Psyche of the Injured Athlete
Psyche of the Injured Athlete: the Unspoken Truths presents an intimate look at what happens to athletes who suffer a debilitating, sport career-ending injury. The athlete's identity, the sports family, the daily discipline and work to become an elite athlete are all gone. The psyche of the athlete is damaged, and there is little in place to help them find healing and wholeness. The author, Dr. Laura Miele, PhD, describes her own journey as an elite basketball player who suffered a back injury that ended her promising career and left her on the sidelines. She shares the utter devastation, the consultations with numerous medical professionals searching for a way to rehabilitate and continue to play, and the realization that she needed to move on from her dream. She is an expert in fitness, sports and recreation with a PhD in Sports Psychology, and she brings her understanding of athletic identity, sports injury rehabilitation, and career-ending injury to bear on the lack of mental health resources available to injured athletes and to those who care for them. This book is intended to help coaches, parents, medical practitioners, and the injured athletes themselves acknowledge the need for the body, mind and spirit all to be considered when evaluating the health and wellbeing of the injured athlete. The seven comprehensive chapters cover Miele's story, the role of sport in the identity of elite athletes, the loneliness and despair of an injured, depressed athlete, and finally her detailed solutions to help the injured athlete cope with and move beyond their injury, to transition out of sports and into a successful career and life. The insights from coaches and athletes sprinkled throughout the book corroborate and expand on the topics of athletics, injury, loss and recovery. Dr. Miele notes that athletes have everything they need to heal and move on if they are given the appropriate support. They are disciplined, they know how to work hard, and they are team players. With the right mental health resources and guidance, they can integrate their love of their sport into their life and come back strong.Whether you are a parent, coach, doctor or athlete, this book is a must read. Better analysis and treatment are critical to the mental health of elite athletes, and you owe it to yourself or the athlete you care for to better understand the psyche of the injured athlete.
Women’s Rugby in Germany. Stereotypes and Values
Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Health - Sport - Sport Sociology, grade: 1,7, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Englisches Seminar), course: Kulturwissenschaften, language: English, abstract: Im Zuge dieser Arbeit soll Frauenrugby in Deutschland im kulturwissenschaftlichen Sinne n瓣her beleuchtet werden.

Clash of the Little Giants
In the late 1890s, when boxing rivaled the popularity of baseball, George Dixon and Terry McGovern were among its most famous practitioners. Their paths first crossed in 1900 in what is widely considered the most significant featherweight bout in history. Both men were fighters who died young under distressing circumstances. Both were products of a burgeoning industrial society and a cult of masculinity, at a time when prizefighting's adherents and opponents were in a constant tug-of-war. This book tells the full story, with a fascinating cast of characters including imperious manager/promoter Tom O'Rourke, World Welterweight Champion Barbados Joe Walcott, and Tammany Hall bigwig Timothy "Big Tim" Sullivan, whose invisible hand made New York the epicenter of boxing in the 1890s.

Charles Nelson's School Of Self-defense
Practical Self-Defense Anyone Can Learn, Taught By a Master of Street CombatAfter serving as a Marine in World War II, legendary close-quarter combatives teacher and martial arts practitioner Charles Nelson opened his own School of Self Defense in New York City. Every day, New Yorkers faced the threat of violent attacks, assaults, and muggings. Recognizing that danger, Nelson knew that average people would benefit from learning how to protect themselves. For five decades he taught practical fighting techniques for real-world situations. Nelson's famous evade-and-strike method taught evasion and avoidance first, de-escalation next, and then strategies for self-defense and striking back-when necessary.Combining the popular "Little Red Manual" and "Little Gray Manual" booklets into a single volume, this comprehensive, illustrated book provides a complete picture of Nelson's fighting techniques. Drawing from his personal experience in unarmed, hand-to-hand combat and representing the skills he taught in person, it contains a wide variety of simple and effective martial arts moves, ranging from basic blocks and traps to advanced swivel punches and counter-strikes. A foreword by a WWII combatives expert and fighting instructor Carl Cestari, one of Nelson's former pupils, provides a colorful backstory about "Charlie" Nelson's life and techniques. Appealing to both experienced martial arts students and beginners, this is a must-have classic for every martial artist, and self-defense students and instructors. Studying the moves in this manual could literally mean the difference between life or death."The volumes of letters written to Charlie by former pupils, expressing gratitude for teaching these life-saving tactics and methods, attest to the efficacy of the system." -Carl Cestari, from the Foreword

