Race And Medicine in Nineteenth-and Early-Twentieth-Century America
An examination of the medical experiences of African Americans During the days of slavery in America, racism and often-faulty medical theories contributed to an atmosphere in which African Americans were seen as chattel: some white physicians claimed that African Americans had physiological and anatomical differences that made them well suited for slavery. These attitudes continued into the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras. In Race and Medicine historian Todd Savitt presents revised and updated versions of his seminal essays on the medical history of African Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, especially in the South. This collection examines a variety of aspects of African American medical history, including health and illnesses, medical experimentation, early medical schools and medical professionals, and slave life insurance. Savitt examines the history of sickle-cell anemia and identifies the first two patients with the disease noted in medical literature. He proposes an explanation of why the disease was not well known in the general African American population for at least 50 years after its discovery. He also explains why African Americans developed elephantiasis in the Charleston Low Country and not elsewhere in the country. Other topics Savitt explores include African American medical schools, the formation of an African American medical profession, and SIDS among Virginia slaves. With its new research data and interpretations of existing materials, Race and Medicine will be a valuable resource to those interested in the history of medicine and African American history as well as to the medical community.
Targeted Diagnosis and Treatment of Shoulder and Elbow Disease
The shoulder is a complex system of functionally interconnected and coordinated joints. Together with the elbow joint and the hand, it guides and stabilizes the reaching movement of the upper limb. The functional role of the shoulder and elbow is twofold: to provide stability to the joint complex and to allow for a wide range of motion in the shoulder girdle; and, through the elbow joint, to allow for quick and precise movements. These qualities -stability, freedom of movement, and speed-are impacted if any of the numerous anatomical components are damaged by trauma, inflammation, or the peripheral or central nervous system. Rotator cuff injuries, whether traumatic or due to functional overload; arthrosis; and heterotopic ossification are the most common pathologies of the shoulder complex, while specific tendinopathies, with or without heterotopic ossification, are conditions that specifically affect the elbow. From these premises, the idea of promoting a Special Issue dedicated to "Diagnosis and Treatment of Shoulder and Elbow Disease" was born, which led to interesting reflections in light of the new diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitative treatment proposals on this topic. The authors and the different scientific works included address the issue of patient care in shoulder and elbow complex diseases, both in terms of diagnosis, surgical and rehabilitative treatment, and also in light of the new opportunities offered by artificial intelligence.
Beyond Borders
This Special Issue, entitled "Beyond Borders-Tackling Neglected Tropical Viral Diseases", presents recent advances in the surveillance, diagnosis, epidemiology, and clinical understanding of arboviral neglected tropical diseases. The eight contributions highlight the expanding global impact of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and other emerging pathogens, emphasizing how climate change, urbanization, and global mobility reshape their transmission. Together, these studies offer a concise overview of current challenges and innovative approaches that aim to strengthen preparedness and response capacities worldwide.
The Health Effects of Daily Physical Activity Behaviours in Children
Physical activity has multiple benefits for health, as well as for cognitive and motor development in children and adolescents, and the latest research and scientific studies reflect the evolution of the field and the growing interest in this area. Nevertheless, there continues to be a need to keep researching this topic. Through this reprint, we aim to disseminate quality research related to the effects of physical activity on physical and psychological outcomes in children and adolescents. The goal of this reprint is to deepen and expand the understanding of how physical activity relates to physical and psychological development in children.
Advances in Regional Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Management
Regional anaesthesia (RA) and acute pain medicine have advanced markedly over recent decades, reshaping modern patient care. Ultrasound-guided RA has become the standard of practice, offering improved efficacy, safety, and ease of performance and driving wider clinical adoption. Its integration with acute pain management strategies has significantly enhanced patient outcomes, reducing opioid requirements and supporting faster recovery. Despite this progress, the field continues to evolve. Novel nerve blocks and contemporary pain management approaches require ongoing evaluation and refinement. This Special Issue aims to present current evidence, address key themes, and explore future directions in RA and acute pain medicine. The journal and the Guest Editor invite readers to engage with the impactful contributions featured in this collection.
