A Most Extraordinary Life
Not every child is brought up to be a champion, but Sally's father planted that seed in her at the age of ten. From that moment on she was nourished and polished to be champion of the world in tennis. In this book you will learn how she came out from under her father's dictates and found a spiritual dimension that had long been hidden from her. She learned the difference between competition and cooperation, struggle and flow, disappointment and acceptance, self-centeredness and kindness, passivity and willfulness, entitlement and gratefulness, and love and fear. The themes in her life resemble those in others' lives, yet she found answers to her challenges and struggles that gave meaning to her life. These she shares here in this touching memoir. Above all, she makes it clear that every child can be raised to be a champion... that is, to be the best that she or he can be, no matter the circumstances. And, everyone can aspire to be that champion at any age!
Small Town Baseball Big League Dreams
From the early 1900's, town team baseball in eastern Iowa has been a fixture in the area, often referred to as "The Hotbed of Baseball". Following World War II, the Dubuqueland area fielded semi-pro teams in most small rural towns. It was especially popular from the late 40's through 70's and 80's, as measured by fan interest. Although the number of fans attending games has declined since that time, many towns continue to field teams performing at highly competitive levels. It is that tradition which is captured in an entertaining style, emphasizing memories and stories of individuals who viewed the simplicity and innocence of the game as a way of life.

Field of Magic
Superstition has been a part of baseball from the beginning. From good luck charms to human mascots to ritual statues of Babe Ruth to the curse of Colonel Sanders, there may be almost as many superstitions as players (or fans). Drawing on social science, religious studies and SABRmetrics, this book explores the rich history of supernatural belief in the game and documents a wide variety of rituals, fetishes, taboos and jinxes. Some of these have changed over time but coping with uncertainty on the field through magical thinking remains a constant.
Caddie to the Stars
I wrote this book to show what a great job caddieing is and the many opportunities it affords. It's a life-changing job. If done right by the caddie master, this can open doors to the caddies that never would have happened in other jobs. As a caddie master, I would set up the caddie to put them in the right situation. If the young caddie wanted to be an actor, lawyer, or car salesman or work on Wall Street, you would have them caddie for the members or guests that best suits their future ambitions. It's like a working interview. They can see how hard you work and how you interact with others and how professional you perform your job.As a caddie master, it is your absolute responsibility to inform the college-bound caddies of the caddie scholarship programs that are available. So hopefully, this book can inspire young kids into the great world of caddieing. It's a life changer!--Caddie Master Tim Peel

Baseball’s Memorable Misses
Baseball books span the spectrum from the All-Stars to the has-beens but invariably overlook the endless string of things that could have happened but didn't. Baseball's Memorable Misses fills that void, pointing out little-known facts perfect for both rabid and casual fans. Who knew that Willie Mays never won an RBI crown or that Stan Musial hit the most home runs in one day but never led his league in a season? Nolan Ryan had zero Cy Young Awards despite owning records for strikeouts and no-hitters. Roger Clemens, on the other hand, had a record seven Cy Youngs and two 20-strikeout games but zero no-hitters.There were also zero no-hitters by Greg Maddux, who has more wins than any living pitcher. Players took zeroes and sometimes double-zeroes as uniform numbers. Veteran baseball writer Dan Schlossberg delves into the previously-unknown world of baseball zeroes, exploring everything from Christy Mathewson's zero runs allowed in the 1905 World Series to the three perfect games pitched in Yankee Stadium. This book also reveals that there were zero no-hitters pitched by Pirates at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field even though visiting pitchers did not fall victim to that hex. There have been zero players who hit five home runs in one game but two who have hit five in one day. This is a book of Almost But Not Quite (ABNQ for short) but also a book that suggests baseball's second century can be almost as intriguing as its first. With the help of author Doug Lyons, who wrote the foreword, and celebrated baseball cartoonist Ronnie Joyner, this is also a utilitarian volume, perfect for the living room coffee table or even the bathroom. Like the game itself, Baseball's Memorable Misses is fun--and perfect for rain delays in season or off-season enjoyment.