American Sport in the Shadow of a Pandemic
Warren Buffett once opined that "only when the tide rolls out do you discover who's been swimming naked." In a similar vein, American Sport in the Shadow of a Pandemic focuses on how communication practices, structures, and principles change when a key locus--sport--has much of its cultural and political-economic power disrupted. How intertwined is the economic viability of an American collegiate institution to the communicative enactment of the regular staging of collegiate sports? What proportion of a sports media contract is for the competition itself, as opposed to the documentation of fans being "fanatic" as they witness contests live and in-person? Who and what is deemed most disposable, and how do such decisions play out for athletes of different genders, races, and abilities? Questions such as these form the core foci of this volume. As many have observed, out of crisis comes opportunity. In this instance, this volume provides an opportunity for leading scholars of communication and sport to consider which principles should be rethought or reconceptualized based on the effects of the pandemic on our culture, politics, and economy.

Fanhood to Manhood
If we want it bad enough, if we yell loud enough, if we concentrate hard enough, maybe we'll give our boys the edge they need. Regardless, we're all in. Seeing through their eyes, feeling through their muscles, we risk defeat alongside them, and the payoff is an experience bordering on the religious. The team affirms who we are. Their tradition = our tradition. Their reputation = our reputation. Their record = our record. Let it be known through our clothes, our ringtone, our Facebook posts: we are true fans for life.Ah, and the games themselves. The anticipation, the triumph, the group euphoria! That's the high we chase. That's the thrill that vindicates our loyalty. That's why we're fans. However, there's a dark side. When cheering for a team causes more anxiety than joy, when it affects how we show up for those we love, when it becomes an excuse for destructive behavior (binge spending, binge drinking, binge raging), when our obsession with the team's journey comes at the expense of our own journey - that's when an innocent hobby has turned toxic.Once upon a time, this was me. My mood, my esteem and my testosterone levels depended on the athletic performance of strangers. (Your testosterone levels, too, says science - see chapter 21.) I'd celebrate when they won and pout when they lost, sometimes for weeks at a time. Immersed in the delusion that their games had something to do with me, some of my highest thrills and deepest satisfaction came through my team. (Sound familiar?)While I chose this life, I didn't get it by accident. A billion-dollar industry had been quietly partnering with research psychologists to make me watch more, care more, spend more. Whatever it took to boost my "Psychological Commitment to Team" score (yes, that's a thing), to move me up the "Fan Involvement Ladder" (from suspect to customer to raving fan), to ensure I frequently "BIRGed" (Basked In Reflective Glory) and seldom "CORFed" (Cut Off Reflective Failure) - their marketers had no qualms against doing it.Today, five years clean, whether my old team wins or loses is of little concern. No longer beholden to the scam, I do my own thing, find satisfaction and excitement through my own adventures, and am happier for it.Rehab wasn't easy, especially in our sports-crazed culture. But the core realization that made it possible was this: sports teams are mere businesses, fans are mere customers, and life's too short to spend it a glorified cheerleader. As you read the story of my degeneration into toxic fanaticism in Part I: Fanhood, consider parallels in your own journey. We may not share the same sport or the same team. But we do share the same basic needs, and I'm betting the sports industry manipulated yours in a similar way.As you absorb the tough love of Part II: Puberty, remember why you're here. One too many weekends wasted? A brokenhearted family member? A sense that the squealing and whining are beneath you? Whatever the case, don't be too hard on yourself, and know that better days are ahead. And as you begin your new, triumphant chapter with Part III: Manhood, remain strong. Know that your internal "bad wolf" will try to derail your recovery (Turn the game on... Just check the score... You know you wanna). "Kenny Kool-Aids" will emerge with free tickets and promises of championships just around the corner (It's our year - I can feel it!). Resist. Remain vigilant. And begin steeling your will now, for relapse triggers will appear from within, as well as from without, guaranteed.Fanhood may have served you at one time. But now is the time to put down the pom-poms and throw away that frilly pink skirt.Welcome to the path of fanhood to manhood

ARA’s Untold Story
From the Book: Like every human endeavor, it starts with one or more individuals who dare do something extreme, something they feel is worth personal sacrifice even if it means being the object of derision, even hostility. This is the way skateboarding began in the heart of Colorado's Rocky Mountains back in 1975-1976.
Embodiment, Identity and Disability Sport

