癒Arriba!
The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary year of Roberto Clemente's final year in major-league baseball. "癒Arriba!" The Heroic Life of Roberto Clemente celebrates his life and his baseball career. The first universally acknowledged Latino inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Clemente played every one of his 18 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He became the 11th player to reach the 3,000-hit milestone, finishing his final season by hitting number 3000 on the season's last day. Named to 15 All-Star Game squads, Clemente also won 12 Gold Gloves, four batting titles, and was the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1966. He was twice a World Series champion, winning with the Pirates in both 1960 and 1971.But off the baseball diamond, Clemente was known for his charitable work. He lost his life on the final day of 1972 while working to provide relief for victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua. He was aboard a plane loaded with relief supplies-the fourth such plane he had helped to stock-and had decided to accompany the flight personally to ensure the supplies were reaching those in need of aid and not merely falling into the hands of profiteers. The plane crashed immediately after takeoff from Puerto Rico, a tragic loss for baseball and the world. This book is the collaborative work of 41 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). Examining Clemente's baseball career, the book includes recaps of many of Clemente's greatest games, as well as chapters on his relationship with the press, his connections to Nicaragua and players such as Monte Irvin, and his continuing effects on players from Latin America as a role model today.

The Cap
2020 Wall Street Journal Holiday Gift Books Selection Today the salary cap is an NBA institution, something fans take for granted as part of the fabric of the league or an obstacle to their favorite team's chances to win a championship. In the early 1980s, however, a salary cap was unheard of. The Cap is a first-of-its-kind depiction of the high-stakes negotiations over the proposed NBA salary cap in 1982-83 and all of the twists and turns through the decades that led the NBA and its players to a novel settlement. From lawsuits filed by its biggest stars to attacks from rival leagues to a messy and unsatisfying relationship with television to a general atmosphere of labor unrest in professional sports, the NBA was undeniably at a crossroads by the early 1980s. With the league led by ascendant David Stern and the players union led by the vastly underappreciated Larry Fleisher, these negotiations occurred amid a tumultuous landscape complete with meddling (and sometimes incompetent) owners and players' growing influence. The Cap is a compelling story that involves notable players, colorful owners, visionary league and union officials, and a sport trying to solidify a bright future despite a turbulent past and present.
The Golden Age of Australian Women's Squash
The game of squash evolved from the school playgrounds in Harrow, in the UK in the mid-19th Century, to all-glass transportable courts in exotic locations. It is now played by over 20 million people in 200 countries. Australian women squash players dominated the world squash scene from 1962 - 2010. Heather McKay led the way with an amazing run of 16 British Open Championships (1962-1977) and two World Championships (1976 and 1979). Other women champions and teams soon followed with Australia being the most successful nation during this period. Today, however, Australia is lagging with no players (male or female) in the world's top 50.This book tells the stories of the extraordinary women champions and teams that emerged from 1962 until 2010-The Golden Age. How did this Golden Age begin and continue for decades? What are the reasons for its decline? Now that squash has been included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics the future of the game has never been brighter internationally. Australia must embrace this opportunity to regain its competitive position. The Golden Age of Australian Women's Squash recounts their stories and results, hopefully to inspire the next generation to 'take over the reins' and succeed on the world stage. The author was fortunate to begin her career at the same time as the legendary Heather McKay, AO, and has interviewed key players from many decades to answer these questions. Heather's story and many others are a must-read for the younger generation who aspire to succeed on the world stage. It will also be of interest to former players, at all levels, and those in the community who are interested in Australian sporting history.
