Winter Swimming
A beautifully illustrated exploration of cold-water traditions in Scandinavia and around the world, and a thorough account of why it provides such a boost to body and soul. Whether in lake, lido, river or sea, we know the benefits of swimming outdoors and in nature - environmentally friendly and accessible, it can influence our happiness, our energy and our inner tranquility, and give us that winter glow. Danish scientist Dr Susanna S繪berg leads us step by step into the icy water and explains the "cold-shock response", the massive endorphin rush as our body reacts and adapts to very cold temperatures through the winter season. Not only do our circulation, heart, lungs and skin respond positively, but our immune system, metabolism and mental health too. In particular she explains how our "brown fat" is activated to benefit multiple health conditions. Winter swimming is fast becoming one of our most popular pastimes. This beautifully illustrated exploration of cold-water traditions in Scandinavia and around the world shows how it can have a significant positive impact on our physical and mental health, confidence and well-being, providing such a boost to body and soul. Green Paddler
This book on paddlesports details using kayaks and other small boats with an eye to environmental sensibility and affordable recreation. In Green Paddler, author Paula Johanson reprises her short articles from Kayak Yak website and brings new insights & humour to the time she spends on the water. "Superb! What a fantastic read for a Monday morning." -Pearly on AdvancedElements kayaking forum As a teenager, Paula learned kayaking and canoeing. After a sudden hearing loss took her sense of balance, she returned to paddling for fitness and vestibular improvement. Finding a calming oasis of nature in cities is a bonus! Whether she's at home on a west coast island or travelling in Canada to promote her writing, her kayaks make it possible for this stocky little woman to haul her own gear so she can paddle in harbours, lakes, and rivers. Though she doesn't own a car or a couch, her "Affordable Fleet" of kayaks includes folding inflatable kayaks from AdvancedElements, as well as wheels for a Necky Eliza sea kayak and an old Pamlico to loan to beginners. "With the finely-honed body of a freelance writer, I turn heads as I bring my inflatable kayaks on buses, trains, and airplanes, or wheel my sea kayak along a road," she says. "...but it's the kayaks that get all the attention." Doublejoy Books is thrilled to release this practical discussion of using small boats. The enjoyment of kayaking shows on every page as paddler Paula Johanson talks about how it feels to get out on the water, even when one is not a hard-body Olympian. Green Paddler is the author's forty-fourth nonfiction book, and her confidence is clear whether she welcomes the reader to paddlesports or environmental concerns. "Paula's experience as a professional writer shows when writing about her prime leisure time activity, kayaking. I find myself smiling at Paula's clever descriptions of the places that she's paddled and her humorous observations about the people around her. Paula's words paint a clear picture of the places she's paddling so I can imagine being there alongside her." - Justine Curgenven, award-winning adventure filmmaker and expedition kayaker "Great posts! It makes me want to get out on the water." -Lakejumper on AdvancedElements kayaking forum

The Misadventures of a Cross-America Kayaker
The Misadventures of a Cross-America Kayaker is the story of an old man on what would probably be his final adventure. Over a span of seven years, Hank Landau paddled and portaged over 4,700 miles on nineteen waterways and rivers, six of them going upstream. He touched seventeen states and traversed thirty-one dams along a route that started at the Pacific Ocean and ended at the Atlantic.Alone almost the entire trip, and always under his own power, age and injuries took their toll. Paddling over a diversion dam, run-ins with a charging alligator and a rattlesnake that pursued his kayak, almost being run down by tows and barges, being swept out to sea at an inlet, capsizing in rapids, and becoming lost in a swamp as fire ants invaded his cockpit were some of the perilous, life-threatening, and sometimes humorous misadventures he encountered along the way.He also had ample time to reflect on the accomplishments of early explorers, including those of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, whose route he followed west of the Tennessee River. Not a day went by that he didn't reflect on the beneficial and detrimental impacts civilization has brought to our rivers and waterways and to the people who now live and once lived along their shores. This is their story, and your story, as well as his.

