Assessments and Conservation of Biological Diversity from Coral Reefs to the Deep Sea
Assessments and Conservation of Biological Diversity from Coral Reefs to the Deep Sea: Uncovering Buried Treasures and the Value of the Benthos examines marine benthic habitats around the world that are linked by their physical location at the bottom of the oceans. The book approaches deep sea marine biodiversity with perspectives on genetics, microbiology and evolution, weaving a narrative of vital expert linkages with the goal of protecting something that most people cannot view or experience. Heterogeneity becomes operative across one of the largest continuous habitats of the planet. The book provides a full assessment of biological diversity within various benthic habitats, from coral reefs to plankton and fish species, and offers global case studies. It is the ideal resource for marine conservationists and biologists aiming to expand their knowledge and efforts to the rarely seen, yet equally important, realms of the ocean and respective benthic species. As deep-sea ecosystems and their species face unprecedented threats of disruption and extinction due to factors including disease, disinformation, pollution and climate change, this book provides current, sweeping knowledge of this undersea world along with remedies for its conservation.
Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping (Color Print)
"Conservation landscaping" refers to landscaping with specific goals of reducing pollution and improving the local environment. In the Chesapeake Bay watershed (the land that drains to the Bay and its many tributaries), this style of landscaping is sometimes called "BayScaping," or beneficial landscaping.Conservation landscaping provides habitat for local and migratory animals, conserves native plants and improves water quality. Landowners also benefit as this type of landscaping reduces the time and expense of mowing, watering, fertilizing and treating lawn and garden areas, and offers greater visual interest than lawn. Beneficial landscaping can also be used to address areas with problems such as erosion, poor soils, steep slopes, or poor drainage. One of the simplest ways to begin is by replacing lawn areas with locally native trees, shrubs and perennial plants. The structure, leaves, flowers, seeds, berries and other fruits of these plants provide food and shelter for a variety of birds and other wildlife. The roots of these larger plants are also deeper than that of typical lawn grass, and so they are better at holding soil and capturing rainwater.
Stoves and Trees
Originally published in 1984, Stoves and Trees asks whether better stoves really help the two billion people in the developing world who rely on wood and charcoal for cooking and heating their homes. It also asks if improved stoves actually save fuel and if they can help slow down tropical deforestation.
Advancing Complexity Research in Earth Sciences and Geography
In order to solve richer and more diverse problems in environmental and Earth sciences and other fields that have a direct impact on human society and human life, it has become a global trend to synergistically utilize methodological innovations in all relevant fields, including statistical science, systems science, complexity science, and artificial intelligence, to tackle the problems. This Reprint, a collection of papers published in a Special Issue of Applied Sciences, demonstrates the feasibility of such a rationale. This Special Issue is hoped to instigate further activities along this line.
Loving the North Woods
Loving the North Woods is a chronicle of the difficult challenges that led to tremendous conservation achievements in the great North Woods of Maine. Focusing on the remarkable period of activity from 1990 to 2015, during which historic achievements in American conservation unfolded, it explores how people love a place and how they bring that love into action. The stories of conservation in Maine's North Woods, hidden in files of land trusts, state government archives, forest landowners' records, and in the memories of those who participated, can inspire and guide us now and far into the future.
Social Transformation for Climate Change
This book argues that social transformation is both necessary and possible if democracies are to respond effectively to the climate crisis without social collapse.
Climate Policy Integration
This book analyzes climate policy integration processes by investigating cause-effect relations in cases of integrating climate policy in energy and land-use sectors of Indonesia and Mexico, taking a novel comparative case study approach. The book identifies root causes for integration outside of the public administration, discussing decisive factors in the political economy of the energy and land-use sectors. Showing how policy windows may open for the successful integration of climate policies nevertheless, the book addresses the need to identify and properly use these windows to establish the administrative and institutional arrangements for effective climate policy implementation. This book offers two-fold insights for overcoming the challenges posed by climate policy integration: Firstly, it contributes to theory-building by amending theories of the policy process and by taking a wider perspective on the role of integration in the context of transformational change processes in emerging economies. Secondly, it sets forth a set of research-based practical policy recommendations on how to foster climate policy integration in the political decision-making processes as well as the public administration structures. Therefore, this book will appeal to scholars and researchers of public policy, public administration, political science, and environmental sciences, as well as policy-makers and practitioners interested in a better understanding of climate policy integration in energy and land-use sectors.
The Natural Environment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
The book presents the first comprehensive description of parts of the Mid-Atlantic ridge subject to a contract for polymetallic sulphide exploration between the International Seabed Authority and the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Poland. The state-of-the-art of the study area presented here takes into account a variety of aspects, including hydrological and meteorological conditions, hydrography, optical properties of water, seafloor morphology, geology, sediments and sedimentation processes, pelagic environment and its biocoenosis, benthic organisms, seabed communities, deep-sea environmental protection, as well as many other. Also, the research methods and tools are enumerated, and the studies advised for the future are outlined. The Atlantic seabed area described in this monograph is situated near the central part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), one of the major geological formations on Earth, featuring - like other mid-oceanic ridges - active and inactive hydrothermal vent fields with their unusual and unique ecosystems. The commercial interest in MAR exploration is due to the deposits of massive polymetallic sulphides, formed as a result of hydrothermal fluid precipitation.

