Economo and Horn - Gyral Form, Dimensions and Cytoarchitectonics of the Supratemporal Surface
This is a translation of Constantin von Economo and Ludwig Horn: ?ber Windungsrelief, Masse und Rindenarchitektonik der Supratemporalfl瓣che, ihre individuellen und ihre Seitenunterschiede. Z. ges. Neurol. Psychiat. 130:678-757 (1930). Although first published almost a century ago (1930), the original article still contains the most detailed study to date of the gyral topography and the cytoarchitectonics of the human supratemporal surface, i.e. the auditory and speech perception areas, with special emphasis on individual variations and on hemispheric asymmetries. The careful reader might also infer correlations between the "completely granulated" subareas and the regions of the primary auditory cortex for human speech frequencies, as well as correlations between the degree of granulation and the density of myelinated fibers. These can give even the modern (2023) reader insights into cortical development and functional capacities.

Victorian Interdisciplinarity and the Sciences
The specialization thesis--the idea that nineteenth-century science fragmented into separate forms of knowledge that led to the creation of modern disciplines--has played an integral role in the way historians have described the changing disciplinary map of nineteenth-century British science. This volume critically reevaluates this dominant narrative in the historiography. While new disciplines did emerge during the nineteenth century, the intellectual landscape was far muddier, and in many cases new forms of specialist knowledge continued to cross boundaries while integrating ideas from other areas of study. Through a history of Victorian interdisciplinarity, this volume offers a more complicated and innovative analysis of discipline formation. Harnessing the techniques of cultural and intellectual history, studies of visual culture, Victorian studies, and literary studies, contributors break out of subject-based silos, exposing the tension between the rhetorical push for specialization and the actual practice of knowledge sharing across disciplines during the nineteenth century.

Reduce Diving to a Science
The early modern period was a particularly exciting and pioneering era for the development of diving technology. The beginnings of commercial diving, scientific diving and recreational diving can be found here. In the 17th century, basic research was carried out using the new experimental method, which demystified diving. Diving developed from a secret art to the practical application of scientific laws, today's diving technology or diving science. This work uses the diving bell as an example to show the dominant line of development in diving technology in this era. It represents a basic innovation on which all further designs are based. The development of the diving bell opened up extensive new technical territory and triggered a broad stream of subsequent innovations with far-reaching economic and social consequences. For example, the development of the closed helmet diving suit in the 19th century was a consequence of the knowledge gained from the diving bell. The period of this study is based on two key dates in the development of diving apparatus: After antiquity the first mention of a diving bell is from a manuscript from 1420 - as far as we know - and the year 1815 marks the beginning of series production and export of diving bells. This work therefore examines a complete innovation process that begins with a theoretical idea and ends with an international transfer into practice. In addition to contemporary literature, inventor's privileges on diving equipment are examined for the first time, which represent a partially unprocessed archive source on the history of diving. They will be indexed and evaluated in a large number of European archives in terms of content and in a broader overall view spanning three centuries. The question of which socio-cultural factors have an influence on innovations will also be examined.