Young Woman and the Sea
NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM DISNEY STARRING DAISY RIDLEY.The exhilarating true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, and inspire a new era for women in sportsBy age twenty, at the height of the Jazz Age, Trudy Ederle was the most accomplished swimmer in the world. She'd won Olympic gold and set a host of world records. But the greatest challenge remained: the English Channel. Only a few swimmers, none of them women, had ever made the treacherous twenty-one mile crossing. Trudy's failed first attempt seemed to confirm what many naysayers believed: No woman could possibly accomplish such a thing. In 1926, Ederle proved them wrong. As her German immigrant parents cheered her, and her sister and fellow swimmer Meg helped fashion both her scandalous two-piece swimsuit and leak-proof goggles, Trudy was determined to succeed. "England or drown is my motto," she said, plunging into the frigid Channel for her second attempt at the crossing. Fourteen hours later, two hours faster than any man, and after weathering a gale and waves that approached six-feet, she stepped onto Kingsdowne Beach as the most famous woman in the world.Based on years of archival research that unearthed Ederle's memory from obscurity, Young Woman and the Sea brings to life the real Trudy Ederle, the challenges that came with her fame, and the historic mark her achievement made for all women athletes who followed.

Conquer Your Fear of Water
A swimmer needs to know more than "how to go from here to there." The ability to rest in deep water is what saves lives. Every person needs to be peaceful in deep water going nowhere. Fear is healed by feeling safe, taking small comfortable steps, and being in control all the time. It is kept in place by pushing oneself and rushing. The following teachings in the book make every last person successful: - Comfort comes first. If you're comfortable, everything else in aquatics is possible. Don't try to relax!- Get your safety from yourself, not the bottom or the side. - It's okay if your feet touch the bottom when you float in shallow water.- Learn to be comfortable being still in deep water.- Learning to swim requires comfort in deep water first. It need not include strokes. "Strokes are merely choreography" for efficiency. -Miracle Swimming InstructorDo you wish you could swim? Play in any body of water freely? Every single point and conversation, exercise and thought experiment you need to be successful is explained. Say goodbye to shame: there's no silly reason that anyone is afraid."...The book is amazing. I am so grateful I found it because it speaks to the heart of me. I am taking swim lessons at the local rec center and while they are terrific for what they are, they are exactly as you describe. Without your book and video, I would not have the courage and confidence to speak up and tell the instructors what I need. To their credit, they listen! They help me and I think I am helping them by being the student I've become thanks to your enlightening me."--Gratefully, PWStrokes are irrelevant to overcoming fear and are omitted.Kirkus Review: "Our Verdict: Get it"An insightful, warmly reassuring how-to for novice swimmers.Anyone can feel confident swimming in deep water, according to this soulful beginner's swimming course....introduces rudimentary skills in a pressure-free, self-paced manner that allows learners to edge into the shallow end, acclimate while clinging to walls, and build slowly up to the big step of submerging their faces. More advanced lessons cover front floats and back floats, arm motions and hand orientations, and frolics like underwater somersaults and handstands....cogent-detailed, lucid, and eminently practical for helping newbies overcome fundamental but often overlooked barriers. Swimming programs often ignore students' struggles with basic aquatic competency, and Dash's book ably fills that gap in a fun and appealing way.BookLife Prize - 2022 by Publishers Weekly"In this well-executed text, with a step-by-step approach to not only overcoming a fear of water but also learning to swim in spite of it, Melon's perspective... make(s) it easy to understand her lessons. Canoes
Dartnouth College has enjoyed a long legacy associated with canoeing. From its very first days in 1772 to modern times with the founding of the Ledyard Canoe Club in 1920. The author takes you on that journey with special attention given to the Abenaki tribal tradition of building birchbark canoes, to adaptations by white settlers and traders, to the commercialization of canoes by the Old Town Company. Of particular note is the influence of John Ledyard, explorer and namesake of the Club, on adventuresome student members. The author was himself the originator of three canoe and kayak expeditions: Danube River (1700 miles), Japan coast (1100 miles) and South Korean Islands (500 miles), two of which became National Geographic Magazine cover stories.