Geological Observations on South America
"Geological Observations on South America," written by Charles Darwin, presents a comprehensive exploration of the geological features, formations, and natural history of the South American continent. Readers are compelled to continue reading to find out what happens next since the title character is so indulgent. The book is a compilation of Darwin's detailed observations and insights gathered during his famous voyage aboard the HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836. In the book, Darwin meticulously documents the geological formations, fossils, and landscapes he encountered across South America, offering a fascinating account of the continent's geological history. He introduces readers to the concept of gradual geological change, challenging prevailing notions of cataclysmic events shaping the Earth's surface. One of the prominent features of the book is Darwin's description of the Andes mountain range and his analysis of the forces that led to its uplift. He theorized that the mountains were formed through a slow process of elevation, contradicting earlier beliefs in instantaneous upheavals. Additionally, he explored the origins of coral reefs, volcanic activity, and the effects of erosion on the landscape.

Trial of an Iconic Species
The mighty Fraser River sockeye populations are in trouble. In the early 1990s, millions of fish started to disappear, and fisheries scientists and managers were stumped as to why. Was it because of climate change? Poaching on the high seas? A fluke of nature? In a desperate effort to solve the mystery - or at least appease the public - the Canadian Government commissioned an inquiry, which later became known as the Cohen Commission or Cohen Inquiry, and put the decline of the Fraser River sockeye on trial. Dozens of lawyers representing multiple stakeholders appeared at the Inquiry to present their theories, their views, and the results of numerous scientific studies. The Inquiry was recorded on camera by an independent filmmaker - perhaps a first in the history of Canadian federal inquiries. That filmmaker was often the only outside witness during the Inquiry's most riveting and revealing testimony. This book peels back the testimony of scientists and bureaucrats who revealed previously undisclosed information, much of it shocking - and all of it enlightening. The Inquiry was criticized for not finding the smoking gun. But the terms of reference set by the Government insisted that no blame should fall on anyone. This requirement itself suggests that politics may play a larger role than anything else in the demise of the iconic Fraser River sockeye.

Copout
Why, after thirty years of international climate negotiations to reduce carbon emissions, has the UN process failed to deliver a survivable outcome? Nick Breeze goes behind the scenes at the UN COPs, from Paris to Dubai, to find out what on Earth is going on.Most people tend to turn away, perhaps understandably, from the key existential issue of the day: climate change or, some would say more accurately, climate collapse.Nick Breeze tells the engaging, very human story of successive COP conferences over the past decade: it is a tale of imperfection, failure even, but not yet defeat. So far, the UN process has achieved almost the exact opposite of what it first set out to achieve at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.Nick shows clearly that it is not Extinction Rebellion, Just Stop Oil nor any other climate protesters who are the extremists; the true extremists are the policymakers who consistently undermine faltering efforts to reduce emissions. Repeatedly claiming to be saving us whilst allowing carbon emissions to continue rising, governments have failed their people on climate.Nick shows us how, why and what we can do about it. The public remains largely uninformed about climate change and, for the most part, those who seek to draw attention to the issue are seen as 'crazy'. There remains a terrifying gap between scientific reality and political action.Packed with his own experiences and insights from expert interviewees, this page-turning account is less about the intricacies of the science and more about the mainstream perception of how we are understanding and responding to the problem.
Assessing Sustainability over Space and Time
Sustainability is a critical global challenge that requires comprehensive assessments of environmental, social, and economic indicators. The formulation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represents a significant leap forward in humanity's pursuit of sustainability. The SDGs now serve as a shared platform for global development, guiding current actions towards and shaping visions of a sustainable future. Monitoring progress towards the SDGs and sustainability in general is essential. This is true not only at the global and national scales, but also at the subnational and landscape levels. Geographic information science (GIScience) and remote sensing (RS) have made significant advances in these areas. These breakthroughs include the increasing availability of geospatial data, a development which plays a crucial role in this regard. This Special Issue aimed to bring together novel contributions on the assessment of sustainability and sustainability-related indicators over space and time using geospatial data, tools, and techniques (GIScience and RS). This publication contains 11 peer-reviewed papers, including two review articles and nine research articles.

