You Say What?
This book contains a series of articles that were written by the author for publication in the "Bugle" a monthly newspaper published by an old friend Col. Tom Noreen, U.S. Army retired, in Cedar Springs, Michigan, and the American Cooner Magazine a coonhound magazine published monthly in Sesser, Illinois. The articles run the gamut from human interest stories, memories, hounds & hunting, life lesson stories from around the globe.
Sixty Years behind the Mast
Although the theme of Sixty Years behind the Mast is sailing, blue-water cruising in particular, it is much more than just about sailing. First, it is hoped the book will be added to the libraries of many blue-water sailors. For example, on the author's forty-foot yacht, AEOLUS, its library included three or four dozen sailing books including Joshua Slocum's Sailing Alone Around the World (1894) and Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast (1840). Dana's book is an excellent description of the eighty-four-foot Boston brig, PILGRIM, trading with the ranchers in "Alta California" in the 1830s. A good library consisting of many other well-known sailing/adventure stories is essential on a cruising yacht. Second, Sixty Years behind the Mast also should be included in the libraries of armchair adventurers who dream of making voyages to the distant islands in the South Pacific. The romantic South Pacific is famous for its out-of-the-box authors, artists, beachcombers, lone sailors, and scallywags, such as Robert Louis Stevenson (In the South Seas); James Michener (Tales of the South Pacific); impressionist painter, Paul Gauguin, who lived out his tragic life on Hiva Oa, an island of the Marquesas Archipelago; and American musician, Eddie Lund (and his Tahitians), sometimes referred to as "the Irving Berlin of island music." The Romance of the South Pacific was also well illustrated by famed film director John Ford's movie, The Hurricane (1937), staring Dorothy Lamour and Jon Hall. Third, Sixty Years behind the Mast is a good reference manual for parents who have adolescent children. Several weeks, even just one week of blue-water sailing on a small boat, is an amazing way to help children successfully navigate the rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood. Cruising motivates a person to become self-reliant, builds self-confidence, enhances compassion, helps develop the skills required for effective teamwork and leadership, and makes one more sensitive to nature and sympathetic to the environment.
Leaving the Bubble - Into Blue Depths
It has always been my dream to become a scuba diving instructor and teach diving abroad for a while. In 2019 my dream came true when I embarked on a journey to work as a scuba diving instructor in Ibiza and Thailand for one year. This book is the story of one of the best and enriching years of my life on one hand, and a deep reflection on all the powerful life lessons, which emerged during this one year, on the other.
Confessions of a Shooting Fishing Man
When Laurence Catlow, a classics master at a Cumbrian boarding school, sees a beautiful pheasant in flight, he wants to reach for his gun.In this diary of his sporting year, he asks himself, between days on the local rivers and shoots, why this is so.His answers are surprising, controversial and convincing. They provide an articulate response to the anti-fieldsports arguments, and he presents them in an entertaining, frank and amusing manner.Throughout 1995, Laurence's diary records his hopes of buying some precipitous shooting ground in the Pennines, his fishing days on the Eden, Wharfe and other rivers, the arrival of a second gundog and days spent together on shoots. All this activity is interspersed with Laurence's quest for his true motives in killing what he most loves. He looks at foxhunting, vegetarianism, man as a hunter, man as created in God's image and man as a creature doomed, himself, to die.Nearly 25 years later, this diary remains highly topical, thought-provoking and original. yet its tone is also very human and it comes from the pen of a true nature-lover.
The Marlinspike Sailor
Hervey Garrett Smith, born in 1896 in Long Island, New York was a graduate of the Pratt Institute and was an artist and illustrator who provided illustrations for such publications as "National Geographic" and boating magazines. He also wrote several books on the traditional arts of the sailor, such as "Boat Carpentry", "The Small Boat Sailor's Bible", and "The Arts of the Sailor". Considered one of the foremost marine illustrators of his day, Smith's work is still regarded today as a great resource on sailing related rope work and rigging. First published in 1949, "The Marlinspike Sailor" is an invaluable resource on the subject of rope use in sailing. A sailor and boat builder himself, Smith named this work after the indispensible sailor's tool, the marlinspike, a short often tapered and rounded metal tool used in splicing rope, tying, and untying of knots. Subjects such as essential sailing knots, whippings, splicing, and sennit making, are all discussed in this work. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the second enlarged edition published in 1952.
