Effects of Plant Extracts on Human Health
Plant extracts exhibit a variety of bioactive compounds (polyphenols, carotenoids, fibers, essential oils, polysaccharides, alkaloids, and proteins). The majority have biological effects, but their mechanisms of action are still unknown. In fact, the variability of compounds in crude extract of plants poses a challenge to fish, and exhibit activity for selected cellular targets for specific diseases of interest. This Special Issue focuses on medicinal plants and explores the potential effect of extracts and/or its compounds sourced from medicinal plants in specific experimental models of diseases. This SI summarizes the updated data related to plant extracts, and in some cases, highlighted major compounds characterized from a specific extract/plant in different disease models, including in cell-line prostate cancer and C57BL/6 mouse prostate, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory diseases, hyperuricemia, hearing loss, influenza A, thrombose, and diabetes. Diabetes is one of the most challenging health problems in the 21st century, projected to affect 700 million people by 2045. In the last 15 years, the number of people diagnosed with type 1 diabetes increased by 45%, and those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes increased by 95%. The most devastating effects of diabetes are its chronic complications, which confer a high risk of morbidity and mortality and an increased health system cost burden. Although there is increased awareness and new therapeutic options in the treatment of diabetes, it is still the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults, the leading cause of kidney failure and dialysis, and the leading cause of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations.This Special Issue, featuring thirteen research articles, three reviews, and one systematic review, presents the latest knowledge of diabetes and its complications. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are characterized by chronic inflammation of the GIT, with two main clinical manifestations: Crohn's disease, whose pathogenesis involves any part of the gastrointestinal tract, and ulcerative colitis, in which inflammation is limited to the colon. This gastrointestinal tract inflammation leads to symptoms such as bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, malnutrition, and increased intestinal permeability. Among the factors involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases, genetics, dysregulation in the intestinal microbiota, and environmental factors such as diet and physical inactivity stand out. Considering the severity of symptoms related to IBDs, alternative therapies have been sought to alleviate intestinal discomfort, and physical exercise, dietary interventions, and nutritional supplements can bring benefits, which include improving the composition of the microbiota, intestinal tract, and its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action, which may implement a protective action on the permeability in the gastrointestinal tract. Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms in Immune Regulation
This is a Reprint of the first edition of the Special Issue on "Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms in Immune Regulation" published by the journal Cells in 2024-2025. The reprint starts with a review of the latest advances in molecular mechanisms of immunity and the effect of X chromosome loss in immune function. Next, we focus on autoimmunity by exploring the use of circular RNAs as biomarkers in multiple sclerosis and the role of circulating T cell subsets in Type 1 diabetes. We conclude reviewing the part played by lipid biosynthesis metabolism in the inflammatory response mediated by microglia in neurodegeneration and wound healing in the central nervous system. The importance of Immune regulation for preventive medicine is highlighted by a review on the interactions of T follicular helper cells and B cells and their role in the control of viral infections and vaccine design. Next, we explore how immune cell populations affect the prognosis of cancer patients treated by Immunotherapy using immune check point inhibitors. We conclude this part with an emphasis on tissue resident memory T cells (TRMs) and their potential in the control of cancer metastasis. The Special Issue concludes with articles highlighting the interactions between the environment and the immune system, specifically on the generation of tolerogenic dendritic cells mediated by oxygen tension in tissues and exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) on the skin. Thus, this reprint provides a glimpse of the multi-cellular immunoregulatory networks implicated in autoimmune diseases, infection and cancer as well as during normal interactions with the environment.
