Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments
NEW YORK TIMES bestseller Winner of the CASEY Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year National Sports Media Association Sports Book of the Year An NPR "Book of the Day" #1 New York Times bestselling author Joe Posnanski is back with a masterful ode to the game: a countdown of 50 of the most memorable moments in baseball's history, to make you fall in love with the sport all over again. Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends, and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It's Willie Mays's catch, Babe Ruth's called shot, and Kirk Gibson's limping home run; the slickest steals; the biggest bombs; and the most triumphant no-hitters. But these are also moments raw with the humanity of the game, the unheralded heroes, the mesmerizing mistakes drenched in pine tar, and every story, from the immortal to the obscure, is told from a unique perspective. Whether of a real fan who witnessed it, or the pitcher who gave up the home run, the umpire, the coach, the opposing player--these are fresh takes on moments so powerful they almost feel like myth. Posnanski's previous book, The Baseball 100, portrayed the heroes and pioneers of the sport, and now, with his trademark wit, encyclopedic knowledge, and acute observations, he gets at the real heart of the game. From nineteenth-century pitchers' duels to breaking the sport's color line in the '40s, all the way to the greatest trick play of the last decade and the slide home that became a meme, Posnanski's illuminating take allows us to rediscover the sport we love--and thought we knew. Why We Love Baseball is an epic that ends too soon, a one-of-a-kind love letter to the sport that has us thrilled, torn, inspired, and always wanting more.
The Search for the Next Mickey Mantle
"The worst curse in life is unlimited potential." - Ken BrettHigh expectations come with being labeled "the next Mickey Mantle."But once the media or an organization utters that phrase, it becomes an albatross. The expectation is that the player will become one of the greatest players of all time-not a good player, not even a star-a superstar of the brightest magnitude.Every player, however, feels the pressure of high expectations. Author Barry Sparks gives the readers a close look into the dynamic challenges some players had trying to meet goals and expectations of others. The physical and psychological struggles that these players faced is an aspect of the game we don't hear enough about. Some of the players featured in this book went on to have solid careers, others were mediocre, some were disappointments or complete busts. One or two may even be headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Most of them, unfortunately, never had the benefit of a sports psychologist to help.Even though Mickey Mantle was the gold standard for superstars, it took him five frustrating years to reach that level. In this book, find out which players who were tabbed "the next Mickey Mantle" could overcome what sportswriter Bob Hertzel called "the curse of talent and the burden of potential."

Baseball Research Journal (Brj), Volume 51 #2
In this issue our cover story looks at the history of "Greenberg Gardens." After playing his whole career in Detroit, in 1947 Hank Greenberg was sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates installed an inner fence in a portion of Forbes Field, reducing the distance down the left field line of the ballpark by 30 feet, with intention of helping Greenberg to hit more home runs. The area between the new fence and the outer wall became known as Greenberg Gardens, and local newspapers kept a tally of how many Garden homers were hit. Greenberg retired after the 1947 season, but the Gardens remained through 1953. ALSO IN THIS ISSUE: "Pitching Against Alzheimer's: A Study of Baseball Reminiscence Programs" by Lou Hernandez, Monte Cely, and Barry Mednick Reminiscence programs focused on music, singing, cinema, art and crafts have become popular offerings to people living with dementia. The first baseball reminiscence program in the US was the Cardinals Reminiscence League, begun in 2011 as a joint effort by the Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis University, the Veteran's Administration, and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum. Since then, baseball reminiscence programs have been founded in Texas, New York, Connecticut, and elsewhere. This paper summarizes the results of the Baseball Memories Research Study launched under the umbrella of SABR's Baseball Memories Chartered Community, studying the effects of these programs on the quality of life for participants and their caregivers. "The Doomed Pilots of 1969: The Results of Advice Ignored" by Andy McCue In the early 1960s, Seattle's city fathers were confident their city was an attractive and growing market. In 1961, the city commissioned a Stanford Research Institute study to assess what was needed to gain major league sports, especially baseball. The think tank's study came back cautiously positive. Attracting major league baseball was possible, the report said, if the city could meet three conditions. It would need to provide a major league quality stadium and the team would need to find support from both the political/financial leadership and the fan base. Ultimately, they would founder on all three, sinking the Seattle Pilots franchise barely after it had left the dock. "Were Pitchers More Likely to Throw at Black Batters? 1947-66" by Jerry Nechal A generally accepted narrative of the early days of baseball integration is that White pitchers deliberately threw at Black batters. Besides the need for statistical confirmation of the anecdotes, there are other important questions to ask: If widespread targeting did happen, how long did it last? Was the practice curtailed as more Black players entered the leagues? The ranking of batters by the number of times hit per season 1947-56 reveals evidence to support the narrative. This study will explore the answers to these questions by examining data covering a longer time period, 1947 through 1966.As well as articles about why fewer triples are hit today than in the past, the forgotten "six-man" variant of baseball, using data visualization on the 2020 season, the tribulations faced by the Phillies when trying to enter the National League, and the remarkable 1919 season of the Klein Chocolate Company baseball team, among others.
Walter Johnson Had No Idea
A dirt farmer in Southern Indiana in the year 1924 chose to name his son after a famous baseball player who would someday enter the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Little did anyone know at the time, including that famous player, just how much that decision would mean to that son and the generations to follow. That was the beginning of a love affair with baseball that would identify this family, a love that would begin with the Washington Senators and move on to Minnesota in 1961. Now five generations in, this family allegiance is still very much alive today. This is a story of the son of that son with the famous name and his love of baseball that was handed down to him. He in turn has passed that love on to his son, who now has a daughter who will hopefully understand this love of the game. Memories are made with the game of baseball, and so many are worth sharing. As the pages of this book are turned, the reader will begin to recognize many of these memories and hopefully be reminded of memories that are part of their lives. Hopefully, the reader will have a better understanding of how generations of a family can be connected by the threads of a baseball.