The Roaring Red Front
With the world turning rightwards and democracy looking at its most precarious since the 1930s, the emergence of a global network of left-wing, anti-fascist and anti-racist football fans has been one of the few shining lights in dark times. Some support clubs that are globally renowned, including the great St Pauli - more famous for the quality of its politics and its merchandise than its football. Others, no less committed, follow virtual minnows, like Red Star Paris and Bohemians Prague. But they still have proud histories, deep convictions and something to say. The left often fails to connect. How can these clubs inform and inspire? How can their example help collectivist, internationalist and inclusive principles defeat the seductive slogans and symbols of the growing nationalist and nativist movements across the planet? The Roaring Red Front explores theses questions while examining the history and current struggles of these special clubs - and why it all matters.
Calvin
Calvin: Baseball's Last Dinosaur is the story of Calvin Griffith, who was rescued from poverty and adopted by his uncle (Hall of Famer Clark Griffith) and went on to become owner of the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins. Calvin's life included friendships with many greats of the game and figures in American history from the 1920s through the 1980s. The Griffith family operation would see many highs and lows, finally succumbing to the corporate-driven economic realities of modern sports. But Calvin, in his typically unvarnished fashion and with Jon Kerr's help, wouldn't go without giving his version of how baseball and the world changed.
Women and Girls' Cricket
For many decades, women and girls' cricket has been under-represented, under-financed, undervalued and lacking in true organisation. Despite this, many thousands of female players over the years have fought against the barriers, developed their skills and fallen in love with this incredible sport.Recent years have seen an explosion of female participation, broadcast coverage, new teams, new clubs, new competitions and an undeniable sense that women and girls' cricket is establishing itself as the most significant growth area of the game. We've seen full houses at Lords and the MCG, we've seen the success of the Hundred, the Women's Big Bash, the prospect of a Women's IPL and most importantly, thousands of new players across the world benefitting from everything cricket has to offer. What is needed now, is to build on these successes, to provide resources and information for clubs, schools and coaches to start, to grow and to coach their own programmes. This book is the answer.Lydia Greenway has written a full guide on coaching, administration, formats, techniques, EDI and more. Carry the Rock
In 2007, as the fiftieth anniversary of the fight to integrate Little Rock Central High School approached, veteran sportswriter and native son of Little Rock Jay Jennings returned to his hometown to take the pulse of the city and the school. He found a compelling story in Central High's football team, where Black and white students toiled under longtime coach Bernie Cox, whose philosophy of discipline and responsibility and punishing brand of physical football had led the team to win seven state championships. Carry the Rock tells the story of the dramatic ups and downs of a high school football season and reveals a city struggling with its legacy of racial discrimination and the complex issues of contemporary segregation. In the season Jennings masterfully chronicles, Cox finds his ideas sorely tested in his attempts to unify the team, and the result is an account brimming with humor, compassion, frustration, and honesty. What Friday Night Lights did for small-town Texas, Carry the Rock does for the urban South and for any place like Little Rock where sports, race, and community intersect.
The Brazil 1970
**SHORTLISTED FOR THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2023**The Beautiful Team is the fascinating and dramatic inside story of the greatest football team of all time. Predicted to be drab and dull, the 1970 World Cup became the greatest show on Earth, with the mesmerising Brazilians at the heart of a dramatic and delirious three weeks. After their demise at the 1966 World Cup, the South Americans were no longer the masters of the game. The defenestration rattled Brazil, and left them in purgatory before they swept through the qualifiers with coach Jo瓊o Saldanha. Even so, the team left their home country discredited against the backdrop of a military dictatorship and the proliferation of science in the game. At the World Cup finals, Mario Zagallo and his cast of balletic players - including lodestar Pel矇, the cerebral Gerson and the ingenious Tost瓊o - ensured Brazil would forever be synonymous with the global game and a byword for style and craft. Their triumph was also the end of Brazil's golden era. The technocrats had invaded the terrain and Brazil would never again reach those heights.
