On a Rising Swell
A high-speed glide through Florida surf culture and a deep dive into the lore of a classic surfing destination. Not far from where the Apollo 11 rocket launched to the moon, surfers make their way to the shore in the night. Clutching their surfboards, they chase a familiar dream: more speed, more altitude, and going beyond the limits of what has been done before. For that, they want to be the first ones to catch the early morning waves. In this book, Dan Reiter chronicles stories of the sport on Florida's Space Coast, a region that has produced some of the world's finest surf champions, Pipe masters, and surfboard builders. On this stretch of sand between Cape Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet, Florida's surf history reaches back to the native Ais people of the Atlantic Coast and continues to the elites of today, including Kelly Slater, Caroline Marks, and CJ Hobgood. Reiter offers insights into the evolution of surfboard shaping and design, the distinctive culture of the East Coast surfboard industry, and the traits and traditions that make Florida surfing unique.United by the background of Florida sun, soaring blue skies, and shifting sandbars, each one of this book's eclectic chapters tells its own story of passion and pursuit. Weaving together history, personal experiences, and interviews with the greats, Reiter redefines surf literature and invites readers to share in the thrill of a rising swell.

Pindito
Edi Frommenwiler had no ship-building experience before he and his wife Ella embarked on a personal quest to construct Pindito in 1992. For twelve years they single-handedly pioneered travel to what is now known to be the most important place on Earth for marine conservation - the heart of the Coral Triangle. Pindito continues this spirit of discovery. Twenty two times a year guests join expeditions and share in the chance to explore some famous and also, lesser known reefs and islands of eastern Indonesia.
How the Old Fella Done It
The classic Grand Banks Dory became the most-built wooden rowboat in history between the mid-1800s and early 1900s. It's classic form was ideal for codfishing on the Grand Banks, and each boatbuilding town evolved it's own methods and traditions. Today only one unbroken string of dory builders reminas--Milford Buchanan in Shelburne, Nova Scotis is still building the Shelburne Dory the way the Old Fellas taught him. This is his story.
Cruising the Inland Waterways of France and Belgium
This guide, now in its 29th edition, is firmly established as one of the most thorough and up to date guides to inland waterways cruising in France and Belgium (and Luxembourg). Annually updated each year by members of the Cruising Association's European Inland Waterways Section (EIWS) who actively cruise the waterways, it has the advantage that it is very much more detailed and up to date than other published guides. It also indicates what moorings are like, not just their location. In an extensive introduction and detailed information section, it explains the character of the various waterways; the challenges to be overcome; the equipment needed; licences and regulations; sources of further information; 'rules of the road' and many other items of interest to the inland waterways cruiser. This latest edition also includes maps of each waterway and a full index in addition to an index of waterways. It also includes a 15 per cent discount offer on first year's CA membership to purchasers joining online during the year. Members can download the free digital edition of this guide (and of 24 further inland waterways guides) as well as the Cruising Association's proprietary CAptain's Mate app, which enables them to access the most up-to-date information on routes and mooring locations.
50 Great Inland Cruising Routes in the Netherlands
This guide, which by this its sixth edition has already been hailed as one of the most thorough and up to date guides to inland waterways cruising in the Netherlands, provides detailed information on over 50 cruising routes in the country's 12 different provinces. Aimed at motor yachts cruising the 3,500kms of Dutch waterways that offer at least 4.0 metres air draft, the guide includes step-by-step navigation details for each route; bridge and lock opening procedures and times; descriptions of moorings and facilities; useful sources of information on every aspect of Netherlands cruising; a glossary of important Dutch terms, and tips offering unique insights into particular locations. It is the first book to provide this level of detail and to be written to supplement the national Nautical Maps (Waterkaarten) app and charts. It even corrects numerous errors to be found in this and other apps and published guides. This latest edition also includes a full index. The guide is written by Andy Mulholland and Machiel Lambooij, members of the Cruising Association's European Inland Waterways Section (EIWS), who have cruised virtually every waterway in the Netherlands over the past decade, and edited by fellow EIWS member Gordon Knight. Narrowboat Insights
Although this book is primarily for boating novices or those contemplating acquiring or hiring a narrowboat, I hope experienced skippers will enjoy reading the stories and reliving similar events from their past. This book is all about learning to become a competent narrowboat captain. The book is part adventure story and part training manual. It's essentially 'learn by example' via a collection of twenty narrowboat journeys that took place over the period 2005 to 2020 when Covid forced their end. The book is not a travelogue. All the locations mentioned have excellent descriptions and images online and elsewhere. No, it's a piece about family and friends and their adventures on hired narrowboats. It's about the pleasures of spending a week or two aboard these quaint craft. It's about recovering from mistakes and learning from those experiences. And finally, it's about living in the moment in a parallel universe as glorious British countryside drifts by at less than four miles per hour.
Cruising the River Moselle/Mosel
This guide is published by the European Inland Waterways Section of the Cruising Association (CA). The River Moselle, which runs for 394kms from Neuves-Maison in France through Luxembourg and Germany (where it is known as the Mosel) to finally join the Rhine at Koblenz, has hitherto been poorly served with cruising guides to what is widely regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful waterways. This guide is now the first to provide comprehensive information on this cruising route in English. Aimed at motor yachts with a draught of 2.5m or below and capable of reducing air draft to a maximum of 4.4m, the guide includes step-by-step navigation details for the river, including distances; bridge heights; lock dimensions and VHF channels; descriptions of moorings and facilities, and information on the sights, culture and visitor attractions along the route. It is written by CA members Andy and Gwen Mulholland, who have cruised extensively over the past decade in France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, and edited by Gordon Knight. It will be updated regularly via reports from CA members actively cruising the waterways, several hundred of which are submitted each year, and includes a 15 per cent discount offer on first year's CA membership to purchasers applying online during the year. Members then have access to additional hyperlinks to the CA's proprietary CAptain's Mate app, enabling them to read the most up to date information on mooring locations and navigation restrictions as they are posted.

