Tree Day
An hourly guide that spotlights twenty-four trees as they root, flower, and host diverse forest life. In this short book, treetop explorer Meg Lowman guides us through a global forest. Each chapter of Tree Day introduces a single tree during a single hour, highlighting twenty-four species from around the world. In the dark of Yemen's night, it is too early to see the red sap from which the dragon's blood tree gets its name. But if we watch closely, we will see nocturnal geckos carry the trees' pollen in their snouts. Later, in the Pacific Northwest, we climb the world's tallest species, the coastal redwood. The morning fog is a reminder that redwoods absorb water through their roots and canopies, helping them survive such heights. The sun is already low in the sky on an autumn afternoon. By the end of our tree day, we will understand that trees are the silent caretakers of our planet, providing us with medicines, foods, machinery for making fresh water and oxygen, and more. For each hour, celebrated artist Thibaud H矇rem has depicted these trees with gorgeous pen and ink illustrations. Urban Regeneration
Many aspects come into play when addressing urban regeneration issues, and various interventions are needed to ensure cities are resilient and prepared to respond to environmental, economic, and social challenges. Resilience is understood as a "cross-cutting condition" in the reorganisation of a city, as the ability to provide adaptive and timely responses to numerous challenges and adverse events. Land consumption, characterised by the expansion of artificial cover for residential, manufacturing, and infrastructure purposes, is a worrying trend globally. There is a need to monitor and formulate strategies to mitigate land consumption and safeguard ecosystem services. Only through joint actions will cities be prepared to address key land vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change: drought and water scarcity, heat waves in urban areas, unconventional events, and hydrogeological risk. This Special Issue aims to identify contextual actions that can reduce land consumption, promote de-impermeabilization, and encourage re-naturalisation, focusing on enhancing ecosystem services in land use activities. Therefore, it focuses on understanding the contributions of ecosystem services, landscape restoration and green infrastructure for climate mitigation, and land use reduction in urban regeneration processes.

Groundwater, a hidden reservoir beneath the Earth's surface, is a vital lifeline for billions around the world, supporting drinking water supplies and industrial and agricultural production. As a core component of the hydrological cycle, it interacts dynamically with ecosystems, soil, and surface water. The increasing demand for freshwater as a result of population growth and climate change has intensified the need to address groundwater vulnerability. Sources of pollution such as agricultural runoff, industrial wastewater, untreated wastewater, and chemical infiltration threaten water quality by introducing heavy metals, nutrients, and pathogens, endangering human health and ecological balance. During the latter part of the program, after the entrance of the U.S. into the war, greater emphasis was paid to the present and potential economic resources of the Coastal Plain. Climate Shocks and Pastoralist Migration in South Sudan
In this important, multidisciplinary, open access study, Daniel Akech Thiong shows that the relations between climate disaster, pastoralist migration, and intercommunal conflict in Africa reach farther, both in time and space, than we realize. Focusing on the climate-shock-induced migrations of the Dinka people of South Sudan's Jonglei state into the Equatoria region, Thiong investigates the long-term ecological roots of conflicts among pastoralists, or between pastoralists and agriculturalists, over access shrinking waterholes and grazing zones. In so doing, he not only offers important correctives to prevalent, short-term narratives around individual political conflicts-narratives that provide little fodder for any long-term solutions--but also sheds new light on the role of governance, both national and local, in creating or mitigating the conflicts. Thiong in fact reveals examples of unusual cooperation between diverse ethnic groups amidst climate-change-induced disasters, and these findings shed new light on similar developments elsewhere in Africa, all of which offers new lessons for those who wish to mitigate future clashes related to climate-shock-induced displacement and encourage social stability.
