Brick City Grudge Match
On June 10, 1948, the eyes of the sporting world were focused on a minor league ballpark in Newark, New Jersey--the unlikely venue of a much-anticipated rubber match between the two men at the top of boxing's prestigious middleweight division, Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano. They had met in the ring twice before, each winning one bout. In their third fight, Zale, a clever and powerful puncher, hoped to regain his title from Graziano, a knock-out artist six years his junior. This book tells the story of the greatest middleweight trilogy of boxing's Golden Age, a championship battle Newark hoped would catalyze brighter days for a city rife with political corruption and organized crime and grappling with the beginning of deindustrialization.

Bicycling
Home alone in the summer during a 1958 recession, with no job, and wanting to do something exciting to show for the quarter break, a nineteen-year-old, in this true account, decides to explore the lush and inviting Northwest. Launching right away into a questionable pursuit, he decides to follow the lure to Canada, Washington and Oregon, usung his most economical choice of transportation--his brother's bicycle-an old three-speed pedal bike--despite it having only front wheel brakes, no lights, and only first gear working, Since none of his invited friends are permitted to accompany him on such a dubious jaunt, and ignoring several concerned warnings of certain danger along the way, he nevertheless straps some quickly put-together supplies for a month's solo venture-not forgetting his mother's antique 1907 Brownie Box Camera, and $75 for food and film, then starts heading out on a bright and early August morning. Though faced with many trying, surprising, and some terrifying challenges during the following month, his only tools for the entire experience are a naieve sense of indestructible confidence, determination, and a trust that when the time came, he would be given whatever help was needed. It was an adventure few had taken back then, and one that probably even fewer are likely to experience today, given the circumstances. Readers may find themselves riveted to the pages right to the very end. One reader said of the book, "You need to contact Steven Spielberg, and get this story made into a movie"!
The Ruthless Gene
Horse racing meets Michael Crichton in this tense thriller about genetics and epigenetics - human and equine. In 2015, renowned equine geneticist Fiona Buckley's research lab was robbed, set ablaze and her security guard murdered. Just as her husband, paralysed former champion jockey Johnny Buckley, was dying from a particularly savage and mystifying form of cancer. Fiona doesn't see the link, despite her husband's deathbed warnings. Only Johnny knows that his death is the culmination of a chain of events which started with an outsider winning the Irish Derby in 2005, the very race which put Johnny in a wheelchair. In the high-stakes game of breeding and selling elite racehorses worth millions, cheating, intimidation and murder are acceptable for those desperate to gain an advantage. What if Fiona's work is a prelude to a revolution in genetic science? And what was her husband actually doing while he worked for a horsefeed company? She must be careful who she trusts and revisit her husband's troubled life to untangle the web of events, motives and genetic discoveries that affect not just racehorses, but every person on the planet.
Walking for Creative Recovery
Sooner or later, most of us get stuck. Feel stuck. Our creativity in crisis... lost, blocked, overwhelmed by work, family, illness. How to find or recover that creative edge? How to get unstuck? For the authors, it began with cancer and stretched into the pandemic. One primarily a writer and the other a painter, they decide to walk together, to talk, write, feed back, reflect and repeat, again and again. They explore trust, openness, motherhood, their willingness to take risks and be exposed, and the particular insights they bring as women. Along the way, they walk and map their way back to creative life. This is their story, but more than that--it's a map and a handbook for anyone who is feeling stuck. Whether or not you have had a creative practice before (writing/ painting/ making/ crafting), this book will help you find your way into creative expression. The authors offer creative tasks and suggestions in each chapter, and ideas and structures to get you going. But most important, they offer warmth, friendship, and inspiration from their own shared vulnerability, struggle, setbacks, and muddy walking.

Conifa
This is not a book about football. Well, it is, in a sense, but it's also a book about overcoming the odds. About being rejected from the sporting mainstream, but fighting back. About training for an international tournament with only a single ball. It's about representing one country, but being forced to live your life in another. About finding sporting representation as a rank outsider; overcoming political superpowers to find a place. It's about scrambling a team together in a few weeks to represent millions of people, or fronting a multi-continental organization on a near-bankrupt shoestring because it's that important to your indigenous reindeer-herding Scandinavian ethnic minority that they have their own global, international outlet. Those last two paragraphs probably sound like hyperbole. I couldn't quite believe it either, but every word of them is real. Follow me on a journey down a footballing rabbit hole, where sport and politics mingle in glorious, positive harmony. This is CONIFA