Human Performance and Health in Sport and Exercise
This Reprint synthesizes current research examining the relationship between human performance and health in sport and exercise. The collected articles show how participation in physically demanding sports contributes to measurable adaptations in cardiovascular, metabolic, neuromuscular and psychological domains across a wide range of populations. At the same time, the evidence demonstrates that competitive environments impose considerable physiological load and psychological strain, underscoring the need for structured monitoring, adequate recovery and long-term health management. The studies included adopt a multidimensional analytical framework, integrating physiological indicators, biomechanical parameters, anthropometric characteristics, psychomotor abilities and recovery-related measures. Collectively, they address key determinants of sport performance, including aerobic and anaerobic capacity, reaction and movement efficiency, training load quantification, tactical behavior, and the influence of sleep and dietary practices on adaptation and recovery. Additional contributions consider adapted and para-sport contexts, rehabilitation-oriented exercise, and the preventive value of structured physical activity in youth and clinical populations. By merging these perspectives, this Reprint provides an evidence-based account of how health and performance can be jointly assessed and optimized. The material offers a contemporary reference for researchers, practitioners and clinicians seeking to advance methodological rigor and applied practice in sport, exercise and health sciences.
Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), comprising Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, emerges from intersecting genetic risk, environmental exposures, microbiota shifts, and mucosal immune dysregulation. This Reprint, "Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis: From Pathophysiology to Novel Therapeutic Approaches (2nd Edition)," integrates 18 peer reviewed articles that connect mechanisms to practice. Mechanism guided targets include epithelial barrier injury, innate immune and pyroptosis pathways, bile acid signaling, and candidate genes such as SLC26A2 with diagnostic and therapeutic relevance. Microbiome aware care spans mucosa associated dysbiosis, oral fungi and herpesviruses as extra intestinal reservoirs, dietary signals such as coffee consumption, and emerging interventions from refined fecal microbiota transplantation to next generation probiotics. Model informed therapeutics evaluate route and dose optimization with physiologically based pharmacokinetics for infliximab, external validation of vedolizumab population pharmacokinetic models, pharmacogenetic markers of biologic response, and comparative effectiveness of subcutaneous versus intravenous IL 12/23 blockade. Patient centered outcomes and complications are addressed through evidence on postoperative recurrence in Crohn's disease, extraintestinal manifestations including ocular involvement, and the role of acceptance and perceived control in health experience. A genetics study links IBD to related immune mediated diseases and identifies novel loci, sharpening paths to precision care.
Natural Products with Pharmaceutical Activities
Nature has long been recognised as a crucial source for developing pharmaceutical agents, with many modern drug discoveries originating from naturally occurring substances. Over two-thirds of all anticancer drugs today are derived directly from unaltered natural compounds or are inspired by natural product pharmacophores. Natural products derived from plants, marine organisms, fungi, and other sources often exhibit diverse biological activities that are essential to drug discovery and development. This Reprint is a collection of articles showcasing current research and comprehensive reviews that explore natural compounds from diverse biological sources, including 1′-acetoxychavicol acetate derived from plants in the ginger family, a natural flavonoid isolated from the calyces and flowers of Roselle, a dichloromethane extract from Salvia guevarae plants of South America, and many more. Sustainability and circular use of resources are also emerging themes in natural product research, with articles in this Reprint showcasing promising pharmaceutical candidates from bio-waste. Beyond conventional plant-based sources, novel natural sources derived from bacteria and organic gemstones were also explored for their pharmaceutical activities. Collectively, these works demonstrate the growing integration of sustainability, innovation, and multidisciplinary approaches in natural product research.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Facial Skeleton, Oral Cavity, and Paranasal Sinuses
The scope of diseases of the sinuses and adjacent bones, teeth, and close anatomical sites requires good diagnostics with CT, MR, SPECT, and other imaging methods to ensure the best treatment plan possible. Excluding any primary, secondary or metastatic tumors improves patient outcomes. Various odontogenic, non-odontogenic lesions in jaw bones might be treated with vast possibilities and scope of approaches. Modern dentistry and improved endodontics can easily help in treating odontogenic sinus infections and lesions, while the scope of endoscopic FESS procedures performed by otorhinolaryngologists grants good and accurate treatment for most diseases. In some cases, when endoscopic or conservative methods of treatment are not sufficient, some standard open surgical approach is needed to remove a cyst, tumor, or another lesion within the sinus walls, antrum, maxillary jaw bones, eye socket, and surrounding craniofacial area. Typical bone related diseases and lesions like dysplasia, fibrous, or fibro-osseous bone lesions might require some osteoplasty approaches, bone modeling or even decompression approaches. Since the scope of cranio-facial diseases is quite enormous, it is important to use adequate radiological and histopathological diagnostics before proceeding further with the scheduled treatment plan.

