My Triathlon Family
I wrote this book to share with the world how much this sport means to me. I look forward to reading this children's book to my son Glen. My wife and I cherish our son and can't wait till the day we can do a triathlon together as a family. If you have children or not, I hope you enjoy this children's book and the message it conveys. This children's book reflects a relatively new and growing sport. Actually, it is more than a sport, it is a lifestyle. This lifestyle is the sport of triathlon. I have been involved in the sport since the summer of 1995. I got involved through one of my brothers. Having been blessed with pretty good genetics in regards to athletics, I signed up for my first triathlon, Mrs. T's triathlon in Chicago, IL. Having a reckless arrogance towards sports, I did not train for this event. I figured I would adapt to this new sport as easily as all the others. On race morning I was ready to go. I waited ankle deep, at the front of a pack of 100 swimmers, in Lake Michigan for the starting horn to blow. The horn went off, and I was gone. I was caught in about 20 seconds and proceeded to be kicked, elbowed and shoved as I was swam over. I tried to regain my composure but the pummeling continued. I started to get a little concerned and began looking for a lifeboat. I spotted one and struggled in that direction. The life guard manning this boat recognized my conflict and hauled me into his boat. After rescuing three more people, we were dropped off on shore, disqualified but allowed to finish the race if we desired to. A little shaken, I quickly gained respect for this new sport. Back in the 1990's, this sport was just seen as something that "triathletes" (whomever these people were) did. Where did these people come from and why would they put themselves through such punishment. I came away from my first experience with the sport of triathlon feeling, like no pun intended, a "fish out of water." Where I once felt confident and well rounded, I was now uneasy and wondering if I should walk away from this new sport. Looking back, I can see that the sport of triathlon demands some of the same qualities as life. Triathlon is no longer for the super fit, or the gifted athletes. It is for the young and the old, heavy and thin, healthy and sick and even those with a handicap. Everyone has there own reason for competing in this sport. Something different drives each of them. Perhaps triathlon may mimic some of life's struggles and they are here to conquer them. Triathlon demands diversity, motivation, intensity, strength, patience, endurance and the ability to transition. The sport of triathlon has changed my life in many ways. I have conquered. There are so many different types of triathletes. There are slow and steady triathletes. People racing others in their age group. People racing the clock. And of course, the pro's of the sport. The diversity of this sport is what makes it so great. As the years go by, I have been able to appreciate so much more about life through this sport. It is not about the race, it is about the journey getting to the race. Enjoy the journey, it may be the best part. The race may just be the icing on the cake! I have been able to learn to enjoy the journey. This journey has become a lifestyle. I met my wife at a triathlon in 2001. Our paths crossed as she is active in marathons and was volunteering at this triathlon with some friends. We were married the next year and welcomed our first child soon after. We continue our triathlon lifestyle with our son. He really enjoys riding in the baby carrier behind dad's bike. Our son loves to be read to. He enjoys turning the pages and pointing to the pictures. My wife and I noticed that there are very few children's books about the sports that make up triathlon, let alone triathl

Baseball's October showcase has provided some high drama over the years. Willie Mays's spectacular catch in 1954, Bill Mazeroski's walk-off homer in 1960, and Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit blast in 1988 are just a few of the memorable moments that have dominated highlight reels. The outcome of the Series has not always been terribly surprising--especially during the late-1940s/early-1950s when the Yankees captured five consecutive championships, breaking their previous record of four straight titles from 1936 to 1939. But in spite of its predictability at times, the Fall Classic has taken many unexpected turns. The 1906 Cubs lost to the weak-hitting White Sox after establishing a new regular season record for wins. The 1955 Dodgers avenged seven prior October failures with an improbable victory over the seemingly invincible Yankees. And in 1969, the Mets finally shed their image as "loveable losers," dethroning the powerful Orioles. In more than a century of World Series play, a number of similar scenarios have emerged. Twenty-two of those stories are told in Shoctober. The book also includes an appendix of game statistics as well as a section on World Series trivia.
