When Minor League Baseball Almost Went Bust
When Minor League Baseball Almost WentBust is about the epic transformation the minor leagues underwent from the end of World War II to the onset of America's space race with the Soviet Union. By 1949, the minors' boom would reach its peak, with 59 leagues and 448 teams, but their downfall was just around the corner. This book, three years in the making, with contributions from 39 SABR members, contains stories about minor-league teams, individuals, and leagues that thrived, struggled, and mostly went defunct, because of changing cultural and economic trends beyond their controlfrom 1946 through 1963. The fabled Newark Bears of the International League announced after the 1949 season that they would leave New Jersey for Springfield, Massachusetts, because of poor attendance. This was a sign of things to come as fans in medium-sized cities began fleeing to the suburbs. Few minor-league teams made money during this era. Most teams traveled by bus, and owners, scrimping and saving, compromised the safety of their players by buying buses from their second or third owners, some beyond their normal life span. There were many reports of carbon monoxide poisonings and brake malfunctions. Tragic accidents in 1946 and 1948 claimed the lives of 14 players. There were bright spots and historic feats, of course. Jackie Robinson would integrate an affiliated team for the first time when he played for the Montreal Royals in 1946. Phenom Ron Necciai, playing for Bristol of the Appalachian League, accomplished a pitching feat on May 21, 1952, that most likely will never be challenged-pitching a nine-inning no-hitter in which he struck out all 27 batters. Unfortunately for Necciai, his arm went dead the next season, ending his career.By 1963, hundreds of minor-league teams had folded and minor-league baseball was at a critical crossroads. The American and National Leagues couldn't afford to let such a key resource for player development disappear. After extensive meetings, the AL and NL introduced a Player Development plan in which each major-league team would provide and pay the salaries of a full player and coaching roster to at least five minor-league teams. This stabilized the minors and set the way the minors would operate for the rest of the twentieth century and until 2020.
How the Old Fella Done It
The classic Grand Banks Dory became the most-built wooden rowboat in history between the mid-1800s and early 1900s. It's classic form was ideal for codfishing on the Grand Banks, and each boatbuilding town evolved it's own methods and traditions. Today only one unbroken string of dory builders reminas--Milford Buchanan in Shelburne, Nova Scotis is still building the Shelburne Dory the way the Old Fellas taught him. This is his story.

A Giant Among Giants
Willie McCovey, known as "Stretch," played Major League Baseball from 1959 to 1980, most notably as a member of the San Francisco Giants for nineteen seasons. A fearsome left-handed power hitter, McCovey ranked second only to Babe Ruth in career home runs among left-handed batters and tied for eighth overall with Ted Williams at the time of his retirement. He was a six-time All-Star, three-time National League home run champion, and 1969 league MVP, and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 in his first year of eligibility. Known as a dead-pull line drive hitter, McCovey was called "the scariest hitter in baseball" by pitcher Bob Gibson. Born in Mobile, Alabama, McCovey encountered daunting hurdles, such as Jim Crow laws that prevented him from playing organized ball as a youth and playing for Major League managers such as Tom Sheehan and Alvin Dark, who took a dim view of his abilities. But neither that nor other difficulties on the field--the platooning, the slights, the unrelenting injuries--seemed to affect McCovey, as he remained grateful to be playing baseball. McCovey was the most treasured Bay Area icon of all, a humble, approachable superstar who earned the admiration of seemingly everyone he encountered. McCovey's life wasn't measured in his home run and RBI totals, though those were impressive. His greatest significance lay in the warmth and respect he extended and which others reciprocated. These elements elevated McCovey to a pantheon where relatively few athletes reside. He remains synonymous with not just the team he ennobled but also the city he represented. In A Giant among Giants, the first biography of McCovey, who passed away in 2018 at the age of eighty, Chris Haft tells the story of one of baseball's best hitters and most-beloved players.
Jim Londos
The most famous active athlete in the world during the Great Depression was not Babe Ruth, Sonja Henie or Babe Didrikson. It was a determined Greek immigrant who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean as a 15-year-old to escape a demanding father and start a life abroad. Jim Londos slept in railcars and firehouses to make ends meet and quickly found refuge on the mat. Combining an Old World work ethic with a flair for the dramatic, Londos overcame skeptics and antagonists to become pro wrestling's greatest star, an international celebrity who walked with presidents, prime ministers and the common man. He was responsible for keeping wrestling alive during the Depression and representing achievement to ethnic minorities, underdogs and women, all of whom he attracted in record numbers. This complete biography of Jim Londos tells the story of the first great immigrant athlete, a man who rescued the soiled sport of wrestling when it was down for the count, and brought hope and inspiration to his countrymen and millions worldwide.
