The European Book in the Twelfth Century
The 'long twelfth century' (1075-1225) was an era of seminal importance in the development of the book in medieval Europe and marked a high point in its construction and decoration. This comprehensive study takes the cultural changes that occurred during the 'twelfth-century Renaissance' as its point of departure to provide an overview of manuscript culture encompassing the whole of Western Europe. Writing in Small Groups the 4color Way lays out how to build a Cooperative Inquiry group to create a super support group of writers. Conceived by pioneers in the field of participatory research, Cooperative Inquiry is a system whereby people interested in learning about a topic get together and form a question about the topic. Then they come up with a practical plan for each participant to go out and "test" the question by their actions. After the individual actions are complete, they meet back up, and each person presents what s/he did and what s/he learned. Then the group makes meaning from their combined experiences. These meanings are used as a basis for planning another action cycle, continuing in this recursive way for as long as the group chooses. The individual writer is always balancing what is going on inside the self and what is going on outside the self. In this book, Cooperative Inquiry is combined with other approaches such as the unique 4color reflection process, shaped to fit the needs of writers, based on the author's doctoral research project and in her teaching writing at a California Community College.
Cognitive research phraseology
There is still no clear boundary between free phrases and phraseological units. There are countless intermediate cases between the extremes of full motivation and the variety of word components and the lack of motivation combined with the full stability of lexical components and grammatical structure. This paper offers a cognitive perspective on considering the phraseomatic meaning. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the conceptual organization of phraseomatic meaning on the example of English verb-name phraseomatic word combinations. In turn, the identification of the conceptual organization is a stage in determining the functional and cognitive potential of the language units under consideration. According to onomasiological interpretation of the definitions of phraseomatic word combinations, verb units identify the concept, and other words and labels identify the features of this concept. The analysis carried out in this monograph shows that the three types of conceptual features participate differently in forming the structure of English verb-name phraseomatic word combinations.

The Renaissance Reform of the Book and Britain
What has fifteenth-century England to do with the Renaissance? By challenging accepted notions of 'medieval' and 'early modern' David Rundle proposes a new understanding of English engagement with the Renaissance. He does so by focussing on one central element of the humanist agenda - the reform of the script and of the book more generally - to demonstrate a tradition of engagement from the 1430s into the early sixteenth century. Introducing a cast-list of scribes and collectors who are not only English and Italian but also Scottish, Dutch and German, this study sheds light on the cosmopolitanism central to the success of the humanist agenda. Questioning accepted narratives of the slow spread of the Renaissance from Italy to other parts of Europe, Rundle suggests new possibilities for the fields of manuscript studies and the study of Renaissance humanism.

Reading Computer-Generated Texts
Natural language generation (NLG) is the process wherein computers produce output in readable human languages. Such output takes many forms, including news articles, sports reports, prose fiction, and poetry. These computer-generated texts are often indistinguishable from human-written texts, and they are increasingly prevalent. NLG is here, and it is everywhere. However, readers are often unaware that what they are reading has been computer-generated. This Element considers how NLG conforms to and confronts traditional understandings of authorship and what it means to be a reader. It argues that conventional conceptions of authorship, as well as of reader responsibility, change in instances of NLG. What is the social value of a computer-generated text? What does NLG mean for modern writing, publishing, and reading practices? Can an NLG system be considered an author? This Element explores such question, while presenting a theoretical basis for future studies.

Aboriginal Writers and Popular Fiction
Wiradjuri woman, Anita Heiss, is arguably one of the first Aboriginal Australian authors of popular fiction. A focus on the political characterises her chick lit; and her identity as an author is both supplemented and complemented by her roles as an academic, activist and public intellectual. Heiss has discussed genre as a means of targeting audiences that may be less engaged with Indigenous affairs, and positions her novels as educative but not didactic. Her readership is constituted by committed readers of romance and chick lit as well as politically engaged readers that are attracted to Heiss' dual authorial persona; and, both groups bring radically distinct expectations to bear on these texts. Through analysis of online reviews and surveys conducted with users of the book reviewing website Goodreads, I complicate the understanding of genre as a cogent interpretative frame, and deploy this discussion to explore the social significance of Heiss' literature.
Scribal Habits in Near Eastern Manuscript Traditions
Most scholars who employ manuscripts in their research tend to focus on the literary content itself. But what about the role of the scribe who typically remains at the periphery of research? How can we, in the words of the NT textual critic James Royse, "virtually look over the scribe's shoulder" to understand the process by which our manuscripts were produced? Moreover, manuscripts often contain far more material than the words that form their primary texts: dots and various other symbols that mark vowels (in the case of Semitic languages), intonation, readings aids, and other textual markers; marginal notes and sigla that provide additional explanatory content akin to but substantially different from our modern notes and endnotes; images and illustrations that present additional material not found in the main text. These extratextual (or peritextual) elements add additional layers to the main body of the text and are crucial for our understanding of the text's transmission history as well as scribal habits. This volume brings together contributions by scholars focussing on such extra-, peritextual elements as found in Middle Eastern manuscripts written in Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic, Persian and other languages, to study the individuals who produced our manuscripts and how they shaped the transmission of literary texts they copied.