Boy Scouts Handbook
Published in 1911, "Boy Scouts Handbook: The First Edition", compiled by the Boy Scouts of America, is the immensely popular and widely influential guide for young boys entering the organization. The first edition of the "Handbook" appeared a year after the Boy Scouts were formed in 1910 and offered practical advice on all manner of outdoor activities, including swimming, camping, hiking, sailing, woodcrafting, and outdoor survival techniques. The "Handbook" also explained how the Boy Scout organization worked and provided direction on how Scouts should be well-rounded, informed, chivalrous, resourceful, and honorable. While some of the information and advice reflects the time in which the book was written and the scientific knowledge available, the first edition of the "Handbook" endures as a helpful and detailed guide for many skills that have changed little over the past century, such as horseback riding, building a fire, and identifying trees and plant life that can aid in outdoor survival. The Boy Scouts had a profound influence on generations of young men who went on to become national heroes, presidents, and leading scientific figures and the "Boy Scouts Handbook: The First Edition" remains a valuable resource for understanding the organization and its goals. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
The Chief and I
As a young boy, the author met a retired schooner captain by chance. They both admired an abandoned one-hundred-foot schooner hull on a sandbar near the captain's home in Tampa Bay. The captain assured the boy that the hull could be salvaged and repaired to sail again, but it never was. Years later the author remembered the vision that the captain had about rebuilding the hull. The author was working for the Panama Canal Company, where an unused ferro-cement schooner belonging to Explorer Ship 8 of the Boy Scouts of America was sitting idle at a dock. Pushed by his teenage son to "get the Chief fixed up" so the scouts could sail her, the author took on the project. Finding a way to raise money for repairs was the first challenge. After that, it was a day-by-day struggle to bring the schooner back to a seaworthy condition. This book documents the hard work, pressure, and growth that both the teenagers and the participating adults went through as they brought an impossible dream into reality. The Chief participated in the tall ship parade of the US Bicentennial, July 4, 1976, in New York harbor and then sailed back to Panama.

Ranen wrote and published stories from his life so his friends could visit these places, meet these characters, and experience the lifestyle. This is a sailing voyage worth taking.
Sport and Christianity
Sport and Christianity examines sport and Christianity from a variety of historical perspectives, with the main focus on the period from the nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. The book is not limited to a narrow definition of Christianity, but rather encompasses a wide range of denominations, related philosophies and viewpoints. The contributors are international, and the geographical range of their chapters is equally wide, extending, for example, from China to Argentina, and from Australia to Poland. Some chapters focus on a single sport such as gymnastics, soccer or Australian Rules football, while others look at modern sports more generally. Different methodological and theoretical approaches have been adopted, as contributors enter the debates on, for example, cultural imperialism, gender, changing Christian attitudes to leisure, or the intersection between religion, politics and sport. Demonstrating the many-sided significance of the relationship between Christianity and Sport, this book is ideal for scholars of Sport History and Christianity. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.
Match Fixing and Sport
Match-Fixing and Sport studies match-fixing in historical perspective, revealing how match-fixing has always been a major sporting continuity, alongside another longstanding continuity, a widely-held belief in a mythical recent past of pristine purity. The volume begins with a brief overview of match-fixing's global contemporary contexts, the broad range of sports where it now surfaces, increased recognition of its moral, social, and economic threat, and the varied responses of leading sports organizations, legal gambling operators, police forces, governmental departments, and regulators. The following chapters explore the challenges of finding any reliable evidence of match-fixing in the past. An overview shows that match-fixing has been a major and substantial longstanding historical continuity in sport, usually but not always is linked to gambling and sporting materialism. Examples are brought forward to show that it could be found in Ancient Greece and Egypt and was widespread across the early modern and modern periods around the globe. Overall, the volume assists scholars by suggesting some key questions which a future agenda for the historical study of match-fixing might address.Revealing how high-stakes betting, dishonest dealings and suspicious performances can be found throughout history, Match-Fixing and Sport will be of great interest to scholars of Sport History and Sport Ethics. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Heroes
What makes HEROES unique is that author Ralph Wimbish puts himself into many of his stories, a perspective we do not often see in sports writing today. Wimbish's recollections of the sports figures he met as a youngster and later in a 37-year career as a newspaperman make for riveting reading. His father was Dr. Ralph M. Wimbish, a prominent figure in the NAACP's efforts to rid the South of racial discrimination in the late '50s and early '60s. Wimbish the writer has some interesting observations and previously untold stories about Black athletes such as Jackie Robinson, Curt Flood, Elston Howard, Tiger Woods and others. HEROES is a collection of stories about stories - sitting with 1956 perfect-game pitcher Don Larsen while watching David Cone's 1999 perfect game is a perfect example. These are stories you wish you had been able to read earlier. Now you can.