Soccer
It's all too easy for coaches to follow the natural forward-moving mentality. When it comes to the game of soccer, the forward-moving mentality influences a more physical approach to the game and to most training concepts. This physical approach in turn has the effect of reducing the level of soccer skills required and creates a second-ball, or long-ball game mentality. THE FIRST-BALL GAMEThe more skilful game of soccer, known as the pass and move game or the first-ball game, requires a more technical approach to the development of the player. This approach uses a combination of technical and physical solutions. The forward moving mentality is combined with a lateral mentality which results in a player with a much higher capability, on both the technical and physical side of the game, hence the ability to play all requirements related to the first-ball game. The lateral based nine-cone placement solution to player development, for example, would test the technical and physical ability and therefore the playing standard of any player.
The Seventh Babe
When Babe Ragland makes the hapless Boston Red Sox in a Spring Training tryout, he becomes baseball's "seventh Babe." He soon establishes himself as an acrobatic third baseman, and his rookie fright is soon replaced by a fierce competitiveness and a chip on his shoulder the size of the Green Monster.Ragland clashes with his teammates, the entire American League, and finally the mighty Kenesaw "Mountain" Landis, which results in his sudden ejection from the major leagues - the only place he ever wanted to be. But soon Babe joins up with a barnstorming team of black players who live difficult lives and play in horrible conditions, but who share Ragland's passion and artistry for the game. When the glamor of playing for the Red Sox and pleasures of a beautiful young wife come calling, the seventh Babe must choose between the fame and comfort of the major leagues and a hard life of pick-up games on the fringes of society.Jerome Charyn is one of America's greatest and most prolific living novelists. The Seventh Babe, originally published in 1979, is a triumph of literary passion and imagination, an unforgettable tale that blends the harsh and dirty reality of early 20th century baseball and America with a magical reality every bit as uplifting as W. P. Kinsella's. Charyn's prose style is clean, concise, and impossible to imitate, and the pace of the story never slows down. The Seventh Babe is a classic waiting on the sidelines to be recognized for what it is: one of the greatest baseball novels ever written.
Saint Woody
The Ohio State Buckeyes have been a powerhouse in college football for decades, with numerous national championships and NFL draftees to their credit. With such a successful history, it's no wonder that the passion for Ohio State football has reached a level of devotion that has religious overtones. Saint Woody is a Bill Bryson-style look at Ohio State football and the spiritual fanaticism that surrounds it. Bob Hunter tracks the development of this powerhouse program from its earliest days to its heights under Woody Hayes, the de facto king of Ohio State football, and beyond. Hayes led the team to three national championships and a record of 205-61-10 over a twenty-eight-year period and was at the heart of the Ten-Year War, a particularly intense period in the infamous Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. Hunter also looks at the present state of Buckeye football and the team's scarlet-and-gray-clad followers, as well as its legion of detractors, who voted Ohio State as the "most hated" college team in a nationwide survey. America loves--and hates--a winner. Irreverent, honest, insightful, and always entertaining, Saint Woody will appeal to anyone whose spirit has ever lifted when hearing that famous cry "Go Bucks!"Bob Hunter is a retired sports columnist for the Columbus Dispatch. He is the coauthor of The Buckeyes: A Story of Ohio State Football and author of Chic: The Extraordinary Rise of Ohio State Football and the Tragic Schoolboy Athlete Who Made It Happen and Buckeye Basketball.

Moving the Chains
We remember the 1966 birth of the New Orleans Saints as a shady quid pro quo between the NFL commissioner and a Louisiana congressman. Moving the Chains is the untold story of the athlete protest that necessitated this backroom deal, as New Orleans scrambled to respond to a very public repudiation of the racist policies that governed the city. In the decade that preceded the 1965 athlete walkout, a reactionary backlash had swept through Louisiana, bringing with it a host of new segregation laws and enough social strong-arming to quash any complaints, even from suffering sports promoters. Nationwide protests had assailed the Tulane Green Wave, the Sugar Bowl, and the AFL's preseason stop-offs, and only legal loopholes and a lot of luck kept football alive in the city. Still, live it did, and in January 1965, locals believed they were just a week away from landing their own pro franchise. All they had to do was pack Tulane Stadium for the city's biggest audition yet, the AFL All-Star game. Ultimately, all fifty-eight Black and white teammates walked out of the game to protest the town's lingering segregation practices and public abuse of Black players. Following that, love of the gridiron prompted and excused something out of sync with the city's branding: change. In less than two years, the Big Easy made enough progress to pass a blitz inspection by Black and white NFL officials and receive the long-desired expansion team. The story of the athletes whose bravery led to change quickly fell by the wayside. Locals framed desegregation efforts as proof that the town had been progressive and tolerant all along. Furthermore, when a handshake between Pete Rozelle and Hale Boggs gave America its first Super Bowl and New Orleans its own club, the city proudly clung to that version of events, never admitting the cleanup even took place. As a result, Moving the Chains is the first book to reveal the ramifications of the All-Stars' civil resistance and to detail the Saints' true first win.
