Imagining Telephus
Telephus, son of Heracles and king of Mysia, was a key figure in the Trojan War. Both enemy and ally of the Achaeans, he fought against them, was wounded and then cured by Achilles, and led Agamemnon's army to Troy. This book is the first comprehensive study on his myth. It investigates fragmentary artefacts and texts, offers new readings and interpretations, and frames the evidence in its socio-political, historical, and cultural contexts. What results is a view of an ever-changing myth embedded in diverse cultural milieux, a product and a catalyst of cross-cultural exchanges, and an instrument of soft power. After assessing the sources, this book provides a contextual history of the myth, from the seventh to the first centuries BC, paying particular attention to cultural contacts in the context of migratory movements and consequent hybridisation of different social and cultural systems; repurposing and remodelling of cultural products to follow specific agendas; cultural policy and propaganda enforced through mass media and used as soft power; and more besides. All texts are translated and thus fully accessible to readers interested in myth, migration studies, cross-cultural studies, cultural history, and literary criticism.
Biblica et Philologica
The present volume includes 19 studies on topics related to the tradition and transmission of the biblical text in various periods and geographical areas. The volume is dedicated to Professor Eugen Munteanu, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, Professor Emeritus of "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, by colleagues, friends and disciples, on the occasion of his 70th anniversary (2023). Ten of these studies focus on the crystallisation of various traditions of the biblical text and its transmission through translation: the reception of the reviewed biblical text by the Church Fathers; classical language versions and the emergence of the vernacular; the consolidation of national traditions of the biblical text and its various subtypes - Prophetologion, Psalters, Gospel; pre-modern and contemporary translations of the biblical text based on case studies; interferences and parallelisms between national traditions. Three studies focus on the linguistic perspective, analysing various translations of the biblical text and the formation of related terminology. Two studies are dedicated to images accompanying the biblical text (maps and engravings), whereas three other studies point to the advantages and disadvantages of the use of computers in biblical studies and present two examples of electronic resources built for the study of the biblical text and its modes of transmission. All these topics are closely related to Professor Eugen Munteanu織s favourite research areas.
Why The Fall When God Is Leading?
Many people, especially professors of faith, have unanswered questions about life. We might hide the issues in our subconscious, but we never stop struggling with these unresolved contradictions. One such question is: "Why do Christians suffer?" Closely related to this is the question, "Why do the unrighteous prosper?" This book seeks to unravel the mystery behind tribulation and affliction. It will explain what David meant when he wrote the following words: "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand." You will learn from the lives of two "good men," namely Joseph and Jesus, that everything God allows in your life is always for good. "This book is refreshing, east to understand, and balanced."Rev. Kingsley Appiagyei, Trinity Baptist Church, London

Mysticism By Default
Mysticism By Default explores the profound intersection of scientific naturalism and mystical philosophy. Author W. J. Whitman makes a compelling case that the core insights of mysticism-such as the unity of being, the oneness of consciousness, and the transcendent nature of reality-are not only compatible with science but seem to arise naturally from its principles. Drawing on diverse traditions like Sufism, Hesychasm, and Buddhism, alongside modern scientific methodology and theories of consciousness such as Integrated Information Theory and General Resonance Theory, this book presents a groundbreaking perspective. Whitman invites readers to see mysticism not as a rejection of reason but as a natural extension of it, offering a rational framework for exploring humanity's most profound questions. Engaging, insightful, and deeply thought-provoking, Mysticism By Default is a must-read for seekers, skeptics, and anyone interested in bridging the worlds of science and spirituality.
Wonders are wonderful
"WONDERS ARE WONDERFUL" tells of "unbelievable" experiences with Jesus, of angels, of the forces of nature and of our human struggle with our logic and what the Word of God has to say about it. Miracles are not logical and yet they happen through the power of God, HIS word and our faith in Jesus and HIS power. And how often do we limit ourselves and our faith because we cannot see and allow the possibility of miracles. The Bible is full from front to back with reports of miracles, which we need today more than ever. This book should help you to jump over the boundary wall of logic more often in order to land in the "WONDERFUL WORLD" of God and faith.
I Want My Church Back
This "timeless" book was written thereby to resuscitate what people have called an outdated, slumping movement and renew its purpose for existence. That purpose is to be a vehicle for healing and deliverance in a broken society. Yet, what happens if the church is broken? How does it participate in the healing of the world? The desired result is to produce a purpose-driven, loving, need-fulfilling, life-changing "model church", that honors God in word and deed.

