheets. Get ready to take a deep dive into your story, its characters and its world. The journalistic planning strategies in the book take you from determining the best protagonist for your story to imbuing your work with meaning. The book walks you through each of these processes: Who? = Character - WHO are these people who've showed up demanding a place in your novel, anyway? You know they have a story to tell, and for some specific reason, you are the writer in the best position to tell it. Approach uncovering character the same way a journalist approaches a profile piece. What? = Premise -- WHAT is this story about? Premise define the heart of your story. You need a keystone to hold onto, so you don't get lost in all the things your story COULD be. Premise is your keystone, and it works like the legend for a road map. Approach refining premise the same way a journalist approaches a news story. When? and Where? = Setting - WHEN and WHERE the heck are your characters? They have to be somewhere, waiting for the story to start. And that place shouldn't be random. Setting makes the story specific, and allows readers to feel like your characters are real people, living real lives in a certain time and place. Approach exploring aspects of your setting the same way a journalist approaches making a documentary. How? and Why? = Plot and Theme - A plot that doesn't build to a theme is hollow, no matter how much excitement you build into the on-page action, there's no substance so the story won't be memorable. A character contemplating a theme without the framework of a plot is drifting, no matter how much she has to say, there's nothing concrete to prove her points or to challenge them. Her ideas just slip away. But when you get HOW and WHY working together, you can build a pattern of events and meaning that will touch our emotions and maybe even change the way we think.

Philosophy’s TreasonStudies in Philosophy and Translation

Spitzer,D M  著
Ingram 出版
2020/05/01 出版

Philosophy's Treason: Studies in Philosophy and Translation gathers contributions from an international group of scholars at different stages of their careers, bringing together diverse perspectives on translation and philosophy. The volume's six chapters primarily look towards translation from philosophic perspectives, often taking up issues central to Translation Studies and pursuing them along philosophic lines. By way of historical, logical, and personal reflection, several chapters address broad topics of translation, such as the entanglements of culture, ideology, politics, and history in the translation of philosophic works, the position of Translation Studies within current academic humanities, untranslatability within philosophic texts, and the ways philosophic reflection can enrich thinking on translation. Two more narrowly focused chapters work closely on specific philosophers and their texts to identify important implications for translation in philosophy. In a final "critical postscript" the volume takes a reflexive turn as its own chapters provide starting points for thinking about philosophy and translation in terms of periperformativity. From philosophers critically engaged with translation this volume offers distinct perspectives on a growing field of research on the interdisciplinarity and relationality of Translation Studies and Philosophy. Ranging from historical reflections on the overlap of translation and philosophy to philosophic investigation of questions central to translation to close-readings of translation within important philosophic texts, Philosophy's Treason serves as a useful guide and model to educators in Translation Studies wishing to illustrate a variety of approaches to topics related to philosophy and translation.

English Translations of Shuihu ZhuanA Narratological Perspective

Yunhong,Wang  著
Springer 出版
2020/05/01 出版

This book offers a novel perspective on the intersection of translation and narration in literary translation by investigating how three translations of Shuihu Zhuan present the original narrative mode to the target readership in terms of four narrative elements--voice, commentary, point of view and motif--in different periods of history. It not only validates but also quantifies the differences in strategy-making patterns between translators, as well as between different narratological categories. The established theoretical frameworks (including a narrative-descriptive model and a sociological explanatory framework) and the data collected may provide methodological and empirical support for further studies on shifts of narrative features in translation. The tendencies manifested by different translators and identified by the study may also shed new light on the teaching and learning of translation skills. The book offers a valuable reference guide for scholars, practitioners, translators and graduate students in the fields of e.g. language, translation, literature and cultural studies, and for anyone with an interest in Chinese classical literature, Chinese-English translation, narrative studies or cross-cultural studies.

Fit-For-Market Translator and Interpreter Training in a Digital Age

Ingram 出版
2020/05/01 出版

Training institutions offering specialized translation and interpreting programs need to keep up with the rapid development of digitalization and the increasingly sophisticated requirements of the language industry. This book addresses digital trends and employability in the market from the aspect of training: how have the latest digital trends shaped the language industry, and what competencies will translators, interpreters and T/I trainers need so as to meet current market requirements? Four major subjects of high relevance are discussed in 12 chapters: (1) collaborative partnership in the field of fit-for-market practices with a focus on e-learning materials; (2) competence development in translator and interpreter training; (3) the implications of neural machine translation and the increasing significance of post-editing practices, as well as (4) the role of new technologies and new methods in the work and training of interpreters and translators. With an introduction written by Juanjo Arevalillo, managing director of Hermes Traducciones and former vice-president of the European Union of Associations of Translation Companies, the book creates a fresh momentum for researchers, academics, professionals and trainees to be engaged in a constructive dialogue.