The Football Book of Why (and Who, What, When, Where, and How)
Why is a football field sometimes called a gridiron? Who are some of the best left-handed quarterbacks ever? Who was the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl? Why do players form a huddle when plays are called? When did quarterback sacks become an official statistic? What is the record for the most passes thrown by a quarterback in a game? This book provides a slew of questions and in-depth answers concerning the traditions, rules, records, and history of pro football (and more). From the early days of football to the hugely popular game seen today, Wayne Stewart answers questions even the most knowledgeable fan may have pondered. Whether the topic is quarterbacks or coaches, famous "firsts" or memorable moments, if a Who, What, When, Where, Why, or How? question is on your mind, this is the book for you.
Women's World Soccer 2022
This book aims to be a definitive reference source for international women's soccer. This is the second edition of what will hopefully become an annual event, and it has been updated with results from the last twelve months. It starts with coverage of the major worldwide tournaments: World Cup, Olympic Games, youth World Cups and some of the major invitational tournaments, many of which have been added for this edition including the new Arnold Clark Cup in England and the Mundialito from the 1980s. Then each continental confederation is covered, detailing their championships and results of their youth tournaments, then a list of the nations of that confederation. For each nation their tournament achievements are listed as well as a list of all known competitive international matches. For Europe, results of the UEFA Champions League are included, and I have attempted to include league champions and cup winners for each European nation. For this edition, I have added the unofficial 1979 European Championship, which was not organised by UEFA. Similarly, for South America, results of the Copa Libertadores are included, and I have attempted to include league champions for each South American nation. The cut-off point is the end of July 2022, to include the continental championships of Europe, South America, North and Central America, Africa and Oceania, which fill a lot of the qualification places for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Bleeding Green
The Hartford Whalers were a beloved hockey team from their founding in 1972 as the New England Whalers. Playing in the National Hockey League's smallest market and arena after the World Hockey Association merger in 1979, they struggled in a division that included both the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens--but their fans were among the NHL's most loyal. In 1995 new owners demanded a new arena and, when it fell through, moved the team to North Carolina, rebranding as the Hurricanes. Unlike fellow franchises that have folded or relocated with little fanfare, the Whalers' fan base stayed with the team, which remains as popular as ever. Even though more than two decades have come and gone since Connecticut's only professional sports team moved, nobody has truly forgotten the Whalers, their history, and their unique--and still highly profitable--logo. And while the NHL continues to thrive without them, their impact stretches far beyond the ice and into an entirely different cultural arena. Christopher Price grew up in Connecticut as a diehard Whalers fan, experiencing firsthand the team's bond with the community. Drawing from all aspects of the team's past, he tells the uncensored history of Connecticut's favorite professional sports franchise. Part sports history and part civic history, Bleeding Green shows vividly why the Whalers, despite an inglorious past and a future that unexpectedly vanished, remain firmly embedded in the American milieu and have had a lasting impact on not only the NHL but the sports landscape as a whole.