Bernas Estocadas
The combative traditions of the Philippines are many and varied. Although these traditions share a focus on the stick and the blade, there are often subtle differences between them, that reflect diverse regional histories, and the unique experience of their founders. The Bernas Estocadas system of Filipino Martial Arts was developed by Grandmaster William Bernas, and registers the influence of both the informal but practical Wedo (Oido) traditions he originally learned from his Grandfather and Uncle, and the systematic and structured Pekiti Tirsia (or "close quarters") methods he studied with Grandmaster Hortencio Navales, under the direct tutelage of his foremost student, Romeo Postrano, in the Navales Arnis Clinic. The Bernas Estocadas system incorporates the study of both edged and impact weapons, and unarmed methods of defending oneself against an armed opponent. The core methods of the system reflect the nuances of the combative traditions of the Negros Occidental region where Grandmaster Bernas was born and engaged in the study of the Filipino Martial Arts.In this first volume of a planned multi-volume series, the foundational methods of the system are addressed, including a strong focus on its core offensive and defensive techniques, and the footwork that makes the Bernas Estocadas system perfectly geared for handling multiple opponents. The methods are explained and demonstrated at different points in the book using either the Bast籀n (stick), or Tal穩bong (sword). This book will be of interest to anyone seeking knowledge of authentic Filipino Martial Arts, particular those interested in developing a greater understanding of arts hailing from the Negros region of the Visayas. With the book written by the Grandmaster and two of his Manunudlo (certified instructors), and all techniques demonstrated by the Grandmaster himself, this will certainly be an indispensable reference for anyone studying, or considering the study of, the Bernas Estocadas system.

Creative and Inclusive Research Methods in Sport, Physical Activity and Health

Cricket, Capitalism and Class
This ambitious new study argues that not only is the story of cricket inescapably entwined with that of capitalism, but that the game provides a unique lens with which to understand the history, development, exigencies and contradictions of capitalist political economy. From the aristocratic capture of the artisan's game to the commodified entertainment of private T20 leagues, the story of cricket has been told against the background of capitalism. Cricket was the gentlemanly vanguard of the English-led British empire which forged the first iteration of international capitalism that was reliant upon a political and commercial partnership between rulers and the ruled, and today it speaks to the productive tension between the emergence of the Asian century and the power of American cultural imperialism. Reading capitalism as a cultural, economic and political system, this book explores the relationship between cricket and capitalism and illuminates many of the most important themes in contemporary sport studies, such as class, race, gender, globalisation, nationalism, neoliberalism, commodification and migration. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in sport history, the sociology of sport, global political economy, political theory or cultural studies.
Indigenous, Traditional, and Folk Sports
This is the first book to focus on indigenous, traditional, and folk sports and sporting cultures. It examines the significance of sporting cultures that have survived the emergence and diffusion of western sports and have carved out a unique position not only in spite of modernity but also in response to it.Presenting case studies from around the world, including from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, this book draws on multidisciplinary work from sociology, anthropology, history, cultural studies, and political science, exploring key themes in the social sciences including nationalism, identity, decolonisation, and gender. From Turkish oil wrestling, kabaddi in South Asia, Iroquois lacrosse, to wushu and sumo in East Asia and various European traditional sports, these sporting practices continue to capture the indigenous imagination on the margins of the western hegemonic sport complex. Situated in the fissures between the local, the national, and the global; between the archaic and the modern; and between ritual and record, they inhabit a liminal space of transformation as they assume new cultural and political meanings, offering important perspectives on the complexities and contradictions of modernity. The volume's decolonial perspective lies in its promotion of indigenous and subaltern worldviews through their traditional movement cultures on the margins of the western hegemonic sport complex. This is a fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in sport, nationalism, Indigenous studies, heritage and folklore studies, anthropology, social and cultural history, or globalisation.
Football Fandom and Identity in the 21st Century
This book uncovers the elusive phenomenon of football fan identities by using a combination of comparative analysis and triangulation of data obtained through discourse analysis of online message boards and survey research in four European country/league contexts and in-depth interviews conducted in eight select fan scenes. The book illustrates that politically relevant developments are often set in motion in supposedly peripheral social fields, and that identities are adapted and transboundary linkages can be established and nurtured through the game of football. The book will be of interest to researchers, scholars and students of Sociology, Political Science, Sport Studies, European Studies and International Relations.
