Tree Day

Meg,Lowman  著
University 出版
2025/08/09 出版

An hourly guide that spotlights twenty-four trees as they root, flower, and host diverse forest life. In this short book, treetop explorer Meg Lowman guides us through a global forest. Each chapter of Tree Day introduces a single tree during a single hour, highlighting twenty-four species from around the world. In the dark of Yemen's night, it is too early to see the red sap from which the dragon's blood tree gets its name. But if we watch closely, we will see nocturnal geckos carry the trees' pollen in their snouts. Later, in the Pacific Northwest, we climb the world's tallest species, the coastal redwood. The morning fog is a reminder that redwoods absorb water through their roots and canopies, helping them survive such heights. The sun is already low in the sky on an autumn afternoon. Given the darkness of this New England forest, the sugar maple's leaves have stopped producing chlorophyll that converts light into energy--and green gives way to vivid crimson foliage. After many hours of boiling, the maple sap makes delicious maple syrup. As the sun sets in Mexico, we observe the origin of another treat, chocolate. The cocoa tree's flowers sprout along its trunk and branches, allowing easy access for tiny insects like midges that pollinate the tree and start the process of making delicious food for humans, monkeys, bats, and squirrels. By the end of our tree day, we will understand that trees are the silent caretakers of our planet, providing us with medicines, foods, machinery for making fresh water and oxygen, and more. For each hour, celebrated artist Thibaud H矇rem has depicted these trees with gorgeous pen and ink illustrations. Working together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Lowman and H矇rem have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two--and a true gift for anyone who has ever looked up at a tree in wonder.

Environmental Awareness and Governance

2025/08/08 出版

Environmental Awareness and Governance: Ecolinguistic and Discourse Perspectives is a comprehensive exploration that delves into the intricate relationship between language, discourse, and environmental issues. This book begins by examining the role of environmental governance in Moroccan political parties' electoral programs, followed by an analysis of how Moroccan online media communicates water stress as a risk issue. It also provides an ecolinguistic analysis of a computer-animated Netflix film, "The Sea Beast", and discusses the impact of climate change on Moroccan agriculture, particularly focusing on the "Generation Green" strategy. The editors and contributors explore the role of translation in the environmental movement and discusses the shift from the Anthropocene to the Capitalocene in the context of global climate change. They also provide a critical discourse analysis of the environmental discourse of the COP27, highlighting the North-South divide. The latter part of this book focuses on environmental literacy and awareness among students and also examines the environmental awareness of Moroccan university students and its impact on their environmental practices. The book further discusses the role of visual language in environmental representation, using Moroccan cinema as a case study. It explores the intersection of language, translation, and posthumanism, focusing on cross-species interaction in Margaret Atwood's trilogy. This book concludes with an ecocritical interpretation of solastalgia in Mohsin Hamid's "Exit West" and a generic, ecocritical reading of climate change in Kim Stanley Robinson's Science in the Capital Trilogy. Each chapter provides a unique perspective on environmental issues, making it a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in environmental studies.

Mountainscapes

Berghahn Books 出版
2025/08/08 出版

Often home to rural, indigenous communities, mountain regions are rapidly becoming preserves for the social elite, and altogether unsustainable within the climate crisis. Bringing together scholars from geography, sociology, anthropology, history, and urban studies, Mountainscapes seeks to re-examine the dynamics of mountain mobilities and better understand how tourism, migration, and pastoralism share mountain communities. Ranging from the Swiss Alps to the Chilean Andes, this volume illuminates how the processes of place-making and non-belonging specifically manifest and evolve within our ever-changing mountain regions.

Here Comes the Sun

W. W. Norton 出版
2025/08/08 出版

Our climate, and our democracy, are melting down. But Bill McKibben, one of the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis, insists the moment is also full of possibility. Energy from the sun and wind is suddenly the cheapest power on the planet and growing faster than any energy source in history--if we can keep accelerating the pace, we have a chance. Here Comes the Sun tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind--and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. From the everyday citizens who installed solar panels equal to a third of Pakistan's electric grid in a year to the world's sixth-largest economy--California--nearly halving its use of natural gas in the last two years, Bill McKibben traces the arrival of plentiful, inexpensive solar energy. And he shows how solar power is more than just a path out of the climate crisis: it is a chance to reorder the world on saner and more humane grounds. You can't hoard solar energy or hold it in reserves--it's available to all. There's no guarantee we can make this change in time, but there is a hope--in McKibben's eyes, our best hope for a new civilization: one that looks up to the sun, every day, as the star that fuels our world.