Disease Control Priorities, Fourth Edition (Volume 2)
The fourth edition of Disease Control Priorities (DCP) builds on the three previous editions published from 1993 through 2018. DCP4 uses a collaborative, country-led approach to summarize, produce, and help translate economic evidence to inform better priority setting and capacity strengthening for universal health coverage, public health functions, pandemic preparedness and response, and intersectoral and international action for health. New modeling for DCP4 suggests more than a 20 percent probability in the next decade of another pandemic with mortality comparable to COVID-19. Volume 2, Investing in Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response, provides practical guidance for countries to prevent, prepare for, and respond to pandemics. Drawing on COVID-19 lessons, it identifies key priorities to build resilient systems that protect lives and economies through evidence-based national and regional actions. Early chapters focus on prevention-- reducing zoonotic risks, strengthening biosafety measures, improving early detection systems, and rapidly characterizing and containing outbreaks. Other chapters discuss targeted public health measures and broader public health and social measures to curb transmission. Core health system investments receive particular attention, especially oxygen systems, emergency care, and vaccine delivery infrastructure that serve both routine and pandemic needs. Later chapters address medical countermeasures, proposing prearranged financing and decentralized manufacturing to accelerate deployment and reduce disparities. Finally, the volume presents a comprehensive framework for pandemic financing that spans the entire pandemic cycle, emphasizing the need for timely, adequate, and effective financial resources. Methylene Blue
Methylene Blue (MB) is a blue dye first developed by a German scientist, Heinrich Cato in 1876. Originally used as a textile dye but later found to have medicinal properties. This book discusses the use of MB in clinical medicine. The book also looks at the historical uses of methylene blue, such as in the treatment of malaria.As a dye, it can be used in surgery to highlight structures, such as fistulae. In pathology, it can be used as a tissue stain. In emergency medicine it can be used to treat methaemoglobinaemia, carbon monoxide poisoning as well as vasoplegic shock. In clinical medicine, MB can be used in a variety of conditions as it has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and anticancer properties. MB enhances the activity of the mitochondria and can be used to increase energy. MB can cross the Blood Brain Barrier and has been found to reduce neuroinflammation and can be used in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and a host of other degenerative diseases. Although much of the research has been done in animal models, due to the safety, it can be translated to human use.One great myth is that methylene blue is dangerous. To some extent this is true, however, this can also apply to any drug, vitamin, mineral and herb. Dosage is the key issue. Another key issue is that it is contra-indicated in certain people. Therefore, it is up to the prescribing doctor to determine the correct dose in people who can use it safely Hopefully this book will encourage everyone to look more closely at MB and use it to treat conditions that up till now have no specific treatment.

Quality of Life After Surgically Treated Ankle Fractures
The general objective of this thesis was to evaluate and compare the functionality, pain and quality of life (QOL) of active and inactive adult individuals whose ankle fracture (AF) was surgically treated; and the specific objectives were: i) To conduct a systematic review evaluating functional outcomes and the QOL of patients with surgically treated AF compared with the nonfractured population; ii) To compare adult men and women residing in Brazil's interior who were treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) following AF; and iii) To describe and prospectively analyze unstable AF, surgically treated through ORIF, in adults in the Jequitinhonha Valley region of Brazil. Questionnaires such as the IPAQ, MMSE, SF-36, VAS, and sociodemographic and clinical questionnaires were administered. The morphology of the AFs was analyzed according to the AO Foundation and Orthopaedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) classification system. Many drugs have been used in the treatment of peptic ulcer but each of them associated with different side effect so trends today toward use of herbal medicine which was associated with adverse effect. Ginger hydroalcoholic extract contain different consistent with anti-ulcer properties like 6-Gingersulfonic acid and three monoacyldigalactosyl glycerol including ginger glycolipid A. B. C .The mechanism of ginger extract may be due to counteracting the active oxidant radicals, decreasing mucosal cell shedding and thicking the mucus membrane so ginger extract has antiulcer properties when used in accurate dose and accurate duration. He wanted to know if I would be willing to write a book on neurotoxicity that would be suitable for industrial hygienists, safety professionals, occupational health personnel, and others interested in neurotoxicity, including psychologists, neuropsychologists, physicians, risk analyzers, and government regulators.