When the Body Whispers
Long before a diagnosis appears, physiology adapts. The body compensates, protects, and finds ways to carry on. These early signs are often misread until they become impossible to ignore. In When the Body Whispers, physician and wellbeing specialist Dr Jasmin Tzortzakakis Malik offers a deeply human and scientifically grounded exploration of what happens when we override the body's early signals of imbalance, and explores what becomes possible when we learn to hear them again.Integrating neuroscience, physiology, trauma science, various aspects of psychology, and lived experience as both doctor and patient, this book examines how chronic stress, grief, trauma, long-term health conditions, post-viral illness, and sustained overload reshape the nervous system, drain energy, and erode resilience over time. Fatigue, burnout, anxiety, immune vulnerability and illness are reframed as adaptations, early warning signs and feedback from a body that has been asked to endure too much for too long.At the core of the book is the Adaptive Integration Framework model, which understands healing as an adaptive spiral. One that integrates science with story, regulation with meaning, and compassion with agency. Rather than promising quick fixes, When the Body Whispers invites readers into a steadier, more sustainable relationship with their health, one rooted in safety, rhythm, and awareness.Through reflective narratives, accessible science, and practical tools drawn from the Your Health Comes First programme, Dr Malik guides readers to: Recognise the body's early warning signals before crisis takes holdUnderstand how stress and trauma live in the nervous systemRestore balance through pacing, regulation, and recoveryRebuild energy without pushing, forcing, or collapsingThis book is written for those who have kept going when stopping felt impossible. For clinicians as well as non-clinicians, carers, high achievers, and anyone living in survival mode. When the Body Whispers is a call for prevention, presence, and compassion.A reminder that health cannot be earned after productivity; it is the ground that makes everything else possible.
Disturbances Of The Heart
Disturbances of the heart examines selected ideas from the provided text to present a focused understanding of how cardiac disorders are interpreted within a clinical framework. This summary concentrates on the book's central intention to explain heart dysfunction as a dynamic interaction between bodily processes, external influences, and measurable changes such as blood pressure. The work emphasizes that effective cardiac care depends on observing patterns rather than cataloging anatomy, guiding practitioners to study how the heart responds to strain, illness, and treatment. It highlights the value of monitoring circulation, identifying variations in pressure, and recognizing how these indicators help clinicians anticipate complications. The text portrays heart disturbance as a broader physiological concern shaped by lifestyle, environment, and the body's compensatory mechanisms. Through its practical orientation, the book encourages readers to approach cardiac issues with disciplined reasoning and an appreciation for the evolving nature of medical knowledge. This approach frames heart care as a continuous process of evaluating symptoms, testing responses, and refining judgment so practitioners can better support recovery and maintain stability in patients.
n of 1
Twenty-five years ago my doctors had no cure for my cancer. So I went on a quest to find my own treatment. This is my story... In 1991, Glenn Sabin was a 28-year-old newlywed diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)-a disease doctors called "uniformly fatal." Treatments could buy him some time and eventually ease his discomfort, but there was no conventional cure. Glenn's prognosis was clear: he was going to die. Although Glenn and his wife, Linda, continued to consult with doctors, cancer specialists and top oncologists, Glenn made a monumental decision: he would become his own health advocate. While he continued to "watch and wait," Glenn would figure out how to stay alive. No one could predict when a large-scale clinical trial would discover a cure for CLL, so Glenn began his own, medically monitored and carefully researched lifestyle changes. He would conduct his own, single patient clinical trial. He would become an "n of 1." Today, Glenn is not only alive, but a 2012 biopsy at Harvard confirmed that his bone marrow contains no leukemic cells. His case is now part of the medical literature. In n of 1, author Glenn Sabin takes readers along his remarkable journey with 'incurable' cancer, where he discovers: No two cancers are exactly alike. Our bodies, minds and diseases are unique, and need to be treated as such. Knowledge and empowerment are your best allies against a life-limiting diagnosis. Lifestyle changes are a powerful way to help prevent, manage and reduce the recurrence of disease--and to improve your quality of life. A strong support system and a clear mind may significantly improve your health. https: //www.glennsabin.com Twitter: @GlennSabin LinkedIn: https: //www.linkedin.com/in/glennsabin/

No One Tells You This
Even with today's medical advancements, family and friends are taking on the role of caregiver for their loved ones more than ever. When her mother was diagnosed with dementia, author Beth Oakley, along with her mother's partner, made the same choice out of love. Yet, this decision came with unexpected challenges. As Beth learned more about the disease-and heard stories like her own-she increasingly realized these challenges didn't have to be so unexpected. Her family's journey was at times isolating, as the COVID-19 pandemic raged on. So, Beth began writing her own story. She interviewed others caring for a family member or friend battling dementia or Alzheimer's disease. No One Tells You This: True Stories of Caring for a Loved One with Dementia is a collection of stories based on these interviews and the author's own experiences. They offer insights into each stage of caregiving, from the first signs, to accepting the diagnosis and learning how to give support, to navigating family dynamics and the Canadian healthcare system. Informative and compassionate, these stories offer a realistic perspective on the challenges of this incurable disease. As the disease presents itself in a myriad of ways, so too do these voices and their experiences. The joys and struggles, the losses and blessings-No One Tells You This shares them all. Because, as much as caregiving is a journey on a road of uncertainty, no one has to do it alone.