God and Happiness
This Element explores the connection between God and happiness, with happiness understood as a life of well-being or flourishing that goes well for the one living it. It provides a historical and contemporary survey of philosophical questions, theories, and debates about happiness, and it asks how they should be answered and evaluated from a theistic perspective. The central topics it covers are the nature of happiness (what is it?), the content of happiness (what are the constituents of a happy life?), the structure of happiness (is there a hierarchy of goods?), and the possibility of happiness (can we be happy?). It argues that God's existence has significant, positive, and desirable implications for human happiness.
Jewish Concepts of Divine Oneness
This book offers a selective, typological overview of Jewish perspectives on the belief in God's oneness. To achieve this, the author divides the history of Judaism into four phases - biblical, rabbinic, medieval, and modern - and presents diverse models for understanding the reality of divine oneness within each phase. These models not only offers insight into different perspectives on the topic but also illuminate diverse layers of polemical discourse in the Jewish tradition, whether internal or in dialogue with other religions and worldviews. In addition, the author invites readers to consider how to think about the plurality of the perspectives at hand, and if and how such meta-reflection can enrich the lives of contemporary readers, Jewish and non-Jewish alike. No prior knowledge of Judaism is necessary.
The Politics of Monotheism
Monotheism, the belief in the One True God, seems to have an ambiguous role in political life: On the one hand, monotheism may foster the inclusion of everybody, regardless of identity or background. On the other, monotheistic religions demand submission to a singular revealed truth, distinguish between faithful and the heretics, and thus seemingly promote an antagonistic and tribalistic politics. What, then, are the political implications of the monotheistic belief in absolute truth? This Element traces the Enlightenment origins of our contemporary debates about monotheism and argues that these debates reflect a deeper Western ambivalence towards religion. It does so while discussing both secular and Christian critics of the politics of monotheism. The Element contends that there is no singular politics of monotheism, and that we can only approach monotheism's political significance if we take seriously the various ways in which truth is represented in political life in monotheistic traditions.
The Problem of God in Jewish Thought
The Hebrew Bible contains two quite different divine personae. One is quick to anger and to exact punishment while the other is a compassionate God slow to anger and quick to forgive. One God distant, the other close by. This severe contrast posed a theological challenge for Jewish thought for the ages. This Element follows selected views in rabbinic literature, medieval Jewish philosophy, Jewish mystical thought, the Hasidic movement, modern Jewish theology, response to the Holocaust, and Jewish feminist theology. In the history of Jewish thought there was often a tendency to identify closely with the God of compassion.
Exactly the Same Coin
One man's life, through his own eyes, from his death bed. Evaluating his choices through life is a painful exercise; seeing the outcome now with the benefit of hindsight is a heartbreaking experience. Can anyone or anything be salvaged from the wreckage of the family he was responsible for creating? Christie Bature Ogbeifun has been in full time ministry since 1989, and is the president of Sine Qua Non Ministries, Port Harcourt. Christie has a background of Electrical/ Electronics Engineering, but opted for ministry as she found more fulfillment there. The ministry reaches out in many ways, among which are: Campus Outreach, Couples Outreach, T.V. ministry, Christie Bature Concerts, and PACT Network (a ministry to the addicted) She has ministered the gospel in quite a few places, within and outside of Nigeria. Her T.V. programme "Everyday People" is a simple down to earth approach for walking through life with just a little more faith today than yesterday. It mainly addresses family, and sexual addiction and recovery. It has been running for eleven years and is currently airing in fifty three nations. Christie is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors, and a certified Life Coach. She has written seven books and also has six albums. Music and Monotheism
What connects the phenomenon of music as an art with the belief in one indivisible God? What has music, a non-linguistic medium, to say about the personal, loving, communicative God of Scripture and the Prophets, or the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, transcendent God of the Philosophers and can it bring these 'concepts of God' together? To answer these questions, this book takes divine Creation as its starting point, that the God of monotheism must be the Creator of all that is. It thus argues that anything which instantiates and facilitates communication within the created realm has been enabled to do so by a God who communicates with His Creation, and who wishes that His Creation be communicative. Indeed, it will argue that the communication allowed by music, and aesthetic experience in general, is the very raison d'礙tre of Abrahamic monotheism and might thus allow an opportunity for dialogue between monotheistic faiths.