The Sea Lanterns

No measure is too drastic. No tactic too cruel. But complicating Darrow's work is his own unsettled history, and in wrestling with this history, Darrow begins to understand his frail coach with jarring personal clarity.Perhaps the two men aren't as dissimilar as they'd seemed. And perhaps Darrow's future-even if it's triumphant-will mean not banishing his ghosts, but living forever in their company.
Hut! Hut! Hike!
Hut! Hut! Hike! explores the history of football terminology by examining when and why more than 400 familiar words and expressions entered the game. By linking the game's evolution to changes in its language, readers learn the origins of first string, basic fundamentals, X's and O's, long snapper, and hundreds more terms used in every football conversation or broadcasts. In addition, you will learn which change in the game led to dropback and handoff becoming popular, and why the names for many defensive player positions emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Organized in easy-to-read, bite-size chunks and filled with period images and illustrations, Hut! Hut! Hike! tells football's history one word at a time.
Weedon's Way - The Pain-Free Way
With back injuries in golf rising, there is clearly a need to investigate and resolve the problem via the biomechanics of the swing, rather than researching the technology of the clubs.Having worked with scientists and doctors with a historical interest in innovation within sporting techniques, at Northern Michigan University, Michigan State University USA, and Sports Surgery Clinic (Dublin), we have discovered that compared to the modern swing our revolutionary Weedon's Way swing creates significant less torque between the thorax and pelvis without loss of performance. In the modern swing, during the downswing the thorax accelerates whilst the pelvis decelerates. As a consequence the thorax and pelvis act in opposite directions; massive torque is inflicted on the lumbosacral spine mainly at L5/S1.In the Weedon's Way swing the thorax and pelvis travel at similar speeds reducing the aforementioned torque. In essence we remove the axis tilt i.e. body's side bend on the downswing. In the course of my project I have collated and reviewed 17 years of scientific research papers relating to low back pain in golf. The solution common to all papers is to play/practice less whilst performing core strengthening exercises. There has never been an evidence-based alternative until now.'Swing Weedon's Way the Pain Free Way'.

Swing, Walk, Repeat
In his second book Swing, Walk, Repeat, Jay Revell shares a soulful collection of observations made from a life consumed by golf. Written during the COVID-19 pandemic, Swing, Walk, Repeat offers a glimpse of how golf can be an important foundation in someone's life. Revell's approachable musings, recorded during that tumultuous year, are reflective of the friendships, camaraderie, and personal exploration that can be found on any golf course in the world. From Revell's takes on enjoying golf with dogs to tips for finding hidden gem courses and playing with persimmon woods, Swing, Walk, Repeat takes readers for a walkabout through his feelings about the game. With quips about golf carts, course etiquette, and challenging playing partners, Jay injects plenty of strong opinions about the game too. Most notably, Revell once again expresses his love for golf through observations about how it touches his life everyday. Throughout the book, a unifying theme emerges-the more you give yourself to golf, the more the game gives back to you. Swing, Walk, Repeat is a love letter to golf authored from the pen of a prolific writer. These simple and universal truths about the game are proof of why Revell's words continue to inspire those who seek to find themselves while playing golf. In this approachable collection of short essays, Revell has devised a devotional reader that will fit right into any golf library. Much like other classics from golf literature, Swing, Walk, Repeat is the sort of book that has the potential to become a favorite for any avid golf reader.