The purpose of The First 100 Words is to share one editorial staff's insights into that narrow literary domain, to chart the pitfalls and headlong plunges that inspire frontline readers to reject manuscripts, often without bothering to finish them.

Bad Advice

Ingram 出版
2020/05/01 出版

In Britain the monarch is never wrong. Whenever the sovereign drops a brick in public, a functionary turns up at Buckingham Palace to explain that Her/His Majesty "was badly advised."In the same way, many of the things that you are getting wrong in writing are not your fault: you have been badly advised. You have been taught superstitions about English that have no foundation in the language. You have been hobbled with oversimplifications. You have been subjected to bizarre diktats from supposed authorities.Much of it was well-intentioned. Grammarians of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries lacking an established English grammar had to invent one. They turned to Latin, which had prestige and an established grammar they had been taught in schools, and they tried to adapt English to it. But Latin is a very different kind of language, and it was a bad fit.Others have sought to tidy up the language by inventing and enforcing distinctions and prohibitions, seldom helpfully. (Look at the over/more than entry.)We have wound up with what the linguist Arnold Zwicky has termed "zombie rules" absurd rules that have no foundation in the language and which have been repeatedly exploded by linguists and better-informed grammarians, but which roam classrooms and editorial offices like the undead. As Henry Hitchings summed the situation up in The Language Wars, "The history of prescriptions about English ... is in part a history of bogus rules, superstitions, half-baked logic, groaningly unhelpful lists, baffling abstract statements, false classifications, contemptuous insiderism and educational malfeasance."Likewise, advice on writing in general is marred by oversimplifications, half-heard advice, and idiosyncratic preferences--sometimes bizarre--passed off as professionalism.Your teachers, editors, mentors, and supervisors have a lot to answer for.And you have much to unlearn. Look inside and see.I have kept the advice succinct. If you need further explanation on any point, look me up. If you want to argue with me, you can try.

London and the Modernist Bookshop

Ingram 出版
2020/05/01 出版

The modernist bookshop, best exemplified by Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare & Co. and Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop, has received scant attention outside these more prominent examples. This writing will review how bookshops like David Archer's on Parton Street (London) in the 1930s were sites of distribution, publication, and networking. Parton Street, which also housed Lawrence & Wishart publishers and a briefly vibrant literary scene, will be approached from several contexts as a way of situating the modernist bookshop within both the book trade and the literary communities which it interacted with and made possible.

The Art of Talking

Ingram 出版
2020/04/26 出版

The Art of Talking is a guide to public speaking and a tool to improve anybody's skills in communication. A great talk is not just a talk about a great idea. A great talk is an experience of a lifetime for the audience, but above all, for the speaker. Most of the speakers, even the professional ones, despise the process of preparation. They are busy people, successful people, who don't have time to spare, so they don't want to waist their precious time going through a coaching and preparation process in order to deliver a better talk for an audience they actually don't care so much about. In The Art of Talking, Norberto Jansenson, TEDx speaker and coach for TEDx speakers, and professional and famous storytelling magician, writer, coach, speaker, artistic and creative director and consultant for some of the biggest companies in the world, shares 30 years of experience related to talking to reach, to make a difference, to transform. Transform the lives of the members of any audience, but above all, transform the lifes of the speakers he has worked with. Words are very powerful, and they can create, and destroy, worlds. Words can be magical, and when they are, they can transform lives. Every human being is a real magician, whose powers have been long forgotten. This book shows a door that leads to a new world (which is actually an ancient world), where magic words were used to produce miracles. Avra Kedavra, the most powerful magic word, comes from Aramaic, one of the oldest semitic languages, and means "I create, as I speak". We all talk, all the time, mostly without having any idea nor paying much attention to what we say, and to what our words produce out there. This book provides tools to change all that. To take responsibility for the power we have, to care, and to learn to communicate much better, not only from the stage, but in any field, in any situation, with all of our professional and personal acquaintances. So be it.

Frances Burney and Her Readers. the Negotiated Image.

Ingram 出版
2020/04/11 出版

Was it possible for an eighteenth-century woman to become a celebrity and remain respectable? Could women's commercial success in literature be reconciled with contemporary ideals of prescribed feminine domesticity? The rugged trajectory marked by the critical reception of the works by Frances Burney (1752-1840), an English novelist, diarist and playwright, reveals the dilemmas she faced at different stages of her career from a debutante to an acclaimed literary figure. Burney's long life is set against the background of changing conventions in culture consumption and appreciation, and the book highlights the successes and failures of the techniques which the author employed in her texts for projecting a favourable image of herself as a woman and writer.