Urban Regeneration

Mdpi AG 出版
2025/08/06 出版

Many aspects come into play when addressing urban regeneration issues, and various interventions are needed to ensure cities are resilient and prepared to respond to environmental, economic, and social challenges. Resilience is understood as a "cross-cutting condition" in the reorganisation of a city, as the ability to provide adaptive and timely responses to numerous challenges and adverse events. Land consumption, characterised by the expansion of artificial cover for residential, manufacturing, and infrastructure purposes, is a worrying trend globally. There is a need to monitor and formulate strategies to mitigate land consumption and safeguard ecosystem services. Only through joint actions will cities be prepared to address key land vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change: drought and water scarcity, heat waves in urban areas, unconventional events, and hydrogeological risk. This Special Issue aims to identify contextual actions that can reduce land consumption, promote de-impermeabilization, and encourage re-naturalisation, focusing on enhancing ecosystem services in land use activities. Therefore, it focuses on understanding the contributions of ecosystem services, landscape restoration and green infrastructure for climate mitigation, and land use reduction in urban regeneration processes.

Science in Resistance

2025/08/06 出版

Scientists around the world rise up for climate and ecological justice In April 2022, hundreds of scientists rose in civil disobedience, breaking the law in more than twenty-eight countries. Risking arrest, they glued their hands to roads, blocked government and corporate buildings, and chained themselves to the White House fence. In Science in Resistance, Fernando Racimo provides a first-person account of the Scientist Rebellion, a growing international movement of researchers stepping beyond conventional roles to alert the public about the need for action in the climate emergency. Combining personal stories, interviews with frontline activists, and insights from research on direct action and academia, he explores the challenges scientists face when taking a stand for climate and social justice. Reflecting on his role as a scientist-activist, Racimo describes how he came to be involved in the movement. He also explores the many ways in which academic institutions today are complicit in climate breakdown--whether by accepting funding from and collaborating with the very industries driving it, or by discouraging scientists from speaking up. Drawing on lessons from political science, psychology, ecology, sociology, and the history of science, he explains how academia can be transformed to become an actor for good in the emergency.

Biological Pest Control in Agroecosystems

Mdpi AG 出版
2025/08/04 出版

This reprint addresses the impact of insect pests on agricultural crops and highlights biological control as an alternative to the use of insecticides. Insect pests cause damage to the production and quality of agricultural products, in addition to environmental and human health problems due to the intensive use of pesticides. However, there are natural enemies of these pests-such as predators, parasites and pathogens-that contribute to controlling insect populations, maintaining ecological balance in agroecosystems. This edition features 10 scientific articles that address topics related to the use of natural enemies, their behavior in relation to pests in agroecosystems, as well as their characteristics and effectiveness.

Groundwater Pollution Control and Groundwater Management

Yunhui,Zhang  著
Mdpi AG 出版
2025/08/04 出版

Groundwater, a hidden reservoir beneath the Earth's surface, is a vital lifeline for billions around the world, supporting drinking water supplies and industrial and agricultural production. As a core component of the hydrological cycle, it interacts dynamically with ecosystems, soil, and surface water. The increasing demand for freshwater as a result of population growth and climate change has intensified the need to address groundwater vulnerability. Sources of pollution such as agricultural runoff, industrial wastewater, untreated wastewater, and chemical infiltration threaten water quality by introducing heavy metals, nutrients, and pathogens, endangering human health and ecological balance. These risks have a disproportionate influence on marginalized communities, exacerbating socio-economic disparities. Anthropogenic pressures like urbanization and over-extraction further hinder the sustainability of groundwater and therefore necessitate a comprehensive management framework. Mitigation methods require the adoption of practices to reduce pollution in agriculture and industry and the promotion of public participation in management. Interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and communities is essential to advance remediation strategies and sustainable governance. This Reprint combines case studies, on-site data, and successful intervention measures to elucidate contamination pathways, evaluate management efficacy, and chart conservation roadmaps. Protecting the integrity of groundwater is crucial for granting fair access to resources and combating escalating challenges to the climate and human life.

Climate Shocks and Pastoralist Migration in South Sudan

Zed Books 出版
2025/07/31 出版

In this important, multidisciplinary, open access study, Daniel Akech Thiong shows that the relations between climate disaster, pastoralist migration, and intercommunal conflict in Africa reach farther, both in time and space, than we realize. Focusing on the climate-shock-induced migrations of the Dinka people of South Sudan's Jonglei state into the Equatoria region, Thiong investigates the long-term ecological roots of conflicts among pastoralists, or between pastoralists and agriculturalists, over access shrinking waterholes and grazing zones. In so doing, he not only offers important correctives to prevalent, short-term narratives around individual political conflicts-narratives that provide little fodder for any long-term solutions--but also sheds new light on the role of governance, both national and local, in creating or mitigating the conflicts. Thiong in fact reveals examples of unusual cooperation between diverse ethnic groups amidst climate-change-induced disasters, and these findings shed new light on similar developments elsewhere in Africa, all of which offers new lessons for those who wish to mitigate future clashes related to climate-shock-induced displacement and encourage social stability. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Bloomsbury Open Collections Library Collective.