Managing Sport Across Borders

The Biggest Regatta, Kerala Vallam Kali
This book narrates a unique and exotic paddling regatta held in folks festival style, by over 900 farming communities in coastal Kerala, India, in great passion, fervour, and intense competition of more than 100 boats, and 5000 paddlers, attracting half a million zealous on-site spectators, as well as potentially over 2 Billion TV Viewers, half the globe around. In this context, it reveals many of the unexplained senses and sensibilities of an ancient culture and its traditions. There is a deeper meaning and surprising sagacity beneath its appearance. The culture, traditions, rituals, festivities, myths, and mythology are fathomed with plausible scientific explanations, and/or logical deductions. Implicitly and explicitly, they tend to compare oriental, and occidental philosophies, and attitudes. The race, festivities, the marine warfare legacy of each category of the race boats, the live video production & transmission with behind the scene activities, and the thrilling running commentary are a few of the many highlights. The traditional way to build the boats using natural resources and the resourceful architecture codes dating back to the Vedic times are elaborately explained through its entire process "from a tree in the rainforest to a floating masterpiece!". Along the way, readers are taken on a journey of many events, reclamation projects, myths, mythology, history, fallacy, and themes of great significance, and consequences. The nuances, rituals, the communal banquet 'Sadhya;' the euphoric, and hilariously eventful 'music mela' are narrated in authentic and fascinating accounts. It compares the traditions and performance styles of Indian & Western music. The human ecology, the biosphere consisting of the flora, fauna, and fountains, as well as the sustainable lifestyle of over a thousand village communities, should provide an acceptable model for world living, especially when the world is ominously staring at an imminent existential threat, and predicament. The plight of farming communities, the degradation of the environment, and the consequent global trend of 'migration in desperation' that are now widely seen, is passionately discussed offering the real causes that are often ignored in media discourses, and government policies. In this context, many scientific, technological, economic mitigation measures, and practical solutions are discussed in an 'interactive presentation' event at the race's exhibition venue. The book highlights the disparities of various social classes, genders, and the underprivileged. Faith & colonialism; exploitation & desecration; falsification of historical events for self-promotion and glorification, etc are candidly pointed out, perhaps drawing some ire and consternation. They are truly eye-openers and deeply thought-provoking. Several anecdotal stories, inspirational speeches, and eloquent poems spice up the reading pleasures. The many picture collages build reality and imagination to the descriptions and narrations. Among the mixes of many subjects, each chapter provides the readers with a piece of information, an inference; a wit, wisdom; a taste of rustic humour, a serious thought; a surprise, a riddle, an expectation, or anticipation of an unravelling mystery, a potential solution; and certainly, a moral to cherish and share with friends & families. The biggest regatta depicts a real world, a population, and a traditional lifestyle, a culture unknown to many, but under the circumstances may very well come to appreciate, and emulate. A book, truly informative, captivating, and interesting throughout; climaxing in suspense, drama, a hastily-arranged wedding, and making several discoveries along the way. All come to an end in colourful festivities celebrating the historic victory! The theme embodies and symbolizes many subject matters all at once
She Plays to Win
A recent Purdue University study showed that, in 2019, 95% of TV coverage, including highlights on sports networks, focused on men's sports. That doesn't leave much room for women, and female athletes are more than fed up with this inequality. One of those athletes, Prabhleen Kaur Lamba, decided to interview a number of top female athletes, and reflect on many other issues that female athletes face. In this breakout book, She Plays to Win, Lamba features three major focus points to address generations of issues by: Researching the history of women's sportsInterviewing top female athletesProjecting the future of women's sports, based on the progress already madeLamba is an advocate for women's sports, equal pay and media coverage, and equal opportunities. She Plays to Win is the cumulative efforts of countless women throughout generations of struggle. If you, your daughter, or anyone you care for has a passion for sports, this book is a must-read to understand what roads have been paved, and what roads you can pave for future generations.