God and the Problem of Epistemic Defeaters
Any modern, moderately intellectually mature (MMIM) believer in God faces a variety of epistemic defeaters of their belief in God. Epistemic defeaters challenge the rationality of a belief. After explaining the notion of a defeater and discussing various ways and targets of defeat, this Element categorizes the many defeaters of belief in God into four classes: rebutting, undercutting, base defeaters, and competence defeaters. Then, several general defeaters of theistic belief are examined in some detail: the superfluity argument, the problem of unpossessed evidence, various forms of debunking arguments, and a cumulative case competence defeater. The typical MMIM believer, it is argued, has resources to resist these defeaters, although the cumulative case competence defeater has some force. The strength of its force depends on the strength of grounds for theistic belief and of various defeaters and deflectors for the competence defeater. No easy general defeater of theistic belief is found.

Staging Witchcraft Before the Law
While the judicial machinery of early modern witch-hunting could work with terrifying swiftness, skepticism and evidentiary barriers often made conviction difficult. Seeking proof strong enough to overcome skepticism, judges and accusers turned to performance, staging 'acts of Sorcery and Witch-craft manifest to sense.' Looking at an array of demonological treatises, pamphlets, documents, and images, this Element shows that such staging answered to specific doctrines of proof: catching the criminal 'in the acte'; establishing 'notoriety of the fact'; producing 'violent presumptions' of guilt. But performance sometimes overflowed the demands of doctrine, behaving in unpredictable ways. A detailed examination of two cases - the 1591 case of the French witch-demoniac Fran癟oise Fontaine and the 1593 case of John Samuel of Warboys -suggests the manifold, multilayered ways that evidentiary staging could signify - as it can still in that conjuring practice we call law. Reviving Intellectual Intuition in Metaphysics
Calling for a revival of intellectual intuition in metaphysics long after its banning by Kant, Kenneth Rose overcomes the forgetfulness of being through contemplative ontology. Rose argues for the reinstatement of intellectual intuition in metaphysics long after its banning by Kant. His claim is not merely the conclusion of a thought-experiment or of an exercise in conceptual analysis. It is the result of the contemplative recognition of being with a meditatively concentrated intellect: nous in Greek and buddhi in Sanskrit. Recognizing intellectual intuition as a long-neglected faculty of philosophical insight, Rose shows how it can result in an immediate, intuitive discerning of being. He discusses how being parcels itself out into the intellectual forms providing the underlying nonphysical arrangement of the physical and mental worlds. By reviving the use of intellectual intuition in metaphysics, Rose draws upon historical sources across multiple Asian and Anglo-European philosophical schools. This is a work of contemplative constructive philosophy that breaks down divisions between science, philosophy, and religion and between diverse cultures and divergent worldviews.
Collective Intentionality and the Study of Religion
In this open access book, Andrea Rota makes the case for philosophical, theoretical, and empirical approaches to the study of religion, drawing on ongoing debates and challenging individualist perspectives. Rota begins with a survey of the work of Michael Bratman, John Searle, Raimo Tuomela, and Margaret Gilbert exploring the relevance of their insights for the study of religion. He sets out a theoretical framework to operationalize their philosophical ideas in an empirical research setting. Applying this framework in Part Two, Rota analyses the collective agency of Jehovah's Witnesses, focusing on the roles that print and electronic media play in structuring communicative processes that conduce to collective intentions and commitments. He presents extensive fieldwork carried out in Switzerland and Germany, examining both qualitative and quantitative data. By demonstrating the fruitfulness of philosophical perspectives on collective intentionality and social ontology, Rota's study makes a timely contribution to our understanding of the beliefs, emotions, and aesthetic experiences of religious groups. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
An Apostate Church
God has been pleased to communicate His truth to the world by human agencies, and He Himself, by His Holy Spirit, qualified men and enabled them to do this work. He guided the mind in the selection of what to speak as well as what to write. These treasures were entrusted to earthen vessels, yet it is, nonetheless, from God. The testimony is conveyed through the imperfect expression of human language, yet it is the testimony of God; and the obedient, believing child of God beholds in it the glory of a divine power, full of grace and truth. In His word, God has committed to men the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are to be accepted as an authoritative, infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the reveler of doctrines, and the test of experience. However the Church as we know it has forgotten these truths and fallen into a state of apostasy, this book takes a look at it and how it effects us.