Miles to go before I sleep
The Race Around Ireland is a non-stop 2,200 km bicycle race that circumnavigates the island of Ireland anti-clockwise. It is held every year at the start of September and can be approached as a solo competitor, as a team of two, four or eight. In January of 2014, a group of cyclists from Maynooth Students for Charity Cycling Club decided to take on the challenge. They were told it was the toughest endurance race in Europe. This is the story, as told through the recollections of the participants, of how a bunch of Average Joes conquered the race and set a new Irish record time. It is a story of great adventure, of beating the odds, of battling inner demons and exceeding expectations. Ultimately it is a story of teamwork and lifelong friendship, because that's what won the race.
2-Mile Open Water Swim with Hurdles
This book tells of the trials and tribulations of an English expatriate who set himself an endurance sporting goal just for the hell of it. Living in Bulgaria made the challenge even more demanding and was seen by many as a quintessential eccentric English quirk, pointless and mingled with madness. The goal was to complete a 2-mile open water swimming event based some 3000 kilometres away in London's Hyde Park. The biggest hurdle was not being able to swim with an acute fear of water. Not to be ignored here is age. It was perhaps getting old that motivated him more than anything as opposed to just limp and fade away into the lethargy of old age. The challenge seemed an impossible feat initially with many hurdles that had to be overcome. This was not just from starting out as a non-swimmer fearful of water, but from other logistic issues over the 6-month journey. Getting through the challenge needed lots of determination, strong resolve not least bloody-mindedness.

Cuchillo Corvo Combat Knife of Chile
The traditional Corvo is a bladed weapon that is popularly regarded as the national knife of Chile. The Corvo knife was so uniformly carried by Chileans that it saw wide use in Chile's 19th century War of Tndependence from Bolivia. So significant was the Corvo's prevalence in the war that the knife was officially adopted by the Chilean military. Today, the Special Commandos adhere to a uniquely-developed curriculum for the combative use of the Corvo, which includes its proper deployment in confronting enemy opponents, whether unarmed, or wielding knives, entrenching tools, or bayonets. In this memoir, he celebrates his love for riding and bicycles, which gave him the freedom to ride to the park and hang out with his friends as a child and the ability to dream as an adult. He focuses on a ride he began planning in spring 2007 from Boise, Idaho, to Denver, Colorado-one that his doctor did not want him to take alone. That's because Bahniuk suffers from Parkinson's disease, which makes it difficult to talk, walk, eat, and control his fine motor skills. The Speed Merchants
The Speed Merchants tells the story of Michael Keyser's racing and film experience, across the U.S. and Europe, from 1969 through 1972. He relives what it was like to watch the great Ferrari 512s and Porsche 917s that dominated the world manufacturer's series in 1970; to follow Mark Donohue and Roger Penske as they shook up the Trans-Am through Canada and the United States; to see McLaren's hold on the Can-Am finally ended. The Speed Merchants details the successes and failures of such drivers as Vic Elford, Brian Redman, Jo Siffert, Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Stewart; and racing at such tracks as Daytona, Sebring, Indianapolis, the Targa Florio, the Nurburgring, Monaco and Le Mans. When first published in 1973, The Speed Merchants was hailed among other books on racing as the standard by which other works should be judged. Now, the author has totally revised the book, more than doubling the number of photographs and adding a personal dimension that could only be brought by someone in his unique position as driver, photographer, and filmmaker. With brilliant full color photography and evocative prose, The Speed Merchants brings to vivid life the sights and sounds of a lost era."

Living Through the Hoop
A hopeful and inspiring treatise on the power of playing basketball When high school basketball player LeBron James was selected as the top pick in the National Basketball Association draft of 2003, the hopes of a half-million high school basketball players soared. If LeBron could go straight from high school to the NBA, why couldn't they? Such is the allure of basketball for so many young African American men. Unfortunately, the reality is that their chances of ever playing basketball at the professional, or even college, level are infinitesimal. In Living Through the Hoop, Reuben A. Buford May tells the absorbing story of the hopes and struggles of one high school basketball team. With a clear passion for the game, May grabs readers with both hands and pulls them onto the hardwood, going under the hoop and inside the locker room. May spent seven seasons as an assistant coach of the Northeast High School Knights in Northeast, Georgia. We meet players like Larique and Pooty Cat, hard-working and energetic young men, willing to play and practice basketball seven days a week and banking on the unlimited promise of the game. And we meet Coach Benson, their unorthodox, out-spoken, and fierce leader, who regularly coached them to winning seasons, twice going to the state tournaments Elite Eight championships. Beyond the wins and losses, May provides a portrait of the players' hopes and aspirations, their home lives, and the difficulties they face in living in a poor and urban area--namely, the temptations of drugs and alcohol, violence in their communities, run-ins with the police, and unstable family lives. We learn what it means to become a man when you live in places that define manhood by how tough you can be, how many women you can have, and how much money you can hustle. May shows the powerful role that the basketball team can play in keeping these kids straight, away from street-life, focused on completing high school, and possibly even attending college. Their stories, and the double-edged sword of hoop dreams, is at the heart of this compelling story about young African American men's struggle to find their way in an often grim world.