Equity Crowdfunding in Sports Clubs
This is the first book to focus on crowdfunding in sport. Crowdfunding is an important new financial instrument that is becoming more popular with sports organisations, and this book examines the research evidence for crowdfunding and considers how it might be successfully implemented.Presenting international cases and data, including from European football, the book explains how crowdfunding campaigns have to be fully integrated with strategic marketing plans and require a solid understanding of the needs and motivations of potential investors, consumers, and fans. The book sets out a theoretical framework for applying strategic marketing in the context of crowdfunding in sports clubs, introduces the key characteristics of the sports crowdfunding market and funders' behaviours in the crowdfunding campaigns of sports clubs, examines the market segments of the campaigns' funders, and presents recommendations for developing marketing-mix programs to target them. This is important reading for any researcher, advanced student, or practitioner with an interest in sport business, sport marketing, sport finance, consumer behaviour in sport, or entrepreneurship, innovation, or technology in sport. The Open Access version of this book, available at www. taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
Boxing, Narrative and Culture
Boxing, Narrative and Culture: Critical Perspectives is the first interdisciplinary response to the dominant boxing narratives that are produced, performed, and circulated in commercial boxing culture. This collection includes global perspectives on boxing. It highlights the diverse range of bodies and communities that engage with boxing practices but are oftentimes overlooked and overwritten by popular narrative tropes and misconceptions of the sport. These interdisciplinary and global perspectives engage with boxing's shared narrative resources, offering new readings and insights on how and what boxing performs and for whom. The contributors to this collection are academics, artists, amateur boxers, and/or coaches who provide a culture critique of boxing. The work shows how boxing practices are performed and channelled by individuals and communities who access and utilise boxing culture as a means of physical enquiry, political statement, and community building. These contributions challenge the notion that boxing is a sport reserved for masculine bodies adorned as heroes, warriors, or victims of the sport.Exploring key themes in socio-cultural studies including gender, race, community, media, and performance, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in physical culture, sport studies, cultural studies, gender studies, cultural geography, critical race theory, labour studies, performance studies, or media studies.
Sports Career Transition
There is a high incidence of distress in retiring athletes but very little guidance to understand why and what to do about it. Athletes, their families and coaches need this book as a Sports Career Transition guide. It will help top-level athletes, district and college-level players and may also assist young people who quit youth sports due to unrealised goals.Whether withdrawing by choice, dropped from a league team, forced by injury, or having unrealistic goals, the transition phase of a sporting life needs to be recognised.Emotional and mental suffering after retirement is caused by a sense of loss, grief that feels like a bereavement. The grief is a non-death loss though. Loss of relationships, cheering crowds, loss of purpose, reduced physical exhilaration, missing team companionship. The intensity of the pain of grief diminishes over time but because of the pleasure and purposefulness of sport, fond nostalgic memories may trigger an outburst of sadness many years later. This book is not about 'getting over it' but it is about coping with the adjustment to life away from sport. Retiring from sport is an opportunity to begin another dynamic life. The uncertain future can be scary. It may take months and years of adaptation, everyone is different, but you will need support. It is a positive time for growth and development. This book explains reasons for a problematic retirement and practical actions to prepare for leaving sport before 'the final whistle'. Supportive help is sometimes available for elite athletes but not for the majority of sportsmen and women. The help available is limited to financial advice, work career training and rudimentary counselling. This much needed guide fills in missing information about Sports Career Transition, written by world champion Australian swimmer and cultural scholar Dr Shane Gould. Based on social and academic research of Athlete Career Transitions and her own sport retirement transitions, that was unresolved for many years due to an absence of debriefing.

It's a long road
What's the relation between Tokyo and cod fish with garlic potato mash? How can we combine New York and endorphins? What is in common between a marathon and a burger? How can a running podcast be linked to six metropolitan cities? You will find answers to these questions and many more in the book "It's a long road" by George Savvidis. In an arresting and effortless storytelling, he shares his experiences, his personal battles, and the "marathons" he has accomplished so far in his running journey. This journey has not been a smooth one, and for this exact reason fellow runners can relate. It brings forward the magic, but also the difficulties of running at its true dimensions. In the book "It's a long road", the writer, who is also the producer of the homonymous podcast, is describing in every detail the great moments, but also all the troubles, stress and misfortunes that he experienced from starting to run, till the point he achieved his dream to become a Six Star Finisher, that is to complete the six largest marathons globally.Having accomplished unique running experiences, he is rightfully able to urge us: "Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and never stop dreaming!"