Life Purpose

Will Luca find salvation in his journey-or will the weight of eternity drag him into damnation? Reading as If for Life
Creaking open the pages of a heavy hardback, or bending the spine of a poetry book over your knee on the train; squinting over curled-up pages by the light of a candle, or scribbling notes in the margins in the corner of a sprawling library. There are many who read as if for life; many for whom, as David Dickinson explores, reading does not just feed the mind but also the soul. Reading as if for Life takes us beyond the spirituality of sacred texts, and into the spiritual possibilities of 'secular' literature: the opportunity to find or empty oneself, the chance to engage in silent conversation with an absent other, the appreciation of beauty and art, the possibility of enlightenment. From Augustine of Hippo to Thomas Hardy, Iris Murdoch, the poetry of R.S. Thomas, Duffy and Donne, and many other literary works, David Dickinson explores how writers throughout the centuries have understood and experienced their own spirituality of reading. For Dickinson, these myriad journeys all bring us closer to an encounter with God, dreaming ourselves into a world beyond. This book invites its readers to see reading as a valuable spiritual exercise.
The Gospel and Cultural Applicability
Just as the four brave young men in the book of Daniel, today as believers we can stand in the midst of culture mix-up and represent Christ. The young men defied the gargantuan King Nebuchadnezzar, and we're thrown into a fiery furnace, Daniel was thrown into a put of lions, but their faith never wavered neither did they shame God. For centuries, their heroic stand has captured the hearts of both the young and the old. Their refusal to obey the King's behest, three charges were laid against them, they paid no heed for the king and his commands, and they did not serve the king's God's and refused to worship the golden statue the king had set. From the king's advisors, the penalty for their action was death. Their response against their charges to the king was profound, Daniel 3:15, "...Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of thine hand, O King. But if not, be it known unto thee, that we will not serve thy God's nor worship the golden image which though hast set up."
Some Things Considered
In Some Things Considered, Bryan Ball offers his readers a unique selection of distinctive essays on topics of theological and historical significance. Designed as stand-alone essays, across the volume Ball nevertheless explores the core beliefs fundamental to Christianity and key principles of biblical interpretation, allowing readers to come to his later chapters with a thorough grounding in biblical theology and interpretation. Ball then explores a variety of topics, from the geological and geophysical evidence of the Genesis Flood to the seventeenth century controversy about the Sabbath day. Honing in on oft-misunderstood verses such as Daniel 8:14 and Genesis 1:16, he offers nuanced interpretations. He culminates the collection with a discussion of the biblical context surrounding the 'The Decline of the West'.

Aegyptic Dance
There has been a decided lack of scholarship relating to dance and its role in the ancient Egyptian religion. In those distant times dance held a place of much greater importance than it does today. Dancers and singers were even considered to be members of the clergy and many High Priestesses were temple dancers or singers. While there has been some effort to study the ancient forms of dance, there has been a paucity of attention made to linking dance to other archaeological discoveries. One of the major resources has been Lexanova's - written in 1937. It is hoped that Aegyptic Dance will suggest sufficient sources to enable further, deeper research into the subject.Aegyptic Dance tries to bring disparate sources of dance history and sociology into one place to ease availability for the student of dance. In ancient times dance held higher social and religious status than at present and dancers were considered members of the clergy of the major Kemetic sects. Many High Priestesses, especially of Hathor, were temple dancers, and dance was an important part of religious and secular celebrations and devotions as well as funeral interment rites..
Herman Bavinck: Centenary Essays
Commemorating the hundredth anniversary of his death, these seven essays explore the legacy of the Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck (1854-1921). Presenting a snapshot of the state of play in Bavinck Studies, this volume pays tribute to a remarkable figure whose intellectual horizon extended far past the church and academy. Covering Bavinck's contribution to theology, ethics, philology, psychology and pedagogy, this volume presents a portrait of a thinker who continues to inspire a vision of a theology that is at once orthodox and modern.
The Formation of Eastern Comparative Religion Studies
It is essential to acknowledge that Abu Rayhan Beruni, one of the greatest encyclopedic scholars of Transoxiana, made significant contributions not only in various fields but also in religious studies. His ability to study religious issues objectively, employing all methodologies of religious studies, while maintaining his personal religious views without letting them influence his scientific activities, is commendable.Beruni demonstrated that studying all religions in which people believe does not harm the Islamic faith or the beliefs of Muslims. On the contrary, he showed that it enhances the superiority of Islam, even in the challenging circumstances of his time.In this book, we can see how the scholar addresses the history of religions and some problematic situations in religious matters, presenting them in a religious-scientific manner, prioritizing the subject over personal perspectives.