Its spells could seduce us and stun the senses. After having traveled these roads, life changes and the world is seen from another perspective.

The Optimist
An "excellent" (The New York Times) modern tribute to an ageless pastime, and a practical guide to the art, philosophy, and rituals of fly fishing, by an expert, lifelong angler. In The Optimist, David Coggins makes a case for the skills and sensibility of an enduring sport and shares the secrets, frustrations, and triumphs of the great tradition of fly fishing, which has captivated anglers worldwide. Written in wry, wise, and keenly observed prose, each chapter focuses on a specific place, fish, and skill. Few individuals, for example, have the visual acuity required to catch the nearly invisible bonefish of the Bahamas flats. Or the patience to land the elusive Atlantic salmon, "the fish of a thousand casts," in eastern Canada. Pursuing these challenges, Coggins, "a confirmed obsessive," travels to one fishing paradise after another, including the great rivers of Patagonia, private chalk streams in England, remote ponds in Maine, and New York City's Jamaica Bay. In each setting, he chronicles his fortunes and misfortunes with honesty and humor while meditating on how fishing teaches focus, inner stillness, and a connection to the natural world. Perfect for the novice, the enthusiastic amateur, and the devoted angler alike, The Optimist offers a practical path to enlightenment while providing "a rueful, thoughtful, and very funny examination of an elegant obsession" (Jay McInerney).

Dumb Luck and the Kindness of Strangers
Witty, shrewd, and always a joy to read, John Gierach, "America's best fishing writer" (Houston Chronicle) and favorite streamside philosopher, has earned the following of "legions of readers who may not even fish but are drawn to his musings on community, culture, the natural world, and the seasons of life" (Kirkus Reviews). "After five decades, twenty books, and countless columns, [John Gierach] is still a master" (Forbes). Now, in his latest original collection, Gierach shows us why fly-fishing is the perfect antidote to everything that is wrong with the world. "Gierach's deceptively laconic prose masks an accomplished storyteller...His alert and slightly off-kilter observations place him in the general neighborhood of Mark Twain and James Thurber" (Publishers Weekly). In Dumb Luck and the Kindness of Strangers, Gierach looks back to the long-ago day when he bought his first resident fishing license in Colorado, where the fishing season never ends, and just knew he was in the right place. And he succinctly sums up part of the appeal of his sport when he writes that it is "an acquired taste that reintroduces the chaos of uncertainty back into our well-regulated lives." Lifelong fisherman though he is, Gierach can write with self-deprecating humor about his own fishing misadventures, confessing that despite all his experience, he is still capable of blowing a strike by a fish "in the usual amateur way." "Arguably the best fishing writer working" (The Wall Street Journal), Gierach offers witty, trenchant observations not just about fly-fishing itself but also about how one's love of fly-fishing shapes the world that we choose to make for ourselves.

Happy Outdoors
Hunting and fishing is a way of life in South Carolina. This is especially true in the low country. This part of our state is a sportsman's paradise. I know that for a fact since this area is my home. I've spent countless hours in the woods waiting on a buck and just as many on the coast searching for redfish. This time represents a large chunk of my life. It seems like my inspiration for this book would have come from the solitude of nature. I'm sure it has for many other writers. However, this one was born on the Dawhoo River with the help of one perfectly timed conversation. It was a lively talk to say the least. Happy Outdoors captures that fun conversation and plenty of outdoor tales. Clifford Jardine Ray III (Dean) grew up in Denmark, South Carolina. He was blessed from day one to live on the family farm. The farm offered him unlimited hunting opportunities and free time in the outdoors. Dean graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology. He now lives in Beech Island, South Carolina with his wife, Lisa, and their two boys. When the boys aren't playing sports, you can often find the family swimming on the Edisto River.