The Immaculate Reception
Greg T. Walker felt like it was high time to finally tell the tale of the Immaculate Reception and the 1972 Pittsburgh Steelers. The greatest play and moment in football history, and the team that launched the Steeler's dynastyIn the words of those who played, coached, refereed, and covered the 1972 season, team, and play. What happened? People have been asking that question ever since. The play had lasted for just 17 seconds. Tens of thousands witnessed it, but nobody saw it. The Immaculate Reception is a myth; a miracle; a cottage industry; a conspiracy; a crime; and a detective story. But before it became all these things, it was just a football play. The last desperate hope of a team and a town that had always been destined to lose. It's been 50 years since Franco Harris worked what's been called the 'Miracle of all Miracles, ' and the play has been a mystery ever since. This is a story of a play that has lived a life of its own. -Narrator: A Football Life: The Immaculate Reception-It was tremendous. Everybody in the world said they saw it live. They did see it on replay because they kept showing it. I thought, and still do, that it was the greatest play ever. -Art Rooney Jr.-It was the defining moment in Steelers' history. -Barry Pearson Steelers-The most memorable moment in sports. -Bruce Van Dyke Steelers-That one play altered the course of the Steelers' franchise. -Franco Harris Steelers-The Immaculate Deception. The public was deceived. The officials were deceived. We got deceived. -George Atkinson Raiders-In the greatest games, every little thing counts; one little thing changes and the game is completely different. They won. I don't know if it was fair and square, but they won. And we are still talking about it 50 years later. That's a beautiful thing. -Phil Villapiano Raiders-That play, if you are a Steeler fan, you believe in it. If you're a sinner like them damn Raiders, then you'll never accept it. So, it's almost like the Bible: A myth to some, and a faith to others. -Frenchy Fuqua Steelers-

George Mitrovich's Baseball Notes
From the Author: "It's true, as we are often reminded by cynics of the sport, that baseball is a business - and every day when free agency is rampant and players go to the highest bidder, the business of baseball cannot be denied. But if that's the beginning and the end of one's understanding of the world's greatest game, it reveals an elementary ignorance of something so uniquely American that our national experience cannot be understood independent of it...but what we cherish about the game, its beauty, poetry, and nuances, are, in the end, what separates the business of baseball from the game of baseball."We may be indifferent to the first reality but we hold to the second as surely as we cling to any fundamental essential in the American character; for it defines us and elevates us to a level higher than what is otherwise the commonplace of our existence."- George Mitrovich, Elysian Fields Quarterly: The Baseball Review, Volume 22, Number 1, 2005 "His versatility was exceeded only by his passion; and, lucky for us one of those passions was baseball. In reading George's Baseball Notes you could be sure of one thing - George was often wrong but never in doubt and he provided a daily source of information, insight, and informed opinion. We miss him and his Baseball Notes very much."-Larry Lucchino, Boston Red Sox President/CEO EmeritusMy Friend George Mitrovich"DC" Boomed the voice on the other end of the telephone...."I need you in Chicago. Dr. Charles can't make it, you will be terrific!!!" Well let's face it, we both knew that I wasn't an adequate substitute for the great Dr. Charles Steinberg of the Boston Red Sox and yet George knew my response: "Of Course"...."DC" Boomed the voice on the other end of the telephone... - "I need you in San Diego - All-Star Game Luncheon - Peter Gammons had to cancel - You will be terrific!!!" We both knew that I wasn't an adequate substitute for the great Peter Gammons and yet George also knew my response."Of Course""DC" a long unusual pause, "I want you to be a eulogist. The outcome is dire but I am resolute. " And with that and a tear in my eye, we both knew my response.I met George Mitrovich through the Great Fenway Park Writers Series. His ability to host, entertain, regale stories of his life and make everyone in the room feel included and important was uncanny. An elegant gentleman with a zest for life and for the people he met along the way, the likes of which we shall not soon see again. I thank him for his friendship, for the friends I met through him, and the friends of friends who are now also my friends. With great admiration, your friend, DC-Donna Cohen, Great Fenway Park Writers SeriesIn tribute