FairBreak
Less than a decade ago, female cricketers earned very little despite the expectations associated with playing at an elite level. Shaun Martyn, founder of FairBreak, recognised the inequality and decided to do something about it. What started with a purity of intention, ran into roadblocks at the highest levels of cricket's establishment. In May 2022, FairBreak hosted the world's first global T20 cricket tournament in Dubai. Featuring ninety of the world's top female cricketers, no other sports event outside of an Olympic Games has brought athletes from thirty-five nations together in one venue to showcase their skills and sporting prowess. This book is about a social impact movement striving for equality. Author, Karen Motyka, has given voice to the perspectives of Martyn and the people who have driven the movement forward; the FairBreak management team, the global superstars of women's cricket, and high-profile advocates. Each one of them is a #fairbreaker. This is a celebration of their effort."FairBreak has recognised the commercial value of women's cricket when others have not. In doing so, FairBreak has created new opportunities for women to reach their full potential in our great game. Associate Nations players, now more than ever, can dream of taking on the best in the world on the biggest stage. Geography and gender are no longer barriers to becoming a professional cricketer."Alex Blackwell, former Australian Women's Cricket Captain

The Immaculate Reception
Greg T. Walker felt like it was high time to finally tell the tale of the Immaculate Reception and the 1972 Pittsburgh Steelers. The greatest play and moment in football history, and the team that launched the Steeler's dynastyIn the words of those who played, coached, refereed, and covered the 1972 season, team, and play. What happened? People have been asking that question ever since. The play had lasted for just 17 seconds. Tens of thousands witnessed it, but nobody saw it. The Immaculate Reception is a myth; a miracle; a cottage industry; a conspiracy; a crime; and a detective story. But before it became all these things, it was just a football play. The last desperate hope of a team and a town that had always been destined to lose. It's been 50 years since Franco Harris worked what's been called the 'Miracle of all Miracles, ' and the play has been a mystery ever since. This is a story of a play that has lived a life of its own. -Narrator: A Football Life: The Immaculate Reception-It was tremendous. Everybody in the world said they saw it live. They did see it on replay because they kept showing it. I thought, and still do, that it was the greatest play ever. -Art Rooney Jr.-It was the defining moment in Steelers' history. -Barry Pearson Steelers-The most memorable moment in sports. -Bruce Van Dyke Steelers-That one play altered the course of the Steelers' franchise. -Franco Harris Steelers-The Immaculate Deception. The public was deceived. The officials were deceived. We got deceived. -George Atkinson Raiders-In the greatest games, every little thing counts; one little thing changes and the game is completely different. They won. I don't know if it was fair and square, but they won. And we are still talking about it 50 years later. That's a beautiful thing. -Phil Villapiano Raiders-That play, if you are a Steeler fan, you believe in it. If you're a sinner like them damn Raiders, then you'll never accept it. So, it's almost like the Bible: A myth to some, and a faith to others. -Frenchy Fuqua Steelers-

Fun Over Fear
Parents, do you want to make sure your child has as much fun as possible when they start playing baseball? Did you know that youth baseball is the second most popular boys' sport in the United States? The sandlot and neighborhood pickup games have been replaced by the explosion of "pay for play" travel baseball that can start as early as six years. The myth: Recent studies of parents of adolescent athletes identified a belief among parents that travel baseball and early specialization are necessary for advanced skill set development. Many feel that specialization will increase their child's ability to play baseball beyond high school. The reality: Any travel team coach or instructor that tells you, as a parent of a three- through 12-year-old, that lessons and being a part of travel baseball will result in a college scholarship, is only concerned with one thing: your money! As the parent of two sons who went on to play baseball in college as well as a former head baseball coach at the NCAA level, I want to share alternatives with parents that will allow their children to avoid the anxiety and stress that many face within the overstructured and overorganized world of travel baseball. The hamster wheel of travel ball is a business model and not a baseball development model. At the ages of three through 12, baseball should be all about one thing-having fun!We play it as kids, we watch it and listen to it as adults, and we pass down our love of the game through generations. Baseball is an American family tradition, and I am sharing many stories from my childhood as well as my journey as a baseball dad. My hope is that this audiobook will allow you as a family to create many moments and memories through the sport of baseball. Some of my greatest memories as a child are from the pickup games with my neighborhood friends and local Little League games we played in.Baseball should be an outlet for children, a chance for them to be creative, to exercise, and to learn how to succeed.
Soccer Drills
It is probably truer today than ever that the game is made for dribblers. Firstly, we play on pitches that are so much better than they used to be. 4g technology means we have astroturf like the best laid grass, while outdoor grass pitch technology means drainage is maximized and wear minimized. On top of those physical conditions lending themselves to a dribbling game, defensive tactics are improved to such an extent that even weaker teams can compete with much stronger ones and hold the hope of keeping their more talented opponents from scoring. At all levels players are fitter, and coaches are better. Teams, even youth ones, are more organized. Here is a preview of what you'll learn...Understanding the rules and regulationsLearning the field layoutMastering the basics of soccerCommon team practice drillsSoccer drills and game-development exercises to do on your ownAdvancing your skills and playing soccer like a proPreparing for team try-outsThis guide provides that starting point by not only going through the basic and advanced aspects of dribbling, but also giving concrete drills and exercises that players can do to develop these skills. This fully illustrated guide not only tells you how to be a great dribbler, it shows you by illustrating each example, drill and move so you can see exactly how they should be done.