Zendle's Art of Golf
The Art of Golf is fortunately not one of those books that teach people how to correct their swing. It is an eclectic mix of paintings or drawings done in a naive cartoony style, and fun with it. From the eyes of the world watching the stressed out golfer to the first golf hole at Littlehampton. This is a sport book with a difference. Perhaps not Van Gogh, but definately Zendle

How did Mussolini manage to use the 1934 World Cup to benefit his fascist regime? How did North Korea, with its surprising team, reveal itself to the world in 1966? Why did the match between Kuwait and France in 1982 lead to the first diplomatic arbitration? What was behind the scenes of the 1998 'peace match' between the US and Iran? How and why did Qatar win the 2022 World Cup?In this second volume, K矇vin Veyssi癡re tells 22 new stories in which football, in the particular context of World Cups, has found itself at the heart of international political issues, from the beginnings in 1900 to the Qatari edition of 2022. World Cup 2022, Built on 6500 Skulls and Hate?
The World Cup is the biggest and most prestigious soccer tournament in the world. Held every four years, it features 32 of the best national teams from around the globe. This year, it will be held in Qatar - a country with a dark and troubling past. The World Cup is supposed to be a time of celebration, a competition between the best of the best. But in 2022, the World Cup will be held in Qatar, a country with a shocking record of human rights abuses. How did Qatar managed to secure the bid for the World Cup? By bribing FIFA officials, of course. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Qatar is also guilty of using modern slavery to build its World Cup facilities. Migrant workers from countries like Nepal and India make up a large percentage of the country's population, and they often work in dangerous and abusive conditions. In addition, Qatar has been accused of discriminating against women and LGBTQ+, promoting inequality. Given all of these concerns, it's hard to see how the World Cup can be held in Qatar without creating major ethical problems. Many claim that Qatar is not a country that deserves to host the World Cup. It's clear that those involved have blood on their hands, and it's time for them to take responsibility. Discover how Qatar won the bid to host the World Cup despite allegations of bribery and corruption. Learn about their use of modern slavery and promotion of inequality. And find out if this controversial event will end up being a tragedy or a triumph. Order your copy of this book today to learn all about it!

When Revelation Comes
Named one of the 10 Best Golf Books in 2022 by LINKS MagazineWhen Revelation Comes is the story of one man's search for peace. Along the way, he meets people whose compassion and empathy help him keep going. It's a story about fathers and sons. It's a story of a friendship between two people from different cultures and backgrounds. It's also a story of how a game can be a framework for life.On May 17, 2021, an unthinkable tragedy struck a tight knit family in the small town of Hartselle, Alabama. Jordan, a talented and promising junior golfer, died suddenly of an accidental drug overdose. He was only 21 years old. His father, Jim Hartsell, had spent most of the previous ten years supporting his son's attempt to succeed in the challenging world of junior and college golf. The grief was crushing, and the feeling of guilt overwhelming. When nothing else made sense, the author did the only thing he could think of: take a trip to his beloved Scotland in search for answers.Jim Hartsell had fallen in love with Scottish links golf as a child while watching the 1977 Open Championship at Turnberry, his father's favorite tournament. He and his father went on to take several trips to Scotland together, to places like Dunaverty, Machrihanish, and Cruden Bay. Visiting and studying the lesser-known golf courses of Scotland became a lifelong passion for Hartsell. Along the way, he also fell in love with Scotland and its people. When his life seemed over, that love was reciprocated and became his salvation. When Revelation Comes is a requiem for a lost child, and a parent's search for reasons to continue in the face of crushing grief. It's also a love letter to Scotland: it's golf, culture, and wonderful people. It's a reminder to look to the people and places around you: the answers to your questions may be there. World Cup
The Montevideo inauguration of FIFA World Cup in July 1930, took place with participation of only 13 countries. It was 12 years after, and 10 years before the two World Wars. Centuries of colonial orders had been shattered and the future was unclear. Jules Remet the head of FIFA, worked hard for assembling those national teams in the cold winter season of Uruguay. Ninety years later, ahead of the 22nd World Cup, FIFA has 211 country members, of which 32 of them have qualified to send their teams to Qatar. Throughout these 90 years of evolving international scenes, 21 countries (5 of them twice), have hosted the World Cups in contrasting circumstances. Not only the global situation during one Cup had been different compared with the next, but also the socioeconomic and political conditions of all the host nations have had their own particular issues. As it happened, in the Summer of 1974, I saw a few matches of the 10th World Cup in Munich and Frankfort. Of course, I was interested in football, but, given the terror attacks of 1972 Olympic games in Munich, as a young student of political science, I became fascinated by Germany's atmospheric changes. I have been to other Olympics as well as World Cups in Europe and Americas and studied the history of these two premier tournaments combined with the politics of each hosting country. World Cup of Football, is not the oldest international tournament, but it is one of the few that through it's 90 years history, the transformation of world politics and sport can be studied. This book is a brief review of political and sporting history of the World Cup.

