Geographic Information Systems and Cartography for a Sustainable World

Mdpi AG 出版
2025/08/15 出版

Sustainable development is an interdisciplinary challenge that involves the environment, society, and the economy. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), outlined in the 2030 Agenda, serve as a call for action for all countries. Fulfilling the SDGs grows more pressing, while the consequences of no action are becoming evident to citizens. Scientists and spatial data stakeholders worldwide utilize Geographic Information Systems and Cartography to analyze, assess, visualize, and communicate spatial and developmental inefficiencies in support of planning efforts and policy pathways that aim to achieve sustainability objectives. GIS are the ultimate tools for modeling, designing, and analyzing data relevant to sustainability processes at scales ranging from the local to global. This Reprint compiles research and technological advancements as to sustainability concerns that are implemented in several case studies worldwide. The contributions address some of the UN SDGs and cover topics that are closely related to sustainability, (e.g. urbanization, transportation, carbon emissions management, infrastructure, rural development, climate change). Although some progress has already been made, more intensive and collaborative efforts from scientists, governments, the entrepreneurial community, and citizens are needed to reach the ambitious goals of the 2030 Agenda.

Routledge Handbook of Climate Change Impacts on Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities

Routledge 出版
2025/08/15 出版

This Handbook examines the diverse ways in which climate change impacts Indigenous Peoples and local communities and considers their response to these changes. While there is well-established evidence that the climate of the Earth is changing, the scarcity of instrumental data oftentimes challenges scientists' ability to detect such impacts in remote and marginalized areas of the world or in areas with scarce data. Bridging this gap, this Handbook draws on field research among Indigenous Peoples and local communities distributed across different climatic zones and relying on different livelihood activities, to analyse their reports of and responses to climate change impacts. It includes contributions from a range of authors from different nationalities, disciplinary backgrounds, and positionalities, thus reflecting the diversity of approaches in the field. The Handbook is organised in two parts: Part I examines the diverse ways in which climate change - alone or in interaction with other drivers of environmental change - affects Indigenous Peoples and local communities; Part II examines how Indigenous Peoples and local communities are locally adapting their responses to these impacts. Overall, this book highlights Indigenous and local knowledge systems as an untapped resource which will be vital in deepening our understanding of the effects of climate change. The Routledge Handbook of Climate Change Impacts on Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities will be an essential reference text for students and scholars of climate change, anthropology, environmental studies, ethnobiology, and Indigenous studies. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Common Ground

2025/08/14 出版

In Common Ground, veteran organizer Eileen Flanagan weaves together a series of stories of hard won successes in the climate change movement, including against a multinational bank in one case, and a heavily polluting fossil fuel company in another, based on grassroots organizing. As heat waves, wildfires, storms, and floods become ever more deadly, the book describes a groundswell of action in which citizens of all ages, races and political stripes struggle to understand each other and the enormous challenges we face fighting companies and governments wilfully blind to the climate change dangers we face as a society. A Quaker activist, facilitator, and teacher, Flanagan takes us on a personal journey through her environmental direct-action experiences as well as her relationships with community leaders to understand how we can form coalitions to actually make a difference. Flanagan shows that "the illusion of separation"--the fallacy that humans can thrive in a dying world--is at the root of interlocking environmental crises and that it's often politicians and corporations who benefit by keeping the rest of us divided across lines of race, class, religion, and generation. In Common Ground, Flanagan argues that more than technology or even elections, acting in solidarity with all life is humanity's best hope for survival. Includes a foreword by internationally acclaimed South African activist Kumi Naidoo, President of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and former head of Greenpeace International and Amnesty International.

Laudate Deum

Laudato Si 出版
2025/08/13 出版

Pope Francis' encyclical letter Laudato Si' called for radical action to address climate change and its underlying causes. Since the letter's publication, however, greenhouse gas emissions have continued to rise and sufficiently profound changes to how we live, work and feed the global population have failed to materialise, leading Pope Francis to issue the follow-up exhortation Laudate Deum in 2023. Laudate Deum: A Last Call for the Planet builds upon and is inspired by this seminal work. Ten years on from Laudato Si', it brings together voices from across the world to explore the profound issues highlighted by the late Pope, from the 'technocratic paradigm' that has broken humanity's relationship with the natural world, to the poverty and injustice that the climate crisis itself perpetuates. Above all, this publication illustrates that the time for action is already overtaking us. Laudate Deum really does represent a 'Last Call for the Planet': a last chance to live up to our collective responsibility as human beings to care for God's creation, before it is too late for life as we know it to survive.

Proceedings of the 5th Global Summit of the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (Gadri)

Springer 出版
2025/08/13 出版

This book presents selected papers from the 5th Global Summit of the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI)-Engaging Sciences with Action, which was held virtually and regionally from 31 August to 1 September 2021. The Summit reappraised progress and achievements in disaster risk reduction research by the members towards the targets of the science and technology roadmap to implement the goals and priorities of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. The programme communicated academic science across various scientific disciplines to policymakers and practitioners. This cross-disciplinary aspect is important for academics to be aware of how science can directly contribute to mitigate national and local disasters, for example, the global pandemic COVID-19, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The Global Summit of GADRI was attentive to the necessary influence of the Global Alliance and its supporting regional alliances to reflect disaster research into the outcome of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) that took place in Glasgow, UK, in November 2021. The summit contributed to COP26 and provided an impetus to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and health challenges for climate policy to work in the framework of disaster resilience and response. Facilitated through the UK Alliance for Disaster Research, the recommendations by the 5th Global Summit of GADRI were presented at COP26 as well as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)'s Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction titled "From Risk to Resilience: Towards Sustainable Development for All in a COVID-19 Transformed World", which was held in Bali, Indonesia, from 23 to 28 May 2022.