The Art of Goalkeeping
This book was written by a goalkeeper for goalkeepers. It comprehensively covers all of the skills, responsibilities, and equipment that provide the foundation for goalkeeping excellence at all levels and ages. During my own career, I won many awards-from Outstanding Goalkeeper to the most respected award of all, Fairest and Best. I was awarded the latter whilst playing in the highly competitive, Western Australian under 21's Youth League. I have trained under some of the best coaches in the country, including former Australian Socceroos (national) coach Frank Schaeffer. What you will read here is a combination of my own experience and comprehensive research on all of the aspects that make up a goalkeeper par excellence. There is much more to goalkeeping than that exhilarating fingertip save that brings a crowd to their feet in applause. The art of goalkeeping requires a broad set of skills and the equipment to match, to take you from being just good, to outstanding. This book is designed to get you there. It contains both reference material and detailed how-to instructions to help you become the best you can be. I do hope that you enjoy reading it and get as much out of it as I did writing it.
Golf Ball Hunting (The bathroom book about the small game of the big game)
Golf Ball Hunting (The bathroom book about the small game of the big game) takes a humorous and entertaining perspective of the lost and found golf ball. The lost ball is the nemesis of every golfer, in any round of golf. It is the loss of a stroke, loss of money and loss of confidence in your game. Wilson walks you through a virtual scavenger hunt for a misguided (pun intended) golf ball, with tips and tricks to find golf balls for profit or just for fun. You'll find yourself laughing out loud as the author describes his adventures and experiences when hunting for the elusive lost spheroids; You'll understand search techniques and golf ball hunting safety. Discover where to find the lost golf ball "honey holes" in the darkest corners of the rough, woods and marsh, just off the lush fairway of every golf course, and how these lost balls are like finding "free money", at every turn, hook and slice.Learn interesting golf ball factoids and information regarding the impact of lost balls on the environment. This book spans the imaginative side of life, from the balls point of view, and more serious comments on the negative impact these lost balls have on Mother Earth. The reader has the chance to delve into the mind of a golf ball hunter and feel how hunting (and finding) golf balls brings satisfaction to your life by recovering balls that appear from distant golfer lands, and research the balls with unusual tattoos, such as "Joe's bachelor party 1969", or other intriguing logos.Discovering a lost ball brings joy and excitement to the new adopted golf ball parent (i.e., Golfer) and the formerly orphaned ball who may have the opportunity to land on a fairway or see the bottom of the pin cup again. Maybe that newly found ball will be the one that finally makes that "hole in one".