Classical Dressage
Every rider would like to ride their horse as well as possible, but how do we go about it the right way? This book explains why and, above all, how to classically train a horse, for example, we have to look at each horse as an individual - what problems does he have? How is his natural crookedness expressed? What is his personality like? In classical dressage, there is a strategy for bringing each and every horse into balance. Anja Beran wants to preserve this knowledge, which has now almost been lost, and make it available to every interested rider, in a practical and comprehensible way. She discusses the exercises and describes how to work through them, before explaining in detail which problems can occur and what can be done about them. Classical dressage is the basis of all other ridden disciplines. It is guided by the horse's nature, keeping him healthy and strong and helping him to develop a wonderful and expressive personality. In this way, riding becomes a pleasure for horse and rider.
China Gold, A Companion to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing
China Gold: China's Quest for Global Power and Olympic Glory is essential reading for everyone who wants to understand what the Olympics means to China. It was written by Chinese experts in close collaboration with U.S. and European sports writers as a companion to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.Like many Games in the 112-year history of the modern Olympics, the 2008 Beijing Games were disparaged by some groups and actively campaigned against by others. The thing made them unique in Olympic history is that they were held in a country that is poised to rise to new prominence on the global stage.Fourteen years late, the rise to prominence is clear, but China's influence is very much in doubt. The calls for a "Genocide Games" boycott refer the Nazi Olympics of 1936.China has been drawing in, closing itself off from global interaction. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a contributing fact, but it's now a question whether China has any interest in integrating the Olympic ideals into its perspective on global leadership.China Gold: China's Quest for Global Power and Olympic Glory remains an important introduction to China and its people. There are chapters about economic, social, and environmental issues connected with the Olympics and fascinating stories about individual athletes and political dramas connected with sports, including "Ping-Pong diplomacy," about which Chinese Premier ZHOU Enlai 周恩来 was quoted as saying, "Never before in history has a sport been used so effectively as a tool of international diplomacy." It also provides wide-ranging illustrated history of sports in China, including women's sports in ancient China, traditional physical activities like tai chi and wushu, extreme and new sports, and the ascension of elite female athletes.

My Horses Have Something to Say
American Grand Prix rider, David De Wispelaere talks about his life, about the very special horses, and at the same time, holds up a mirror to today's competitive dressage sport. A startling book, which describes a path to listening, and harmonious coexistence with the horse.David personally tells about his eventful life and about the many special horses that have accompanied and whispered to him. His most interesting conversation partner was his horse Figaro, whom he lost far too soon and to whom this book is dedicated. The essence of his conversation with horses is that they always want to give their best, that false ambition on the part of the rider destroys them, and they want to be trained calmly and with understanding."I ask my horses to dance with me, we do not set foot into the boxing ring.""In dealing with horses, Harmony is paramount."- David De Wispelaere

Lian Gong Mi Jue
The book was written by Jin Yi Ming and Guo Cui Ya. The first edition of the book was issued in August of 1930. The book was printed by the Publishing House Hua Lian in Shanghai. The book covers "External" (WAI GONG) and "Internal" (NEI GONG) training methods practiced by traditional schools of the "Shaolin Family" (SHAOLIN PAI). Today as in the ancient time special exercises aimed at acquiring "Internal Mastery"(GONG FU) are one of the most important elements of Shaolin monks training. Those exercises is the core of the Shaolin martial training, they are the key to the true summit of mastery. An old proverb says: "If you exercise only the technique (style) but ignore special training you will be a nobody till your old days." "Special training" implies particular exercises for developing both WAI ZHUANG - "External Power" and NEI ZHUANG - "Internal Power". Those exercises (training procedures) are collected under a common title - LIAN GONG, literally "Exercising to Acquire Mastery".
Pitching Against Myself
Pitching Against Myself: It Is More Than a Game is two books in one. The first book is about Riley's illustrious baseball career and how he overcame significant odds, extraordinary challenges, and dreadful circumstances to go from being a benchwarmer to an All-American, and from being told that he should quit to pitching in the All-Star Game in the prestigious Northwoods League. It is also about his childhood and the house he grew up in that was plagued by addiction and oppression, and how he conquered extreme internal and external hardships to end generational curses and break free from the shackles that had been holding him and his family in bondage for too many years. The second book is the book Riley wishes existed when he was playing baseball; a book that teaches the physical and mental principles needed to succeed in every sport; a book that demonstrates how those principles also apply to every aspect of life; a book that challenges limiting beliefs and shows you how to change what you believe; a book that reminds you of who you are, and above all, Whose you are.