Land-Atmosphere Interactions and Effects on the Climate of the Tibetan Plateau and Surrounding Regions II
As the world's highest and largest plateau, the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is referred to as 'the Asian Water Tower' and 'the Third Pole of the World'. A better understanding of the water and energy cycles in the TP is not only critical for revealing the mechanisms of regional land-atmosphere interactions, but also essential for assessing the causes of changes in the cryosphere and hydrosphere in relation to changes in the plateau atmosphere in the Asian monsoon system. Since the TP is an ecologically fragile region that is sensitive to climate change, the systematic evaluation of land-atmosphere interactions in this region also contributes to the quantitative understanding of climate change. This Special Issue mainly presents up-to-date advances in the quantitative assessment of sensible heat flux, soil moisture, soil freeze-thaw processes, vegetation and drought indices, groundwater storage, runoff, condensation, and desublimation, as well as the distinct surface processes over lakes and glaciers in the TP. These selected papers are novel and timely in informing the knowledge on land-atmosphere interactions driven by climate warming. We trust that the collection of these papers will provide quantitative references for more effective assessment and prediction of land-atmosphere interactions in the "Third Pole".

Soil Degradation, Soil Pollution and Ecological Restoration
Soil degradation is a complex phenomenon that can result in a diminished capacity of the ecosystem to provide goods and services for its beneficiaries. Degraded soils have a health status such that they do not provide the normal goods and services of the particular soil in its ecosystem. Ecological rehabilitation is required when the soil is degraded to such an extent that the land becomes unproductive. Soil degradation can be caused by various factors, including physical aspects such as soil sealing and crusting, soil erosion, and soil compaction, which may result in severe landscape deterioration. Soil nutrient imbalance or depletion is also a widespread cause of soil degradation due to inappropriate practices in agricultural areas. Acidification, alkalization, and salinization are also serious problems of soil degradation. In addition to physical and chemical soil degradation, the biological health of the soil can be damaged as well. In recent decades, toxic contamination of soil, for instance, heavy metal pollution, organic pollutant contamination, etc., has brought more pressing issues. Therefore, effective and up-to-date technology for soil degradation and soil pollution restoration is urgently needed. The goal of this Special Issue was to establish a platform for researchers to communicate research results or the latest insights in related fields.
Chromatographic Analysis of Pesticide in Environmental and Food
Pesticides persist as a prevailing tool in global agriculture for the management of pest populations and to increase crop yields. Their extensive application may lead to the dispersion of pesticide compounds into the environment, subsequently resulting in their persistence as residues within food products. Consequently, there exists the potential for adverse consequences for non-target organisms and human well-being.In response to this concern, diverse legal frameworks and surveillance programs have been instituted on an international scale, with the overarching objective of regulating pesticide usage by setting forth maximum admissible levels for pesticide residues. Consequently, there arises a pressing need to develop highly selective and sensitive multi-residue analytical methodologies, tailored to the quantification of these residues within complex matrices. This Special Issue is devoted to the analysis of pesticide residues within both environmental and food matrices via chromatographic techniques, including the development and validation of analytical methods, along with the completion of comprehensive monitoring studies.

As human activities have spread, taking up more of the earth's surface, we have unintentionally disrupted the water cycle with consequences on our planet's ecosystem. We can reverse this, particularly through regenerative agriculture. There is a lot of talk about the role of carbon in climate change, but the importance of water is less well known. Intervention at the level of the water cycle could be the fastest way to have an impact and ensure our food security on the planet.
Land and Climate
This book is an illustrated introduction to the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land, published in 2019, which addresses the issues of desertification, land degradation and food security as well as policy responses to the risks of the climate-land-human system. The author illustrates the main findings of the report with concrete examples from peer-reviewed studies and publications of international authorities. The aim is to help you understand the issues surrounding land management and climate change. This will enable you to form your own opinion on how serious the situation is and how it is likely to evolve depending on your attitudes and actions.
