The Land of Sand and Cotton
The Texas League's first baseball season in 1888 took place during a turbulent political, economic, and cultural time in Texas. Amid the millions of acres of wild and rural Texas frontier boomed the cities of Galveston, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin, where the new state capitol building had just opened. The Texas economy was transitioning from its legendary cattle drives as those cities competed for diverse business. In this cauldron Texas cities used whatever means they had to compete for population and business from other parts of the country, welcoming urban activities and entertainment typically reserved for cosmopolitan Eastern cities, such as professional baseball. The Land of Sand and Cotton uncovers key elements in the come-up of baseball in the state, such as important games in the newly formed Texas League, racial tensions and the semipro Colored League, the pivotal Major League barnstorming tour, financial struggles during the season, and outside political influences. The Land of Sand and Cotton tells the origin story of Texas baseball, which culminated in Major League franchises and World Series championships in both Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth. A much different game was played in 1888, when there really might have been cowboys, gunfighters, longhorns, and horses around every corner.

A Long Cast
Our passions have a way of doing that for us: extending our livesIn 1971, a father and son ventured out of their apartment in New Jersey to the Island of Martha's Vineyard to try their hand at surfcasting. That trip began a life of Spring trips to the waters' edge in search of bluefish and striped bass. Fifty years later, Mike Carotta takes readers along for thirty straight nights and days of fishing. This is not a How To book. It does not contain the secrets to a fantastic fishing career. Rather, hard fishing has a way of revealing lessons from the shore and the people who gather there-binding together strangers in conversations and gestures, failures and successes, new learnings, and, eventually, creating old friends.Through it all, more than fish are caught-and shared. The result is a thoughtful collection of essays on life with some notes from the trade filtered in. Join Mike on his pilgrimage back to where the distance between heaven and earth gets a little thinner and the real "keepers" of the trip go far beyond the fish on the end of the line."I am not a good surf fisherman. There are no helpful fishing hints here. This is a collection of recollection: stories of saltwater characters, occurrences, and conversations. Like stars in the night sky, they are best enjoyed when you get some distance from the lights of other stuff." - Excerpt from A Long Cast"We read books for all kinds of reasons. Learning to fish is not the reason to read A Long Cast. Learning why we go fishing certainly is. ... [This book] is a compendium of those warm memories that keep us going through the offseason and keep us coming back to those places we love. This is not about the fish we catch, but about the people who have been caught by the fish in a magical place." -Rip Cunningham, former Editor-In-Chief and Publisher of Salt Water Sportsman magazine, an inductee into the Fishing Hall of Fame, and a friend of the fish"Carotta admits, again and again, that he's not all that great at fishing, and that humility makes the book sing. ... He isn't afraid to mix the mundane with the profound. One page has him fumbling with tackle, the next has him brushing up against something eternal." -Literary Titan

Touch, Pause, Engage!
South Africa is a land of contrasts, as the tourist brochures promise, and this is true for the game of rugby. From the Pretoria heartland to the aspirant Eastern Cape, from the hardscrabble Cape Flats to the islands of privilege at Bishops and Grey College. No other rugby-playing nation has to grapple with so much diversity. Different languages, classes, races and cultures - each bearing the wounds of the country's fractured past - have to be melded into winning teams. Liz McGregor has spent the past three years shadowing Currie Cup, Super 14 and Springbok teams across the country, and has come to the conclusion that it is this very diversity, combined with the pain of the past and the dreams of a great united future, that provide the elusive alchemy that separates a good team from a great one. Touch, Pause, Engage! is more than a book about rugby. It is an intimate look at how South Africa's erstwhile elite is adapting to its new circumstances. Team South Africa has been through many a maul and bruising scrum, but is inching closer and closer to the tryline.