The Doctor's Dilemma
The doctor's dilemma: Preface on doctors presents a forceful examination of medical practice, focusing on how flawed systems can distort the intentions of those meant to provide care. The work opens with a direct challenge to the structure of the profession, arguing that financial reward can influence decisions in ways that place vulnerable patients at risk. Early reflections highlight how reliance on procedures creates an environment where intervention is encouraged even when uncertainty remains, revealing the tension between professional duty and personal gain. The text explores how fear of illness shapes public behavior, allowing medical authority to grow while leaving individuals uncertain about the motives behind the treatments they receive. Through pointed observations, the narrative questions the belief that practitioners always act with pure intent, suggesting instead that human weakness and external pressures shape choices. As these ideas unfold, the work encourages readers to consider the responsibilities carried by those in positions of trust and to reflect on the delicate balance between expertise, integrity, and the expectations of society.
Remedy
Remedy is a non-fiction work rooted in the real experiences of a nurse navigating her academic training and professional life in healthcare settings. Through a series of short chapters and reflective narratives, Norah Al-Sbeiy shares moments from hospitals, classrooms, and personal encounters that reveal the human side of medicine beyond clinical procedures. The book blends storytelling with thoughtful analysis, addressing topics such as nursing identity, patient care, emotional resilience, mental health, medical misconceptions, ethics, and the psychological dimensions of healing. Each chapter presents a lived situation-often involving patients, colleagues, or mentors-followed by reflection supported by scientific knowledge, psychological insight, or public health research.Written in accessible language, Remedy aims to demystify healthcare professions while emphasizing compassion, responsibility, and awareness. It does not require medical background knowledge, as medical terms are explained clearly, making the book approachable for general readers. Ultimately, the book serves as a testimony to the power of care, empathy, and knowledge as true remedies for both physical and emotional wounds.
Still a Bit Wonky
A daughter's tribute.A father's legacy.A love that memory loss couldn't erase. When Jack Irving Edwards was diagnosed with dementia, he began filling his days and his diaries with sketches, lotto numbers, tender notes about his beloved wife Babs, and glimpses into a mind navigating change. In Still a Bit Wonky his daughter Pat curates these diary entries and pairs them with her own reflections, creating a moving portrait of a man whose humour, warmth and optimism shone through, even as words sometimes slipped away. Heartbreaking and heart-warming in equal measure, Jack's story offers a rare and uplifting view of dementia - one where joy, connection, and love remain, even when memories fade.
The Role of Dental Nurses in Oral Health Promotion to Prevent Dental Caries in Children within General Dental Practices
Dental caries remains one of the most common yet preventable chronic conditions affecting children worldwide, despite strong evidence supporting preventive dentistry; oral health inequalities persist, particularly among children from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Addressing this challenge requires not only effective clinical interventions but also a strategic re-evaluation of how preventive care is delivered within everyday dental practice. This book presents a comprehensive scoping review of global evidence examining the roles of dental nurses in oral health promotion to prevent dental caries in children within general dental practices. Drawing on international literature and guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, the book systematically maps the preventive activities undertaken by dental nurses, including fluoride varnish application, oral health education, supervised toothbrushing, dietary counselling, and behavioural change interventions. The findings reveal that dental nurses are well-positioned to support prevention-focused models of care, yet their roles remain inconsistently defined and underutilised across healthcare systems. While evidence from high-income countries-particularly the United Kingdom-demonstrates promising outcomes, significant gaps remain in research quality, geographic representation, and long-term evaluation.Written for dental professionals, educators, policymakers, and public health practitioners, this book provides an evidence-informed foundation for strengthening the role of dental nurses in preventive dentistry. It highlights opportunities for workforce development, policy reform, and future research to reduce oral health inequalities and improve outcomes for children worldwide.Thank you

Killed by Fragrance
