The Energy System in the Island of Crete, Greece
The island of Crete, the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, stands at a crucial juncture in its energy evolution. Traditionally reliant on imported fossil fuels and isolated from the mainland power grid, Crete exemplifies the challenges-and the unique opportunities-faced by insular energy systems in the Mediterranean and beyond. With its abundant natural resources, particularly solar and wind energy, and growing awareness of environmental imperatives, Crete is poised to become a model for sustainable, decentralized energy development. This book, The Energy System in the Island of Crete, Greece: Towards a Sustainable Energy Future, seeks to explore and document the transformation of Crete's energy landscape. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the island's energy system, assesses the integration of renewable energy sources, and investigates the socio-economic, technological, and policy frameworks guiding this transition. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the book aims to inform researchers, policymakers, engineers, and other stakeholders about the practical pathways and systemic changes required to achieve energy sustainability on the island. In writing this book, I have attempted to strike a balance between technical detail and accessible narrative. I delve into the physical and infrastructural characteristics of Crete's energy system-its generation capacities, grid limitations, storage needs, and interconnection prospects-while also examining the policy instruments, regulatory frameworks, and local initiatives shaping its evolution. I also present case studies that highlight both successes and setbacks, offering critical insights into what works, what doesn't, and why. Ultimately, this book is an invitation-to researchers to deepen their engagement with insular energy systems; to policymakers to design context-sensitive, forward-thinking strategies; and to citizens to participate in shaping a greener, more secure energy future. Crete's journey is far from over, but its direction is clear: a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable energy system is not only possible but increasingly within reach.
When Worlds Quake
How earthquakes can reveal the subsurface secrets of our planet and other worlds When Worlds Quake is a fascinating account of how scientists around the globe seek to use quakes to answer tantalizing questions about the structure and inner dynamics of our planet and to discover the deepest secrets of our nearest neighbors in the solar system. Briefly traversing the history of seismology, Hrvoje Tkalčic describes the women and men who sought to understand major seismic events--from the catastrophic 1556 Shaanxi earthquake and the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 to more recent events such as the 2020 earthquakes in Tkalčic's native Croatia--and thus shaped the field. Modern global seismologists now not only study the behavior of earthquakes but also use seismic waves as tools to image Earth's deep interior. To do this work, they need seismographs positioned around the globe, including in remote, challenging regions. Tkalčic takes the reader along on his own daring expeditions to install seismographs and collect seismic wave data from the wilds of the Australian Outback to the rough depths of the Southern Ocean, and even farther afield--to the Moon and Mars, where quakes can be used to image the interiors of these worlds. A riveting and often personal narrative about the cutting-edge science of global and planetary seismology, When Worlds Quake reveals how quakes can help scientists to understand the mysterious inner architecture and ongoing evolution of our planet, as well as worlds beyond our own.

Grounded
Align with the cycles of nature by reconnecting with the divine feminine and exploring the inner and outer work necessary to save our planet, beginning with the soul of our soil. The environment is in trouble--and we're seeing direct effects on human health. Only when we restore our natural connection with the earth can we help to heal it and ourselves. This is the premise of Grounded, a clarion call and revolutionary guide from author Dr. Erin Yu-Juin McMorrow. Based on current trends, it's estimated that over 90% of the earth's soil could become degraded by 2050, affecting food production, flooding, and clean water supplies. This isn't a doomsday prophecy--it is our realistic future if we don't take action now. In this revised and updated edition, McMorrow provides tools and practices to transform ourselves, our socioeconomic systems, and the environment. McMorrow guides us through: - How everything from biodiversity loss to ocean acidification has roots in the killing of the microscopic life in our soil- The interconnection of the destruction of our earth and the feminine- How our natural cycles parallel the sacred cycles of nature- Practices, personal reflections, and meditations to help you start making a difference right now and remember that you are of the earth It's time to ground ourselves, returning to a cyclical, regenerative style of living, eating, loving, and dying. "Being grounded involves rooting within ourselves to expand in the world," explains McMorrow. "It means navigating from a place of power, clarity, creativity, and balance." Explore the ecological and spiritual basis of our existing climate crises--including what's happening with our soil and carbon cycles--to understand how we've gotten into our current state. Grounded gives us the wisdom and guidance to do the sacred work of reconnecting with the divine feminine and initiating transformation to address our carbon legacy and save our planet and ourselves.

Geological Environment Monitoring and Early Warning Systems
Geological environment monitoring and providing early warnings for disasters are key issues of global concern. Soil erosion is one of the most important causes of geological disasters. Soil erosion causes the soil to be unable to absorb rainwater effectively, increasing the vulnerability of the surface and exacerbating surface runoff, which provides a prerequisite for the occurrence of geological disasters such as landslides and debris flows. Soil erosion occurs naturally in all climates and on all continents. Human activities are one of the main causes of soil erosion. With the growth of the global population and economic development, the intensity of human exploitation and utilization of land resources has increased, changing the natural state of the land and destroying the soil structure, thereby increasing the risk of soil erosion and posing a serious threat to global water resources, the environment, and even food security. To explore the risk of soil erosion, numerical simulations combined with hydrological models play a key role in studying the relationship between soil erosion and human activities. By simulating and analyzing hydrological processes (such as rainfall, runoff, and evaporation) within watersheds, the impact of human activities on soil erosion can be quantitatively assessed, guiding appropriate land planning and agricultural production layout. By simulating hydrological processes, important hydrological information support can be provided to ensure early warnings for geological environment disasters, thereby reducing their negative impact on the global environment and human society.