to our friend, George Mitrovich (1935-2019)A man of surpassing intellect, opinions, passions and pursuits, including but hardly limited to the vagaries of politics, civics and baseball, George Mitrovich was an immutable force in San Diego's civic fabric for more than a half-century and perhaps longer.Mr. Mitrovich died July 24, 2019, at age 83, days before he was to turn 84.Aside from baseball, which George rightly viewed as analogous to life itself, he was a whirlwind of interests and expertise on innumerable topics that freely entered his every-day conversations at the slightest provocation. His was a world without limits on whatever he deemed intellectually stimulating and worthy of impassioned dialogue and further discussion, his sharp wit and high-pitched laugh never far behind.A life-long Democrat who prided himself on his reasoned outlook and who valued respectful give-and-take with friends who might inexplicably hold opposing views, George earned his political stripes with several national figures, led by his role as press aide to the presidential campaign of 1968 of Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

As a lifelong follower of Everton FC, Bob has witnessed many shifts in club dynamics and, in his new book Everton: The Fans he traces the history, the heartbreak and the undying hope which lies at the heart of all football clubs and their devout legions of followers. New Kids in the World Cup
In 1990, though no one knew it then, a fearless group of players changed the sport of soccer in the United States forever. Young, bronzed, and mulleted, they were America's finest athletes in a sport that America loved to hate. Even sportswriters rooted against them. Yet this team defied massive odds and qualified for the World Cup, making possible America's current obsession with the world's most popular game. In this era, a U.S. Soccer Federation head coach had a better-paying day job as a black-tie restaurant waiter. Players earned $20 a day. The crowd at home games cheered for their opponent, and the fields were even mismarked. In Latin America the U.S. team bus had a machine gun turret mounted on the back, locals would sabotage their hotel, and in the stadiums spectators would rain coins, batteries, and plastic bags of urine down on the American players. The world considered the U.S. team to be total imposters--the Milli Vanilli of soccer. Yet on the biggest stage of all, in the 1990 World Cup, this undaunted American squad and their wise coach earned the adoration of Italy's star players and their fans in a gladiator-like match in Rome's deafening Stadio Olimpico. From windswept soccer fields in the U.S. heartland to the CIA-infested cauldron of Central America and the Caribbean, behind the recently toppled Iron Curtain and into the great European soccer cathedrals, New Kids in the World Cup is the origin story of modern American soccer in a time when power ballads were inescapable and mainstream America was discovering hip-hop. It's the true adventure of America's most important soccer team, which made possible everything that's come since--including America finally falling in love with soccer. The Ball Player
This book is about my father and his peers who grew up poor in rural North Carolina from the early to the late 1900s. The backdrop of these stories is the Carolina Textile Baseball League where James M. Whittington, Sr played from 1926 to 1954 and then further umpired, coached, and mentored many individual ball-players for another 40 years. He became a local legend in North and South Carolina, specifically the Piedmont Region. James Whittington circumstances molded him and his friends as rough men. He lived his life as a tough man but eventually found God and salvation later in life.
Flipbook American Football
FLIPBOOK AMERICAN FOOTBALL American football evolved in the United States, originating from the sports of soccer and rugby. The first American football match was played on November 6, 1869, between two college teams, Rutgers and Princeton, using rules based on the rules of soccer at the time. A set of rule changes drawn up from 1880 onward by Walter Camp, the "Father of American Football", established the snap, the line of scrimmage, eleven-player teams, and the concept of downs. Later rule changes legalized the forward pass, created the neutral zone and specified the size and shape of the football. The sport is closely related to Canadian football, which evolved in parallel with and at the same time as the American game, although its rules were developed independently from those of Camp. Most of the features that distinguish American football from rugby and soccer are also present in Canadian football. The two sports are considered the primary variants of gridiron football.