Killed by FragranceWhat if the scent in the air is not harmless but biologically active?Fragrance is everywhere. It is in perfumes, air fresheners, laundry detergents, cleaning sprays, candles, personal care products, and even medical settings. Marketed as clean, fresh, and safe, synthetic fragrance has become a normal part of daily life. Yet growing scientific research tells a more complex story. In Killed by Fragrance, Dr. Joseph Jacobs, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Advanced Clinical Nutritionist, examines the evidence linking synthetic fragrance exposure to inflammation, hormone disruption, neurological symptoms, immune activation, and respiratory distress. Many fragranced products contain mixtures of volatile organic compounds, endocrine disruptors, and neuroactive chemicals. Because "fragrance" can legally represent dozens or even hundreds of undisclosed ingredients, consumers often have no way of knowing what they are inhaling.Fragrance is not just scent. It is chemistry. Chemistry interacts with the body. This book explains: - How fragrance chemicals can activate the limbic system and alter the stress response- Why some people develop migraines, fatigue, brain fog, asthma-like symptoms, or skin reactions after exposure- How endocrine disrupting chemicals may interfere with thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol signaling- Why fragrance reactions often do not appear on standard allergy testing- How cumulative indoor air exposure may contribute to chronic inflammationFor individuals struggling with unexplained symptoms, chemical sensitivity, fragrance sensitivity, migraines, autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalance, or chronic fatigue, this book offers clarity grounded in scientific research. If you have ever felt sick in a scented environment and were told it was "all in your head," this book changes the conversation.Killed by Fragrance moves beyond opinion and into toxicology, neurology, environmental health, and regulatory science. It examines labeling laws, indoor air quality, and the normalization of involuntary chemical exposure in shared spaces. Most importantly, it provides practical strategies to reduce toxic exposure, improve indoor air quality, protect children and vulnerable individuals, and support the body's natural healing processes. In an age of rising chronic illness and environmental toxic load, understanding the health effects of synthetic fragrance is essential. The air you breathe matters.

Minimal Access Cardiac Surgery
As with all areas of surgical practice, there has been a move in recent years towards minimally invasive approaches to many operations. For example, VATS lobectomy is becoming the standard of care. In cardiac surgery, I think it is fair to term these approaches as minimal access, rather than minimally invasive, since the invasiveness of the surgery, in terms of cardiopulmonary bypass, cardioplegic arrest, the opening of cardiac chambers, and other aspects, is much the same. There is an increasing number of centres offering minimal-access cardiac surgery, and the range of procedures offered is expanding. Patients like the idea of minimal-access procedures for a range of reasons: improved cosmesis, the perception of faster recovery, and reduced pain. Interestingly, though, there remains some scepticism among the cardiac surgical community as to the true benefit of minimal-access cardiac surgery. Indeed, very few randomised controlled trials that compare outcomes to standard cardiac surgery remain. In some ways, it is this scepticism that prompts this timely Special Issue Reprint, where the current status of minimal-access cardiac surgery has been explored, together with consideration of future advances and directions, in order to provide the cardiac surgical community with a robust contemporary review of the current literature.
Addressing Challenges in Child Mental Health
This Reprint addresses the urgent need to study and promote child mental health from a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective. Childhood and adolescence are critical stages for cognitive, emotional, and social development, yet in recent years, mental health disorders in this population have significantly increased worldwide. Issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder have a profound impact on children's quality of life and long-term outcomes. This Reprint compiles recent research exploring risk and protective factors, effective interventions, and public health strategies aimed at promoting psychological well-being in young people. It highlights the importance of understanding current challenges-including stigma, limited access to services, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic-and the need for innovative strategies involving health professionals, educators, families, and communities.
Research on Chemical Composition and Activity of Natural Products
Nature is an inexhaustible source of biologically active substances, and interest in their research will always be relevant, regardless of whether new molecules will be discovered or new activities of already known compounds will be proven. For centuries, people have used the bounty of nature in the areas they inhabited, both for food and medicine. Today, the borders have taken on another dimension, and the accumulated knowledge about the benefits of natural products is becoming available to many more people around the world. From an ecological point of view, it is extremely important to recover waste from agriculture and the food sector, which is a potential source of biologically important molecules. Modern science allows studying the metabolism of compounds of natural origin at the cellular level, modifying natural molecules in order to obtain derivatives with better activity or lower toxicity, and conducting in-depth research on a wide range of pharmacological effects. Therefore, this Special Issue of Molecules presents the latest advances in the isolation, identification of new molecules from natural sources, biological effects of plant extracts and essential oils, and utilization of waste products.