Just Add Water
A candid and inspiring memoir from Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and one of the best swimmers ever to compete: Katie Ledecky. Katie Ledecky has won more individual Olympic races than any female swimmer in history. She is a three-time Olympian, a seven-time gold medalist, a twenty-one-time world champion, eight-time NCAA Champion, and a world record-holder in individual swimming events. Time and again, the question is posed to her family, her coaches, and to her--what makes her a champion? Now, for the first time, she shares what it takes to compete at an elite level. Again and again, Ledecky has broken records: those of others and, increasingly, her own. She is both consistent and innovative--consistent at setting goals and shattering them, and innovative in the way she approaches her training. A true competitor, she sets her goals by choosing the ones that feel the scariest. But, crucially, she never sacrifices the joy of competition, even in the face of adversity. Her positive mental outlook and a great support system provides the springboard to her success. Just Add Water charts Ledecky's life in swimming. It details her start in Bethesda, Maryland, where she played sharks and minnows and first discovered the joy of the pool; her early foray into the Olympics at the tender age of fifteen where, as the youngest member of the American team, she stunned everyone by winning her first gold medal; her time balancing competition and her education at Stanford University; how she developed a champion's mindset that has allowed her to persevere through so many meets, even under intense pressure; and how she has maintained her dominance in a sport where success depends on milliseconds. You learn how every element of her life--from the support of her family to the tutelage of her coaches, from her childhood spent in summer league swimming to the bright lights of Olympic pools in London, Rio, and Tokyo--set her up to become the champion she is. In the end, Katie's story is about testing yourself against the difficult, and seeing who you become on the other side.

Surfing in the Sixties
The 1960s was a decade like no other ... the culture, the music and the fashions. It also saw a surfing boom that bred innovation in surfboard design, changes in lifestyle, and most importantly, the development of ' surf ' photography. Mal Sutherland, John Pennings, Barrie Sutherland and Bob Weeks were pioneers of the genre - four young guys who blended their love of the beach with a passion for photography. Contrasted with this era when the whole planet goes surfing, in Australia in the sixties, riding a surfboard was the exclusive domain of either the very poor, or the wealthy. Consequently, many of us chose the poverty path, throwing our fate to the winds, rejecting the post-war consumerism and the suburban, Saturday Evening Post dream. We just went surfing, with no thought to tomorrow. Consequently, our cars were old jalopies crammed with bodies and boards, to share the petrol pennies around. Our wardrobe was goodwill - and sparse. Our dreams were of next day's surf, which meant five or six hours of paddling, take-offs, speed trim thrills, and attempting new manoeuvres as they were developed. We made better and better boards as our skill level quickly increased.

Ocean Speed
Four hundred nautical miles remained on Captain Bob's singlehanded passage from Mauritius to South Africa when maritime duty called making those the most difficult sea miles ever sailed over the prior twenty-six years. He delayed the pleasures of a safe harbor and risked his yacht and life to save a fellow mariner from peril at sea. This autobiographic nautical adventure recounts the foundation for the events of those days south of Madagascar by reviewing sailing skills gained and confidence acquired while sailing to the Channel Islands off the California coast, yacht club racing earning boat of the year honors, Great Lakes Singlehanded Society competition, redesigning a custom steel sloop, attending a demanding maritime school to earn a coveted international professional mariners license, skippering charter boats, and instructing sailing classes in St. Petersburg, Florida. He presents ocean cruising preparation by making upgrades to steering, navigation, safety, refrigeration, watermaking, radio communications, and the addition of wind and solar power to ensure reliable performance under demanding sailing conditions far out at sea. Other takeaways for those considering singlehanded ocean sailing are watchkeeping procedures while sleeping, daily life under sail, the requirements to legally enter nation-states, and respecting rules, regulations, and customs of societies far different from the homeland.Side stories illuminate those who attempt to leverage power over others and single women wandering the planet crewing, some wanting to be entertained by a single skipper aboard a substantial sailing yacht. Feel the knockdowns, the recoveries, the losses, and redemptions, and live the event that led him to reluctantly allow the long-lived sailing adventure to slip into memory.

Introduction to the European Inland Waterways
Several hundred boat owners take to the inland waterways of Europe every year, either for a change of cruising ground, a shortcut to the Med or Baltic or simply as a retreat from the rigours of sea sailing with advancing years. However, sources of information are scarce to answer such key questions as What's it like? Where are the best places? Do you need qualifications? Are there rules and regulations? What sort of boat is suitable? What preparations are required? Where can I go for maps and guides and further information? This new guide is designed to provide all the information needed to embark on the continental inland waterways. Written by members of the Cruising Association's European Inland Waterways Section (EIWS) and edited by Gordon Knight, the guide is aimed at both yacht and motor boat owners and includes advice on choosing or adapting a boat; the qualifications needed; preparing a boat to tackle the rivers, canals and locks; navigating safely; obtaining supplies and coping with communications and transport. Separate chapters on the four main cruising countries - France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands - describe the principal inland cruising routes and their attractions and list numerous additional sources of information from official bodies and tourist organisations, plus useful free apps to supplement them. Finally, it provides a brief taster of the attractions to be discovered further afield in countries such as Poland, Sweden and Norway. It also includes a 20 per cent discount offer on first year's membership for purchasers joining the CA online during the year.
