Actually, Ford was somewhat unique in that it had two very different big-block engine designs during the muscle car era.The FE engine was a design pioneered in the late 1950s, primarily as a more powerful replacement for the dated Y-block design because cars were becoming bigger and heavier, and therefore, necessitated more power to move. What started as torquey engines meant to move heavyweight sedans morphed into screaming high-performance mills that won Le Mans and drag racing championships through the 1960s. By the late 1960s, the design was dated, so Ford replaced the FE design with the "385" series, also known as the "Lima" design, which was more similar to the canted-valve Cleveland design being pioneered at the same time. It didn't share the 1960s pedigree of racing success, but the new design was better in almost every way; it exists via Ford motorsports offerings to this day.
The Hampden Railroad
The Hampden Railroad was completed in 1913. It was built to connect the railroads at Springfield to Palmer and northward to the vacation lands in New Hampshire and Maine. But it was not approved for use by the Massachusetts Railroad Commission. This book supplements my first book with maps and photos not available when that book was published.
Ridership Revisited
Controversy persists over how many people would ride the "maglev." This magnetic-levitation rail line has been proposed to connect Baltimore and Washington. If the maglev ran mostly empty, then it would not be worth constructing. To evaluate the maglev's ridership potential, the present document contains a wealth of information for concerned citizens, elected officials, and transportation planners. This information goes far beyond the six-page discussion of maglev ridership in the DEIS, the project's draft environmental impact statement. For unknown reasons, the DEIS uncritically copies its ridership information from a contractor's report that the public is not allowed to read. In contrast, both facts and controversy are laid bare in the document that you are now holding.

Utica Railroads 1950-2010
I was introduced to railroads at an early age, accompanying my grandfather on many trips to visit different railroad locations but most often in the Utica, NY area. So began a lifelong enthusiasm for railroads that has lasted nearly seven decades. During all of that time I continued to pursue my passion for railroads over much of the eastern U.S. but the majority of my time was still spent in the Utica area near my home. The purpose of this book is to simply recall and share my countless memories of pursuing trains in the greater Utica area. In an effort to provide some context and comparisons I have included what history I have learned, witnessed and even experienced concerning railroads in the area over the last nearly seven decades. I have tried to include pertinent definitions and brief explanations to enable those who have had limited exposure to railroad specific terms in an effort to make the stories more meaningful. This is not meant to be a comprehensive history of the railroads but merely a personal memoir. I have attempted to organize the information and events chronologically by decade but remembering exact dates can be problematic since so much of this was of course, decades ago. While I have made an attempt to fact check dates where possible some of the dating may still be a bit off. My extensive use of dating is not an attempt to nail down historically exact dates but merely a way of attempting to keep the chronology straight. The facts and incidents are as I remember them but often the exact dates can be a bit fuzzy and I am presenting the information for entertainment purposes based upon my understanding and personal memories. Building the Lake Branch
The history of what became known as the B. & O. Lake Branch began as early as 1835 and spanned approximately 185 years. Over that timeline (1835 - 2021), a dozen different railroad company names blanketed the road between Painesville and Youngstown, Ohio. Each company expanded and changed the route between Lake, Geauga, and Trumbull Counties. The story of this branch has more turns and twists than the Grand River it was associated with. Furthermore, the author provides a perspective into the lives of those who lived and worked on the road as well as the events that took place. What began as a pedestrian and freight mover became an essential vehicle to move coal, oil, and iron ore from Fairport Harbor to Youngstown and beyond. Much of its early history has been forgotten until now. The book chronicles all of the railroads that covered the region, beginning with the Clinton Air Line Railroad that built the first right-of-way in 1852. The Painesville & Hudson, Painesville & Youngstown, Pittsburgh & Western, Baltimore & Ohio among others created an empire of transportation that fed the hungry fire-breathing furnace mills of Youngstown and Pittsburgh. In all, some 46 railroads were associated with the branch. The villages of Painesville, Fairport Harbor, Concord, Chardon, East Claridon, Burton, Middlefield, West Farmington, DeForest Jct. and Niles have their own histories written in independent chapters. Each town includes current photographs to show the remnants of what still exists. Some areas in the back country remain inaccessible to the public. The author has provided a plethora of current photographs in these areas including a comprehensive detailed analysis of each town. In addition, more than 300 color and black & white photographs along with blueprints, maps, 'then and now' photos are illustrated. The photo anthology contains exclusive photographs never before published. Newly discovered information about the DeForest Junction and Niles area is presented, including the 2021 razing of the railyard. In addition, an abundance of railroad materials unearthed during the 2018 excavation in Chardon of the Maple Highland Trail has been photographed. From the shores of Lake Erie to the Mahoning Valley and beyond, this book chronicles every step and 'Stop' along the branch. The journey from Painesville to Youngstown was approximately 64.4 miles. However, the story of the Lake Branch should be measured not in miles, but memories, as they have no limitations.
