Historical Landscape Evolution
Several natural processes determine the landscape and its evolution, over relatively short or relatively long periods of time. On the scale of human life, the evolution induced by common erosive-depositional processes or by transgressive-regressive phases can be considered slow compared with catastrophic events (volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis or large mass movements). However, both can produce significant effects on human communities, which then respond, by adapting or migrating, to the natural modifications of the local landscape. Since protohistoric times, however, the increase in planned uses of the environment has resulted in human communities increasingly becoming the protagonists of landscape change. To a greater extent, in the historical period, the landscape has changed; these changes, more or less continuously, have been due to the overlapping of natural and man-induced processes. While, on the one hand, humankind has been and continues to be prone to natural landscape changes, on the other hand, in an attempt to mitigate the risks, they have become an actor in the creation of a new landscape more suitable for their needs. The purpose of this Special Issue (Historical Landscape Evolution) is to highlight the variations of the landscapes produced, in different locations and in defined time intervals and historical contexts, by environment-human interactions, evaluating, where possible, their relative weight and positive and negative effects on both human communities and the natural environment.

Hydroclimate in a Changing World
Global warming is imposing tremendous challenges upon human and otherwise biotic life on Earth. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture. The consensus is that the moisture transport by the atmospheric circulation strengthens and makes already wet areas of moisture convergence wetter and already dry areas of moisture divergence drier. Therefore, the tropics and mid-to-high latitudes will get wetter and the subtropics will get drier. Without any change in the interannual variability of hydroclimate, the change in the mean hydroclimate would equally increase drought risk in some places and flood risk in others. Moreover, global warming will cause the interannual variability of the hydroclimate to intensify, which will induce more droughts and floods. Furthermore, the changing atmospheric circulation interaction with the land surface may cause storm track alterations and may play an important role in shaping moisture redistribution. The author's contributions have documented the precipitation trends in southeast of the US, the Nile River Basin Ethiopia, Iraq, the Huai River Basin of northern China, and the Qilian Mountains of western China. The precipitation predictability on both global and regional scales are also studied. The interaction among climate systems in southeast Asia is also explicitly documented.

Toxic Tenacity
During the first few months of the community's efforts, I viewed it as merely a public relations battle. I concentrated on becoming good at TV interviews. We seemed to get better as we progressed in the battle with the toxic dump site. But things changed after I went on a road trip home one afternoon from work! The events changed my view of the battle!As I bounced along the country road, listening to country music, I noticed a large pick-up speeding up behind me. It started to pass but pulled in and pushed me off the road. I almost hit both a fence post and a power poll, but I managed to miss both! My anger turned to rage, and I pulled onto the road and chased the idiot at a fast speed, but finally, my rage subsided, and I stopped the chase. Later, I recognized the man at a meeting, and he was a dump employee!So, this event years later came to mind when I got an afternoon call from a raspy voice wanting to meet me at 9:00 at night on the road up to the dump site. He said he had some important documents to give me that he wanted me to send to the EPA. He said they would be a game-changer! So, was it an attempt to kill me? I was hesitant but agreed to the meeting. We met each other halfway up the road to the entrance. Later, my secretary mailed them to the San Francisco EPA, and within a week, a six-million-dollar fine was issued against the site for excessive waste storage.These were just the beginnings of the battle to close the site, and eventually, tenacity prevailed!KENNETH MCCALIP holds degrees in history, geography, and Law from various California universities but was plagued with arthritis in his hands and thus never practiced Law. But his law background did prepare him for the upcoming events at the small, poor community school in the backwoods of Santa Barbara County, California. It was a perfect location to achieve his goal of helping poor people, but he was unprepared for the upcoming barrage of trials and tribulations. Little did he know, as Principal-Superintendent, he would be up against the vested monetary interests of Southern California combined with poor toxic waste supervision by both state and local regulators. But with tenacity, as his guiding star, he stuck with it to the hard-won end and the closure of the toxic waste dump site that was only one mile from his schoolyard!
Native Gold as a Specific Indicator Mineral for Gold Deposits
This Special Issue reprint includes one review and fifteen research articles. The review by Palyanova et al. (2023) summarized the available information on the palladian gold and proposed classifying the types of deposits based on the fineness, content, and set of impurities in palladian gold and minerals intergrown with it. Fifteen articles focused on the typomorphic features of native gold from gold deposits in Russia, India, Chile, Scotland, and Canada. This Special Issue aims to identify and generalize the reasons for variations in the compositions of native gold. I hope all the articles in this Special Issue will be helpful and valuable resources for anyone who is interested in native gold and gold deposits. Saving a Rainforest and Losing the World

Based on six years of research on agrarian frontiers in Indonesia, Brazil, and Bolivia, this book traces where and how land sparing becomes policy and charts the social and ecological effects of these political contests. Gregory M. Thaler explains why land sparing appears successful in some places but not in others and reveals that success as an illusion achieved by displacing deforestation to new frontiers. Chinese Investment in Africa