Baseball Research Journal (Brj), Volume 52 #2
Ty Cobb has reigned over baseball history as a titan of the game, and according to quotes repeated by Cobb's biographers, he believed the name "Tyrus" to be unique to him. Was the name an invention of his father's, meant to be a historical or Biblical reference of some kind? In this issue, Dr. William "Ron" Cobb debunks the spurious explanations given by previous chroniclers as to the origin of the name, and offers insight into Cobb family history. ALSO IN THIS ISSUE: "More Relief Pitchers Belong in the Hall of Fame: Which Ones?" by Elaina and John Pakutka Jane Forbes Clark, Chairman of the Board of Directors of The National Baseball Hall of Fame, reminds us each year on inudction day that the Hall contains the top 1% of major-league players. But that 1% is not evenly distributed across eras or positions. If the "best 1%" standard were applied to the subset of relief pitchers we study in this article, 20 to 30 of them would be in the Hall of Fame. Only nine have won induction. Relief pitchers generate about 10% of the total WAR each year, but constitute only 3% of Hall of Famers. "Balancing Starter and Bullpen Workloads in a Seven-Game Postseason Series" by David J. Gordon, MD, PhD In general, the strategy of routinely removing a starting pitcher in the fifth or sixth inning when the batting order turns over for the third time may win some games by rescuing starters from the Third Time Through the Order Penalty (TTOP), but it leaves a shortfall of innings that must be covered in a seven-game series, leading to overexposure of a limited pool of relievers. The deleterious effect of repeatedly using relievers--an increase of as much as .076 in wOBA--substantially outweighs the effect the TTOP on starters (approximately a .030 increase in wOBA). Protecting starters from the significant but relatively small TTOP does no good if your best high-leverage relievers become fatigued and/or "old hat" to opposing hitters by the time they are needed in the deciding game of a seven-game series. "Keith Hernandez and Cooperstown: A Data Synthesis and Visualization Project" by Stephen D. Dertinger, PhD Our player performance analyses provide interesting insights into Keith Hernandez's Hall of Fame case. A key component of the ToxPi methodology involves synthesizing multiple, carefully chosen performance metrics into composite scores. Player performances are distilled into single values, while the associated visuals provide a clear indication of where they excelled (and where they did not). Hernandez's ToxPi Profiles reveal defensive excellence both compared to his contemporaries and compared to Hall of Fame first basemen... [but also] make it clear that his offense also contributes to his Hall of Fame case. Whether considering traditional or advanced statistics, these analyses support the contention that Keith Hernandez belongs in Cooperstown.
Baseball Research Journal (Brj), Volume 52 #1
Harvey Haddix pitched one of the most notable "near perfect" games in professional baseball history when he completed 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 26, 1959. Unfortuantely, Haddix lost the perfecto and the Pirates lost the game in the 13th inning. Although Major League Baseball decreed that such performances be removed from the "official" no-hitters list, those games make for an intriguing list of their own. Haddix's career was not without other highlights. A three-time All-Star, and three-time Gold Glove winner, he was also the winning pitcher of Game Seven of the 1960 World Series. ALSO IN THIS ISSUE: "The Death and Rebirth of the Home Team Batting First" by Gary Belleville In the early days of baseball, it was common for a home-team captain to choose to bat first, rather than last. Games could be played with a single ball, and so being the first team to take swings at a new sphere was believed to be advantageous. However, in the late 1880s Henry Chadwick was a strong proponent of batting last. He passionately advocated his position in print several times in 1888. In the August 8 edition of Sporting Life, he wrote, "Will the League captains kindly... point out wherein going to the bat first in a match equals the desirable advantage of having a chance for a winning rally which going to the bat last gives a team?" "Trades from Hell: A Tale of Two Cities" by William Shkurti The major league baseball clubs of Cleveland and Cincinnati have much in common. In the 1960s both teams traded away popular homegrown slugging outfielders. The Indians traded away Rocky Colavito, and the Reds traded away Frank Robinson. In both cases the fan base reacted negatively. Both players thrived for their new teams while their old teams continued to struggle. And both trades are still ubiquitous today on lists of "worst trades of all time." Yet within a short period of time, the fate of these two clubs diverged. The Cincinnati Reds bounced back to enjoy a dominant decade of success as the Big Red Machine. The Cleveland Indians descended into a pattern of futility that lasted 35 years. "Quantifying the Effect of Offseason Contract Extensions on Short-Term Player Performance" by Muyuan Li, Greg Plithides, and Max Plithides Sabermetricians have studied the effects of free agency and long-term contracts on player performance, but they have spent far less time studying the effect of big offseason contract extensions on performance the following season. This line of inquiry has become increasingly important, as more contract extensions are being made and increasing amounts of money are being dedicated to them. In the 2019-20 offseason alone, pre-free agency player extensions amounted to $1.7 billion. Since 2020, many young stars including Wander Franco (21), Fernando Tatis Jr. (22), and Francisco Lindor (27) have foregone free agency to sign long-term deals with their clubs in excess of $200 million.