Smell, Memory, and Literature in the Black Country

The Hub City Writers Project
This full color book details fifty iconic stories in the twenty-five year history of the Hub City Writers Project, founded in 1995 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Each includes a double page illustrated spread. The book features short essays by local and regional writers about moments like the Lawson's Fork Festival in 2000, the Out Loud campaign against academic censorship, all the way to the introduction of our signature event, Delicious Reads. This book celebrates the first twenty-five years and details how the Hub City Writers Project grew from an idea hatched in a downtown coffee shop among three local writers to now being one of the South's most robust literary organizations.
A Bibliography for After Jews and Arabs
Ammiel Alcalay's groundbreaking work, After Jews and Arabs, published in 1993, redrew the geographic, political, cultural, and emotional map of relations between Jews and Arabs in the Levantine/Mediterranean world over a thousand-year period. Based on over a decade of research and fieldwork in many disciplines-including history and historiography; anthropology, ethnography, and ethnomusicology; political economy and geography; linguistics; philosophy; and the history of science and technology-the book presented a radically different perspective than that presented by received opinion.Given the radical and iconoclastic nature of Alcalay's perspective, After Jews and Arabs met great resistance in attempts to publish it. Though completed and already circulating in 1989, it didn't appear until 1993. In addition, when the book was published, there wasn't enough space to include its original bibliography, a foundational part of the project.A Bibliography for After Jews and Arabs presents the original bibliography, as completed in 1992, without changes, as a glimpse into the historical record of a unique scholarly, political, poetic, and cultural journey. The bibliography itself had roots in research begun in the late 1970s and demonstrates a very wide arc.In addition to the bibliography, we include three accompanying texts here. In "Behind the Scenes: Before After Jews and Arabs, " Alcalay takes us behind the closed doors of the academic process, reprinting the original reader reports and his detailed rebuttals, and in "A Bibliography for After Jews and Arabs A Brief Introduction," Alcalay contextualizes his own path to the work he undertook, in methodological, historical, and political terms. A 10th-anniversary edition of from the warring factions, a book-length poem dedicated to Srebrenica, and a book of essays, a little history, came out in 2013. a little history also came out in a Portuguese translation with Editor Lumme, S瓊o Paolo in 2019. During the wars in ex-Yugoslavia, he was the primary translator of texts from Bosnia, and translations include Sarajevo Blues and Nine Alexandrias by poet Semezdin Mehmedinovic, as well as works by journalist Zlatko Dizdarevic, and many others. Alcalay is the General Editor of Lost & Found: The CUNY Poetics Document Initiative, a series of student and guest-edited archival texts emerging from New American Poetry, and he was the recipient of a 2017 Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award for this work.
Mapping Tokyo in Fiction and Film
Mapping Tokyo in Fiction and Film explores ways that late 20th- and early 21st- century fiction and film from Japan literally and figuratively map Tokyo. The four dozen novels, stories, and films discussed here describe, define, and reflect on Tokyo urban space. They are part of the flow of Japanese-language texts being translated (or, in the case of film, subtitled) into English. Circulation in professionally translated and subtitled English-language versions helps ensure accessibility to the primarily anglophone readers of this study--and helps validate inclusion in lists of world literature and film. Tokyo's well-established culture of mapping signifies much more than a profound attachment to place or an affinity for maps as artifacts. It is, importantly, a counter-response to feelings of insecurity and disconnection--insofar as the mapping process helps impart a sense of predictability, stability, and placeness in the realand imagined city.
Observations
Observations on the Passing Scene was a popular newspaper column by Thomas Sowell that I read almost daily. The late Andy Rooney was also a favorite of mine. (See the appendix for some of their quotes and others). Some observations contained here came from family and friends. Most have come from experiences and memories by the author of this book collected over the past sixty some-odd years. Many reach back in time as far as antiquity, but most written about things that have happened in the last few decades. The observations take many forms and articles included extracted from my books published over the past several years. Other missives here written, in various forms and venues, as recently as a few days before this book published. This book is a sequel to "A Little Out There" published a few years ago although with a slightly less humorous tone. The purpose is not to preach, but instead to give you something to think about and ultimately decide what your own observational truths are. Perhaps this might also encourage you to record some of your own observations to ponder or pass on.
The Network Turn
We live in a networked world. Online social networking platforms and the World Wide Web have changed how society thinks about connectivity. Because of the technological nature of such networks, their study has predominantly taken place within the domains of computer science and related scientific fields. But arts and humanities scholars are increasingly using the same kinds of visual and quantitative analysis to shed light on aspects of culture and society hitherto concealed. This Element contends that networks are a category of study that cuts across traditional academic barriers, uniting diverse disciplines through a shared understanding of complexity in our world. Moreover, we are at a moment in time when it is crucial that arts and humanities scholars join the critique of how large-scale network data and advanced network analysis are being harnessed for the purposes of power, surveillance, and commercial gain. African Literature and the CIA
During the period of decolonisation in Africa, the CIA covertly subsidised a number of African authors, editors and publishers as part of its anti-communist propaganda strategy. Managed by two front organisations, the Congress of Cultural Freedom and the Farfield Foundation, its Africa programme stretched across the continent. This Element unravels the hidden networks and associations underpinning African literary publishing in the 1960s; it evaluates the success of the CIA in secretly infiltrating and influencing African literary magazines and publishing firms, and examines the extent to which new circuits of cultural and literary power emerged. Based on new archival evidence relating to the Transcription Centre, The Classic and The New African, it includes case studies of Wole Soyinka, Nat Nakasa and Bessie Head, which assess how the authors' careers were affected by these transnational networks and also reveal how they challenged, subverted, and resisted external influence and control.