Rising SONS
Until the past 20 years, Southern Oregon University football does not have a storied history. Aside from its lone national championship in 2014, the program has little tradition and few legends. Most of its history has been either lost or ignored in the annals of time. The program has played second fiddle in its school to more successful sports like wrestling and basketball. But to look back on the program that predated McNeal and the 1927 season, the story reads like a Greek tragedy: some triumphs, but many more setbacks.
108 Stitches
With its sprawl of teams in major, minor, and independent leagues, with its narrative interwoven with our national history, with its catalog of larger-than-life characters, baseball is always a story. The story of baseball is often told by the players and the managers whose faces we recognize. Those storytellers are always men. But this baseball story is a girl's coming-of-age memoir. Addie Beth Denton's 108 Stitches reminds us of the women and girls whose lives were shaped by America's national pastime. Denton's father and uncle were baseball men: her uncle, Harry Craft, was a manager for major league franchises in Kansas City, Chicago, and Houston. As a minor league coach, Harry Craft was Mickey Mantle's first manager. 108 Stitches captures the sights, smells, and sensations of growing up with baseball from Addie Beth's unique vantage point. There are home runs, no-hitters, cantankerous old-timers, and ambitious young gunners, but there are also warmhearted family stories, adolescent melodramas, and the multifaceted experiences of girlhood lived within a man's world. Written for fans young and old, male and female, Addie Beth Denton's memoir stitches together her heartfelt memories of a nostalgic period in American and baseball history.
Breaking The Barriers-The Incredible Story of Tennis, Race and Innovation
Dr. Dale Caldwell, in this groundbreaking book, shares the stories of some of the most extraordinary people who have ever been connected to the amazing sport of tennis. A Perfect Storm
Experience the Journey Cyclone superfan Kyle Oppenhuizen wrote about his journey as an Iowa State football fan told through the lens of attending every game during the highly anticipated, always entertaining 2021 season. What he hoped was going to be a book about watching a championship football team turned into something more. It's about the love he has for his favorite team - the anticipation, the ups and downs along the way, and the irrationality of it all. It is about making new friends, strengthening relationships and gaining a greater perspective about what it means to be a fan. Being a Cyclone football fan isn't perfect, but as Oppenhuizen discovered, it is a perfect storm.
It’s Better to Be Feared
Over two unbelievable decades, the New England Patriots were not only the NFL's most dominant team, but also--and by far--the most secretive. How did they achieve and sustain greatness--and what were the costs? In It's Better to Be Feared, Seth Wickersham, one of the country's finest long form and investigative sportswriters, tells the full, behind-the-scenes story of the Patriots, capturing the brilliance, ambition, and vanity that powered and ultimately unraveled them. Based on hundreds of interviews conducted since 2001, Wickersham's chronicle is packed with revelations, taking us deep into Bill Belichick's tactical ingenuity and Tom Brady's unique mentality while also reporting on their divergent paths in 2020, including Brady's run to the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Raucous, unvarnished, and definitive, It's Better to Be Feared is an instant classic of American sportswriting in the tradition of Michael Lewis, David Maraniss, and David Halberstam.
