When the Body Whispers
Long before a diagnosis appears, physiology adapts. The body compensates, protects, and finds ways to carry on. These early signs are often misread until they become impossible to ignore. In When the Body Whispers, physician and wellbeing specialist Dr Jasmin Tzortzakakis Malik offers a deeply human and scientifically grounded exploration of what happens when we override the body's early signals of imbalance, and explores what becomes possible when we learn to hear them again.Integrating neuroscience, physiology, trauma science, various aspects of psychology, and lived experience as both doctor and patient, this book examines how chronic stress, grief, trauma, long-term health conditions, post-viral illness, and sustained overload reshape the nervous system, drain energy, and erode resilience over time. Fatigue, burnout, anxiety, immune vulnerability and illness are reframed as adaptations, early warning signs and feedback from a body that has been asked to endure too much for too long.At the core of the book is the Adaptive Integration Framework model, which understands healing as an adaptive spiral. One that integrates science with story, regulation with meaning, and compassion with agency. Rather than promising quick fixes, When the Body Whispers invites readers into a steadier, more sustainable relationship with their health, one rooted in safety, rhythm, and awareness.Through reflective narratives, accessible science, and practical tools drawn from the Your Health Comes First programme, Dr Malik guides readers to: Recognise the body's early warning signals before crisis takes holdUnderstand how stress and trauma live in the nervous systemRestore balance through pacing, regulation, and recoveryRebuild energy without pushing, forcing, or collapsingThis book is written for those who have kept going when stopping felt impossible. For clinicians as well as non-clinicians, carers, high achievers, and anyone living in survival mode. When the Body Whispers is a call for prevention, presence, and compassion.A reminder that health cannot be earned after productivity; it is the ground that makes everything else possible.
Disturbances Of The Heart
Disturbances of the heart examines selected ideas from the provided text to present a focused understanding of how cardiac disorders are interpreted within a clinical framework. This summary concentrates on the book's central intention to explain heart dysfunction as a dynamic interaction between bodily processes, external influences, and measurable changes such as blood pressure. The work emphasizes that effective cardiac care depends on observing patterns rather than cataloging anatomy, guiding practitioners to study how the heart responds to strain, illness, and treatment. It highlights the value of monitoring circulation, identifying variations in pressure, and recognizing how these indicators help clinicians anticipate complications. The text portrays heart disturbance as a broader physiological concern shaped by lifestyle, environment, and the body's compensatory mechanisms. Through its practical orientation, the book encourages readers to approach cardiac issues with disciplined reasoning and an appreciation for the evolving nature of medical knowledge. This approach frames heart care as a continuous process of evaluating symptoms, testing responses, and refining judgment so practitioners can better support recovery and maintain stability in patients.
The Essential Guide to Cardiovascular Health
India stands at the epicentre of a devastating and largely silent health emergency. Every year, an alarming 272 lives per 100,000 people are lost to cardiovascular disease (CVD), making it the leading cause of death in the country. In a nation of over 1.4 billion people, this translates into millions of families affected by heart attacks, strokes, chronic illness, disability, and premature loss. Yet despite its scale and severity, heart disease is often misunderstood, underestimated, or discovered far too late. This is an epidemic no one can afford to ignore. What makes the crisis more troubling is that much of cardiovascular disease is preventable, manageable, or reversible when addressed early and correctly. The real challenge lies not only in access to healthcare, but in access to clear, reliable, and practical knowledge. Medical jargon, confusing test results, and contradictory advice often leave patients and caregivers overwhelmed, anxious, and unsure of what steps to take next. The path to heart health should not feel like a maze. This essential and accessible guide is designed to change that. It transforms complex cardiac science into simple, actionable understanding, empowering readers to make informed decisions about their heart health. Written in plain language and grounded in real-world concerns, the book is meant for patients newly diagnosed with heart conditions, caregivers supporting loved ones, and anyone who wants to protect their heart before problems begin. The book offers a comprehensive yet easy-to-follow overview of major cardiovascular conditions, including Coronary Artery Disease, Hypertension, Stroke, Arrhythmias, and heart failure. It explains what these conditions are, why they occur, how they progress, and how they are diagnosed-without overwhelming the reader. Common symptoms are clarified, myths are addressed, and warning signs that should never be ignored are clearly highlighted.Beyond diagnosis, the guide focuses strongly on control and prevention. Readers are walked through the role of lifestyle choices such as diet, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and tobacco use, alongside the importance of medications and regular monitoring. It explains how small, consistent changes can significantly reduce risk and improve quality of life. Special attention is given to the realities of heart disease in the Indian context, including genetic risk, urban lifestyles, dietary patterns, and access to care.Importantly, this book does not promote fear-it promotes confidence and clarity. It helps readers understand medical reports, ask the right questions during doctor visits, and actively participate in their treatment plans. By replacing uncertainty with knowledge, it encourages a proactive rather than reactive approach to heart health.Your heart health is too important to leave to chance, confusion, or delay. Whether you are seeking answers after a diagnosis or looking to prevent disease before it starts, this guide offers a trusted roadmap. The time to take control is not tomorrow or someday-it is now.