Body Factory
A university's athletic training room is meant to care for and heal college athletes and ensure they are receiving the help they need. Although sports medicine staff members are sincere in their goal of centering athletes and providing the best healthcare possible, organizational constraints affect their approach. Chief among them is the pressure sports medicine staff members feel to keep athletes from profit-generating sports healthy enough to perform. Body Factory enters an NCAA Division I athletic training room to examine the disconnect between what the NCAA states as its goal of athlete healthcare and what is actually happening. Kaitlin Pericak conducts observations in this space and interviews injured athletes and sports medicine staff members to show how institutional control over "best interests" often ends up exploiting the individual athlete. The influences at work are part of a neoliberal paradigm that explains why interest in an athlete's care is greatly diminished once they are injured and can no longer play. Body Factory considers how race, gender, and health before and after injury are deciding factors in these university training centers. The bureaucratic organization has a goal of maintaining power to generate profit, and Pericak shows this is almost always at the expense of the athlete.

Five Gallon Bucket
When Jack was the basketball coach in Elk City during his second year (1966-67), he received the Coach of the Year award in Western Oklahoma. Jack loved basketball, but he wasn't always good at it. In fourth grade, he made his first attempt at a free throw and failed. For his birthday, he asked for a basketball. He realized he didn't have a basket when he shot outside.Out in the garage was an old rusty 5-gallon bucket-back then, they were made of metal, short and wide. Jack quickly cut out the bottom with a chisel and hammer, creating a basket, and the rest is history.Basketball was in his bones and his dreams. He played in college at Pittsburg State University. At 5'11 3/4" tall, Jack was told he had the skills but not the height to play pro basketball. Instead, he pursued coaching and became a high school basketball coach. In his short story, Five Gallon Bucket, Jack shares his experiences and thoughts on the sport, particularly from the lens of a basketball coach. His endearing musings give basketball lovers a glimpse into this retired coach's story of how the five-gallon bucket gave him purpose.

My Triathlon Family
I wrote this book to share with the world how much this sport means to me. I look forward to reading this children's book to my son Glen. My wife and I cherish our son and can't wait till the day we can do a triathlon together as a family. If you have children or not, I hope you enjoy this children's book and the message it conveys. This children's book reflects a relatively new and growing sport. Actually, it is more than a sport, it is a lifestyle. This lifestyle is the sport of triathlon. I have been involved in the sport since the summer of 1995. I got involved through one of my brothers. Having been blessed with pretty good genetics in regards to athletics, I signed up for my first triathlon, Mrs. T's triathlon in Chicago, IL. Having a reckless arrogance towards sports, I did not train for this event. I figured I would adapt to this new sport as easily as all the others. On race morning I was ready to go. I waited ankle deep, at the front of a pack of 100 swimmers, in Lake Michigan for the starting horn to blow. The horn went off, and I was gone. I was caught in about 20 seconds and proceeded to be kicked, elbowed and shoved as I was swam over. I tried to regain my composure but the pummeling continued. I started to get a little concerned and began looking for a lifeboat. I spotted one and struggled in that direction. The life guard manning this boat recognized my conflict and hauled me into his boat. After rescuing three more people, we were dropped off on shore, disqualified but allowed to finish the race if we desired to. A little shaken, I quickly gained respect for this new sport. Back in the 1990's, this sport was just seen as something that "triathletes" (whomever these people were) did. Where did these people come from and why would they put themselves through such punishment. I came away from my first experience with the sport of triathlon feeling, like no pun intended, a "fish out of water." Where I once felt confident and well rounded, I was now uneasy and wondering if I should walk away from this new sport. Looking back, I can see that the sport of triathlon demands some of the same qualities as life. Triathlon is no longer for the super fit, or the gifted athletes. It is for the young and the old, heavy and thin, healthy and sick and even those with a handicap. Everyone has there own reason for competing in this sport. Something different drives each of them. Perhaps triathlon may mimic some of life's struggles and they are here to conquer them. Triathlon demands diversity, motivation, intensity, strength, patience, endurance and the ability to transition. The sport of triathlon has changed my life in many ways. I have conquered. There are so many different types of triathletes. There are slow and steady triathletes. People racing others in their age group. People racing the clock. And of course, the pro's of the sport. The diversity of this sport is what makes it so great. As the years go by, I have been able to appreciate so much more about life through this sport. It is not about the race, it is about the journey getting to the race. Enjoy the journey, it may be the best part. The race may just be the icing on the cake! I have been able to learn to enjoy the journey. This journey has become a lifestyle. I met my wife at a triathlon in 2001. Our paths crossed as she is active in marathons and was volunteering at this triathlon with some friends. We were married the next year and welcomed our first child soon after. We continue our triathlon lifestyle with our son. He really enjoys riding in the baby carrier behind dad's bike. Our son loves to be read to. He enjoys turning the pages and pointing to the pictures. My wife and I noticed that there are very few children's books about the sports that make up triathlon, let alone triathl
