What was Lake Merritt like in the 1990's? Is history repeating itself?Between September 3, 1991 and December 19, 1997, the Montclarion newspaper (now part of the Bay Area News Group) published a series of 77 essays written bimonthly by Dr. Richard Bailey, founder of the Lake Merritt Institute. These stories, editorials, fantasies, and news briefs, were mostly written in an Irish pub, and provided support for establishment of the Lake Merritt Institute in 1992, Measure DD (The Oakland Trust for Clean Water and Safe Parks) in 2002, and many of the improvements that citizens and wildlife now enjoy around the lake.Early essays dealt with singular topics such as fountains, birds, and algae. Later essays delved into philosophical issues such as religion, the devil, and ethics. Some concerned economics, history, and the future. These essays have been reprinted here in the hope that they will continue to inspire governments, nonprofits, and citizens to increase efforts to create sustainable, permanent improvements to both infrastructure and maintenance of a unique, urban estuary. Hopefully you will be inspired by what has been done, and will act. The opportunities, some are described in the epilogue and in essay 78, are many.

In this attempt to bring together in a single volume all that is known about the Swedish naturalist Peter Artedi, a chronicle of his life is provided, beginning with his early upbringing in the Parish of Anundsj繹, ?ngermanland, his school days at H瓣rn繹sand, his ten years at Uppsala University, his time in England, his life and work in Holland, and ending with his untimely death by drowning in an Amsterdam canal at age 30. Benefiting enormously from an early friendship with the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, famous for establishing binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms, the two early on made elaborate plans to classify plants and animals in ways that would later be described as revolutionary. Artedi, being more interested in zoology, took on the fishes, amphibians, and reptiles-as well as the plant family Umbelliferae (Apiaceae), while Linnaeus, who was already by this time working on his sexual system for plants, took all the remaining vegetable kingdom, the insects and birds. Both agreed to work independently on minerals and mammals. Although passing before he had a chance to publish on his part of the plan, Artedi left behind a wealth of material in manuscript, mainly on the biology of fishes but also on quadrupeds, that is here translated into English from the original Latin and analyzed in light of present-day knowledge. In addition to adding details to what is already known, thanks to a number of eminent scholars, about the life of Peter Artedi, an important secondary goal of this work is to formulate a new perspective on the usefulness in practice of Artedi's zoological methods, which no naturalist had heretofore put to paper. Readers will be surprised at the depth and breadth of his contributions, especially his work on fishes, which has earned him the well-deserved title of "Father of Ichthyology."

However, it also has negative impacts on the natural environment. In particular, the use of fertilizers can lead to soil and water pollution and affect biodiversity. On one hand, nature needs to be protected, which requires reducing negative environmental impacts and safeguarding important ecosystems. On the other hand, sustainable and economic agriculture requires the use of certain practices that bring negative environmental impacts. Therefore, there is a conflict between agriculture and conservation, which requires finding an appropriate balance. This paper focuses on this conflict and possible solutions to it. Specifically, it examines the effects of fertilizers on biodiversity, water quality, and soil quality. Various fertilizers used in agriculture are presented, and a comparison is made between chemical and organic fertilizers. Every time better spectrographs are built or new wavelength domains explored, we find critical information missing that is needed for analyses to derive abundances or to compare models of stars and planets to observations, in order to more fully understand the universe that we observe. IAU Symposium 371 encompassed nearly all the science themes that the IAU covers, from near to far in the universe, and at all wavelengths. But it concerned more than lab work in and of itself and brought together laboratory astrophysicists with the people who use that information, to learn about current advances and limitations, and future needs. A broad spectrum of the IAU's membership can benefit from these proceedings.