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms in Immune Regulation
This is a Reprint of the first edition of the Special Issue on "Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms in Immune Regulation" published by the journal Cells in 2024-2025. The reprint starts with a review of the latest advances in molecular mechanisms of immunity and the effect of X chromosome loss in immune function. Next, we focus on autoimmunity by exploring the use of circular RNAs as biomarkers in multiple sclerosis and the role of circulating T cell subsets in Type 1 diabetes. We conclude reviewing the part played by lipid biosynthesis metabolism in the inflammatory response mediated by microglia in neurodegeneration and wound healing in the central nervous system. The importance of Immune regulation for preventive medicine is highlighted by a review on the interactions of T follicular helper cells and B cells and their role in the control of viral infections and vaccine design. Next, we explore how immune cell populations affect the prognosis of cancer patients treated by Immunotherapy using immune check point inhibitors. We conclude this part with an emphasis on tissue resident memory T cells (TRMs) and their potential in the control of cancer metastasis. The Special Issue concludes with articles highlighting the interactions between the environment and the immune system, specifically on the generation of tolerogenic dendritic cells mediated by oxygen tension in tissues and exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) on the skin. Thus, this reprint provides a glimpse of the multi-cellular immunoregulatory networks implicated in autoimmune diseases, infection and cancer as well as during normal interactions with the environment.

"I'm not supposed to be here."But here I am.Born with a degenerative muscle condition and a future prewritten by doctors before she could even walk, Rhiannon Anderson was told she'd never live a full life. Instead, she chose to live a fierce one.In Faith, Freedom, and Other F-Words, Rhiannon throws out society's rulebook and reclaims what it means to live, speak, and thrive with disability. This isn't just a memoir about Muscular Dystrophy-it's a story about refusing to be reduced, rewritten, or pitied. It's about standing in your truth, even when that truth makes people uncomfortable.Because here's the thing: Disability is not one-size-fits-all. Powerful and painful. Messy, funny, unfair-and deeply human. In a world that prefers its disability stories sweet, sanitised, and "inspiring," Rhiannon dares to tell the whole truth. The one with the grief, the grit, and the hard conversations. The one that includes joy, purpose, and freedom-not despite disability but often because of it.From childhood battles with understanding her differences, bullying and self-worth to adult moments of love, loss, and faith, every chapter is infused with courage, vulnerability, and unfiltered honesty. Whether she's navigating the healthcare system, healing on horseback, confronting ableism, or unlearning perfectionism, Rhiannon invites readers to go on this journey beside her. This book is for anyone who's ever felt like they didn't belong. For anyone who's tired of shrinking to make others more comfortable. And for anyone ready to rewrite the narrative-not just about disability, but about life."Be bold, be strong, be selfless, be courageous. Every single human on the face of the planet is unique in their own way. We were not born to be the same. We were born to contribute andleave our mark on the world." - Rhiannon AndersonIf you're looking for permission to defy expectations-here it is.
Vagus & Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation
The first and only layperson's guide to both vagus and trigeminal nerve stimulation for Long COVID, dysautonomia, fatigue, brain fog, and more. This book covers what your doctors may not explain: how the vagus nerve and trigeminal nerve (two key regulators of your body's healing systems) can be gently stimulated to help reduce symptoms and support recovery.Inside, you'll find practical answers to questions like: What do the vagus and trigeminal nerves actually do?How does Long COVID damage these nerves-and what symptoms result? Is taVNS (ear stimulation) better than tcVNS (neck stimulation)? What's the safest way to start if I'm sensitive or reactive? How can I use TENS devices at home for nerve stimulation? What's the difference between vagus nerve exercises and actual stimulation? Can vagus nerve stimulation help with anxiety, insomnia, or POTS?What does forehead-based trigeminal nerve stimulation help with? Why do some people feel worse at first-and how do you manage it?Can overstimulation be harmful? How long should I continue using nerve stimulation?Whether you're dealing with Long COVID, ME/CFS, dysautonomia, POTS, MCAS, anxiety, or burnout, this book will help you understand how your nervous system works-and how to support it in healing.