Poor Man's Golf
Golf was the most popular stick and ball game throughout the 1800s in the UK, but it wasn't the golf played in Scotland. It was 'poor man's golf' as played throughout all the former Danelaw area of England and more properly called knur and spell. This game was played by thousands of players, in hundreds or even thousands of locations, across a very wide area. It was played for centuries in all the northern counties of England including the ones which border on Scotland. It was even played in Scotland itself and was also played in Australia and the USA.Strangely enough, the Scots rarely give this game a mention when they talk about the origins of golf. How does that work?
Inventing the Boston Game
On Boston Common stands a monument dedicated to the Oneida Football Club. It honors the site where, in the 1860s, sixteen boys played what was then called the "Boston game"--an early version of football in the United States. The boys were largely the sons of upper-class Boston Brahmins, and they lived through the transformative periods of the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Gilded Age. Later as they grew old, in the 1920s, a handful of them orchestrated a series of commemorative events about their boyhood game. Benefitting from elite networks developed through the city's social and educational institutions, including Harvard University, they donated artifacts (such as an oddly shaped, battered black ball) to museums, deposited self-penned histories into libraries and archives, and erected bronze and stone memorials, all to elevate themselves as the inventors of American football (and later, by extension, soccer). This book is a revised edition of previous book.This revised book takes the reader on a journey through the history of football (rugby league) in the Western and Southern districts of NSW from 1920-1976 and from its inaugural beginning through the golden years in country NSW. It encompasses groups 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15.Much of the content has been sourced from newspaper reports and photographs of players and teams throughout the decades. It is divided into three sections.The first section consists of a summary of each decade and includes the great moments for teams and players. Records were made with some still remaining. Great players and coaches emerged such as Ian Walsh, Bob Weir, John Hobby, Leo Nosworthy, Don Parish, Tony Paskins, Barry Beath, Norm Brown, Earl Harrison and Ken McMullen.Records were made and remain in groups 10, 11 and 14. Baradine won 5 consecutive group 14 premierships (1951-1955). Eugowra won 5 consecutive group 11 premierships (1963-1967) and Oberon won 7 consecutive group 10 premierships (1960-1967).The second section highlights players who aspired to represent their region, Southern and Western being predominant with both producing a number of representative players. This book highlights the years and successes of the teams and players. Southern and Western Division teams played England, New Zealand and French touring teams from the 1920s -1970s. Country trials were also held to select the country Firsts and Seconds teams to play their city rivals each year. Great players emerged from the country teams with some selected to play for Australia. Also included is the 1974 Amco Cup.The third section focusses in particular on the Maher Cup, which was initiated in the southern region and the Jack Hore Cup which was founded in the western region.The Maher cup produced some of the greatest rugby league players including Eric Weissel and Jack Kingston who both went on to represent Australia. It covers the inaugural cup challenge (1920) to its final challenge (1971) and its retirement to Tumut.The Jack Hore Memorial Gold Cup was instigated by the Canowindra town's people after the sudden death of Jack Hore, an extremely talented sportsman who played cricket and football for Canowindra. The first challenge match was in 1926 where Canowindra defeated Young. Rex Norman was captain coach for Canowindra in its earlier cup challenges. Included in the book are stories of the challenges and events through the years of its existence.The Johnnie Walker and Clayton Cups are also examined. The Johnnie Walker Challenge Cup was initiated in 1922 at a meeting in Dubbo and came to rest in the 1980s.The Clayton Cup is highlighted as an award of supremacy for outstanding country rugby league teams.Cobar won the award in 1971 and 1972.Throughout all sections there are numerous pictures and photos depicting teams, individual players, action shots, cartoons, souvenir programmes and trophies. There has been a number of updated photos and stories included in this revised edition.Rugby league football is more than just a thrilling spectacle of 26 players demonstrating their skills on the field. The principal strength of rugby league is that it gives ordinary people the opportunity to show their talents and skills.