Banana Ball
The Savannah Bananas have peeled back the game of baseball and made it fun again. This is their story. For his entire childhood, Jesse Cole dreamed of pitching in the Majors. Now, he has a life in baseball that he could have only imagined: he met the love of his life in the industry; they shaped Savannah, Georgia's professional team into the league champion Savannah Bananas; and now the Bananas have restyled baseball itself into something all their own: Banana Ball. Fast, fun, and outrageously entertaining, Banana Ball brings fans right into the game. The Bananas throw out a first banana rather than a ball. Their first-base coach dances to "Thriller" or Britney between innings. Players run into the crowd to hand out roses. And the rules themselves are bananas: if a fan catches a foul ball it's an out; and players might go to bat on stilts or wearing a banana costume. And their fans absolutely love it. But the reason this team is on the forefront of a movement is less about the play on the field and more about the atmosphere that the team culture creates. For the first time in this book, Jesse reveals the ideas and experiences that allowed him to reimagine America's oldest sport by creating a phenomenon that is helping fans fall in love with the game all over again. This is a story that's bigger than baseball and bigger than the yellow tuxedo Jesse wears as the "ringmaster" of every game. And to understand the movement, you have to understand the story at its core. In Jesse's telling, it takes heart, innovation, and joy (and a bit of tropical fruit) to make something wholly original out of one of America's great traditions. His story is part Moneyball, part Field of Dreams, part The Greatest Showman. It is a personal story, a creativity story, and the story of a business scrapping for every success. And it has several distinct love stories--love stories like Jesse and his father, Jesse and his wife, the team and the sport of baseball, the team and the fans. This is Jesse calling his dad from the outfield after each Bananas game, and putting unending creativity into a team with the ultimate goal of bringing the Bananas to the professional ballparks he himself never got to play in. This is his story of baseball, love, leadership, and going just a bit bananas for all.

The National Pastime, 2022
"If I learned one thing in my travels, it's that even when a ballpark is gone, sometimes someone puts up some kind of marker so folks will have something to look at to remember what's gone. A plaque, a sign, a section of wall. This edition of The National Pastime is my marker." So writes editor Cecilia M. Tan in her introduction to the 2022 issue of The National Pastime, featuring 20 articles delving into the history of minor league baseball. In 2020, minor league baseball as we knew it changed drastically with the elimination of 42 teams and "restructuring." But the minors have always been prone to upheaval and change. This issue of The National Pastime looks at the minors from the nineteenth century through the present and seems to show that the only thing that stays the same in the minor leagues, is that things are always changing. Dennis Snelling brings us the account of a team so short-lived, they not only didn't play a full season, their team records were lost. We also have not one but two articles about Black ballplayers playing on White minor league teams--something that couldn't happen in the American or National Leagues at the time--with Alan D. Cohen's account of Billy Holland in Connecticut in 1906, and Thomas Merrick's article about a 1932 team that included Wilbur "Bullet" Rogan and other players in Jamestown, North Dakota. Stories also tread the expected minor-league ground of wacky gate attractions, pranks, and traditions, including a reminiscence of a running joke from the Texas League by Marshall Adesman, the history of Reading's "Pony Night" (in which a lucky fan went home with a live horse at the end of the game) by Brian C. Engelhardt, Steven M. Glassman recounts Dave Bresnahan's infamous "hidden potato trick," and Matthew R.C. Bosen reveals the unique method the Beloit Sky Carp recently used to recruit their newest announcer. The issue even has a smattering of sabermetrics, with a look at park effects by Will Christensen and an examination of minor league Triple Crown winners by Herm Krabbenhoft, among several other articles, including a look back at Rick Wolff's groundbreaking book What's a Harvard Boy Like You Doing in the Bushes, the 1948 Duluth Dukes bus crash, and the origins of the player draft in the nineteenth century.

The Cleveland Browns All-Time All-Stars
Let's say you're the coach of the Cleveland Browns, deciding which players should start in a Super Bowl matchup against the toughest team in the NFC. But instead of choosing from the current roster, you have every player in the team's 75-year history in your locker room. Who starts at quarterback: Hall-of-Famer Otto Graham, steady Brian Sipe, deadly accurate Bernie Kosar, or dynamic Baker Mayfield? At kicker, do you play Hall of Famer Lou Groza or 14-year-veteran Phil Dawson? Which players get the start at wide receiver? Dante Lavelli, Paul Warfield, Braylon Edwards, Ray Renfro, or Jarvis Landry? Combining career stats, common sense, and a host of intangibles, veteran sportswriter Roger Gordon imagines an embarrassment of riches and sets the all-time All-Star Browns lineup for the ages.
