Can Trucks Sustain the Objective Force Army?
This monograph examines the Army's future operational level logistic support in an effort to determine whether or not the Army can successfully execute its Objective Force transformation without an aerial-based sustainment and distribution system. The Objective Force is the Army's futuristic medium-weight, motorized force that will have an operational reach of 1,000 kilometers in any direction. Sustaining this force will require maneuver sustainment organizations with equal or greater combat service support (CSS) reach. Although the Objective Force exists only as a concept, its design will be guided by seven design characteristics: responsiveness, deployability, agility, versatility, lethality, survivability and sustainability. The author evaluates how well a sustainment concept might support the Objective Force with an assessment of these characteristics. The future relevance of the Army was the impetus for change and transformation efforts. The Army is becoming more strategically responsive by reducing its size and support requirements while increasing its effectiveness. The Objective Force operational environment will not allow entry into the theater through ports of debarkation and will have extended and unsecured lines of communication. The Objective Force will conduct operational maneuver from strategic distances and arrive in the area of operations ready to fight. Operations will commence without in-theater sustainment bases. During continuous operations, Objective Force units will be able to self-sustain for three to seven days without external replenishment. This will create new challenges for the Army's sustainment community. Objective Force maneuver sustainers must provide rapid and assured support throughout the theater, without relying on logistics mass. The sustainment system will be based on a high velocity distribution pipeline. Kansas City Southern Railway
Rail yards serve as major nodes that facilitate delivery of cargo to the consignee. The level of operational efficiency maintained within rail yards determines whether customers receive cargo late. Various external and internal factors can impede the operational efficiency of rail yards. The future growth of rail industry depends on how well it manages a potentially serious problem inherent to all railroads--rail congestion. This study reviews the processes that occur within the Knoche rail yard, which is located in Kansas City, Kansas, and also examines several strategies to improve the operational efficiency of the yard's rip track facility. This study reveals that the operational efficiency of the Knoche rail yard may be enhanced if the following occur: (1) increase the rip track facility queue population from fifteen to twenty-two, and (2) spot bad order cars directly onto the two tracks leading into the rip track facility. Future Tactical Truck System Maximization
This study explores the Future Tactical Truck System (FTTS) as it applies to the sustainment distribution system on the future battlefield. Objective Force logistics on the battlefield is required by the Objective Force Concept White Paper to be sustainable, trainable, versatile, responsive, survivable and agile. The FTTS is scheduled to be the primary transport vehicle that would enable the OF sustainment distribution system. The FTTS, with movement tracking system (MTS) and embedded radio frequency (RF-Tag) technology will improve motor transport operations and sustainment. The primary application of these technologies alone, in and of themselves will not be enough to meet Objective Force requirements. Changes to doctrine, organization, training, leader development, materials, personnel and facilities (DOTLM-PF) have to be explored to maximize the effectiveness of the FTTS enabled sustainment distribution system in the Objective Force. To investigate and gauge the appropriate changes, analysis is needed to test viable concepts. This study explores four proven logistical concepts from top American corporations; Schneider Trucking Corporation's concepts for fleet management and maintenance management, Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad's concept for railcar management and Wal-Mart's concept for distribution management. These concepts are applied to a FTTS sustainment distribution model and analyzed through the prism of DOTLM-PF to gain insights on possible changes that meet the Objective Force requirements and maximize effectiveness of the system. Kansas City Southern Railway
Rail yards serve as major nodes that facilitate delivery of cargo to the consignee. The level of operational efficiency maintained within rail yards determines whether customers receive cargo late. Various external and internal factors can impede the operational efficiency of rail yards. The future growth of rail industry depends on how well it manages a potentially serious problem inherent to all railroads--rail congestion. This study reviews the processes that occur within the Knoche rail yard, which is located in Kansas City, Kansas, and also examines several strategies to improve the operational efficiency of the yard's rip track facility. This study reveals that the operational efficiency of the Knoche rail yard may be enhanced if the following occur: (1) increase the rip track facility queue population from fifteen to twenty-two, and (2) spot bad order cars directly onto the two tracks leading into the rip track facility. Following the sad death of Stuart Baker, the creator of Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland, in 2020, we were fortunate that another fine railway cartographer, Joe Brown, agreed to complete the work that Stuart had begun, to revise what became the 15th edition. However, the railway network of Great Britain and Ireland is always changing and never static and revised editions of this atlas are required on a regular basis; the rebuilding of the line from Oxford towards Cambridge and the reinstatement of the Foynes branch in Ireland being examples of some of the additions to this new edition.Fortunately, Joe Brown has agreed to take on this work and this 16th edition will be the first one to be fully edited and revised by him. As with all the previous editions, the Atlas has been fully revised and updated whilst retaining the convenient format of mapping where each page overlaps with that on adjoining pages to make it easier to follow a long-distance route.
