Solo
Solo invites the reader to embark on a journey into the solitary self, exploring one's evolving relationship with the surrounding environment. This stirring and thoughtful work articulates the rewards of self-reflection, and of silence, deep listening, and meditation.---Solo: Venturing Alone in the Northern Wilds takes us to a place that nearly all of us are afraid to venture-a place where there are no lifelines or emergency exits. Finding himself face to face with challenging waters, grizzlies and extreme weather, Dick Anderson nonetheless discovers an unexpected inner peace and strength that allows him to persevere and survive. As much as it is a journey through the rugged wilds of the north, this is also a powerful journey of the soul. -Barton Rubenstein, Public Artist, Mother Earth Project cofounder and avid canoeist
Where the Trout Are All as Long as Your Leg
Brilliant, witty, perceptive essays about fly-fishing, the natural world, and life in general by the acknowledged master of fishing writers. Fly-fishing's finest scribe, John Gierach, takes us from a nameless stream on a nameless ranch in Montana to a secret pool off a secret creek where he caught a catfish as a five-year-old, to a brook full of rattlesnakes and a private pond where the trout are all as long as your leg. As Gierach says, "The secret places are the soul of fishing." Hearing about a new one never fails to entice us. And so Where the Trout Are All as Long as Your Leg transports the reader to the best of these places, where the fish are always bigger and the hatches last forever. After all, it's these magical places that Gierach so vividly evokes that remind us how precious--and precarious--are the unspoiled havens of the natural world.

New England Candlepin Bowling
Candlepin bowling is hard. So hard, in fact, that no one has ever bowled a perfect game. The pins are tall and skinny, the balls are small enough to fit in a player's hand, and the fallen pins are not cleared between rolls. Originating in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the late 19th century and played today mostly in New England and eastern Canada, the game has a rich and colorful history. In the days before automation, sure-footed pin boys manually reset the pins and returned the balls. A long-running, top-rated Boston television show regularly transformed unassuming candlepinners into regional celebrities. And the game has something called a Half Worcester. Author and photographer Susan Mara Bregman bowled at dozens of candlepin centers, combed through dusty archives, and interviewed industry insiders to create this affectionate look at one of America's quirkiest pastimes.

Tenkara
Fly fishing is complex and costly with too much cumbersome gear, right? Well, tenkara's different. Long overlooked in the West, tenkara is economical and simple, productive, and pleasurable This Eastern approach is today taking the fly-fishing world in North America and Europe by storm. Its tool kit is simple: a long, collapsible rod; a length of line tied to the end of the rod; and a fly. Without a reel, casting techniques become easy and intuitive. The gear is inexpensive and easily portable, perfect for hiking and camping. This pioneering book is an ideal guide to tenkara, covering the essentials of gear and rigging, the roots of tenkara, fishing dry flies as well as subsurface fishing and casting--as well as tenkara backpacking and tenkara for women. Tenkara has been the subject of features in Field & Stream, American Angler, and Fly, Rod & Reel magazines, and has been endorsed by the likes of Patagonia CEO and environmentalist Yvon Chouinard. Major retail outlets are now selling tenkara rods.
Navigation for the Amateur (Legacy Edition)
A Classic Handbook on Traditional Navigation Methods by Celestial Body ObservationThis unabridged reprint Legacy Edition of E. T. Morton's Navigation for the Amateur is a classic manual on how to find your way with just the sun and stars to guide you. Originally published in 1912, Morton collects the traditional methods of navigation using celestial bodies and time measurements. Over 100 years old, this antique handbook is a wonderful study on the history of navigation and exploration, far before any GPS and high-resolution navigation technologies were available!Chapters in this classic handbook include how to use the tools of navigation including sextant, chronometer, and compass, how to set sights and take readings of celestial bodies, how to find latitude and longitude based on your position and the sun, how to make use of the Sumner Line when taking readings, worked out navigation problems showing by example, and a glossary of fundamental terms for navigating on the open waters and use of cartographic principles. Also, multiple numeric tables are included, but some may be out of date based on the perpetual movements of celestial bodies - new tables would need to be acquired for some methods. This vintage book includes timeless knowledge about navigation, sailing, the history of oceanic exploration. As this information is over 100 years old, some of the mathematical formulas may not correspond to the precise placement of celestial bodies, which are in constant motion. However, the methods in this book are timeless for navigating in the traditional way. Although this book represents thought from a former time, it also reveals much about the rich history of naval and outdoors recreation, and many of the tips, tricks, and discussions are still relevant for study today!A part of The Classic Outing Handbooks Collection: Volume 19This Doublebit Legacy Edition facsimile reprint of Navigation for the Amateur is professionally restored and presented from the original source, including inspiration from the book's original cover, with the highest degree of fidelity possible. Unfortunately, many great military books, field manuals, and technical guides over the years have become less available and harder to find. These have either been rescinded by the armed forces or are otherwise out of print due to their age. This does not mean that these texts are worthless or "out of date" - in fact, the opposite is true! It is true that the US Military frequently updates its manuals as its protocols have changed based on the times and combat situations that our armed services face. However, the knowledge about the outdoors over the entire history of military publication is timeless!By publishing the Military Outdoors Skills Series, it is our goal at Doublebit Press to do what we can to preserve and share historic military works, such as army field manuals (the FM series), technical manuals (the TM series), and other military books that hold timeless knowledge about outdoors life, navigation, and survival.