Rough Seas
A trawlerman's life was hard, often up against bad weather, rough seas and black frosts, although on calm days it was a pleasure to be at sea. In this eventful memoir, deep-sea trawlerman James Greene relates his life at sea, from his childhood when his father would take him out in some of the worst gales and hurricanes imaginable to his early career as a deckhand learner, obtaining his skipper's ticket, and the many experiences - both disastrous and otherwise - to occur throughout his time at sea. During his career he was involved in ship collisions and fires, arrested for poaching, fired upon by Icelandic gunboats, in countless storms and even swept overboard in icy conditions off the Russian coast. The British trawling industry is largely a bygone age and people are beginning to forget the adventures, hardships and joys that characterised this most dangerous of professions. This book seeks to keep the memories of a once great industry alive.
Voyage of the Liberdade
Captain Slocum's South American sailing adventureAmerican mariner Joshua Slocum is best remembered for his 1895 solo circumnavigation of the world and the bestselling book, now a classic of sailing literature, that ensued, 'Sailing Alone Around the World'. That epic voyage in the sloop, 'Spray' was not, however, Slocum's first great sailing adventure or the first of them which he recounted in a book. Following the loss of his ship off the coast of South America, Slocum salvaged enough material from the wreckage to build another craft which he and his family sailed through the Caribbean to return to the United States. This brave little 35ft boat was launched on May 13th, 1888 and named 'The Liberdade' to celebrate, on that same day, the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Slocum has rarely been surpassed as a narrator of nautical adventures and the 'Voyage of the Liberdade' is a riveting and essential companion work to 'Sailing Alone around the World'.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
Stark Tables
Celestial navigation is a way to find your latitude and longitude on earth using a sextant to measure the angular heights of celestial bodies above the horizon. It has been used by mariners at sea and explorers on land for three hundred years, and it is still used today as a dependable backup to modern electronic navigation. Routine celestial navigation relies upon accurate time (Universal Time) to find the longitude of a position (latitude does not require time). Advanced celestial navigators can find longitude without knowing the time using a technique called Lunar Distance. In this technique, the sextant is used to measure the angular (diagonal) distance between the moon and another celestial body. Since this distance slowly changes as the moon moves eastward though the stars, it can be used to find the time of day that is needed to complete the longitude determination. The process of finding longitude from lunar distance, however, requires special tables that have not been published in the Nautical Almanac or other sources since the early 1900s. Although software solutions have been available, most advanced celestial navigators are very grateful to navigation historian Bruce Stark for creating these printed tables dedicated to this task. They have been used and tested by mariners for more than 15 years and are praised by experts for their ingenuity and ease of use in solving this complex navigation exercise-which all agree is the hallmark of an expert celestial navigator. With The Stark Tables in your nav station, you no longer have to fear losing power to your electronic navigation aids, nor are you dependent on accurate time from any official broadcast. Besides their practical use in back up navigation, historians have used these tables for years to interpret the logbooks of Lewis and Clark, David Thompson, James Cook, Matthew Flinders, George Vancouver, Nathaniel Bowditch, and other notable explorers and sea captains. "It is remarkable in this day when the very survival of celestial navigation seems in question, that an individual should suddenly appear on the scene and present to the world such a brilliant piece of work. When he tries to imbibe those qualities in his students, he ends up creating a world record by taking the largest contingent of students to the Everest Base Camp. In this triumphant memoir, he recounts his meeting with Jaahnavi planning the trek, convincing the students' parents and the training, followed by the actual trek to the EBC. In addition to Chandra's unbridled enthusiasm, "One More Step" evokes the serene, treacherous and imposing landscape of Nepal and the Sagarmatha. It also gives us a sneak peek into how the students metamorphize into leaders, when the situation arises. What happened after the trek? How did the lives of students transform? The book has it all.