Pots
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is currently defined as a 'syndrome', a collection of symptoms for which the root cause has not yet been identified. This book aims to rectify this by arguing the case for POTS being considered a form of neurological injury to the limbic system following an antecedent trauma, such as a viral illness, pregnancy, surgery or psychological trauma (or a combination). Patrick Ussher himself had POTS but recovered by following a limbic system rehabilitation program (originally developed to treat Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) called the Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS). After recovery, he set about mapping the idea of a limbic system impairment onto pre-existing research into POTS and found that it could explain many key findings including: NET protein deficiency (which is responsible for blood vessel constriction problems and resulting elevated heart rate upon standing), low aldosterone and poor sodium retention (which are responsible for low blood volume problems) and mast cell activation problems. This book will simultaneously act as a guide for those interested in using the DNRS as a treatment for POTS and also as a call for further research into the potential efficacy of the DNRS for treating POTS.
Cochlear Implant Basics, What a Candidate for a Cochlear Implant Needs to Know
Cochlear Implant Basics: What a Candidate for a Cochlear Implant Needs to Know is designed as both a guide and a companion. For many, the suggestion of a cochlear implant can be overwhelming-even frightening. Author Richard Pocker's goal is to dispel misconceptions, answer common questions, and provide a clear path through what can often feel like uncharted territory. Within these pages, you'll find the transcripts of twenty-five podcast interviews, rehabilitation exercises used after surgery and activation, and a carefully curated list of resources. Together, these resources form a roadmap for anyone considering or beginning the cochlear implant journey. Above all, Cochlear Implant Basics is about hope and connection. A cochlear implant can restore not only speech comprehension and awareness of environmental sounds but also the joy of music, the ease of a phone call, and the simple yet profound gift of participation in daily life. This book's objective is to reach those "sitting on the fence" and encourage them to step forward-to leave the isolation of deafness behind and rediscover the fullness of living.

Being Emma
Born with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare and excruciatingly painful condition that makes her skin as fragile as butterfly wings, Emma Fogarty was not expected to survive infancy. Today, at 41 years of age, she is the oldest living Irish person with the condition, continuing to defy the odds with extraordinary strength, resilience and remarkable achievements. However, every accomplishment Emma makes comes with its own set of obstacles. EB is a cruel disease which causes her skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. She can no longer walk, and she lost the use of her fingers when they fused together. Her bandages need to be changed every two days, an agonising process which takes hours. Emma's daily life is a battle against debilitating pain, yet she embraces every moment with fierce positivity and determination. In 2024, she took part in the Dublin Marathon alongside her close friend Colin Farrell to mark her 40th birthday, raising over 1 million for DEBRA Ireland. Emma's skin may be fragile, but her spirit is unbreakable - shattering every expectation and lighting the way for everyone who dares to dream beyond their circumstances.

Total Load Theory
About one in six children and many adults are diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. What causes autism, attention, learning disabilities, and anxiety? Patricia Lemer answers that question with a new paradigm: "Total Load Theory." This etiology fingers not a single cause, but rather a complex combination of biological, environmental, immunological, neurological, psychological, and toxicological load factors. Lemer provides an in-depth description of underlying stressors and how they accumulate, causing sensory, motor, language, social-emotional, and other symptoms, leading to a diagnosis. By applying this roadmap, families and practitioners can learn how to maximize function in their loved ones and patients. Reversing poor lifestyle choices around diet, sleep, exercise, along with returning traumatized nervous systems to feeling safe are all crucial. Next steps include enhancing digestion, and immune and endocrine function. Lemer addresses the role of the sensory processing, with an emphasis on vision. She also looks at improving problematic dental structure and function. The book moves into enhancing language and social-emotional areas at all ages. How these higher-level areas depend on neurological, biological, and sensory integrity are described in detail. The exciting new use of letterboards for communication can be life-changing. Several chapters on future planning include options for education, supervised living, employment, and finances. The book ends with a chapter for prospective parents on reducing load factors from preconception. The future is calling. We must act now, and this book is the perfect guide.