Taking the Shot
The basketball team from Davidson College captivated the country in the 2008 NCAA tournament. It was more than just a Cinderella story. There was Bob McKillop, a coach who preached balance and family. There was Jason Richards, a gritty point guard who went from sitting on the bench to leading the nation in assists. And there was of course a baby-faced, just-turned-20 Stephen Curry, the fledgling superstar who wrote scripture on his sneakers and made shot after shot from all over the court. It led to a singular and unforgettable moment. In Taking the Shot, Michael Kruse, a Davidson graduate and award-winning reporter, tells the tale of hope, trust and togetherness. This is the story of not just the start of the legend of Stephen Curry but of that moment as a whole and why it meant so much to so many. From the book: "It wasn't a feeling of imminent victory. What it was, was an overwhelming feeling of opportunity. The chance. We can win this. It was, for some alums, particularly for those who had been boys during the Lefty years of the 1960s, something like a reawakening of the possibility of national success. Two days after that, late in the second half of the comeback against Georgetown, one fan turned to his left and looked down his row in Raleigh and saw a white-haired alum with a single tear running down his cheek and then turned back to his young son and asked him to please watch this game close."

Small Sided Games in Football
This full-color book features games in small sided games for your team's weekly training sessions. It has been shown that this type of intermittent training method, featuring several short repetitions with recovery in between, is very useful in terms of learning, using time efficiently, and improving the physical, cognitive, technical, and tactical abilities of the players.Varying the number of players, the dimensions of the field, the specific rules, and the duration of the activity, among other elements, will afford you many options when training the 57 activities developed throughout this book. Depending on your team's objectives, you can adapt these activities according to your game model and the opponent you will face in the next match."85% of a player's training session should be focused on 'micro' games, because if you are capable of resolving situations in very small interaction space, you will be able to dominate 'macro' actions when you have time and space".Paco Seirul lo

Victory on Ice
Epic battles, fatal sacrifices, and highly improbable circumstances brought the Stanley Cup to Chicago twice during the 1930s. Long overlooked, the city's 1934 and 1938 championships evoked a sense of triumph and jubilation during the darkness and gloom of the Great Depression. By combining tales of old-time hockey with rare photos and broader elements of history, Victory on Ice recreates a near-century-old landscape, teleporting readers to a bygone era when the Blackhawks' earliest heroes played a brutal game against bitter rivals. Many players and their families lived simple, interconnected lives in small apartments and hotels. Teammates forged a unique camaraderie during long train rides between NHL cities. Salaries were modest, and players without cars took the bus to practices and games at the cavernous and electrifying Chicago Stadium. Underworld figures, intent on fixing games, occasionally threatened players. Experience all the action and excitement in this detailed account of two unforgettable seasons, concluding with one of the greatest Cinderella stories in professional sports.

Whatever It Takes
As the 2022 World Cup nears, this book has lost none of its relevance or power. It remains the only book written by an insider about the corrupt 2018/2022 World Cup bidding process. In the years since the decision to award the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments, many fine legal minds, investigators, journalists and others have attempted to find out just how Russia, and especially Qatar, managed to pull it off.As with almost everything to do with the entire World Cup bidding process conducted by FIFA, there is even more to the story than merely about how two nations won. Much more. This book lifts the lid on how a bid for the greatest show on earth, the FIFA World Cup, works from the inside - an inside that involves what is now known as the murky, corrupt goings-on of world football administration. As US Senator Richard Blumenthal said, comparing FIFA to the mafia "is almost insulting to the mafia". It's the inside story of a losing bid team and the characters around it. It's the inside story of how the 'FIFA Way' - as former US Attorney-General Loretta Lynch referred to it - works. And it shows that when it comes to the greatest prize in world football some people will do whatever it takes.

The Numbers Don't Lie
Throughout much of the highly-successful golfing career of Jack Nicklaus, many players arrived being touted, "the next Nicklaus." However, only one player has taken that mantle head-on to move forward the standard set by Nicklaus - Tiger Woods. Woods' explosive start in competitive golf at an early age propelled him further and faster in many areas over Nicklaus beginning with his junior amateur days. But has Woods succeeded in de-throning Nicklaus? As both players have repeatedly stated that the standard of greatness in golf revolves largely around performance in the major championships, that will be the focus of this book, but not exclusively. While comparing eras is typically regarded as impossible, the purpose of this book is to quantify and place into perspective these two players' records in such a way as to add debate to the subject of who the greatest player thus far has been.