The Shift - The Business of Baseball at The Youth-High School and Professional Level
In my early years as a college coach, while out recruiting several local American Legion and Senior Babe Ruth tournaments, I began to hear about these "AAU" travel baseball tournaments. This was truly the very beginning of hearing that term, travel baseball. I was told these teams were made up of the best players from all over New England. As I began to scout and evaluate athletes at these various tournaments, it was clear they were. Attending travel baseball tournaments suddenly became part of my recruiting. As both a college head coach and a father, I could see my sons were going to be exposed to a different path than I had been. What I did not know is that events were already taking place that would make their baseball journeys, and the journeys of so many millions of boys, radically different than the one I experienced. The business of Baseball has grown to become a four-billion-dollar industry. Young athletes and their families have become commodities for venture capitalists and larger, nationally known franchise travel programs. The hamster wheel of baseball is perennial and shows no signs of slowing down. On top of that, the MLB and college baseball worlds have changed dramatically, and those changes have affected youth baseball at all age groups. This is THE SHIFT, where "for the love of the game" has given way to an exclusive world of wealth and greed. Learn about it from someone who has lived it as a coach, mentor, and most importantly as a father.
Pat Van Den Hauwe - My Autobiography
Psycho' is a word rarely bandied about in football today. There is no place on the pitch for player contact, let alone the sort of hard, robust tackling that could earn a player such a nickname. But 25 years ago, things were different. Only when players really overstepped the mark were their names added to the referee's little black book. And Pat Van Den Hauwe had a reputation as one of the hardest players in the game. In a career encompassing some 401 Football League appearances for Birmingham City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Millwall, he notched up two league titles and a European Cup Winners' Cup medal - but he also made his mark as one of the toughest and most feared defenders in the game. But Pat wasn't just a tough player on the pitch. The way he lived his life meant that he needed to be tough off the pitch as well. A 'hard nut' reputation invites people into your life who want to see how far they can push you - and Pat Van Den Hauwe attracted such people by the bus-load. This autobiography is not the usual collection of career memories from an ex-pro. It is probably the most explicit book ever written by a former footballer. Throughout his career, and long after he left the game, Pat Van Den Hauwe courted danger. In fact, he nearly paid the ultimate price for living life to the extreme. 'Psycho Pat': legend or madman? Read on and find out -

Pete Hill
Among early 20th century baseball players, John Preston "Pete" Hill (1882-1951) was considered the equal of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker--only skin color kept him out of the majors. A capable manager, Hill captained the Negro League's Chicago-based American Giants, led two expansion teams and retired from the sport as manager of the Baltimore Black Sox. Drawing on contemporary newspaper accounts, this first ever biography of Hill recounts the career of a neglected Hall of Famer in the context of the turbulent issues that surrounded him--segregation, women's suffrage, Prohibition and the Spanish flu.

At just 16 he signed his first professional contract with St Johnstone, shooting to prominence in the 1980/81 season, scoring 22 league goals and playing a starrring role for the Scottish youth team. He was soon hot property. After two years of mixed fortunes at Sunderland, McCoist returned to Scotland and signed for his boyhood heroes Glasgow Rangers. The Life and Times of Dave The Rave Stallworth
From legendary Coach Mike Krzyzewski: David Stallworth was one of the most exciting players in college basketball in the 60s. As a high school player in Chicago I saw him play in Chicago Stadium in a double header - I was amazed! I had never seen anyone that talented in person. Although I knew I was not as talented, it motivated me to work even harder. He did things I had not ever imagined and he did them with ease. He was truly remarkable! From the Bench: Before the 1964-65 NCAA Final Four team all move on to sky hoops, the team is committed to growing the existing WSU David Stallworth Memorial Scholarship to cover the full year of tuition and expenses in memory of All American "Dave the Rave" Stallworth. The WSU David Stallworth Scholarship originated as a way to honor David Stallworth and his legacy and was created by Robert Powers, Robert Litan, Jerry Aaron, Gary Austerman, and Herb Krumsick. Just as the Shocker basketball program was forever was forever changed by Dave Stallworth's humble and unselfish attitude, his supporters are hoping to continue this legacy by supporting bright students for generations to come.
