Water demand is increasing at a higher rate than the population growth (Oki and Kanae, 2006) and there is a critical need to reappraise perspectives on urban water and wastewater management. Globally, around 20 million hectares of agricultural area is under wastewater irrigation (Hamilton et al., 2007). In the developing world, especially in South Asia wastewater irrigation is a common livelihood practice. Farmers around the urban agglomerations continuously depend on the wastewater released from nearby urban centres (Qadir et al., 2010), which is untreated or partially treated or diluted wastewater and also sometimes it is a mixture of industrial wastewater (Amerasinghe et al., 2009). The scant data on wastewater generation, treatment and reuse in the developing world makes it difficult to understand the fluxes and processes in peri-urban systems (Minhas and Samra, 2004). There is a need to take advantage of emerging scientific methods for evaluating the wastewater reuse options for sustainable crop production and groundwater management (Minhas and Samra, 2004; Qadir et al., 2010).

From the eighteenth century until as recently as World War II, the natural scientist was depicted as a kind of moral superhero: objective, modest, ascetic, and selflessly dedicated to the betterment of humanity. What accounts for the widespread diffusion of this myth? In Science and Immortality, Charles B. Paul provides a partial explanation. The modern ideology of the scientist as disinterested seeker after truth arose partly through the transformation of an ancient literary form--the commemoration of heroes. In 1699 Bernard de Fontenelle, as Secretary of the Paris Academy of Sciences, inaugurated the tradition of the 矇loge, or eulogy, in honor of members of the Academy. The moral qualities that had once been attributed to the idealized Stoic philosopher were transferred in the eulogies to the "natural philosopher," or scientist. The over two hundred 矇loges composed between 1699 and 1791 by Fontenelle and his successors--Mairan, Fouchy, and Condorcet--served as a powerful device for the popularization of science. It was the intention of the secretaries, though, not only to exhibit the natural scientist as a modern-day hero but also to present a truthful record of scientific activity in France. Paul examines the 矇loges both as a literary form that used rhetorical and stylistic devises to reconcile these two conflicting goals and as a collective biography of a new breed of savants--one that already contained the seed of the conflict between self-image and reality embedded in the modern scientific enterprise. A unique history of science in eighteenth-century France, Science and Immortality illuminates the record in the 矇loges of the professionalization of some sciences and the maturation of others, the recognition of their utility to society and the state, and the widening trust in science as the remedy to economic restriction and political absolutism. Although the WHO has not proposed a health standard for sulphate, most countries recommend a drinking water standard between 250 and 500 mg/L for sulphate which is often based on odour and threshold, as higher sulphate concentration may result in an undesirable taste in water (Gorchev and Ozolins, 2011). Infants are more sensitive to high sulphate concentrations than healthy adults (Gorchev and Ozolins, 2011). Sulphate is extremely corrosive and can cause burns and irritation to the skin, irritation to eyes resulting in blindness and pulmonary edema (excess fluid in the lungs). Ingestion through drinking may cause burns to the throat, mouth, oesophagus and stomach (CSIR, 2013). High concentrations of sulphates in drinking water can decreased forage digestion in cattle and their ruminal metabolic activity which negatively affect their health (Coria et al., 2007). In soil and sediments, high sulphate concentration can cause release of phosphates bound to sediments which could potentially lead to eutrophication (Geurts et al., 2009).

Study of Cyanobacteria - Bacteria Interaction for Treatment of Waste Water

The need for sustainable wastewater treatment is a major challenge today due to the depletion of water supplies and increased environmental contaminations. Existing traditional treatment methods use a lot of energy and can fall short of strict disposal requirements. Algal-bacterial systems have recently come into prominence as environmentally acceptable, long-lasting procedures for wastewater treatment and resource recovery. The symbiotic interaction between algae and bacteria is the basis for algal-bacterial systems to function sustainable. In this work attempts has been made study the effect of monoculture and hybrid culture of cyanobacteria and bacteria for the treatment of waste water from various sources and their treatment efficiency was analyzed. In our experiment four waste water samples were collected from Vanivihar drain (20.30'N and 85.84' E), H.D.M Food industry, Mancheswar (20.31'N and 85.85' E), Fish farming Pond, Utkal University (20.30'N and 85.84'E), Falcon marine export ltd., Mancheswar (20.30'N and 85.85'E) named as W1 UUD, W2 HDM, W3 FUU, W4 FME. The cyanobacteria and bacteria used for this study are Lyngbya heironymussi and Lysinibacillus macrolides collected from the laboratory cultures. The cyanobacteria and bacteria were cultured in waste water samples under axenic and co-cultured conditions. The physico-chemical parameters of the water were estimated at 6 days of inoculation and a highly significant decrease (80-97%) in Nitrate, Phosphate, Ammonia, Chloride, total hardness, DO, BOD, COD were found in waste water samples after treatment than the pre-treated concentrations. There was a 2-fold higher biomass was recorded in cyanobacteria under co-cultured condition than axenic one in W4 FME. This revelation challenges the widely held belief that reproductive autonomy is the panacea for authoritarian eugenics. As reproductive and genetic technology rapidly change popular conceptions about what a person is, can be, and should be, it is more vital than ever to locate these perspectives and decisions in their historical context.

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a numerical technique based on Newton's law of mechanics, initially designed to study the flow of granular materials (Cundall and Strack, 1979). The interaction between these materials and predefined environment are simulated using contact models which calculates the forces and associated energy loss (Cundall and Strack, 1979). As DEM has been refined, it has demonstrated the capability to study dynamic scenarios such as; earthquake, rock fracture and comminution (Mora et al., 1993; Potyondy et al., 1996; Morrison et al., 2007). These scenarios necessitated constructing numerical rock specimens of desired shape and size and the implementation of breakage models within DEM. A number of breakage models with variation in mathematical formulations and their mode of implementation have been utilised in comminution studies. The most prominent are the Discrete Grain Breakage (DGB) method (Potapov and Campbell, 1994), Particle Replacement Method (PRM) (Cleary, 2001) and the Bonded Particle Model (BPM) (Potyondy and Cundall, 2004). The DGB and PRM models are semi-empirical; replacing individual discrete rocks with a population of smaller rocks in accordance with a prescribed appearance function. In BPM, a rock specimen is represented by connecting/contacting discrete entities. The BPM aims to simulate rock breakage with fragmented sizes and shapes determined dynamically i.e., shapes and size distributions of fragments arise naturally.

Global warming and climate change are becoming among the top main concerns of many nations. It is undeniable that the exaggerated usage of fossil fuels and the corresponding carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, is the main cause for global environmental impacts [1]. Global average temperature has increased by more than one-degree Celsius since pre-industrial times [2]. Figure 1 shows the global average temperature relative to the average of the period between 1961 and 1990. The red line represents the average annual temperature trend through time, and two light grey lines are representative of upper and lower confidence intervals. Also, can be seen that over the last few decades, global temperatures have risen sharply to approximately 0.7℃ higher than our 1961-1990 baseline. When extended back to 1850, that temperatures then were a further 0.4℃ colder than they were in our baseline. Overall, this would amount to an average temperature rise of 1.1℃ [2].