Murray-Darling Mysteries
The Murray River in south-eastern Australia, one of the world's oldest and slowest rivers, meanders more than 2000 km across a dry ancient landscape from the mountains to the sea, following a course evolved over millions of years. The Darling River winds over an even longer distance from the mountains on the east coast of Queensland to join the Murray River at Wentworth in the semi-arid western lowland plains. These river systems are full of mysteries, in the way that their unique flora and fauna have developed clever strategies to survive in widely varying conditions which swing between droughts and floods. This book seeks to explain these mysteries in a natural history of the Murray-Darling Rivers, aiming to fulfill an ambition of Anne's colleague and PhD supervisor, the late Associate Professor Keith Walker of the University of Adelaide. Keith wanted to share his knowledge and love of the river ecosystems with a wide audience, to describe the Murray River as it was naturally, while generating wider understanding of actions needed to make sure the rivers and their ecosystems survive into the future. In this book, Anne Jensen shares stories she learnt from Keith Walker and many other colleagues about Murray-Darling rivers and wetland ecosystems, illustrated with a selection of quality photographs from her extensive collection. Her aim is to generate understanding of the need for sufficient water to be returned to river ecosystems so the rivers can continue to support the human communities of the Basin, as well as the plants and animals.
Hylomorphism Into Pieces
Focussing on late medieval and early modern philosophy and medicine, this edited collection explores the replacement of hylomorphism--the dominant theory of bodies in the Middle Ages--with new theories of matter such as corpuscularianism and atomism at the dawn of the Modern period. Together, the contributions offer a comprehensive overview of a crucial historical moment for the history of philosophy and science: the rise of a new conception of matter against declining scholastic theories. They highlight the key aspects of this historical transition by investigating precise concepts that were central to this shift, namely the notions of elements, atoms, and corpuscles. Shedding light on the gradual process by which hylomorphism was eventually replaced by a more positive conception of matter and natural processes, the book demonstrates how many thinkers of the late medieval period were willing to integrate new theories into the conceptual framework of Aristotelian natural philosophy, and tried to harmonise them with the traditional concepts and axioms of scholastic doctrines. Showing how these conceptual innovations resulted from a complex interaction between different fields of late medieval and early modern knowledge, the authors bring together research from the disciplines of metaphysics, medieval philosophy, and medical science. Providing an overview of an important theoretical shift in the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era, this book is essential reading for scholars of philosophy, and historians of medieval and early modern science and medicine.

When Albert became Einstein
This book proposes an in-depth investigation carried out in Italy in young Albert Einstein's footsteps, since his attempt to enter the ETH Zurich in 1895 until his first doctoral work in 1901. We follow his family, who transferred his electrical engineering company from Munich to Milan, in the rich social, economic, political and industrial context of post-unified Italy; a milieu also familiar to Michele Besso, Albert's closest friend and collaborator, whom he met again daily in Milan on semester-breaks, after their first meeting in 1895. In Pavia, the parish register will lead us to Carlo Marangoni, the uncle of Ernestina (Albert's friend) and a specialist in capillarity phenomena. In Milan, we will discover the library of the Lombardo Institute, Academy of sciences and letters, where Albert worked for his bibliography. Old registers at the university and at the Polytechnic will draw our attention to his connection with Giuseppe Jung, one of Michele's uncles, an academician. This young Albert environment sheds a new light on his scientific remarks to his fianc矇e Mileva Maric his first article on capillarity and molecular forces; his interest in wireless telegraphy; his search to evidence the motion of the Earth through the ether; his thesis extended to weakly compressed gases and even his early questionings on the nature of light. All of this we will discover in a trip round Lombardy in the beginning of the 19th century.

Rock, Bone, and Ruin
An argument that we should be optimistic about the capacity of "methodologically omnivorous" geologists, paleontologists, and archaeologists to uncover truths about the deep past. The "historical sciences"--geology, paleontology, and archaeology--have made extraordinary progress in advancing our understanding of the deep past. How has this been possible, given that the evidence they have to work with offers mere traces of the past? In Rock, Bone, and Ruin, Adrian Currie explains that these scientists are "methodological omnivores," with a variety of strategies and techniques at their disposal, and that this gives us every reason to be optimistic about their capacity to uncover truths about prehistory. Creative and opportunistic paleontologists, for example, discovered and described a new species of prehistoric duck-billed platypus from a single fossilized tooth. Examining the complex reasoning processes of historical science, Currie also considers philosophical and scientific reflection on the relationship between past and present, the nature of evidence, contingency, and scientific progress.Currie draws on varied examples from across the historical sciences, from Mayan ritual sacrifice to giant Mesozoic fleas to Mars's mysterious watery past, to develop an account of the nature of, and resources available to, historical science. He presents two major case studies: the emerging explanation of sauropod size, and the "snowball earth" hypothesis that accounts for signs of glaciation in Neoproterozoic tropics. He develops the Ripple Model of Evidence to analyze "unlucky circumstances" in scientific investigation; examines and refutes arguments for pessimism about the capacity of the historical sciences, defending the role of analogy and arguing that simulations have an experiment-like function.
